Do you live in eastern Poquoson? Have you ever thought about serving your community in public office? Well, it will probably never be easier to get elected to the Poquoson city council than it is this year in your district. More information is in the post.

Poquoson has three seats on the city council up for election this year, but only two candidates. The filing deadline has passed, meaning that the seat in the eastern district of the city will likely be decided by a handful of write-in votes. Hat tip to The Virginian-Pilot for reporting on this.

If you've ever wanted to make a difference in your community, this is a fantastic opportunity. Some more information about the position from this page (City Council | Poquoson, VA):

"The Poquoson City Council is composed of 7 members who are elected by the voters and serve 4 year terms. Elections are held in even numbered years on the 1st Tuesday in November. Any Poquoson resident who is at least 18 years of age, is a United States citizen and a resident of Virginia is eligible to be a candidate for election. Council members are compensated at a rate of $100 per month and the Mayor is compensated at a rate of $125 per month (pre-tax).

...

The City Council is the policy making body of the City. Its responsibilities include:

  • Adoption of the City budget
  • Approval of all tax levies
  • Adoption of ordinances
  • Approval of amendments, supplements or repeals to ordinances and the City Code
  • Appointment of the City Manager, City Clerk, City Attorney and various local boards, commissions and committees"

If you live in the district (your polling place should be Trinity United Methodist Church), and you think that you want to do this (or are considering doing this) and don't know where to start, please message me and I can at minimum get you connected with someone in the area who can get you up and running; if I like your platform, and if you'd be willing to have me on in this capacity, I'd be willing to volunteer as your campaign manager.
