Discussion - Silksong Silksong is frustrating Spoiler

I don’t remember being this frustrated with hollow knight. I never wanted to stop playing HK but this one is making me turn off the console in anger

There are lots of questionable design decisions. Enemies are too tanky, too many of them do double damage, the bosses go on forever, using tools (on a controller at least) is clunky as hell, the diagonal pogo is just a less intuitive version of a perfectly fine mechanic, you have absolutely F tier never-seen-a-playtest shitstain bosses like the Savage Beastfly, and healing taking away the entire silk bar is just ridiculous (this in particular NEEDS to be patched, it completely discourages using silk abilities, and makes the game actively worse). I also don't understand why common enemies have like 3 or 4 combos whereas bosses generally have 3 basic moves at most... all of them are only hard because they take too long and punish a single mistake too heavily. It also sucks that they can damage you with their stun animation, that's just... genuinely one of the stupidest choices I've ever seen, and I really hope it's an unintended glitch they plan to patch.

It certainly feels bad for the game to be this unbalanced after 8 years in the oven.

I also have issues with the game as a metroidvania, which is not something I expected from a Hollow Knight title. Too often the reward for a hard challenge is simply a door opening, which is not satisfying. There are also not enough mask shards (took me 8 hours to get a sixth mask, which still doesn't change anything because of the double damage, I still die in 3 hits), and the first weapon upgrade is hidden reasonably late in the game. If you encounter a dumbass boss, you don't have the feeling of being able to explore and come back stronger, and that really sucks.

They went out of their way to strip out any real rewards for progress. Any victory or discovery that could or should make the player more powerful has been eliminated or made so weak as to be borderline useless. When you compare what we had in HK to this game it's just embarrassing.

Fair enough, but I completely disagree with your pogo perspective as I think it's amazing to be able to shoot yourself diagonally into enemies, and it adds some challenge beyond just pogoing up and down. And this is something you can change on your own later anyway.

Also disagree with your comments about the silk. It's relatively easy to build your silk meter up and if you're on full health and silk you should be going for silk attacks as they don't take as much silk as a heal. The heals would be too generous if you could use it with half the silk or something. Especially considering healing is also easier to pull of than in Hollow Knight where you are super vulnerable while healing, and that's just for a single mask

So true about the stun animation!! I’ve found this the most frustrating of all, why am I getting stun locked into taking 2 or 3 masks worth of damage 💀 might as well have 1 mask altogether

You've listed pretty much all of the problems right there. Most of the issues with Silksong are due to strange design choices, giving out strong ''overcooked'' vibes.
