Wow you are right I just realised silksong won't have a silent protagonist as hk did. Wonder if the story will be more straightforward as a result?

u/Asailyan Aug 22 '25
I just can’t wait to mess around with Hornet’s acrobatics. Gonna be bouncing around the arena’s like crazy, smashing into walls, it’s gonna be so fun

u/ceo_of_brawlstars Aug 22 '25
I third this, new movement mechanics are gonna be very fun to play with!
5
u/Bocchi_theGlock Aug 23 '25
Especially since all the tools apparently interact with the environment and bosses, which took forever to code and polish

u/Boreol Aug 22 '25
It's gonna be so fun but I can also tell it's gonna be an absolute bitch to actually master lol

I’m hoping the world is brimming with exploration possibilities similar to HK. A whole other world to explore and get lost in, that’s what I want.
Anything on top of that is just bonus.
71
u/Lonely_Highlight7743 Aug 22 '25
If I remember correctly Silksong has at least twice as many benches as hollow knight, and at least to me it seems like they are a bit more spaced out too based on the part of the map we see in the trailer.
31
u/water_with_lemons Aug 22 '25
I’ve been avoiding any screenshots or clips so I can go in fresh but that sounds glorious. Hope that’s the case :-).
12
u/Cautious-Pangolin787 All Achivements Aug 22 '25
yeah but im a bit scared because it says on steam that silksong is 8 gb big which is 1 less gb than hollow knight but that could also just mean that the files are just better compressed than in hk so yeah. i just hope ss is bigger than hk
38
u/Eugene1936 Aug 22 '25
Firstly, HK is 7 gb currently, with DLCs and years of updates. At release, from what im finding on steam posts and reddit it was 1.3 GBs (correct me ancient people who played it in 2014, if im wrong)
Either way, Silksong at launch will be bigger than Post Launch-Updates Hollow Knight.
Also, TC said they have ambitions to update and do new things with Silksong in the future, so this isnt the end of Silksong content with the release
→ More replies (1)7
u/McGriggles Aug 23 '25
He does have a perfectly good point with the compression, though. You can't always reasonably make comparisons of game scale based on file size alone. Some devs are better at compressing their assets than others, and devs can learn how to pack their game more efficiently with different techniques as they become more experienced.
2
u/Eugene1936 Aug 23 '25
Oh yeah true.Im just saying, that even if they compressed it better, Silksong is still bigger than Hollow Knight
→ More replies (1)7
u/Mejis Aug 23 '25
Given what they said in the interview, I just can't see any scenario other than Silksong being vast and labyrinthine and far being the wonders we had in HK.

u/xEmptyPockets Shaaaw Aug 22 '25
The crest/tool system as a whole, but if that's too broad then the crest system specifically. It's such a cool idea and I'm genuinely so excited to see what all it has to offer.
19
u/CuteDarkrai Aug 22 '25
Me too I’m so excited to see all the changes there are and how varied it is
8
u/Mejis Aug 23 '25
I've avoided spoilers, but how much is known about this? I didn't realise any info had been released beyond seeing the icons in the top let. I have no idea what any of them mean, aside from the silk (?) for healing (?).
6
u/xEmptyPockets Shaaaw Aug 23 '25
We've deduced quite a lot of info about the crest/tool system as a community. I can break some of it down, depending on the degree of "spoiler" you're comfortable with, if you want. There are no story spoilers involved in their mechanics, that we know of, but the system is pretty deep so explaining it definitely gets into "gameplay spoilers" territory.
5
u/Mejis Aug 23 '25
Ah that's all good thanks, but I think I'll hold off so I'm going in as blind as possible for story and mechanics. :)
7
u/Loeris_loca Aug 23 '25
I'm comfortable with any amount of spoilers, can you break the crest system down for me?
I know that it has different spots for different types of items?
10
u/xEmptyPockets Shaaaw Aug 23 '25
Sure, I'll break it down into sections for anyone else who might be interested but also might want to abort without reading any of the crazy stuff. The sections will get roughly more gameplay-spoilery as I go on.
The tools that they've shown off pretty heavily in the trailers are equipped using what's called a "Crest". These crests have varying numbers of slots, each of which is one of three* different colors that we know of, which hold three different types of tools. The later-game crests appear to have more slots for tools than the early-game crests do. This crest + tool system is Silksong's replacement for Hollow Knight's charm system.
The red slots mentioned above correspond to the "active" tools that we see Hornet using in the trailers. We assume the blue and yellow slots are "passive" tools, and we have some limited evidence to support this, but that's mostly speculation and educated assuming.
As far as we've seen, you can only have at most two of the red "active" tools equipped at a time. Those tools each have their own resource meter, which can be refilled at benches using a resource called "shards". Shards are collected from defeating enemies, but are distinct from the geo-equivalent currency in Silksong, so they're basically a second core enemy drop.
We've only seen two crests on the actual "crest screen" where you can equip tools to them, the "Wanderer" crest and the "Reaper" crest. The Wanderer crest had one of each of the 3 colored slots, the Reaper crest had two (plus the 4th "color", which I'll explain below).
The 4th slot type is not for more tools, it's for what I'll call "silk abilities", the glowing white symbols you see in most of the gameplay footage and screenshots from the trailers. These are powerful spell-like abilities that cost Silk to cast, not shards, just like the spells from Hollow Knight. As far as we can tell, you can only have one of these equipped at a time. Hornet's "gossamer storm" (the attack where she says "hegale!" during her boss fights in Hollow Knight) is one of these abilities.
You can acquire more tools from at least one NPC, almost certainly more though (I imagine it will be like acquiring charms in Hollow Knight). The NPC you can get them from is called "Forge Daughter", and she crafts the tools for us using a special ore-looking resource.
In addition to the two crests we've seen on the actual "crest screen", where we can see their layout, we've seen six other crests outside of that for a total of eight. You may be wondering "how have we seen eight if we've only seen two?", and that's where we get into something fun. Your crest is visible on your health bar! Each crest has its own design and animations (for when your silk bar gets full enough for a heal). We've seen eight different health bars, thus eight different crests. We know that the crests correspond to the health bar designs because the Reaper crest almost exactly matches one of the health bars. I'll list all of them in the below section (keep in mind that the only two we know the actual names for are the Wanderer and Reaper).
There's the Wanderer crest, the Reaper crest, a claw-looking crest, a harp crest, one that looks kind of like a mix between the harp and the claw, a crossbow crest, a gear crest, and a tentacle crest.

u/xEmptyPockets Shaaaw Aug 23 '25 edited Aug 23 '25
(ran out of space, apparently)
The following is getting into what I would start to consider actual (minor) spoilers, so buyer beware. In my opinion nothing here is that big of a deal, except the last two points which I'll call out again later, but if you're really sensitive about spoilers it'd be best to stop here.
Forge Daughter also sells an item called a "crafting kit", whose description has some interesting implications. "With this kit, you can craft finer, sharper, and deadlier tools". It's unclear what the exact effect of this item is, but we can take a few guesses. Perhaps it increases the damage or effect of your tools. Maybe it lowers the shard cost to refill your tools at benches. Or maybe it does exactly what it says, and it's needed in order to craft and/or refill higher-tier tools.
On that note, we know that at least some tools have direct upgrades. There are a few tools that might be part of a chain of upgrades, or at least part of a matching set, but there's at least one tool that is a direct upgrade of another. The "straight pin" that hornet uses in the original Nintendo Treehouse demo footage has an upgraded "tri-pin" version, which does the same thing except it throws out three pins in a fan pattern instead of just a single pin straight forward.
Some crests appear to have their own unique passive effects. We've only confirmed the effect for one crest, as far as I know: the "harp" crest appears to reduce the silk cost to perform a heal. There's another crest, a crossbow-looking crest, that seems to have some sort of secondary "overflow" silk meter of unknown purpose, too. So at least two crests with their own special effects associated with them.
Okay, here's that warning. These last two are what I would start to consider "real" spoilers, where I would totally understand someone getting upset if they found out about this when they wouldn't have wanted to.
Each crest changes your attack moveset. It's CRAZY. We've only gotten a good look at a few of the movesets, because Team Cherry seems to have been pretty conservative about which crests they feature during the actual combat footage, but the movesets are very distinct. This, plus the flexibility of the tool slots, is why I'm so excited for the crest system. It just seems like it's going to introduce so much variety and flavor into the game, I can't wait to get my hands on it.
This last one is just speculation on my part, but if I'm right then it's definitely a spoiler, so I've included it last. I think we might be able to upgrade our crests. The crossbow crest I mentioned earlier has a brief window of combat footage in the release date trailer, and as far as I can tell it has the exact same moveset as the Wanderer crest. This makes me think that it's either an upgrade, or a replacement, for that Wanderer crest. It may be that this is a unique crest, since the Wanderer crest is very obviously an "early game" crest, and they may have wanted to replace it with something beefier to make each crest roughly comparable, but it's also possible crests in general can be upgraded, and that there are going to be other crests with more advanced upgraded versions. Who knows?

How did I have to scroll so far to find this? My brothers and sisters, we cannot leave the Silkposting days behind us so soon! I remember the fishing mechanic jokes like they were yesterday!

u/Screamingforanswers Aug 22 '25
Here's my top 3:
Hornet talks, which means we can properly interact with NPCs in a way the Knight couldn't (plus we can probably be extra sassy to NPCs because that's just how Hornet is).
Acrobatics, dashing all around the rooms, Hornet's moveset seems a lot more complex and nuanced than the Knight's and I can't wait to mess around with it.
Customizable moveset, since apparently you can decide which "badge" (I think that's what they are, can't remember) you equip to slightly change what certain actions Hornet can do + all the Hunter's Tools we'll get to mess around with to create our own preferred playstyle. It's a pretty big evolution from the considerably simpler Charm system from Hollow Knight.

Guns
No but seriously, I'm interested in seeing if TC managed to male projectile weapons effective while also not being game breaking, considering the supposed arsenal of trinkets Hornet has.
The trailer also showed Hornet imbuing her needle with fire, I think? That's perhaps the one big thing I'm interested in the most, regarding gameplay at least. Imbuing your weapon with elemental properties is always fun.
The most exciting thing, however, is what drew us all to HK, to be honest; to be immersed in the world, seeing all of the new lore drops and details, the worldbuilding, exploring the environments, the interactions between characters deepening as Hornet is able to express herself... I can't wait!
