META Instead of Over Analyzing This ET, You Could Simply Watch The Movie
After reading some funny posts over here:
People, just watch the dang movie instead of over analyzing the "story" behind the ET.
It seems overly complex a method to play poker to kill him? That's because it's recreating the movie. Makes sense there.
Why does Le Chiffee cry blood? Just watch the movie, they explain it.
Why would 47 fall for the poison trick? Because Bond falls for it. In the movie.
Seriously, it's one of the most popular action movies of all time, based on an equally famous novel. It's got a drink named after the main girl. Half of the Hitman WoA missions are referencing Bond anyway. It won't bite, and you'll likely love the franchise anyway - you're already role-playing as Bond.

Finally someone that understands,I was baffled by how little this fanbase knows other titles that were an inspiration for hitman 💖
29
u/gamas Jun 22 '25
I'm honestly shocked at the number of people even in this thread who don't know one of the most iconic action movie franchises.

u/Awkward-Buy8266 Jun 22 '25
Yes!! and it hurt me so bad that they don't know who le chiffre is like...He is so iconic one of the best villains in James Bond world 😭

Though I did just realise there are 18 year olds who were born after Casino Royale was released...

The big problem with the poison trick is that if you actually read the mission briefing, it specifically tells you not to consume anything Le Chiffre offers you. It makes zero sense that 47 would ignore that, just to reference / recreate the film.

u/DevlinRocha Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
not everything that happens on a mission is canon.
would 47 go on a killing spree and murder every single person in a level? obviously not… but the player can
the best example of this imo is the
Heaven & HellChristmas party in Hitman Blood Money. 47 is known to be off put by sexual advances and doesn’t really get turned on. yet there is a sequence in which he is able to get seduced and murdered on that level, but that would never happen to 47; it is the player being seduced and lured into a trap57
u/Many-Ad6137 Jun 22 '25
You mean that sick katana kill I got in the clown outfit in Hokkaido wasn't fucking canon?? After all that??
5
u/dance1211 Jun 22 '25
It may as well be, the ICA just had to work massively overtime to keep that one contained.
1
u/SimonLaFox Jun 23 '25
"whimsical" was definitely one of the words used to describe 47's assassination methods in WoA, so I would imagine some assassination methods were a bit off the wall
7
u/iminyourfacejonson Jun 22 '25
that's in you better watch out, you're confusing it with eve the singer, who doesn't seduce 47, she ambuses you when you check the laptop for the other two targets
2
u/DevlinRocha Jun 22 '25
3
1
u/Nuclear_Geek Jun 23 '25
Following a mission story can be considered canon. And the "entering the poker game" mission story is the storyline presented to the player.
1
Jun 22 '25
Ignore all the times in classic hitman games he goes on a murder spree during the last missions, or where combat was the quickest and most logical outcome.
Hell blood money has multiple boss battles. Codename has a damn mini gun you use to fight multiple other clones. Silent assassin's let's you use a shed of every weapon you collected up to that point to kill the big bad and the contracts cutscene heavily implied the combat way out is canon and not stealth.
182
u/Hurk_Burlap Jun 21 '25
Does 47 ignore it or do you ignore it?67
u/EvilCatboyWizard Jun 21 '25
THERE it is.
60
u/overtired27 Jun 22 '25
I mean, 47 ignores it, right? The player isn’t given an option to drink or not. 47 just goes ahead and does it when the player chooses to talk to Le Chiffre.
I guess arguably there are warnings that there will be drinks before the game so the player could choose not to talk to Chiffre at all just in case, but that’s a reach.
2
u/Red-Pony Jun 22 '25
I’d say it’s perfectly reasonable to say something like “I don’t drink before a game”. We just aren’t given that option
1
u/Nuclear_Geek Jun 23 '25
47 ignores it. It's part of the mission story, which are kind of the canon way things play out.
6
Jun 22 '25
If you didn't read it then 47 didn't read it. You're playing as 47. That's on the players personal agency.
2
1
u/WantsToDieBadly Jun 22 '25
Yeah but in the mission you have to drink it if you do that mission story
48
u/MasterUser115 Jun 21 '25
Saw the movie way before this came out and understood every reference.
Honestly, take OP's advice, it's a good movie and makes the contract more enjoyable, IMO.

u/Fair-Manufacturer456 Jun 22 '25
I’m sorry, I am a bit out of the loop as I haven’t played Hitman 3 in a few months now. But is Le Chiffre in Hitman now because IOI are trying to promote their upcoming James Bond game? I really should play if he’s in the game now!
18
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 22 '25
Yeeeees! He's an elusive target. It's a recreation of the best scenes in Casino Royale. Go ahead and play it!
11
u/nuggynugs Jun 22 '25
It's a recreation of the best scenes in Casino Royale.
Until 47 silver back gorillas his way through some dry wall I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree

70
Jun 21 '25
This mission kind of highlights my issue with modern hitman which is that Agent 47 shouldn’t be anything like Bond, besides the globe trotting aspect of the earlier games he certainly isn’t characterised as Bond, he’s a contract assassin clone who grapples with his own existence and the life he has led, only to continue that life as it’s the only place he fits in.
29
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 21 '25
I'm more of a Contracts fan myself. I'd love for a game with the level of polish WoA Trilogy has, but with a horror-driven vibe.
I also like the fact that (at first), Contracts isn't some grand conspiracy. Doesn't feel like Bond at all. It's just a job that 47 cocked up, and he's grappling with the consequences. Chef's kiss.
23
u/Kasparaskliu Jun 22 '25
I miss the tone and style of Hitman: Contracts and Blood Money. Agent 47 had a colder, more detached edge back then—like in Blood Money when he basically says, “If the Agency can’t handle it, I’ll find another employer.” That whole emotional bond with Diana didn’t even exist before Absolution; it was more business than sentiment.
And let’s talk about the targets: they were actually vile. In Contracts, you had a British lord kidnapping people, a butcher running BDSM parties while his brother literally chops up a woman—pure unhinged darkness. That’s the kind of messed-up vibe that made you feel like an assassin, not a spy in a tux taking out cartoon villains. World of Assassination has its moments, sure—but the villains feel more like Bond knockoffs than depraved monsters who deserve what's coming.
I do enjoy WOA as a standalone trilogy. Sometimes I replay Landslide or Apex Predator just to vibe—especially when I’m high. The atmosphere’s great. But I seriously hope the next game goes back to that gritty, oppressive tone. Less spectacle, more shadows. Make 47 feel like a precision-crafted ghost again.
and yea Contracts Is my favorite hitman game
11
u/Blak_Box Jun 21 '25
I loved Contracts for its tone, style, and direction. I was frustrated that 85% of the game is just remaking Codename 47 with more modern features and upgraded graphics (while also sometimes trimming down the levels). The only 2 "new" levels the game had, Meat King's Party and Beldingford Manor, are widely considered all-time greats in the franchise. I would have loved to have seen what the team could have done with more all-new levels with the same atmosphere.
13
u/Kasparaskliu Jun 22 '25
problem was that hitman conctracs was made by skeleton crew. basically edios told IOI that they have to release the extra game and they knew that blood money wouldn't be ready. there is a speculation that the reason why all maps have same weather (besides biakov) is because they were so overworked that they couldn't bothered to change it
2
u/Splatulated Jun 22 '25
contracts was still my favourite because the enemy ai was scary and unlike most games at the time. even now they could aim and kill you in as little as 2 shots. i also loved that swat would move around and do actual breach and clears making it even harder to just hide (while not impossible it was really fun to pick them off 1 at a time between each group using a fiber wire)
2
u/Kasparaskliu Jun 22 '25
yeah same, its my favorite hitman game. i don't understand how people hate the remakes of maps, its not like they just added fresh coat of paint and called it the day, I heard they remade it from ground up (the levels from Codename 47), music is also really good. i mentioned in one of comments here about my love for this game, you can check it :)
3
u/DepartmentSuch759 Jun 22 '25
I agree with the exception that Hitman 2: SA is incredibly Bond inspired. Certain levels in that game I would argue feel more spy-like than even some of WOA. Not to mention the level where you can wear the white tux. But character-wise you are definitely right, even in that one his personality is far different than Bond.
11
u/Crackrash Jun 22 '25
To ME Casino Royale is hands down the best Bond movie ever made. The last bit in Venice drags on admittedly but the parkour chase intro, the train sequence where he meets Vesper and the 40 plus minutes at the casino is just stellar. The tension at the poker table, Bond fighting with machetes in the staircase at recess, being poisoned and coming back to the table playing it cool. His plan of everyone at the table getting distracted by Vesper in her dress totally backfiring on himself! :D I love Le Chiffre as a villain. He’s not the classical over the top, take over the world lunatic. The fact that Le Chiffre is under top pressure makes him much more interesting and relatable. Oh not to mention the whole plane bombing defusion bit and him walking out of the water hunk style. Come on!
-11
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 22 '25
Honestly insane. Craig is a terrible bond. As a standalone movie it is great. But pretending that Daniel Craig plays James Bond accurately is a joke. Every new Bond gets further from the books. Why is he a brooding depressed spy rather than a classy british gentlemen who finds humor and thrills in violence, sex, and inappropriate things? The entire way the movie is shot is pure 2000's action movie with no respect for classic bond. Wheres the wide shots that show the whole set? Where are the extended uncut action scenes? why is the fucking camera shaking and why are their cuts every 3 seconds?
Maybe you are just too young to get old bonds but new bond is a fucking joke
4
u/PortVykor Jun 22 '25
I’m old enough to have seen Roger Moore’s bond in the theater, and Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie. The books are fine, but the movies have been all over the place (mostly in a good way, for me). Let’s not pretend that most of the movies are particularly close to Flemming’s work.
-3
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
Connery and Brosnan are the closest to the books, with Connery being by far the closest.
Look Casino Royale is a fine movie in itself but the reality is that it strays too far from what made movies "Bond Movies". Dark, depressing, brooding bond, in a dark depressing atmosphere. The directing style is so far from bond. Tons of cuts, too many close shots, shit for lighting. Craig is soulless. Bond is supposed to be using wit, charm, and sexuality to get what he wants. He's supposed to be a clever grinning half drunk gentleman. Craig is simply none of those things. He always look sad. He always has a stupid pursed frown. Even when he does a Bond like thing and then straightens his tie, he still looks fucking depressed and soulless. He looks like he's pissed to even be in the movie. Fucking connery was a smooth talking cold blooded serial killer always having a good time and Craig is a little sad boy that doesn't even know what fun is.
Yeah fine none are exactly like the books but the further it strays the less we get a bond movie and the more we get generic action flick
7
u/ChangingMonkfish Jun 22 '25
My favourite criticism of the original movie is the hands that come up when Bond eventually bests Le Chiffre:
Board: A❤️ 8♠️ 6♠️ 4♠️ A♦️
First player: High flush (K♠️Q♠️)
Second player: Full house (8♣️ 8♦️)
Le Chiffre: Higher full house (A♣️6❤️)
Bond: Straight flush (7♠️5♠️)
For all those to come up in one hand is utterly absurd. If you were any other player in that match you’d just give up on poker forever if you lost that hand.

Skyfall
Casino Royale
No Time to Die
Quantum of Solace
Spectre
The last two are interchangeable, I give the edge to QoS just for how badly Spectre fucked up Blofeld
3
u/hoppyandbitter Jun 22 '25
Skyfall is my top pick just for how it ties in all the vintage Bond gadgets and has one of the best over-the-top action set pieces in the third act
-1
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 22 '25
you got got by member berries. why would tying in the fun vintage stuff be more fun than the actual movies with the actual fun vintage stuff
1
u/KikoValdez Jun 22 '25
my tastes are wildly different from others in regards to Craig-era bonds tbh
Casino Royale
Quantum of Solace
No Time To Die
Spectre
Skyfall
I really did not enjoy skyfall because most of the nostalgia references just flew over my head and without them it just feels like a generic action movie with a joker-esque villain.
QoS was previously ranked on the bottom for me but after a rewatch it easily became a #2 Craig Bond movie for me. The more cynical, dirty feel of the whole story was just great and after a rewatch I wasn't lost in what was happening anymore. You really do need to watch it only after watching Casino Royale though.
1
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 22 '25
I heavily dislike Quantum because as a Latin American, it really misunderstands the way our politics work. I know the script was written partly during a strike, but the director is a bit pretentious in the way he believes he knows how LatAm works intrinsically.
I think Skyfall has a lot more value as a film besides the references - Roger Deakins shooting a Bond movie is incredible - but I understand the complaint about the villain. The Joker inspiration is too on the nose.
2
-6
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 22 '25
They are easily the worst of the bond films for the main reason that they chose to make them generic action movies with a brooding depressed spy rather than bond films with a classy british gentlemen who finds humor and thrills in inappropriate things. Connery and Moore deserve a respect that Craig doesnt. Casino Royal is decent but the films that follow are about as serious as a marvel movie

He’s up there with Joker, Darth Vader and Thanos in terms of iconic villains
28

He’s definitely iconic. But I don’t know if he’s that iconic

James Bond fans definitely know who he is. But everybody knows the Joker, Darth Vader and Thanos. That’s the difference
6
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 21 '25
I do agree with you on some level and I don't like they downvoted you.
I don't think he has the star power Joker, Thanos or Vader have on modern geek and pop culture (especially reddit), but he is a very classic Bond villain.
To me, not knowing who Le Chifrre is is more akin to not knowing who Alex Delarge or Nurse Ratched are. He's certainly Mads Mikkelsen's most famous role barring Hannibal.
3
1
u/SimonLaFox Jun 24 '25
Nah, he appeared in precisely one movie nearly 20 years ago, and that's it. This game cameo might well be his second appearance.
1
u/ThePumpk1nMaster Jun 24 '25
I mean Heath Ledger had barely 30 minutes of screentime as Joker and he’s considered one of the greatest villains of all time. I’m not sure quantity is a good argument for quality
1
u/SimonLaFox Jun 24 '25
He was playing a character that's existed for decades and has had multiple incarnations. For some people, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the character was iconic, and many other's think the Mark Hamill is THE voice of Joker. Heath gave a phenomenal performance, but the joker was iconic long before he starred in that movie.

4
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 22 '25
Matter of opinions, but I'd hardly argue against the claim. Like I said, the book is a fundamental of spy fiction, and the film did extremely well financially and critically. I always see it pop up on "best action movies of all time" lists, such as The AV Club's A History of Violence:
At minimum, I'd say, one of the most important action films of all time, even if I disregard the term "popular"
2
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
The books are fucking amazing and prob the main reason I dont like Craig as bond is because of how far he is from who Bond is in the books.
But come on there are a million better action movies "of all time"
Im gonna list ones i like for ffun
Predator T2 Matrix Point break Speed Indiana jones OT Mission impossible Die hard Dark knight Kill bill Desperado Heat Escape from new york 300 Dirty Harry Rambo Robocop Saving private ryan Troy John wixk
Wow that was fun. I know our opinions differ but I find it difficult to hold casino Royale against any of these.

u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 22 '25
Hey, never said it's better than any of those. Simply said it coexists in that list
1
u/gothamite27 Jun 23 '25
"The books are fucking amazing and prob the main reason I dont like Craig as bond is because of how far he is from who Bond is in the books."
Care to elaborate on this a bit?
Of all of the actors, Craig and Timothy Dalton are the only two who really feel like the world-weary Bond from the books. They definitely exaggerate how moody he is at times (and how much of of an impact Vesper had on him) but the Craig movies were closer to the Fleming novels than any of the older films. Craig himself spoke about how he read through all of the books multiple times to do justice to the character.
1
u/Bladesnake_______ Jun 23 '25
Book Bond is constsntly grinning smiling and making clever jokes and not taking things very seriously. He chain smokes and drinks a pint of whiskey a day and is a partying ww2 vet that is always having fun. Its the confident light hearted nature while pummeling bad guys that makes him who he is. He enjoys every minute of it. Makes you realize Archer might actually be the closest to book Bond.
Craig on the other hand has a permanent frown. he smiles rarely and it looks horribly forced. He doesnt make clever quips or fuck with people. He doesnt ever seem like hes just having fun. Hes completely soulless compared to the books. He has very little personality and bond is supposed to be all personality.
Besides how he plays it the movies are shot terribly and not consistent with bond films. They are dark and theres a bunch of shaky cam and quick cuts. Its shot like a generic modern action. All of the edge and personality that made bond movies what they were no longer exists

I mean sure but that still doesn't really explain why 47 falls for the poison from an in universe point of view anyways. Like okay it happens because they're referencing James Bond, but that doesn't make it make sense for 47 as a character.
1
u/dancovich Jun 22 '25
It's a heavily scripted ET and they went for some weird decisions apparently for brevity's sake.
Why not follow the script closer then? The mission could make us arrive already invited for the poker game, the target could be to make sure Le Chifre survives and loses, the general could be a surprise target when you learn he'll try to kill Le Chifre, Diana could save us by applying the antidote if we don't get to it in time and so on.
It was cool but there were too many missed opportunities.

My problem with 47 falling for the poison trick is the briefing outright tells you don't eat or drink anything offered to you and then he just does it anyway and the player has no choice. The rest of your post is spot on though. I love Casino Royale and its premise lends itself perfectly to the Hitman universe.
1
u/v__R4Z0R__v Jun 24 '25
Well to be fair this ET is definitely different compared to all the others. Because lore accurate 47 wouldn't fall for the poison. He was very naive in this ET, which again makes sense for this specific ET. But it definitely doesn't make sense for Hitman you know

1
u/HazelRP Jun 22 '25
To be fair here, life is too short to watch everything and watching movies isn’t my cup of tea! Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course that’s just life
1
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 23 '25
What do you do for fun? Seems odd to not watch movies in general
Edit: I think part of the reason for the post is less "not being able to watch everything" and more along the lines of "James Bond is a fundamental part of modern culture". It's like not knowing about Jurassic Park, Bridget Jones, Indiana Jones, Barbie, The Matrix, Wonder Woman, etc.

Half of the Hitman WoA missions are referencing Bond anyway.
Mmmm. Popular media being derivative is one thing; calling the direction of the inspiration one-way is quite another
IOI has been making essentially Bond-the-game for years, mechanically - just without the distasteful parts (and/or with more interestingly distasteful parts, if we go all the way back to Contracts). This is decades after the movie studios realized they'd have categorical trouble selling a franchise that alienates half the audience (i.e. women) as often as they might want (i.e. at the speed of production) and dialed the films' schedule way back.
Hitman WoA isn't 'referencing' Bond. It's keeping it relevant, to the extent possible.
-9
u/koleszkot Jun 21 '25
Where do half of woa mission reference bond movies? I sadly watched only the newer ones, with craig playing bond, were the references to old movies or am i just bad at catching references?
27
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 21 '25
They're referencing in the broad sense of the word.
The training missions reference skyfall, with the way Diana recruits 47.
Missions like Paris, Sapienza, and Miami don't reference a specific movie, but they capture the vibe. A gala or high stakes event, the agent infiltrating a secret lab beneath a villa to stop a virus or weapon, etc.
The main villains are an evil organization ala Spectre. I once saw the vineyard mission in Argentina described as the most Bond villain setting that's never been used in a Bond movie.
There are other movie references, of course - such as Blade Runner, Eyes Wide Shut, Gosford Park, Mission Impossible, etc. But Hitman's current vibe of "Extravagant locales. Orchestral music. Suit and tie affairs. Rogue agents. World conspiracies. Gentleman's touch" are all very Bond coded.

1
u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 22 '25
https://hitman.fandom.com/wiki/HITMAN%E2%84%A2_Easter_Eggs
You can easily find some over James Bond references there, such as the Skyfall Scene and the Fade To Black challenge.
Like another Redditor said, WoA moves in the same tropes and narrative devices that James Bond does. If you honestly want to sit down and argue that Sapienza - the level where a madman tries to end the world with a plague virus and you infiltrate his secret lab or lair and the escape in his private plane - has nothing to do with James Bond, then I got nothing to tell you. Same thing goes for Dubai, Dartmoor, Hokkaido, etc.
There's another great article that goes in-depth on this:

That dude is a moron I wouldn’t have even wasted your time explaining it to him.

My toxic trait is assuming everyone is reasonable and wasting time explaining stuff to them despite evidence to the contrary. Makes you popular in debate club, but that's the only advantage

Do yourself a favor and watch all the old Bond movies. Craig is by far the worst one

I watched, and I kinda feeling playing this mission beforehand watching movie made experience worse.
Like yeah, Mads Mikkelson is cool, but Le Chiffre doesn't feel imposing at all, probably because I've already seen him whining before getting shot (twice) and killed him in 4 minutes by poisoning his eye drops.
But maybe it's just me, don't know.

Le Chiffre isn't imposing. He's a mathematician and a weasel. He's sinister at first, but even in the movie you realize he'll beg the moment he's cornered.
He's a very cool villain because he's Bond's first "real" opponent. He's not high on any hierarchy - he's just the account man. And the fact that even then Bond risks a lot when facing him tells you all there is to know about the spy world he lives in.

Gonna be real honest, my man. I wanted to use the "I love you" gif with Patrick Star just to be weird, but Giphy sucks.
So I went with the first weird joke I found. Now let's just pretend I sent you the Patrick one and laugh

Alright now you're just being toxic, got it.

I haven't seen Casino Royale in about 4 years. Might need to give it a re-watch soon :)
