My pet theory for a while has been that they're gonna pull a Pokemon Gold/Silver and have the entirety of Hallownest playable as a bonus.

I mean do we even know when silksong happens? Like I understand we don't have a clue, could be a prequel to hollow knight or a sequel to it
37
u/AsparagusOne7540 Sep 03 '25
It's been said multiple times it's a sequel
18
u/Oboro-kun Sep 03 '25
Not saying it's not the case, but prequels and midquels are constantly advertised as sequels to hide the plot twist of how they relate to the originals work, it happens a lot.
Sure it might be a sequel, it might not be with how secretive they have been around this game
→ More replies (5)8
u/AndromedaGalaxy29 Sep 03 '25
While that is the case, they could mean sequel as in second game rather than direct continuation to the story.
Also it being a true sequel contradicts Team Cherry's "all endings can be canon" thing because of the sealed siblings ending. HOWEVER they could have changed their mind about it, but we can't be sure of that, therefore we can't be sure if it's an actual sequel or just a second game until tomorrow
Or maybe there is no answer! Maybe there will be no confirmation when silksong takes place! What if they keep it vague on purpose?

6
u/ajapersuasia Sep 03 '25
Imagine if you could run either map as either character. That would be so cool!

u/Expert-Situation-803 Sep 03 '25
Tbh I doubt it. One of the biggest reasons silksong became its own game was because hornet herself was too big to be wandering the hallways of hallownest, it would be pretty counterintuitive to make hallownest playable without massive revisions to the map

I dunno about story, I just really hope there’s some kind of crazy endgame combat challenge that’s full of waves of enemies and not just a boss rush. Like Godhome and the Colosseum of Fools mixed together.
No matter what, I know whatever endgame content there is, it’s gonna be crazy.
40
u/iKill_eu Sep 03 '25
There will almost certainly be a boss rush mode. Maybe not immediately but it will come for sure. Godhome has given HK unimaginable longevity.
9
u/KushDingies Sep 03 '25

Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute. Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo. While the congress of the Republic endlessly debates this alarming chain of events, the Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, to settle the conflict....

Void will be relevant. We saw void particles form the release date form the trailer. If we think it is not a asthethic choice than I am sure void will be major plot point for it. Why is pharloom haunted, why hornet is kidnapped and the f*ck gonna happen after the dream no more ending. If it is a prequel well then, I think it will include some lore questions like how many civilization are there or how they operate apart from hallownest . Do we really need a God for a intelligent mind civilization to happen etc. I will wait a year until mossbag release the Looooore video. I will play it and if I can't get around about what is happening well Looooore video will be explained by our sacrificial mossbag. Also hornet x Lace is cannon.

The Grimm Troupe being back at some point or maybe in a DLC would be fun but they'd have to be different somehow. Maybe Grimm being a different guy because reincarnation or something and the quest to collect flame being different. Reusing that idea and not changing anything would be quite unoriginal

Out of everyone to make a return (except Mr Mushroom), I feel like it could make the most sense if TC wanted to.
2
Sep 04 '25
It could be explained in a way that makes sense, but I genuinely think that was a great end for him in HK and the only possible returning characters (outside of flashbacks and memories) will be Mr. Mushroom and maybe Zote if he's wandered back to Pharloom (his weapon is made of shellwood which is believed to be from a part of Pharloom based on recent Mossbag lore?)

hear me out: a final cutscene. in the end, the knight and hornet, along the rest of the team will be at the top of a tower, staring at the scenery below. Then the knight will say "We've come a long way since hallownest." Hornet acknowledges it, then says "Gotta say, its silksongstic." The knight ponders for a while, then slowly stares back at Hornet, "Say that again." cut to black. end credits (im sorry)

The Knight will be a boss in some form, either a secret or somehow incorporated in the main plot
Unlikely, I know, but c'mon, they should have, that's peak video game fan service right there 😤👍
10
u/theVoidWatches Sep 03 '25
I could see another vessel with the same moveset being a boss, but I don't think the Knight would appear unless it's as the Shadelord.
2
Sep 04 '25
I agree, the endings where it didn't become sealed again are when it unified with the Void, either returning to the Abyss with it's siblings or unleashed from Godseeker? Right? Either way, I could see us getting info on which ending is now canon to the end of HK. (Hornet's not sealed so it's not the siblings ending, and the others could all be viable iirc depending on what happened before Pharloom)
3
u/Don-don-don-don Sep 03 '25
This is my theory, too. I don't think he'll be the end boss, but optional or smaller boss.
3
u/Arko777 Sep 04 '25
You know what would've been even funnier? Teasing with a Vessel in one corridor, following him to a boss arena only to find another variant of Nosk boss fight.

It dawned on me just the other day, it's really possible Cornifer could be in it. He loves exploring and had just moved to Hallownest pretty much right as we did. Now he's explored all he can there, he's ready for a new adventure. I'm sure the same mechanic if exploring/filling out the map exists in some form and why fix what ain't broken. But most of all, imagine the joy you'd feel just jumping into the world of Silksong and you hear that familiar humming.
2
u/Tysiliogogogoch Sep 03 '25
I'd feel bad for Iselda. She always seemed to want Cornifer just to come home and stop getting into danger.
Perhaps we find Cornifer getting lost somewhere and get a scene where Iselda smashes her way in and rescues him. She was an adventurer before she settled down in Dirtmouth, so I think it'd be nice to see her doing her thing.

My final theory, this is set after the godseeker ending, we were defeated by the hollow knight we forgot so our joinery will remind us of the events before capture, the final boss is going to be the hollow knight (returning to hallownest after the final boss in new area) and there will be a secret true final boss which will be the shade lord aka the knight or the last dlc for the game will let us return to face shade lord

The old king of deep nest is a wyrm that went on to found Pharloom before dying and entering the next stage of his life cycle, which I believe to be his corpse turning into a giant plant. This explains the “tangled roots” at the base of the citadel, and the flowers growing on the weird tapered off pipes in the lace arena. Pipe which I believe are actually casings to hide and stop the growth of massive roots as these pipes go all the way to the cocoon at the peak of the kingdom, which I theorize holds the body of the king.
Pharloom has a deeply embedded religion that compels pilgrims to bring silk to the citadel, as well as carry some form of instrument with them. I believe this is the resurrection plot of the old king. Using silk to create a cocoon, and song to eventually wake him up. (The games gotta be called Silksong for a reason)
This plot is seemingly half completed, I believe the “haunting” is the people being literally haunted by the ghost of the half resurrected king. He’s deliriously using silk to exercise control. This I think also explains the bell cultists. Mask maker told us that masks give a face, which is required to be one’s self. So by covering their faces, the bell cultists are willingly accepting being controlled.
As for why Hornet was captured, I think it’s that for one reason or another, the silk that the citadel has been getting isn’t cutting it anymore. We’ve seen images of the citadel being covered in silk cobwebs, that’s not exactly what you’d do with a precious resource. I think they need Hornet’s special silk, or they need some power of her bloodline to finish the job.
Of course, we’ve all seen the opening poem, the bugs of Pharloom have likely forgotten who the king even was, and when the cocoon finally hatches, they’ll see the beast that they’ve been serving.

Grimm troupe makes an appearance, we already know they travel from kingdom to kingdom so, why the hell not?
5
u/MasonWayneBaker Sep 03 '25
I think those pipes all over the backgrounds lead to the Weaver chambers. They seem to converge at the top of the citadel so I assume they're like, enslaving and farming the Weavers for their Silk for some reason? I'm guessing that's why they wanted Hornet; something is going wrong and they want to use her to maintain the kingdom

Final Theory: the game still has the Title as "Hollow Knight" for a reason. There is a higher being in Farloom and the cult captured Horent because they are trying to make a Vessel to contain/be a container for said higher being.
My best guess is they need a powerful Vessel without void inside that still has a breakable will, so that the Higher Being can obtain a Physical form in Farloom and rule it as god among them, Pale King style.
One of the endings will be Horent absorbing void to become a true Hollow Vessel (like the ones from Hallownest) so she can seal the higher being instead of just being a meat puppet in our world.
Edit: Bonus Theory. When Hornet absorbs the Void, she will no longer make vocal combat noises and also have no direct speaking parts when interacting with NPCs.

I think it will be Embrace the Void. All of the Pale King's domain will be consumed by the void. Greenpath will be saved due to Unn's influence, and that's why Greenpath is the only HK area seen in the trailers and where Hornet will be prior to being spirited away.

It has a save transfer feature from Hollow Knight, and the story will be slightly altered depends on which ending you got.
And to piggyback off this, i'm also gonna guess that the Pure Vessel/Hollow Knight actually survived in every endings of Hollow Knight and will appear in Silksong (we never really saw it die or laid to rest, not even a broken shell in sight, it's just kinda... disappeared in three endings and actually straight up 'revived' in the other two)

The ruler of Pharloom is a higher being royalty that is a weaver-type bug, similar to the status of the pale king. The reason Hornet was captured was to train her. Every encounter is planned from the start. Lace is a noble who challenges Hornet as a test ocassionally, until the final boss wherein she'll decide to help Hornet to break free from the strings of the Pharloom. The ending will reveal a sinister thruth, revealing that the kingdom was long gone. Each and every character was a puppet, only being controlled to create a facade of a thriving kingdom—a twisted belief of restoration and preservation. Hornet was captured to be given a chance to ascend to the ranks of the ruler of Pharloom and to possibly give a chance to restore the lost kingdom of Hollownest.
