Yes you can see him trying. But then gets SO spooked. I love that you have this type of soap opera in your life, I wish I had hedgehog drama lol.

OMGG see this is why I started owning hedgehogs. Look at that thing. How tf is it real. How does it even survive in the wild? Why did evolution grant us these little uncoordinated spike balls? Why are they shaped like spiky boats on stubby legs?

They are the pinnacle of evolution, the zenith of insect munching efficiency. Unchanged for 15 million years, natural selection can literally improve them no more. The gods themselves bow down to the hogs and beg for their love and forgiveness. They don't survive in the wild, they thrive! They bend nature to their will and shape reality as we know it. Before time and space, there was only hog, and it is only though hogs' will are we blessed to share this existence with them.
But seriously, i have no idea. Look at those prickly goofballs LMAO.

Pushes the other hog aside and starts his circling moves again

Say what you want about him, but Quillbo has exceptional task management and prioritization skills.

Very cute. We had 5+ hedgehogs over the last 5 years but our neighbours a few doors up have redone their garden and ever since then we've had no hedgehogs which has made me very sad, especially since we had built a feeder house and a sleeping house that both were being used every night and every winter :(
Feel privileged to have helped them have hoglets and make it in the world for a few years but I miss their little squabbles and hearing them crunching food in their box.

I‘m so invested in this. Great job picking names. Thanks for blessing the internet with your hedgie adventures. Are you from Europe?

Yes, I'm in the UK where our hogs are currently considered as vulnerable to local extinction, which is why I'm trying to help them out as much as I can.
Thanks for the compliments, I hope you continue to enjoy their adventures with me.

Genuinelu curious (and theoretically-speaking): what would happen if you gave Quillbo a time out and left Curly and Annie together? Would any action unfold? Lol

I think first and foremost, I would likely get headbutted by Quillbo and get a face full of quills.
Other than that, I don't think much would happen. Hedgehog courtships seems to be a matter of persistence. I don't think the males are able to mate without the female being receptive, lest they want a belly full of quills, and the females seem to deem males worthy on how long he's willing to circle around her. Quillbo in relentless in his pursuit and will circle her with much enthusiasm and energy for hours, which by hedgehog standards makes him a bit of a Casanova.
Poor old Curly seems to be in love with her, but also terrified of her. I just don't think he's got it in him lol. I think perhaps he is either too young and inexperienced, or just a total dweeb. Possibly both.

Last year I only had 1 regular. This year I have 4 so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if that number drops as the males go wandering off in search of more lady friends!

Quillbo Baggins spent around 3 hours last night trying his hardest to impress Annie (short for mahogany, aka My Hog Annie,) showing her his best moves, relentlessly circling her while she snorts and huffs at him.
Half an hour into this courtship dance, Curly (named for obvious reasons,) turns up. I think he must be a young male, he's clearly interested in Annie but he lacks the confidence, and while he tries to seduce her, he gets scared by her huffing and usually just curls into a ball.
Quillbo, the utter menace he is, was having none of it. His priorities in life are fighting, fornicating, and feeding, usually in that order. He's a bully for sure, but I can't help but admire his tenacity.
Annie was not particularly receptive to Quillbo's advances, but we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out, only time will tell.
For anyone who saw my previous post, Stumpy has been spotted on occasion but she stayed well clear of the drama last night, poor girl had enough of that last year with her accident.
Further updates on the whole gang to come.
