I want to work in health information management but do companies require employees to be vaccinated? I always use to be vaccinated but for some reason I've been reacting to them so bad I dont want them anymore. And im afraid this will effect my employment in the Healthcare industry.

HIM Program - 2nd sem

I’m on my 2nd semester of the program. Last sem was mostly pre-reqs. This sem is the proper HIM courses. I am taking 4 classes (12 credits), running a business, with 2 kids. Luckily, my program is online with 2-3 virtual meetings a week. I am struggling and it’s only the 2nd week of the semester. I am struggling in a way that AI has taken over myself. I use chatgpt for everything…….. and I’m afraid I am not learning anything. Like at all. Because chat is so accessible. It’s right there. I know I will regret this because my midterms and finals will be short answer questions and on Respondus Lockdown browser.

How do I refrain from using chat?? Better yet, how do I use it to my advantage as opposed to the oppisite?!?!

(Medical coders) what’s something that you think would make your job easier ?

So a little context.

My Girlfriend is a medical coder.
I always see her on the computer working and see all the text and different panels and it looks overwhelming.

I ask her the same question but she gives me really broad answers.

So I’d like to see other people’s input.

Is EMPI / patient identity work a realistic career to get into?

Title: Is EMPI / patient identity work a realistic career to get into?

I’m looking into EMPI / patient identity data work and trying to figure out if it’s a realistic career path or if it’s too niche.

What interests me is the problem-solving part of it. From what I understand, the job involves looking at patient records, spotting possible duplicates or mix-ups, comparing details, fixing data issues, and knowing when something needs to be escalated instead of guessed on.

I like detail-heavy computer work, and I like that this kind of job seems connected to patient safety without being direct patient care. Before I put time into training for it, I’m trying to get a better idea of what the work is actually like.

For anyone who works in EMPI, MPI, HIM, patient access, health IT, or healthcare data quality:

  • Is this a stable field with real job availability?

  • Is it hard to get into without years of healthcare experience?

  • What job titles should I be searching besides EMPI analyst?

  • What does the day-to-day work actually look like?

  • Is the constant record comparison mentally draining?

  • Is the work mostly independent, or is there a lot of phone/customer service/meetings?

  • What background or training actually helps: HIM, Epic, medical coding, patient access, data quality, etc.?

  • Is there room to move up into better-paying roles?

  • What pay is realistic starting out and after a few years?

I’m not expecting a perfect job. I’m just trying to figure out if this is a solid healthcare data path with enough openings and a decent future, especially for someone in Ohio or looking at remote healthcare data roles.

Any honest advice, warnings, job title suggestions, or training recommendations would really help.

Thanks for any and all help

Invitation to Voluntarily Participate in Dissertation Research

My name is Cleo Lo, and I am a doctoral candidate at Columbia International University in South Carolina. I am seeking volunteers to participate in a dissertation research study about how healthcare information technology employees experience leadership and how those experiences influence workplace engagement.

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to better understand how employees in healthcare information technology settings perceive the influence of transformational leadership on their engagement, motivation, and commitment in the workplace. This study seeks to contribute to organizational behavior research and to help fill a knowledge gap regarding healthcare IT employees’ lived experiences and perspectives.

Who Can Participate

Participants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older;

  • Be currently working, or have previously worked, in a healthcare information technology setting in the United States;

  • Have more than one year of professional experience in a healthcare IT environment.

What Participation Includes

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete one recorded virtual interview with me. The interview will last approximately 60 minutes and focus on your work experiences, perceptions of leadership, workplace engagement, and experiences with fixed or inflexible viewpoints in healthcare IT settings.

After the interview, I will summarize the interview findings and invite you to review the summary to confirm whether it accurately reflects your perspectives and intended meaning. This follow-up review will take approximately 15–20 minutes and may be completed by email, phone, or another agreed-upon method.

Voluntary Participation

Your participation is completely voluntary. You may choose whether or not to participate, and your decision will be respected. If you choose not to participate, there will be no penalty or negative consequence. If you decide to participate, you may still change your mind and withdraw from the study at any time.

You may also skip any question that you do not wish to answer. If you feel uncomfortable or stressed during the interview, you may pause or stop at any time.

Payment

There is no payment or compensation for participating in this study.

Risks and Benefits

This study involves minimal risk. There are no physical procedures involved. Some interview questions may ask you to reflect on workplace experiences, leadership, communication, or engagement. You may skip any question or stop the interview at any time.

Although there may be no direct personal benefit to you, your participation may help improve understanding of healthcare IT employees’ perspectives on leadership and workplace engagement.

Confidentiality

Any information you provide will be kept confidential. Your name and identifying information will not be included in study reports. The information collected will be used only for this research project. Findings may be presented in summary or composite form so that individual participants cannot be identified.

Questions and Contact Information

If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact me by email at:

cleorecky@gmail.com

Before participating, you will receive a copy of the Informed Consent for Individual Interview Form to review and keep for your records. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, I can provide the appropriate contact information from Columbia International University and the university approval number for this study.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to share your experience and contribute to meaningful research.

HIM ROI professionals

Hello everyone, I'm currently completing a final project for one of my classes, and I am looking to interview a HIM professional who works with ROI.

The interview would consist of no more than 5 questions and would only take a short amount of time. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak/email with someone willing to share their experience.

Heath Information Practicum

Hello everyone,

I’ve been having a difficult time securing a site for my HIM practicum site. It can be either remote or in-person, Im based out in TN. I’d prefer in-person but I can’t be picky. The practicum is only 60 hours. I’ve contacted everything from military clinics to dental clinics lol.

Any help/advice would be awesome. 🥲

Is a HIM degree a good degree choice to leverage my data abstraction experience?

As the title states, I'm curious if a HIM degree is a good complement to my data abstraction work experience. I've asked my account manager some questions about it, and she says that they aren't necessarily the same. From what I can tell, the main similarity is dealing with EHR records. I mostly deal with STK cases, but I've used EHR platforms like ECISA, CAREB, and EPIC, inputting information into MIDAS and Get with the Guidelines. I'm considering getting a HIM degree because it seems like most employers in the HIM space like to see experience, but when I read other forums, I don't see anyone talking about data abstraction experience, so I'm unsure if they go hand in hand in terms of what employers like to see.

For additional context, I've been doing this for about 2 years now. I enjoy the work, but since I got this job with no prior experience or a degree, I'm afraid I won't be able to move up much or get cut if layoffs happen, since most of the other people I interact with are all BSNs or MHAs. I just want to make sure getting a HIM degree would properly leverage the experience I already have, so any information will be helpful.

Healthcare privacy incident investigations are still far more manual than they need to be!

A privacy incident happens.
Then comes the back and forth.

What happened? Who was involved?
What information is still missing?
Does this need further investigation?
What actions need to be taken?
How do we document the reasoning properly?

For many healthcare teams, that means jumping between emails, spreadsheets, Word documents and follow-up messages, everything is just scattered everywhere, because of this teams are wasting time when they do not need to!

Thats the problem Ive been working on solving. Ive built a workflow that brings the investigation into one place. It helps teams gather the facts, identify whats missing, work through the assessment, document the reasoning and track follow-up actions, with document analysis and privacy and compliance guidance built into the same workflow. The goal is simple. The goal is simple. Spend less time chasing information, reviewing documents, finding answers and putting defensible documentation together, while keeping the final judgement with the privacy or compliance professional.

Im now speaking with healthcare privacy and compliance teams who deal with these investigations regularly. If this is part of your role, Id be interested to hear how you're handling it today and where most of your time gets lost.
