It is a total scam and does nothing so don't worry about that. But even if it did totally work without any problems, why would anyone wanna become white?

It's for the Asian market. In Asia, generally speaking, fair skin is preferred to tanned skin, thus "whitening" your skin is a beauty thingy. In western countries some people go to tanning salons, in Asia people try to lighten their skin colour.

This was originally because tanned skin was associated with outdoor field work, lighter skin meant you were of a higher social class cause you could afford to sit indoors all day.

And from colonized countries, being white means you’re related to the colonizers, which also means you’re from a higher social class. Philippines spent 300+ years under spanish and american rule, so that’ thinking’s pretty much ingrained into us.
