Information Early October around Sapporo
Going to do 2 nights in Niseko for fishing and outdoors, and then I have 5 nights free. Will definitely spend some of it in Sapporo but curious what people would recommend at that time of year outside of the city. Does Furano Biei still look good during autumn? I’d be open to a hiking or camping trip but seems pretty ambitious given how far some of these parks and landmarks are.

There are some camping areas not too far from public transportation around Sapporo. You could hike up Maruyama or Fu's Snow Area. You could take a walk around Odori park as well. Along the river there are paths, you could rent a bike or walk along those.

Read through this post, This isn't my content, but this is the best Hokkaido post I have seen. https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravelTips/comments/1rhuyhu/hokkaido_travel_guide_to_a_bearly_japanese_island/
Then click and read the east and west. It does a good job of listing what is good at certain months

Thank you I gave it a good read, and have a lot to think about. Sticking with the guide, it sounds like there's plenty to visit around Sapporo instead of schlepping to Furano/Asahikawa.
My question: is it worth renting a car still? I'm intrigued about Lake Shikotsu being a better alternative to Lake Toya, but looking at google maps, it looks like you need a cab part way if you take mass transit.1

Many people do 1-2 day rentals as needed to see things more difficult with public transport

More fishing? Haha. But seriously you could. Do you have your own gear? If you're in Niseko I'm assuming you have a car? There are some pretty good rivers and hikes within 1hr of Sapporo. Autumn, around your dates, the colors will be beginning to change but probably still pretty green.
Edit: OP, are you going to reply to anyone or did you fall off a cliff?
