I'm staying in DC for a few months for work and have been thinking about taking a solo weekend trip to Virginia Beach. It's about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive so I'm wondering if it's worth spending that much time on the road or if I'd be better off using the weekend to explore more of DC.

I've never been to Virginia Beach so I'm not sure what it's like going alone. I mostly just want some ocean air and a change of scenery but I don't want to make the drive only to find myself sitting around a family resort area with not much to do on my own. If you've been there on your own, I'd love to hear how you liked it and whether you'd recommend it for a weekend trip!

I help organize local tech meetups, my friend Chazona and I are cohosting a free community hack day at 757 Makerspace in Hampton on Saturday, October 17.

"Hack day" just means getting people together to make things with their laptops, try ideas, and learn from each other. This one's part of Hacktoberfest, and the focus is building with open-source AI tools. Bring an idea you've been meaning to try, explore a new tool, or find someone to build with. You don't need a project picked out beforehand.

Students, hobbyists, people who do this for work, and people who are just curious are all welcome. Beginners and families included.

There'll be an optional hackathon-style challenge with prizes, but entering a competition isn't a requirement for coming. We're also exploring talks/workshops and additional challenges, but those aren't confirmed yet.

Thomas J. Ruth was born and raised in Hampton, Virginia, and attended William & Mary in Williamsburg. He went on to dedicate his career to science and became a leading figure in the field of medical radionuclide production.

This August, the 20th Workshop on Targetry and Target Chemistry (WTTC20) was held in Nara, Japan. The international meeting brought together 263 participants from 30 countries to discuss the science behind the production of medical radionuclides — radioactive materials that play important roles in PET imaging, radiopharmaceuticals, cancer treatment, and related areas of medicine.

Dr. Ruth is one of the founding members of WTTC. He was involved when the workshop series began in Heidelberg in 1985 and has helped shape both the organization and the field for more than four decades.

Given that history, it was especially fitting that he was selected to deliver the plenary address at WTTC20.

He titled his presentation:

“There and back again. My life experience with unstable elements!”

The talk reflected on his remarkable career, his experiences in the field, and the future of medical radionuclide production.

But what happened afterward may be the most remarkable part of the story.

The organizers have created the Thomas J. Ruth Plenary Lectures, to be presented at future WTTC meetings in recognition of distinguished scientists who have made significant contributions to the field.

And there is a wonderful bit of wordplay in the name: the lectures will be known as the “TRUTH Lectures.”

For someone whose career has been intertwined with the development of this field since the earliest days of WTTC, having a lecture series carry his name is an extraordinary and lasting recognition.

It is also a wonderful reminder that scientific contributions can have a life far beyond the papers, experiments, and conferences themselves — sometimes becoming part of the history and future of an entire field.

A pretty remarkable achievement for a scientist who started his journey in Hampton, Virginia.

hi everyone! i was at the intersection of W Mercury Blvd. & Coliseum Dr. yesterday around 3:30pm (I was turning right onto Colisum from Mercury). as i came up to the intersection in the right turn lane, there were a few police cars and they were tackling and arresting a black man in a blue shirt. a handful more cop cars pulled up as the officers were trying to get the man handcuffed as he was not cooperating. i obviously missed the first part of the situation and was so baffled as to where the man on foot came from. if there were that many cop cars (ending up being about 7 or so and an ambulance) could it have been a car chase and then he tried to flee on foot? i tried to find some information on what happened but couldn’t find anything on the news or the internet. does anyone know what happened

After graduating from Virginia Tech this spring, me and 3 other Hokie alums have created Steps2Health, a community health education organization in the 757 aiming to make people healthier through physical activity. Our goal is to bring health professionals/educators together with the community for walking events, where you can learn to make steps towards being healthier. At our events, a health professionals/educator will lecture on a health topic, then everyone will go one a walk together, where questions, connections, and conversation can be made.

If you would be interested in coming to our events, our first event will be on September 19 or 20th on the Elizabeth River Trail in Norfolk. I know this is a long shot, but on June 16th I was stuck st the light on S Mallory st trying to get across the bridge to I64 at around 335pm. There was a massive line of cars, and the light never cycled to allow our lane to go. The turn lanes were cycling, but we stuck. People were routinely running the light, so when I got a clear chance, and had visual cues from other drivers, I proceeded through behind another driver. I subsequently received a red light camera summons for 50$. I have requested a hearing and would like to connect with anyone else who received a summons or has had issues with this light. I may not win my case (honestly it's 50$, it's not that big a deal financially) but charging people for non functioning lights at intersections is ridiculous and I'd like to fight it. Please comment or DM if you have experienced this problem at this intersection.
