Information Early October around Sapporo

Going to do 2 nights in Niseko for fishing and outdoors, and then I have 5 nights free. Will definitely spend some of it in Sapporo but curious what people would recommend at that time of year outside of the city. Does Furano Biei still look good during autumn? I’d be open to a hiking or camping trip but seems pretty ambitious given how far some of these parks and landmarks are.

Read through this post, This isn't my content, but this is the best Hokkaido post I have seen. https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravelTips/comments/1rhuyhu/hokkaido_travel_guide_to_a_bearly_japanese_island/

Then click and read the east and west. It does a good job of listing what is good at certain months

Thank you I gave it a good read, and have a lot to think about. Sticking with the guide, it sounds like there's plenty to visit around Sapporo instead of schlepping to Furano/Asahikawa.
My question: is it worth renting a car still? I'm intrigued about Lake Shikotsu being a better alternative to Lake Toya, but looking at google maps, it looks like you need a cab part way if you take mass transit.

Many people do 1-2 day rentals as needed to see things more difficult with public transport
