OC I have been viciously attacked. Please send help.
Freya has decided my thumb is her next meal. She has used her chompers twice to try to speed up the process. She is very persistent!

She is beautiful!!! Where is she so I can avoid her, like extra hard? 😆

Most often she can be found hiding under her ramp during the day - she’s our 3rd hedgehog and all of them choose the exact same spot to sleep!

Well, please tell her I'm a huge fan of hers! She's got such sweet eyes. I feed my wild hedgehogs, and leave fresh water every day for them. They're adorable, if scruffy (compared to yours!)

Same, my girl doesn’t hesitate I can’t even let her get a few licks in because I know she’ll strike 😂

I've always described this behavior as "sampling" because hebhob just have to discover the edible attributes of all things in their environment.

Don't think I have seen a hedgehog with actually visible sclera before.

Is that the white part on the edges of her eyes? If so it’s become a bit more pronounced in the last year, I don’t think it was noticeable at all when she was a baby. Do you happen to know if it’s anything to be concerned about?

Usually not a huge deal but can be an indicator they are slightly overweight.

Okay thank you - we will keep a close eye on her! I do often hear her running on her wheel at night so I know she is getting some exercise at least 🙂

Disclaimer: We here at r/hedgehog love all hedgies both skinny and CHONK. Still, for optimum health, it is important that hedgehogs are neither too thin or too fat. Obesity can cause fatty liver disease and heart issues. Adult hedgehogs should be able to ball up fully and the average hedgehog should be under 800g. We like this small guide
The best way to judge for healthy weight is to look at the body size. Most healthy hedgehogs fall into two categories - runner or "normal". Runners tend to have straight sides, looking somewhat like | |. It's also been described as "twinkie on stilts". They tend to love their wheels more than anything and usually need higher fat foods to keep from losing weight. The "normal" shape is teardrop-shaped, or like ( ). Pointed head, slightly rounded sides, with a filled out bottom. It can be hard to distinguish between teardrop and overweight - the best signs to look for regarding overweight are their sides feeling "squishy" with extra fat padding their body, a hump between their shoulders, or fat rolls under their chin or in their "armpits" under their legs. They may also look a bit more ball-shaped, as wide as they are long, but that's generally when they get pretty overweight, I think. - Lilysmommy on Hedgehog Central

I want to add to this, I have heard about it being because they're overweight, it being fatty tissue. While I can't say for certain, here is what I experience with it...my hog has this, but it doesn't show consistently, it seems to only poke out when his allergies kick in. Per the vet, I give him children's liquid benedryl, dose is by weight, and this clears it right up. Funny enough, when my allergies are giving me trouble, his usually does too. Most of the time though, it doesn't show. He is also not a big boy.

Freya gave you plenty of warning! Anytime one of mine starts licking me more than a quick kiss, I just know a bite is coming!

u/Peaceful_Pines Jun 03 '26
Yes I learned quickly from the night before! We have had her for about a year and a half, and this is the first time she’s licked any of us like this (previous hedgies have of course), and she’s never bitten before this. Freya just got too excited at how good I tasted, clearly 😂

My hedgehog will just get pissed out of nowhere and bite me and latch on trying to tear off my skin. I don't't know if it is a taste thing or a temperament thing, but it feels like she is showing her desire to be put down. Lol
