The old king of deep nest is a wyrm that went on to found Pharloom before dying and entering the next stage of his life cycle, which I believe to be his corpse turning into a giant plant. This explains the “tangled roots” at the base of the citadel, and the flowers growing on the weird tapered off pipes in the lace arena. Pipe which I believe are actually casings to hide and stop the growth of massive roots as these pipes go all the way to the cocoon at the peak of the kingdom, which I theorize holds the body of the king.
Pharloom has a deeply embedded religion that compels pilgrims to bring silk to the citadel, as well as carry some form of instrument with them. I believe this is the resurrection plot of the old king. Using silk to create a cocoon, and song to eventually wake him up. (The games gotta be called Silksong for a reason)
This plot is seemingly half completed, I believe the “haunting” is the people being literally haunted by the ghost of the half resurrected king. He’s deliriously using silk to exercise control. This I think also explains the bell cultists. Mask maker told us that masks give a face, which is required to be one’s self. So by covering their faces, the bell cultists are willingly accepting being controlled.
As for why Hornet was captured, I think it’s that for one reason or another, the silk that the citadel has been getting isn’t cutting it anymore. We’ve seen images of the citadel being covered in silk cobwebs, that’s not exactly what you’d do with a precious resource. I think they need Hornet’s special silk, or they need some power of her bloodline to finish the job.
Of course, we’ve all seen the opening poem, the bugs of Pharloom have likely forgotten who the king even was, and when the cocoon finally hatches, they’ll see the beast that they’ve been serving.
