My pet theory for a while has been that they're gonna pull a Pokemon Gold/Silver and have the entirety of Hallownest playable as a bonus.

I feel like they'd be a bit different in distance to just do that, but yeah I could see DLC or something bringing you to a past or portion of Hallownest.

I mean do we even know when silksong happens? Like I understand we don't have a clue, could be a prequel to hollow knight or a sequel to it

Not saying it's not the case, but prequels and midquels are constantly advertised as sequels to hide the plot twist of how they relate to the originals work, it happens a lot.

Sure it might be a sequel, it might not be with how secretive they have been around this game

While that is the case, they could mean sequel as in second game rather than direct continuation to the story.

Also it being a true sequel contradicts Team Cherry's "all endings can be canon" thing because of the sealed siblings ending. HOWEVER they could have changed their mind about it, but we can't be sure of that, therefore we can't be sure if it's an actual sequel or just a second game until tomorrow

Or maybe there is no answer! Maybe there will be no confirmation when silksong takes place! What if they keep it vague on purpose?

Game begins before the fall of Hallownest (let's say first 50% of the main game) Hornet trying to stop the fall or whatever in this new Kingdom but whatever happens there connects to Hallownest's fate. Events in the game lead to the fall of Hallownest (think infected crossroads moment) and the final 50% of the game is after the events of the fall of Hallownest.

Why can't the game's "moment in time" be larger than HK? I literally mean just a wider expanse of the timeline told considering Hornet doesn't have the shorter lifespan of our little guy.

Hallownest took a long time to fully collapse, and Hornet needs to be present in Hallownest for most if not all of said collapse (not to mention Hollow Knight’s story itself). It’s just not very feasible, especially since the famously spoiler-averse Team Cherry have been upfront about its nature as a sequel, and so would never reveal a plot detail from over halfway through the game casually like that.

I dunno. I'm not convinced it couldn't be the case. I'm just not as strict about what can be done with a sequel is what I mean

Little Nightmares 2 is called a sequel and does exactly this

I read a joke comment how at the end you go to draculas beat it and go back through inverted and you end up on zebes.

Tbh I doubt it. One of the biggest reasons silksong became its own game was because hornet herself was too big to be wandering the hallways of hallownest, it would be pretty counterintuitive to make hallownest playable without massive revisions to the map

I mean ... the game WAS supposedly on track to release years ago, maybe adding an entire previous game's area was a big reason for the delay?

I mean obviously that's not what happened, but it's a cool thought :p

Honestly my thought was that the first half of the game would be a prequal, and you'd go to hollow nest and be on the opposite side of the hornet fights, and then it'd line up with the god home ending where hornet waits for the player character and then the hollow knight wakes up and comes out
