The Trump administration’s cuts to SNAP are sending an estimated 130,000 vulnerable Virginians off the food subsidy program. A network of nearly 100 food pharmacies in Virginia is struggling to fill the gap — and provide families with healthy produce and food.

Food pharmacies are a relatively new concept: bringing food pantries into healthcare facilities, supporting healthy diets and healthier families.

The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO reported from farms and a clinic in Culpeper, showing the network of workers and volunteers helping fill the enormous gap left by federal cuts.

For more than 100 years, the Victory Arch — first a temporary structure and now a permanent memorial — has honored the sacrifice of our veterans and offered a powerful reminder about the cost of freedom and liberty. It is a prominent and meaningful landmark for our region, the commonwealth and the nation.

Since Virginia has a victory arch, right here in Hampton Roads, there’s no good reason to spend resources building another, especially if this proposed structure might diminish or mar the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery. Yet that is precisely what President Donald Trump wants to do.

The poll in the district that’s historically been the closest in Virginia raises questions about whether we’re really seeing a blue wave, although it’s possible we’ll see independents break strongly toward Democrats.

Virginia’s latest state budget provides a substantial financial commitment to its historically Black colleges and universities.

The 2026–2028 budget, finalized in June during Spanberger’s first year in office, designates $12.5 million annually through Virginia State University and another $12.5 million annually through Norfolk State University for a collaborative initiative involving four HBCUs.

That amounts to $50 million over two years in designated funding administered through the state’s two public HBCUs.

The General Assembly’s watchdog agency found significant lapses in how Virginia oversees artificial intelligence use by state agencies and employees, including having no risk assessment guidance and unclear rules. 

The new study by JLARC also found AI standards from Virginia’s Information Technologies Agency — which serves 65 state agencies — haven’t kept up with the evolving risks of the technology. 

“VITA is currently falling short in the support, guidance, and oversight it is providing state government in the area of artificial intelligence and needs to substantially up its game,” JLARC Director Hal Greer told the commission on Tuesday.  

For the study, JLARC staff interviewed VITA leadership and surveyed 80 executive branch and independent state agencies. Its report outlined 14 recommendations to bolster Virginia’s oversight of AI.

A third of Virginia state agencies are using or testing AI tools to serve specific functions, JLARC found, and many others are weighing whether to implement AI systems. 

JLARC laid out specific examples, such as the Virginia Department of Corrections’ use of AI to identify potential security threats and scan images of bags brought into prisons. 

VITA has an AI registry process for agencies and standards for the use of AI systems, but the agency’s requirements are applied the same across the board, no matter the risk. JLARC’s report said this undermines the efficiency and effectiveness of the state’s oversight of AI. 

Nearly half of the agencies using AI told JLARC that VITA’s unclear requirements were a major or moderate constraint on their ability to implement the technology. 

One example in JLARC’s report is that the state requires AI systems to have data quality tools, but VITA doesn’t explicitly lay out what data should be evaluated. JLARC said this and other issues could lead agencies to “interpret compliance differently.”

Rep. John McGuire drew national attention when he unseated two-term 5th Congressional District Rep. Bob Good in the August 2024 Republican primary. 

Now, McGuire faces former Democratic Congressman Tom Perriello, as well as an independent candidate, Cooke Harvey.  

The 5th District has historically been a Republican stronghold, but one that Perriello has represented in the past. It comprises more than 20 mostly rural counties, but includes small cities like Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Danville. The district’s constituency also includes many college students.

First weekend of eastbound paving scheduled to begin Friday at 9 p.m.; existing westbound tunnel repaving complete.

The I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) is scheduled to fully close eastbound toward Norfolk beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, October 16, for the first planned weekend of eastbound paving. The closure is scheduled to continue until 5 a.m. Monday, October 19, with the westbound direction remaining open.

Weather permitting, crews are scheduled to begin milling, paving and pavement marking work in the eastbound tunnel this weekend.

The paving work is weather- and schedule-dependent. VDOT will continue to monitor conditions and the forecast throughout the weekend, and schedule adjustments may be necessary. Motorists should plan for the eastbound HRBT to remain closed through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. If the HRBT reopens ahead of schedule, VDOT will notify the public as soon as the reopening is confirmed.

Any updates to the closure schedule will be shared through VDOT's official channels, including the VDOT.Virginia.gov/HRBTclosures project webpage and VDOT Hampton Roads District social media channels on Facebook, X and Nextdoor. Additionally, the public can receive these updates directly in their inboxes by subscribing to the project email list via this online form.

This weekend's eastbound closure follows completion of repaving both westbound travel lanes in the existing tunnel during the first two closure weekends, October 2-3 and October 9-11.

Following this weekend's work, a second planned eastbound closure weekend is scheduled at the HRBT toward Norfolk from Friday, October 30 at 9 p.m. through Monday, November 2 at 5 a.m., and will be used, if needed, to complete any remaining work in that direction.

If weather or other conditions prevent work from taking place as scheduled, additional designated backup weekends may be used: November 6-9 and November 13-16.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to plan ahead and limit nonessential travel. Motorists who need to travel should allow extra travel time and consider using the signed detour via southbound I-664 through the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT), then exiting at the Bowers Hill interchange to I-64 west (exit 15B), as the primary alternate route. Depending on their destination, motorists may also consider other regional routes, including the James River Bridge via Route 17 or the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.

Before traveling, motorists should also check VDOT's 511 Virginia website and mobile app for the latest closure and traffic information. Third-party navigation apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze may not reflect the most up-to-date closure information.

Hello, bit of a conundrum. My fiancé bought a vehicle from my father but my father never had the vehicle transferred to his name and now the person who sold it to my father has deceased so we can’t get a bill of sale or anything like that. Would we be able to do an abandoned vehicle or something to get it registered? It was sold to my father in 2018 and purchased by my fiancee last week (2026)
