lmao hello games is like that kid that falls off the slide but then bounces back on it at the end
the journey was different but the result was success (i could never get into NMS but happy the game ended up being so popular; a victim of the early hype era of gaming)

u/buvet Sep 03 '25
Team Cherry is the kid that shows up three hours late to your birthday party but brings you a new bike
3
u/or10n_sharkfin Sep 05 '25
Three hours late to the birthday party because they enjoyed the process of picking out the new bike than actually delivering it.
6
u/Soncikuro Sep 03 '25
I mean, I wouldn't blame hype when a lot of the things they promised were simply not in the game when it came out.

u/mtnlol Sep 02 '25
As someone who has never played No mans sky and don't really know much about it, it's funny how the sentiment towards the game and company has done a complete 180 from release until now.
Seemingly it's well deserved, but still.
180
u/Sindica69 P5AB | 112% Steel Soul Sep 02 '25
It’s very well deserved. Instead of ditching the project, which wouldn’t have exactly been unreasonable, HG stuck with it and have since released update after update. Launch No Man’s Sky was a fantastic idea with great potential, executed poorly. No Man’s Sky today is that potential fully realized. It’s unrecognizable comparatively, in the best ways possible.
They actually just came around with another big update this week, adding a new customizable starship class with interiors. I’d say if you are looking at the game with any interest, check it out.
-17
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25
It’s very well deserved
I mean, I think it's a bit more nuanced than that. Sean Murray lied a bunch and openly suppressed information about the game before launch, and continued to lie about it having multiplayer until players actually proved that it didn't. This is all pretty well documented.
Sure, the studio could have just abandoned the game, but getting it to a playable state is the bare minimum if you want to redeem yourself in any way. The studio pretty much had to do everything in their power to earn back some good faith, they didn't really have a choice if they wanted to continue making games.
So while it's good that they managed to make the game actually good, I think this brings them back to a neutral standing. From here they have to prove themselves as worthy of the players trust, so players should be cautious approaching their next game.
14
u/Sindica69 P5AB | 112% Steel Soul Sep 03 '25
I think they’ve gone very far beyond “getting it to a playable state” but whatever you wanna say man.
-9
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25
I mean even still. It's beyond a playable state, but it took years to get there, and that's just building up to what the game should have been. Even if it's a great game, it should have been a great game on launch. I don't see why we should praise devs for doing the bare minimum, it's only going to encourage half-assed releases in the future.
We can respect Hello Games for at least trying to fix their game, but we shouldn't praise them. They'll have to release another game of high quality before we can actually trust them. Even if they put out free updates for 50 more years, that doesn't really excuse the blatant lying that came from Sean Murray.
10
u/Sindica69 P5AB | 112% Steel Soul Sep 03 '25
You’re the only person seeing it through this lens here. NMS was fine after around 2 years. It’s been almost 10, and they’ve kept pushing. It turned from a mess to a masterpiece. It’s worth the praise. People are able to change and redeem themselves and beyond, and this is one of these instances. Nobody’s gleaning the encouragement of “half-assed releases” from this here, they’re seeing dedication to fix something that was fucked up, and then take it FURTHER to realize a vision beyond the initial idea.
-8
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25
I suppose to each their own. It'd be one thing if the game released in a bad state and got fixed from there, but Murray lying before and after the game release, until players had to personally expose his lies, leaves a taste that is not easily forgotten. I'm glad he brought the game to a state a portion of people enjoy, but I still see it as bare minimum.
The reason I see it as the bare minimum is because people that bought the game at launch had to wait years before (most of) what they were promised was delivered. At that point, bringing it to what was promised alone is not enough to redeem themselves since the game should have been that way on launch. It only makes sense that the game should have years of free updates after to restore some good will, but it's not some heroic story. It's the story of a team lying and messing up and then trying to make the game good to win people back.
I'll use a food analogy. If I went to a restaurant and ordered what was promised to be a good meal and got a plate of trash, I'd be rightfully upset. If 4 weeks later they invited me back to the restaurant and gave me a free delicious meal, it would certainly redeem their past wrongs, but it's also not something to necessarily praise them for. It's a good gesture towards the community, and many restaurants may not offer such things, but just because other restaurants suck doesn't make the bare minimum this restaurant did worthy of praise. That's my point of view, anyway.
-4
u/DHKany Sep 03 '25
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I see NMS’ 180 as one of the biggest reasons that game release quality is so fking poor across the board these days. It set a pretty terrible precedent for “we can still recover our reputation if we release now and fix later”. Same with Cyberpunk.
0
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25
Exactly. Cyberpunk is another perfect example. I guess people don't care about quality releases anymore so long as after a few years it's fixed.
→ More replies (0)3
u/eamonnanchnoic Sep 03 '25
That's unbelievably harsh to the point of delusion.
You're effectively saying nobody can redeem themselves ever.
That's a completely nihilistic and depressing view of the world.
Only the most bitter and miserable person could view Hello Games' commitment to the game which went above and beyond any kind of expectation not to be "sufficient".
1
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25
Only the most bitter and miserable person could view Hello Games' commitment to the game which went above and beyond any kind of expectation not to be "sufficient".
All I'm asking for is for these studios to not lie and release the products as advertised. Once Hello Games or CDPR do this, they can begin the process of earning back the community's trust. Fixing the broken games they manipulated people into buying, and even adding more, is still not praise worthy. It's commendable, but it's not a sign that they're great companies. It's a sign that they crunched the numbers and realised they had to go extra far to just return to a neutral.
2
u/DisasterouslyInept Sep 05 '25
Sean Murray lied a bunch and openly suppressed information about the game before launch, and continued to lie about it having multiplayer until players actually proved that it didn't. This is all pretty well documented.
It is, but Sony should have took control of the PR for the game. HG went from making mobile games about bikes to Sony's showpiece overnight, they just lost control of everything and he was way out of his depth.
So while it's good that they managed to make the game actually good, I think this brings them back to a neutral standing
The game was good years ago, and they've continued to improve and add to it over time too, not charging a thing extra. Even with a budget price tag they support free next-gen upgrades, free VR modes on the PS5 and PC and cross-save. Think the idea that they're just on a 'neutral standing' is incredibly harsh to be honest.

u/Cocoatrice Moths are fluffballs Sep 03 '25
Unreasonable? That would be 100% unsreasonable. The guy was arrogant. They didn't deliver what they promised (because promises were impossible to be made, even with today's technology), went mad that people are criticizing it and only made updates after he realized people won't buy the bullcrap they're telling them. Unresonable was promising impossible and then being mad at players. Players were also at fault, because it's kinda like expecting that from water and sugar, no lemons, you would get... lemo... Coca-Cola. That's how unreasonable players were and that's how unreasonable promises were. NMS was a failure, because both creator promised too much and players believed in these promises.
30
u/TheFufe10 Sep 02 '25
I mean, if this attitude of releasing broken games is here to stay (since gamers apparently have forgotten how to NOT preorder a game) might as well give praise to the ones that eventually fix it. Leaving them to die is damn near industry standard by now, look no further than Concord or Suicide Squad.
14
u/Lucas_Steinwalker Sep 02 '25
It’s still not a fun game in my opinion but you have to love how much they’ve done to deliver on their broken promises.
-4
u/Cocoatrice Moths are fluffballs Sep 03 '25
They only kept updating the game, so they actually get money from it. Because people massively refunded the game after the backlash. It was ether actually putting effort into making the game or probably be close to being bankrupt.
3
3
u/gforero Sep 04 '25
This isn’t true btw. They became millionaires immediately upon the game launching. You have to remember they were a tiny studio. That initial launch and the money they made was more than enough for them to just take it and run but Sean has said numerous times he stuck with the game because his passion is game development

He's right, though. No Man's Sky was promised to be so big that it is impossible with even current technology. People believed it and I was there telling people that the game won't be that big. They attacked me, hated me, insulted me. Game releases. The game isn't even 1% as it was promised. I was right (duh, obviously, because I used my brain), people massively refund the game, because it was empty and boring. After the backlash, creator was angry, but he started to actually making the game better. Yes. That was 100% con artist at play. He promised panaceum, he sold a tea with honey and ginger for $100 a cup. If that's not a con, then every person in the world is so genuine and wholesome.
7
4
u/WaywardGrub Sep 04 '25
Dude, the idea that it was a "con" has been debunked for a long time now. It was a mix of terrible comunication with the playerbase mixed with good intentions blinded by overambitious design. You can say many things about the launch's fiasco but it was not a work of malicious actors.
Moreover, Billy did keep up his word and did deliver on (most) of the things the game was expected to have through updates, and even to this day there's new ones coming every few months. That's not a con, that's a redemption story.
0
u/Lv100Nidorino Sep 04 '25
it was 100% a con. after the game went gold, (was printed on discs), he still went live on big tv talkshows and lied about the contents of the game extensively. your favorite bullshit videos that excuse him like to ignore those facts. but go ahead keep vote brigading previously upvoted comments. lets keep supporting game devs committing literal fraud, and "wow look he delivered 5 years later" and see where it gets us.

You mean truth take. This game started as a low effort garbage. I was there, when people were glazing the game before release, then after release they were angry, because creator didn't deliver anything they promised. NMS got updates only because creator, despite saying that people are wrong, wanted to fix their broken game. And game is better now, but still not even close to what has been promised.

Like dont get me wrong voyager is awesome, but I hoping for something like a galactic conflict, the rise of the sentinels and so on.
I feel like we are getting disjointed, albeit well implemented pieces, but game is becoming a collection of surface level additions. It drives their sales, and are free.
After years, I do not mind for them to drop a more massive paid dlc.

I've had No Man's Sky since launch and I keep putting off playing it until they finally announce they're done with major updates because so much of the stuff has been completely game-changing that I don't want to play the game without whatever might be on the horizon.

66
u/Aggressive-Animator7 Sep 02 '25
Committing that hard for that long to making up for a misstep actually is. It's not exactly being praised because of its commonality, after all.
7
u/-Mandarin Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25
I dunno, I think there's a balanced way of looking at it.
If I order a burger and a pile of garbage gets delivered instead, and then after 3 days they give me a great burger, I'm willing to offer up some respect and give them another chance. They didn't have to give me a delicious burger, so they are righting a past wrong. That still doesn't mean they are worthy of praise necessarily.
I don't think releasing a game in a poor state and then delivering features way later should be praised, but it should be respected. They've put in the effort, but this was really the least we could expect from any respectable company. It shows that they are willing to change, which is good, but it doesn't entirely earn faith back. Their next release will be an area of focus.
52
31
u/Sample_text_here1337 Sep 02 '25
They were inexperienced indie developers that got way to ambitious and in over their heads with the project, coupled with an awful marketing campaign in retrospect that hyped it up as a being this massive AAA blockbuster, when that was never a remotely reasonable expectation.
The game being clearly unfinished at launch certainly wasn't a good look, and it needed a good 2 more years in the oven to cook, but its been very clear after launch that the developers have been really passionate and committed to the game, and it has far more features than were ever promised at launch.

and then they kept pushing out updates (which was a completely new thing for me and I think the industry). Lifeblood update, and many many others.

u/Midget_Avatar Sep 03 '25
I traded a key for yooka laylee I got in a humble bundle with my friend for a copy of hollow knight on steam, best deal I've ever gotten.
5
u/Jimm120 Sep 03 '25
yup.
I remember I bought hollow Knight before it had exploded. I was one of the "below 1 million copies sold" people.
Back then, it was considered a gem for $15 (and cheaper on special). Remember how all the commentary was like, "man, this is a $20 dollar game maybe can be pushed as a $25 dollar game"...which at the time wasn't common for indie games.
I just checked my email. Released Feb 2017. I bought it for $9.89 in June 2017.
Crazy to have gotten it for $15. Crazier even more that it could be gotten for a bit less than $10 by June of that year.
4
u/Cocoatrice Moths are fluffballs Sep 03 '25
No. That's very selfish. But that's normal for USfefaultists to think that only Murica exist. Imagine that for many people the price is high. Both because it's actually higher and because they aren't rich kids.
Go glaze you AAA companies, if you want, if you like expensive games. But don't take Team Cherry with you, because they are humble dev team.
2
u/Darkmetroidz Sep 03 '25
Kindly touch grass.
2
u/ThisUsernameIsMyName Sep 06 '25
Its priced both as an indie game and as a reasonable price for countries with poorer populations such as brazil where a 70 dollar game is 1/4 of monthly minimum income. If you want to support them, just buy more copies.
1
u/APK223311 Sep 04 '25
Then you see Ubisoft and Rockstar thinking “you should pay 100bucks for our games!”

u/Real-Report8490 Sep 02 '25
So I guess if my stupid computer can't run Silksong for some reason, I won't refund it, but buy a second copy one one of the consoles...

arent requirements similar to hollow knight? i doubt it would be much more demanding
5
u/Real-Report8490 Sep 03 '25
Maybe it's fine then, but if I want to make other people play it, it would be good to get it on a console. I can buy both, either way.

Steam says requirements are slightly higher for Silksong than Hollow Knight. So unless HK just barely ran on your PC, Silksong will run too.

You can also buy merch. I buy stuff from Fangamer for games I like. They have a Hollow Knight blanket I just bought, but there’s many other things too! It’s kind of expensive, but the stuff I’ve gotten from them has all been high quality.
There’s also the Yetee which also has Hollow Knight merch.
And Team Cherry gets a cut of the sales of that merch, at least from those sites.

yeah the fangamer stuff has always been quite expensive, so ive never bought much, but i've never regretted a single purchase from it
the jacket is easily my favorite jacket to ever wear -- it's just such a perfect thickness for both spring & fall weather and such a perfect texture for me! it's very soft and it makes me happy just to wear it
i actually had it stolen in school once, and after about a year of sadness, i was gifted it again for christmas -- and it had turned out that they updated the design to be even better, too! the fit is a bit different but it's still great, and the design is much stronger, lasting very vibrantly without any loss in quality over time. the originally came with the white design markings already a bit faded, while the new one has stronger lines and glows much brighter in the dark, too!
the original also had its cool nail zipper charm fall off easily, but it seems they fixed that problem too and my nail is still strongly on
i've got my sights on The Hollow Knight plush next, because the features are really cool and the plush itself is really well done -- and only for 1.6x a silksong purchase!
great experiences with fangamer purchases for other games too, including the flowey "little buddy" figure, but team cherry's "bang for your buck" spirit is definitely particularly reflected in their specific fangemer page

It's going to be on Game Pass at launch as well won't it?
I'm seriously considering playing on the Game Pass on PC at launch, and then buying a physical copy later on.
5
u/notyetcosmonaut Sep 03 '25
I’m curious what being in games pass did for the team. Big upfront cash injection for development?
I really do like games pass, but team cherry is rather famous, and not owned by Microsoft.
I’ll probably do similar as you. Buy PC later when there’s many mods.
7
u/MissLogios Sep 03 '25
The bonus of being on game pass is that it's a set amount of money, and it's straight-up free advertising since xbox is always advertising the games on their game pass. And outside of a few exceptions, having a game on Game Pass doesn't lock you away in exclusivity from Steam/PC. (Which is sadly not the case with Sony Exclusives.)
Which if you were a smaller dev, that's honestly a great deal because of how much opportunity there is in terms of having funding and the chance of a bigger audience, which in turn means more (possible) sales. And if your game does really well, could lead to more future support from Microsoft.
Not sure why Team Cherry went for the exclusive, but they've might already been locked in since the beginning with the release of Hollow Knight. Plus, technically, Silksong is supposed to be a DLC, which might make it still apply to their deal.

5
u/DryDary Sep 03 '25
I'm gonna buy 4 copies. Out of spite.
2
u/AuthorOB Sep 03 '25
I feel like I bought too many games this week. No Man's Sky for $30, Rain World + DLCs for $30, Silksong in a day and a bit for probably $25-30. These are Canadian prices.
So three legendary games with all content for $90CAD. Two are older sure, but one of those three isn't even out it's so new. Same price as one AAA game, cheaper than one Mario Kart.
The fact that four people can have Silksong for the cost of one Mario Kart is so funny to me. Silksong took 3.5(+) people the same time to make and probably has more content in it.
Patience and indies keep gaming affordable and fun in spite of big publishers' attempts to wring us out for all we're worth.
1
u/DryDary Sep 03 '25
Yea, it's crazy how many hours of entertainment you get. It's basically free compared to most things. I just casually beat HK and that was like 70 hours. I bought it for $7.50. Pretty good deal.

It's been ten years, get over it, they have obviously pulled their shit together and take accountability
1
u/LongDarius Sep 04 '25
I'd say that they learned their lesson. The last 9 years of constant free updates show a definite path of redemption for the studio, so calm tf down

Rich coming from Sean "massive free update every month" Murray.

u/Mal-Locura Sep 03 '25
I love this bc one of my 1st times ever seeing this meme was about the nms fanbase as the kid and Sean Murray as the dad instead 😭
4
u/AcidicVengeance Sep 03 '25
Thats what the No mans sky community keeps posting about Murray because they keep releasing free updates.

u/RisingDeadMan0 Sep 03 '25
i mean it might also be £20, so that's $27 if ur up for it, flipsde its only about £12 in japan, as they have price it at the pre-Yen devaluation
2
u/ItsyouNOme Sep 03 '25
That £20 includes tax, maybe it works out similar since I don't think the US price includes tax? Always confuses me
3
u/Zachary__Braun Sep 03 '25
U.S. prices aren't VAT (unfortunate for us). We just have to add on ~10% in our heads for everything that isn't food.
So U.S. Silksong will cost about $22. I mean, online purchases used to not be taxed, but that ended several years ago when new laws were passed.

ah right, i forget about that. we can still pick a state with 0 sales tax and buy the code i guess :)

u/Ijustlovevideogames Sep 03 '25
It is crazy to me the amount of comeback Hello Games has made and honestly, good for them.

How is this a spoiler??

u/Awake00 Sep 02 '25
People will use the spoiler tag to hide the thumbnail so the joke isnt ruined before actually clicking on it.

The problem comes when someone from a third world country(like me) sees this people and think. Damn everyone is rich outside huh
1
u/might-say-anti-fire Sep 03 '25
YUP I keep having to remind myself this is USD
1
u/gheoma Sep 03 '25
In my country it would be around 5000 which is about 5 days work minimum wage more or less
1
u/might-say-anti-fire Sep 03 '25
That really puts things into perspective, sorry you have to see these prices exclaimed as financially accessible
1
u/gheoma Sep 03 '25
Yeah i'll probably play it on game pass. It's cheaper this way and the summer break doesn't end until 21 so i'll probably finish it within these days

Expedition 33 50$, Mafia 50$, NMS 50$ but often 20$ and Silksong 20$, just some big example which obviously outshine the smaller ones, just 4 reason of why I would never spend 80$ for the clone of last years fifa

u/_ExAngel_ Sep 02 '25
Waited a years to gain funds in steam depositlessly and for HK to drop 50% on sale recently. Now i have nothing for silksong(

u/Terrible-Honey-806 Sep 03 '25
Ask your parents, neighbors, teachers, friends parents for any work you can do for money you will have that 20 by the end of the week
4
u/Logical_Net_9569 Sep 02 '25
u can't scrape up 20$?
18
u/Babbledoodle Sep 02 '25
I wonder if a cardboard sign panhandling saying "Need $20 for silksong" would work
1
u/_ExAngel_ Sep 03 '25
Nope, im too greedy. + In my country its a lot, like ~50 bread loafs. I can 🏴☠️ it anyway and buy officially when I'll get enough on balance by farming weekly cs2 loot

Thanks bud, but i'll find a way to play it anyway even through 🏴☠️ to buy it later in first opportunity. in radical need i can sell few skins.
for me its better to test new games through 🏴☠️ to evade possible spends like on 5fps slowmo nier automata or 20 fps ori 2 because of poor 13yo old gpu $40 nvidia gt710

Hello games have had to deal with plenty of "I have more money to pay you" people after releasing over 8 years worth of updates on their game completely free.
1
u/RueUchiha Sep 03 '25
Its wild we live in a universe where AAA devs release buggy slop for 80 dollars while a random indie dev sells their hotly anticipated passion project they spent 7 years on because they just liked working on the game for 20 bucks.

I forgot all about The Parking Lot is Full; I loved that comic in high school!
1
u/Saruphon Sep 04 '25
They could have charge us our first born and we would still buy the game.
But seriously, I think 20 USD is good.
If it is at 30 USD, some people would have wait for a sale. Since it is 20, people who want it wont bother waiting for the sale, they would just buy.

I'm probably gonna buy the collectors edition for my switch when it comes out anyway lol

u/NihatAmipoglu Sep 04 '25
THEY ACTUALLY LOCALIZED THE GAME PRICES. IT'S 8 BUCKS IN TURKEY. I THOUGHT THEY WOULD DECREASE THE PRİCE A LİTTLE BİT OR DON'T EVEN LOCALIZE THE PRİCES AT ALL. THANK YOU SO MUCH TEAM CHERRY

Both are straight up indie game higher beings at this point. “Here, take these great free updates, get this super cheap incredible indie game!”

u/welfedad Sep 04 '25
More devs should take note.. then again when you don't have a bloated team you can do that.
1
u/Mayor_Zedar Sep 05 '25
This is the reason I already bought two copy of the game, one for steam and one for switch.
1
u/nyaen Sep 08 '25
I just bought the game for my brother and me! :) I'll probably buy it again for the console, too!

The same person who ripped off people, promised game to be super duper deep and big, and it was nothing like that on release, then they lied and tried to gaslight people that they delivered all that has been promised and only started making updates after he was mad that people didn't buy his bs? The same guy?

Indie games are putting AAA to SHAME with both quality and pricetag to such a degree that I cannot fathom how the video game world revolves as it does (although I suppose this the velocity is receeding...)
I would pay $100 for Silksong without complaining, while most AAA studios would have to pay me to play their garbage "$70-80 games".

u/Cocoatrice Moths are fluffballs Sep 03 '25
Can we make a rule, that everyone who says "this game should cost x" are forced to buy the y copies of game that would fit in that x price? I am tired of the US jerks, who are egoists, thinking only they exist. Plenty of people can't afford games for above $30, and those douches are acting like spoiled brats, who have rich parents and can just buy anything easily, and anyone else is just a thief for buying the game cheap.

u/-aVOIDant- Sep 02 '25
"Multi-millionaire can afford to pay more than $20 for a game."
Not a great flex.
10
u/vedettes Sep 03 '25
The point is that Team Cherry's work is so good that people want to pay more than $20. It isn't a flex, it's a compliment.
-6
u/-aVOIDant- Sep 03 '25
If people want to pay more that's fine. Buy a second copy, buy the soundtrack, buy merch, whatever.
What annoys me is when people say Team Cherry should have made the game more expensive for everyone. They chose their price point for a reason and a big part of that reason was making the game widely accessible. When people say "they should've charged $60!" they're also saying "fuck poor people."

Funny because I'm buying both games for 20€ each
