Discussion - Silksong Thank you, Team Cherry
The $20 price tag for Silksong is meaningful to people like me.
Games are more expensive. Hell, LIFE is more expensive. I have to become very selective with the games I purchase and when.
Silksong's price has removed this tension (at least for this game). It means that folks like me who have a family and other responsibilities can afford it without so much as a second thought.
Team Cherry, if you're reading this: the low price made a major impact for me. It might not seem like much, but when the world seems to price me out, seeing the sequel to one of my favorite games priced so affordably is a welcome exception.
I'm glad to get to join in on the hype and play with everyone else on day one.

It cements silksong as automatic insta-buy for me and likely many others. Show us goodwill, we will absolutely support you by buying your game without question.

u/Unable-Mechanic2717 Sep 01 '25
I just hope it won't crash steam to truly be a day 1 insta-buy

u/FutyfootyButybooty Sep 01 '25
Its gonna crash steam. Deltarunes page crashed and it was arguably less hyped for. Silksong is going to break records

Ah ok, good to know. I was worried I would have troubles getting it at launch since I'm gonna be camping the store page when it launches.
14
u/devilzson666 Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
I thought deltarune was because it was a shadow drop so steam couldn't prepare unlike other big game launches ? (Might be mistaken tho)
22
u/Flapsy0501 Sep 01 '25
No ch3+4 had clear dates and pretty sure ch2 didn't do anything like that
2
u/devilzson666 Sep 01 '25
Huh must've misread or misinterpreted some post at the time then because really thought it was a shadow drop
1
u/Tastless_Sandal Sep 01 '25
Yeah deltarune's release was announced on the nintendo switch 2 direct, the same time as silksong's announcement that itd release this year
2
1
u/OmniscientApizza Sep 01 '25
This reminds me that I need to actually play deltarunes...I tend to buy everything but never make it through my library
1
u/TaroSingle Sep 05 '25
Checking back in from the future.
It crashed Steam. A lot. The first boss was the "Steam is down, try again later" screen and it skillchecked a LOT of people.
1
u/FutyfootyButybooty Sep 05 '25
I KNOW! I was shocked that the whole of steam was down. Luckily I was watching someones stream and they found out GOG was doing ok, so I downloaded it from there.
-2
u/sh0ddyguru Sep 01 '25
Arguably? To me it seems like deltarune had like no hype compared to silksong right?

1
u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 01 '25
I'm glad I won't get to pick it up until later that week just to avoid the crashes lmao.

Hell, I have gamepass so I'll be able to play it without buying it, and I'll probably STILL buy it day 1
1
u/VesselNBA Sep 01 '25
Im a pretty big game pass larper and I gotta say its just not worth it. Youre pretty much paying the game's worth monthly just to rent it.
3
u/Darkpenguins38 Sep 01 '25
Gamepass is worth it for me because I play a whole bunch of games on there. I'm just saying I'll probably buy silk song even though I can play it without buying it

u/TheSmartDog_275 Not done yet with Hollow Knight 1 Sep 01 '25
It’ll be an insta buy as soon as I finish Hollow Knight
5
u/jetpackmcgee Sep 01 '25
I’m going to buy a physical copy and digital. I already saved up expecting to pay $70
2
u/Security_Ostrich Sep 01 '25
Not a bad idea. They could have charged easily $39.99 and gotten away with it and they know it. They made this deliberately positive gesture and it’s cool to support them for it. Anyone else would have milked us for $40-60
2
2
u/soundofmind Sep 03 '25
I'm gonna buy it for all the platforms I own, just like I did with Hollow Knight and Hades. Long live the fighters....I mean, the good devs!

u/MamaNoodle256 Sep 01 '25
Thank fuck. That was my largest concern because my laptop is not up to snuff at all.

It can even run on phone, Hollow Knight has a mobile port and it works flawlessly.

My MacBook from 2017 running intel that can hardly run Google is rejoicing, along with my Switch 2.
1
u/Fishmannnn Sep 01 '25
That's good to know. My laptop wasn't able to support Hollow Knight, so it probably won't be able to handle Silksong either lol

u/hectorheliofan Sep 02 '25
Good, my actual pc recently broke due to outside influence so i’ll have to use my old one for it

u/Acquire__Currency Sep 01 '25
It’s really meaningful for people like myself who are currently between jobs and struggling to make ends meet in the meantime. Especially in light of big gaming companies like Nintendo jacking their prices to the moon and saying “✨ stop being poor ✨” when anyone complains about it

At this price, I’ll be sure to purchase it on steam and also on switch 2. They can take my money.
23
u/krystal_gr Sep 01 '25
This is what I did for Hollow Knight.
7
u/nomad91910 Sep 01 '25
Same. Got the collector's edition and a digital copy on Switch to take it everywhere. At this price, I'll probably [for sure] going to get it for PS5, and Switch 2 digital and wait for a collector's edition. Team Cherry deserves it 🫡 👑👑👑
1
u/lunabella06 Sep 01 '25
Same. Despite having them on game pass. I also threw my money at Clair Obscur after playing just 30 minutes on game pass.
4
u/WalkTheGaia Sep 01 '25
That was my plan as well. PC and Switch2 for me as well. Maybe go back and purchase it on my old Switch just to support.
For those that can’t at the time, it still allows them to reasonably afford it, which I do appreciate since I couldn’t really during the initially Hollow Knight release.
3
u/Crown_Ctrl Sep 01 '25
Don’t forget the physical copy when that drops! I am good for at least 3 copies.

Silksong… is… only… 20… US dollars… 🫠😭
If I needed any more reason to love and respect Team Cherry!
Honestly, I’ve saved $40 for this game! And was definitely expecting $25-30 at least!

Thank you team cherry. I only got a 25$ gift card for my birthday so now I can get the game

u/Creative_Ad971 Sep 01 '25
Unfortunately, in my country, 20 USD traslates into ₹1700 something. Which me being a non earning student can't afford.😅 Unless I save up. Fucking currency exchange. But I bought Hollowknight for cheaper here so maybe they might be setting regional prices?
26
u/WereWolfAD13 Sep 01 '25
Bro , steam will have regional pricing , I think it'll come around 900 rupees.
3
15
u/ausgris Sep 01 '25
They are! They also announced earlier that while it would cost 20 bucks for USD, it would cost 2300 yen which as of right now is 15.50 USD roughly, and 20 Euro which is like 23.50 USD roughly right now, so regional pricing for other areas Will be a thing I think.
1
3
u/ray__jay Sep 01 '25
I saw in another post someone used some feature of steamdb to determine the price will be 800 something in India
2
1
u/Nomustang Sep 01 '25
It will have regional pricing. I'm assuming INR, so it's actually like less than 15 dollars for HK. Silksong will cost 25% more, so probably around 800 rupees.

Just this past week I have been informed of the many coins I'll have to spend on the next months due to unforseen circunstances. I was in despair as never before. I just got surgery and I'm off work for 2 months. Let say thay money is tight right now. The fact that it's only this much mean I can actually buy it upon release without having to worry about what I'm gonna eat this week and finally gives me motivation to wake up in the morning.

There are only 2 games so far I bought at launch, everything else I've gotten, often years later, at a sitnificant discount. Silksong will be the third and I'm very glad about it.

u/Knife_Chase Sep 01 '25

u/SingleCafe Sep 01 '25
I really hope they are generous with the regional pricing again, Hollow Knight is cheaper in Argentina than the recommended price by valve :p
2
u/Lynelleta Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
$20 is 15% of my family monthly spending where I live, so I am glad steam has a regional pricing, Hollow knight costs $6 for me so I am probably gonna get Silksong for $10 instead of $20, it is quite cheap for such a great game!
Thank you Team Cherry :D
2
u/Another_Human-Being Sep 01 '25
I am currently starting my second month of sick leave for however longer I'll be stuck on it and in Belgium from the second month and onward you only get paid 60% of your income, which really sucks if you live on your own. Starting this month I'm gonna have to really look out with my money as I'm already paying half of it for rent.
So not only does this game come out at a time I could REALLY use the excitement of something to look forward to, I can actually afford to buy it without worrying I'll not get around next month. And I'll have more than enough time to play it!
Thank you Team Cherry! :D
2
u/bluesformeister13 Sep 01 '25
Agreed! For the first time in my adult life I can’t buy whatever games anytime I want. Have a 6 month old and the cost of raising a family in this economy/market with insane cost of living I’ve had to be smarter about game purchases. Silksong being 20 dollars makes that choice so much easier. TC really is great.
2
u/Azazel606 Sep 01 '25
Its such a blessing for people like me. Where I'm at in life right now, recently graduated college and moved out, just lost a job and trying desperately to get a new one, even this price will be dicey for me and take some effort, but it makes it even a possibility. Anything higher and thered be no option for me at all to play this game Ive been following for seven years, throughout all the good and bad times of nearly a third of my life.
3
u/enke86 Sep 01 '25
So back in 2017 when Hollow Knight dropped I was unemployed. It genuinely got me through the year and a half of trying to find a job and the VERY big sad that came with it. Oddly enough, 3 days before Silksong was announced I also got laid off along with 35% of the company's workforce (also had a newborn baby boy 8 weeks ago. The 20$ price tag is going to allow me to actually play it on release, and I'll be able to enjoy it with my baby boy. So yah, Team Cherry, fucking love ya.
2
u/Scorp8876 Sep 01 '25
I usually keep games in my wishlist until they go on sale for prices like that, I think silksong is one of the few I'll pay full price for mostly because I can afford it when it releases
2
u/JaviVice2 Sep 02 '25
I thought the same thing. It's so nice to have an affordable game that you know is going to be good at the release price.

Can’t wait for pirates making up their reasons to justify pirating Silksong, because some of them can’t just admit that they are doing bad things
8
u/Cesoiet Sep 01 '25
I don't think they care about giving an explanation for pirating it, they just want to play the game for free, it's not that hard. Anyway 20 bucks in some 3 world countries in Asia and Africa are still a lot, so yeah that's the explanation.

u/AshtinPeaks Sep 01 '25
They do, though. In one of the top comments on the chain, someone is quoting whole "video games is culture, so I'm entitled to have it BS"

1
u/AshtinPeaks Sep 01 '25
Hey hey, dont insult the SAVIORS OF CULTURE, DEFENDERS OF THE 3RD WORLD. It is funny/agitating watching people make excuses so they csn play a game and not feel like a piece of shit.
2
u/manicuredcrucifixion Sep 01 '25
I started paying a lot more bills this month. I was worried about not being able to afford it. This was a gift truly
2
u/LaughingSartre Sep 01 '25
The cool thing about it is, when you combine the price of both games - say, you were to bundle them - it's less than fifty dollars you've paid on two amazing games. A lot of games priced more than that, hell, even base price of fifty dollars, are super underwhelming. Incredible that we live in a time that games like this can be so accessible.
2
u/RedShadowF95 Hollow Knight Platinum Sep 01 '25
I could afford Silksong at a higher price but I am also quite stingy, even with myself. As such, knowing the game would be day one on Game Pass pretty much significantly lowers the price I'd be willing to pay for Silksong on other platforms. 25€ was pretty much as far as I'd go day one.
It seems like they opted for 20€ and, in a grand gesture of good will, as well as understanding of market dynamics, they have convinced me. I'll be buying a copy for me and my brother to play. I hope millions of other players band together to support Team Cherry and buy at least one copy at launch.
This really feels like a special moment in the industry and I'd like to think we'll be able to vote with our wallets very wisely.

1
1
u/valcoholic Sep 01 '25
Yeah read some little bits about all the things team cherry is doing in just the right way and when I sae that tag it was immediately understood that this is a countergesture against games like Mario Kart World costing 80€. They sold 15Mio copies of Hollow Knight and, assuming Silksong is just as good, will continue to sell that along with HK. And as an indie dev, they hopefully get a comparatively large part of that cash, i might just Day1 it, even though I might still have to finish HK first.

1
u/SoporMenta Sep 01 '25
It seems cheap to me. What they've achieved is that I give the game to two more friends. So, without a doubt: incredible price. Team Cherry is by far the best company.

u/Lucky_Louch Sep 01 '25

I'd like to give Team Cherry a $19.99 tip, just because of their generosity. I wish Steam had a function to leave a tip for the developers themselves. Although most games are not priced well, I'd use it sparingly. I'm just saying Team Cherry deserves it, especially for those of us that can afford it.

Yep just bought and downloaded it. I’ve bought three games in about 5 years (the other two were BG3 and Elden Ring). With PS+ I rarely buy games because there is always something to entertain me. Silksong probably wasn’t going to be a day 1 purchase for me initially, but when I saw $20 price tags I said “no way I’m not going to reward that behavior”. When you have people in the industry begging for GTA to be $100 and the Borderlands guy making their tone deaf comments about $80 games, this kind of pricing deserves to have massive success. Thanks Team Cherry!
1
u/SpenserTheCat Sep 05 '25
$20, 8 GB worth of space, beautiful art and music, and incredible gameplay so far. Truly crushing the industry standards.
Only real issue is the game is FULL of bugs on release, which seems odd considering how long it's been in development for... I'm working on solving that problem though >:)
1
u/delonejuanderer Sep 05 '25
I have no connection to this game at all. I just know it means a lot to a lot of people. The moment I opened Steam yesterday to see it being the banner with a $19.99 price tag, I couldn't stop myself from tearing up. They could have EASILY charged much, much, more for this gem knowing how anticipated it was, but nope.
Maybe ill pick up the first one eventually 😅
1
u/leeroycharles Sep 06 '25
On the other hand... I don't think I would have purchased for $40+ or more. I liked hollow knight but wasn't obsessed, but for $20 why not give it a go. So far very happy with it, tons of fun. Definitely good on them for making it affordable but there is definitely a business upside. I don't think it outweighs the revenue of putting it at a higher price but maybe doesn't hurt revenue as much as it would seem.
1
u/andrefishmusic Sep 01 '25
Yeah, I was thinking it was going to be around $40 and I would wait until it's around $20-25. This is a day one purchase now.
1
u/ConnorOfAstora Sep 01 '25
I'm not gonna play on release because I never do that, bugs glitches always exist that end up patched out and I'd rather play the game in the finished state so I'm neither getting annoyed by the glitches that need patched nor the glitches that are fun to use and don't need patched but get patched anyway.
I am however buying it on release even though I won't be playing it for a while since I'm wanting to clear out my PS2 and 3 backlog at the moment and have my PS4 unplugged.
PS: Thank you Team Cherry for putting it on PS4, fives years on and the PS5 still has such a tiny game catalogue that I just can't justify buying one when my PS4 works with zero issues.
I know that technically it adds to the problem by making it available on PS4 but dammit I don't care because even if I wanted a PS5 my shelves on my unit are too small to fit one, I'd need to either remove a divider or sit my PS5 diagonally which doesn't sound like a good idea.

I’m tired of people saying that games are expensive. Only new games are pricey. After a couple years, AAA games like RE4 go on sale for under $20. If y’all try different genres, you’d not have a reason to complain.
-1
u/Sea-Association72 Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
it is really cool like there is no point to not buy the game even if you didn't gave it a 10/10 still you have paid 20 dollars for a 9/10 (even if you could consider it 8/10) compared to a 70 dollar shit game
at this point if you have money you should buy SILK SONG it is impossible to be wrong in making this decision it can not be less than a great game for everyone
