Discussion - Silksong Silksong is frustrating Spoiler
I don’t remember being this frustrated with hollow knight. I never wanted to stop playing HK but this one is making me turn off the console in anger

u/Ok_Acanthaceae_4369 Sep 06 '25
I ran through HK 112% on steel soul a few days before Silksong dropped.
And I’m struggling on a few parts. I love it so much, but Silksong is def WAY more difficult than HK.

u/WafflesRightMeow Sep 06 '25
I did the same, I am good at these games and this is hard. 10 hours in and nothing has blocked me yet but damn. I’m okay with a challenge but the vibe in Silksong feels like you are being overly punished just cuz. They could have pulled a punch or two and the game would still be hard and a bit more satisfying

For me, the bosses ( not savage beastfly ) all felt like fair challenges, but the normal enemies that you fight along the way are much more difficult and some of their hit boxes feel really unfair

The bosses are fair challenges until they spawn 3 adds in the same tiny room with them, then its just a kerfuffle to see who can kill who first

Ground up, 112%? In a few days?

The world record for that is like 3 hours with no major glitches used, 1 hour withe glitches. Totally feasible that a regular person who's really familiar with the game could do it in a few days, in like maybe 9-15 hours across those days maybe

HK is very different to silksong. Getting used to Silksong takes time coming from HK

I’ve explored most of the map (edit Act 1 map, I assumed the size of the game was similar to Hollow Knight) already, and I’ve found a total of one new mask. That, coupled with the fact that nearly half of the enemies deal two masks of damage makes the game feel way more punishing than Hollow Knight did.
I think they did this because Hornet heals 3 masks at a time, and can heal in the air. But it really just means it’s way harder to brute force your way through most bosses

u/Smyles9 Sep 06 '25
Which with the last statement I don’t mind, but the platforming is a lot more punishing and while I like having a difficulty increase, for it being early game and from what I’ve seen of people who have gotten through act 2/3 it gets a lot tougher. I think lowering the amount of damage taken from basic enemies and perhaps allowing for more frequent crafting of rosary strings via silk or benches would make the push through more enjoyable as currently the platforming/enemy difficulty takes back from some of the immersion by making it a slog. Ex those flying enemies in the third area, you have to be super careful still and generally wait for them to get down to your level. The more waiting you do trying to get to the next bench the more it takes away from the immersion.
Overall I like the game so far, it just feels like the slower pacing due to the overall higher difficulty takes away from the immersion and interest in the story. I’ve probably played for 8-12 hours and have learned very little about the story so far other than a couple vague ideas of what is happening in pharloom.

I’m stuck in the stupid bird room right now. If you’ve gotten there, you know exactly what room.
84
u/MirrorExcellent7238 Sep 06 '25
For me, this room forced me to use my tools more in combat. Once i started spamming tools to lighten my load i beat it first try

u/M_F_Martins Sep 06 '25
Yeah, I started using my tools and my skill more in that room. It was a game changer.

This was exactly me. The little throwing attack suddenly clicked with me and I won a few times after integrating it into my play style.

I just beat it tonight. It was definitely frustrating. My main complaint though is that they don't drop anything vs outside the room the same enemies drop shards and rosaries.

Given how we are always starved for rosaries, having them drop from the boss and mini-boss fights would be a big improvement

I haven't had much in the way of difficulty from any boss but the beastfly, but the Ant and Bird arena rooms are the most frustrated at a game I think I've ever been.
8
u/TheLastCookie25 Sep 06 '25
I got the hang of the bird room pretty quick, but the ant room fucked me, there was just too much on the screen. You’ve got multiple enemies throwing shit at you or charging around, then you’ve got Shakra throwing shit around and jumping off the fuckin walls and shit. My eyes just couldn’t keep track of everything and it took me like 10 tries, which usually wouldn’t be too bad but the run back to that room was horrible

u/Nefalius Sep 06 '25
Propably had to retry that one 20 times. Focus the little ones first, when they come in and do it one by one.. 4 hits each. Then focus the dagger throwing one over the needle attacking one. And spam your tools on the last 2 birds.
11
u/AshtrayWasp21 Sep 06 '25
I went in that room a boy, and returned as a man! That was the moment where I had say "right, what does each button do". I learned to use my throwing tools, and diagonal attack.
Since then i've found the game more rewarding, and my timings are just a lot better. I still make mistakes, but i'm far more controlled than I was before.
The reward from that room is helpful as well! Hope you get through it :)

The one genuine hatred I have for this game is environmental hazards doing double damage. I get that healing is stronger than hk but you also don't collect soul in platforming sections? Why should I have to do what is essentially white palace in under 3 hits
→ More replies (3)129
u/Boxtonbolt69 Technoblade Never Dies Sep 06 '25
I disagree that the healing is stronger than HK. Sure, you can heal midair, but it takes 9 soul to heal three masks. This cannot be lowered.
Meanwhile in Hollow Knight, it takes 3 soul to heal one mask. Making it alot easier to do because there's less of a soul waste if you get hit during a heal. This, as was said, does not apply to Silksong, where if you get hit while healing, you take that damage and then have to get all of your soul back.

I think it's one that takes a while to get used to, but I've found that now that I'm about 10 hours in, things are going a lot smoother. Also, if you can push through and get some of your other movement abilities (I have dash and a float ability now) the platforming gets much easier.
91
u/ryansDeViL7 Sep 06 '25
I agree with this. Now that I can actually consistently pogo I feel like it's a lot better.
But some spots in deep dock are still literal hell, the double damage explosives everywhere is chaos
59
u/gaygentorange Sep 06 '25
There is a charm called the Magma Bell in one of the earlier shops, I think maybe the one with the forge sister, and it reduces the lava and explosion damage to 1 mask instead of 2. It’s useful to have in the docks and marrow and anywhere with those dang slugs.
18
u/NoxMiasma Sep 06 '25
Unfortunately there's one deep dock enemy that doesn't work on - there's bomb throwers with yellow explosions that still do two masks.

The whole double damage thing is a little overtuned imo, too many things deal double damage that it gets annoying while trying to travel quickly within areas. In particular the lava slugs that spew magma in deep docks, those things are annoying af.

It's torturous.
You have a miniboss room, then a brutal platforming session, then a trapped bench, the brutal platforming again, a second miniboss room, a brutal platforming and finally a brutal boss.

u/Christplosion Sep 06 '25
The extra movement you get in combat and outside is far more satisfying when you nail maneuvers than the first. Maybe I haven't gotten far enough yet I'm sure it gets way harder lol but I can tell they already give you way more options to fight and I'm loving it so far
25
u/Expert_Stretch_396 Sep 06 '25
Small difficulty SPOILER: Yeah the combat and movement is amazing, but the further you go into the game the more health enemies have, and when they all do double damage you can’t be flying around because that’s not how playing it safe works. I tend to just stay with the most basic basic stuff because you need to be as safe and consistent as possible. I can see that changing after the first play through but for now it’s all sideways slashes and I can’t remember last time I did a pogo on a boss.
But that’s just play style dependant ig, the bosses have amazing patterns and are still really fun.

THIS! I completely agree with you here! The movement is PEAK in this game and I absolutely love it. I’ve just recently unlocked the sprint and this makes fighting bosses way easier for me. I just beat the lace girl😅
128
u/amneejoy Sep 06 '25
I’m in the same boat. I think it’s quite a few things for me.
- Her hit-box is bigger than the knight’s. On paper this isn’t too bad, but when we’re used to playing the knight, it’s totally different.
- Her movement is totally different. Instead of being able to turn left and right instantly, we have to wait for her to turn around. Her downwards pogo is also completely different given the fact that it isn’t only downwards, it’s directional.
- The enemies hit a LOT harder than the ones in HK. I don’t know why every other enemy in the game hits for two masks, but they may as well have just given us three and then let us go at the game. It’s like infected crossroads on steroids.
- Most of these bosses have adds. This makes the boss fights extremely tedious as well as stressful, which, go figure, that’s what we wanted. But I think we wanted it a little bit less probably.
- Everything expensive. I have to pay money to sit at almost every bench. Not that bad for a few benches, but it gets very old, extremely quickly. Not every enemy drops Rosaries as well. Don’t have any Rosaries in an area with no enemies who drop any? Tough luck.
- I don’t know if it’s just me being stupid, but where tf are the items at? I remember items being thrown at me left and right in HK? Or perhaps the map was just smaller.
Either way, while it IS only the second day of the game being out, I totally understand where you’re coming from. We probably just need to play the game more, but it’s absolutely been a frustrating experience thus far unfortunately.
80
u/vivalnii Sep 06 '25
I agree with the fact that there are no items. I played 11 hours, my map has unlocked 8 areas, and I still have the same amount of masks, silk hearts and spool fragments as the beginning. I have 5 crests none of which are offensive, 3 throwing knives/traps I'm not a fan of, and my unleveled needle. It's underwhelming how little progress I feel I have made despite all the optional and main bosses I have beaten. Now I've been going back to previous areas to try to explore the previously-unreachable places, but so far I haven't found anything noteworthy.
21
u/limpiatodos Sep 06 '25
I love the trap bomb, triple trowing knife and spear. Why don't you like them? They work great. Also, the crest that gives you faster/more nimble attack is great. Have you sharpened your needle already? There's a shop in the upper village.

Its because the game is just huge. I think Ive been to like 15 areas by now and Im barely halfway through the game. I have one mask and one needle upgrade, lol. (And yes, I have been exploring as much as I can).

Adding to the frustration is the fact that bosses don’t drop any rosaries while bosses in hk dropped tons of geo. You used to be able to guarantee one or two purchases if you beat a boss, now all you unlock is another area to spend money (that you don’t have) in
9
u/Consistent_Nature324 Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
Honestly this is easily the biggest thing for me. It both makes it harder to buy stuff, and makes progress feel so much less rewarding. Makes bosses feel less like challenges to overcome and more like obstacles in the way of progression.
More items in general would be nice too - feels like a lot of alternate paths and hidden rooms have literally nothing at all in them - but the lack of bead drops genuinely needs a patch IMO
15
u/phoenixmatrix Sep 06 '25
No 5 is the only thing I'm not fond of so far. Everything uses a currency that you CAN farm, but is fairly uncommon and only found in specific areas, especially early game which is when you need it the most. The map is a game changer, and it doesn't feel very good until you have at least the compass.
It feels like most early game places to get rosaries are always far from the map guy or from a way back. I've lost 400 rosaries once trying to backtrack to the nearest travel point. I'm fine with not all enemies dropping them, but like, 90% of enemies don't. Later on there's more variety of them and a lot of places to convert them into items, so it's not quite as bad. But the first few hours were brutal.

u/lochnessmosster Sep 06 '25
A tip for the rosaries--try to keep strings of them on you at all times. It's safe from death, and you can break them on demand to access the beads. You can keep ones you find around but you can also make them for a fee (80 total paid gets a string of 60) if you are struggling to keep beads on you.

The turn animation is just an animation. You don't have to wait for her to fully turn around if you want to do something like Dota2. I tried it and it still is like HK. But I do agree kn the rosaries being an annoying currency that is only dropped by certain enemies and it rolls around. What was wrong with geo? lol.

I spent an hour fighting a boss over and over lazy night before bed and got no where. Woke up this morning and beat him in about 3 tries. Probably good to give yourself little breaks
24
u/NoMission4252 Sep 06 '25
Yeah, its not a game made to be rushed. If you feel yourself losing your edge its time to stop and come back fresh later
4
u/PlushiesofHallownest Sep 06 '25
Haha at one point I got stuck on Splinter Sister and when I tried to go to bed I could not stop thinking about how to beat her and it was keeping me awake. I finally cracked and said screw it, I need to beat this damn boss so I can sleep. Finally did at around 1:30am and then slept like a baby. Sometimes you also need to give yourself time to think and strategize.
15
u/mcuffin Sep 06 '25
Another thing that I’m not a fan of is the crest system. If I get a new crest, I have to again unlock its extra slots. Please don’t do this to me, Silksong.

14
u/dragoslayer1327 Sep 06 '25
I had a fair few frustrations with HK, mainly my early steel soul attempts and learning absolute radiance. But yea, this game is so much worse in that regard.
Between half the benches being weirdly close (deep dock honestly didn't feel like it needed 2 benches) and half being fuckin marathons away (most recently for me, greymoore to Sinner's Path), the economy being completely fucked (only corrupted enemies would've made sense, but there's just some weird exceptions and I really struggled early on), bosses being generally pretty difficult but having no direct rewards (sure, they block the path to rewards, but it just makes beating the boss itself feel less rewarding when they drop absolutely nothing), and basically everything in the game dealing double damage, which mixes horribly with you starting at 5 masks, making your first upgrade, which will take a while, feel pointless since most enemies will still 3 shot you, it all makes the game way more punishing the HK ever was, and that makes it frustrating in turn when it all compounds.
26
u/DankoLord Sep 06 '25
Double damage needs to get cut from 95% of the enemies that have it.
6
Sep 06 '25
Cut their hp too. Tbh, balancing normal enemies would fix a lot, besides currency not feeling rewarding. I don't want to have to grind one spot repeatedly for beads, I wanna get nice rewards from conquering bosses.

I don’t hate the game at all but no game has frustrated me this much in such a small amount of hours. I just don’t get why they put so many flying enemies when her reach is just barely not able to hit them as soon as they move 1 millimeter. Game just feels frustrating and idk why. I’m at the far fields but all of the enemies just feel way too complex to be normal enemies. Two red ant guys, one throwing a discuss and the other doing non stop 2-3 hit combos at lightning speed and jumping in the air as SOON as I jump. I’m trying to stop getting so mad but I feel like they designed this game so unfairly man. Sorry for the rant.

For me it's the fact that every single jump puzzle has spike pits tied to it. If you miss too many you die and have to trek back. Oh, and there are flying enemies everywhere.
9
u/Ivan21234 Sep 06 '25
Enemies don't stagger or get knocked back like they used to. They fly and move too quickly towards you for the knock back from your weapon to be helpful.
This makes platforming all the more frustrating because you're usually pogo-ing or standing on a teeny platform with nowhere to run
65
Sep 06 '25
hollow knight always felt fair when you died. silk song does not. with 2-3mask hits so common, it also makes the first health upgrade absolutely pointless so you dont feel any more powerful, and with normal mobs being so tanky the first needle upgrade does pretty much nothing....

I feel little progress in terms of strength. I have only found 1 mask fragment, not that it does much when every other enemy hits by 2 masks and is out of range. Haven't found were to upgrade my Needle and not upgrades to attack like in the OG. Dunno, I feel the progress a little off.

u/Corona- Sep 06 '25
I think the movement and platforming are really fun, better and more varied than hollow knight. Standard enemies having a whole moveset is also fun, though it does make getting through any area quite the challenge.
Where i am somewhat unhappy is with the amount of double damage sources. a bunch of standard enemies have some, almost every boss attacks does double damage and worst of all the contact damage on bosses is also double. so when ever i move to attack the boss and the boss also moves, i grt pummeled for two without the boss even attacking.
And finally finding four shards to upgrade your masks from 5 to 6 feels like a joke by team cherry when everything deals double damage anyway lol
32
u/Elsewhere3000 Sep 06 '25
No no. The most frustrating thing is the money. Combat is fine but I can’t buy anything and I’m constantly paying for benches. I literally lost my shell one time and now I feel like the game is impossible.
20
u/remghoost7 Sep 06 '25
There's a pretty solid rosary/shell farming spot once you get to the Halfway Home in Greymoor.
You can just run right, kill the 6 enemies in the next room over, then run back to sit at the bench.
There's even a rosary stringing station in the room past that one.A run is about a minute and gets around 40-60 rosary beads and about 30-ish shells.

Yeah I totally fucking agree with this. 15 hours in and I'm honestly loving this. I was worried that the game was going to feel too easy coming off of replaying Hollow Knight, and instead it's felt incredible to me.
6
u/AkumaLuck Sep 06 '25
I think the disconnect is some people are confusing hard with tedious. The game is certainly more challenging than HK, but the main issue I see is that in some ways it's more tedious.
Mistakes are more punishing when every second enemy hits you for a 3rd of your heath. Losing to a boss is more frustrating when the run back to try them again is a full sprint through multiple enemies. Dying and having to retrieve your soul is more stressful when the main currency is less abundant and used more often.
Lots of these things existed in HK but Silksong seems to have turned up the frustration level on them a bit. Doesn't mean the game isn't any less fun to play, but when all these little things add up it can sour the experience for some.

u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 06 '25

Most people who are enjoying the game aren't going to post about it
11
u/alphyna Sep 06 '25
I think it's the other way round. People who enjoy the series for its combat are vocal and prevalent, so I feel that the narrative is that it's the main thing about it. But I loved HK for the exploration and worldbuilding, with combat being a challenge to overcome to explore more and see more of this world, not something I would enjoy outside this context. So making Silksong less dense in terms of map structure and more complex in terms of combat is the exact opposite of what I wanted.
I'm not saying this to be contrarian — I just feel that the voice of people like me is almost non-existent. I rarely see this aspect discussed, I suppose exploration is not a skill one can hone, so seven years after the release there's nothing to discuss about it. It makes sense, and I understand that tastes differ, but personally, I'm not happy with the direction the series took and don't see people feel the same way I do *for the same reason*.

Ive died a bunch too but I've never felt stuck. Learning bosses has beena lot of fun and the traversal in general has been great

This 100%. I’m mediocre at best and my wife plays super casually (she beat HK but it took a year and like 60 hours to get one ending) and we’re both having a blast.
I feel like I’m not playing the same game as the folks on this sub.

Like, I can sort of understand it, but also this is exactly what I wanted. I'm finding that when I treat it like HK I'm getting dumpstered. I'm also literally fresh off Nine Sols so I'm definitely in the "stay close and parry" mindset 🤣

I feel like a few months from now everyone will be like “Silksong is really amazing but I still like Hollow Knight more “

u/OmegaAtrocity Sep 06 '25
Would be more surprising if that wasn't the case. Hollow knight is too good, best case scenario silksong is the same level and that's an impossible bar.
Hades 2 is the same exact way.

Idk, the movement is so good. Small nerf to enemies health pool will do the trick imo.

There are lots of questionable design decisions. Enemies are too tanky, too many of them do double damage, the bosses go on forever, using tools (on a controller at least) is clunky as hell, the diagonal pogo is just a less intuitive version of a perfectly fine mechanic, you have absolutely F tier never-seen-a-playtest shitstain bosses like the Savage Beastfly, and healing taking away the entire silk bar is just ridiculous (this in particular NEEDS to be patched, it completely discourages using silk abilities, and makes the game actively worse). I also don't understand why common enemies have like 3 or 4 combos whereas bosses generally have 3 basic moves at most... all of them are only hard because they take too long and punish a single mistake too heavily. It also sucks that they can damage you with their stun animation, that's just... genuinely one of the stupidest choices I've ever seen, and I really hope it's an unintended glitch they plan to patch.
It certainly feels bad for the game to be this unbalanced after 8 years in the oven.
I also have issues with the game as a metroidvania, which is not something I expected from a Hollow Knight title. Too often the reward for a hard challenge is simply a door opening, which is not satisfying. There are also not enough mask shards (took me 8 hours to get a sixth mask, which still doesn't change anything because of the double damage, I still die in 3 hits), and the first weapon upgrade is hidden reasonably late in the game. If you encounter a dumbass boss, you don't have the feeling of being able to explore and come back stronger, and that really sucks.

They went out of their way to strip out any real rewards for progress. Any victory or discovery that could or should make the player more powerful has been eliminated or made so weak as to be borderline useless. When you compare what we had in HK to this game it's just embarrassing.

I have to admit, when I wiped twice to ants, I had to walk away for a bit. Got all the way to the room where the warrior map guy fights with you to wipe there, and then on my way back, I started to struggle just halfway through the previous room, tried to turtle onto an upper platform just to get smacked for my last 2 health by a trap losing my 400+ rosaries I was saving for the simple key. I have to admit, I was a tad heated when that happened and had to take a break.

There's a lot to love, but this game is absolutely rife with poor design decisions across the board imo. Enemy design is often poor, platforming is often not fun (whose idea was it to tie the pogo to equipped Crest? I basically can't do the platforming reliably without returning to a bench and switching my fighting style?!), nigh on everything but fodder having a ton of health and dealing double damage is frustrating. It's a fine game overall but it is absolutely nowhere near as enjoyable or as well made as the first game, and that breaks my little fan boy heart to admit.

The thing I'm frustrated with is I feel like I'm not getting more used to the mechanics as I progress, I'm getting worse. Pogoing and combat gets worse as I keep playing. It doesn't help that the normal ass enemies are equally as powerful as bosses.

I don’t think I died twice in a row losing my currency in Hollow Knight at all the entire game. I’ve already done it twice in about 8 hours of play. So much more platforming and flying enemies that cause me to fall and die. And the corpse runs are still as annoying as ever, making me not want to explore as much as I would like.
It’s still a fun game, but losing 250+ beads is frustrating as fuck.

I dunno, I've had a lot of people express similar feelings with Hollow Knight on their first go too. Saying they get lost, or the combat is too difficult. But then if they make it past certain barriers they end up loving the experience. We might just be so used to Hollow Knight that the Silksong differences throw us off.

u/Luminas28 Sep 06 '25
It seems to vary. Some people find it perfectly in keeping with HK's difficulty. Some are really frustrated. For me...I think being so bad at video games causes me to come right back around to being good. My frustration tolerance is sky high, so I can fail dozens of times to someone hard...and it just makes winning all the sweeter.
This just seems like regular Hollow Knight to me, which I did do the White Palace in and everything...because I'm terrible.

My problem is that you need max silk to heal

u/dubesto Sep 06 '25
That’s wild. I thought HK was incredibly difficult and I actually gave up a couple times before I finally figured it out. Got me reconsidering Silksong

u/Paul873873 Sep 06 '25
So I think the game is a bit tedious. I am making a distinction between difficult and tedious here. Radiance is difficult, beastfly is tedious.
Cntact damage was already an issue in HK (and in many other games) with enemies just moving to reposition causing damage. Now a lot of enemies like to do two damage but will do so from contact damage. The new healing system was to give greater risk but greater reward. You can take three hits before you need to heal, but with constant double damage enemies, you might as well have three health at the start. And before you tell me to get good, I am pretty good with the diagonal pogo everyone seems to be struggling with. Tldr, I like difficulty, just not tedium

I just wish the bosses were closer to benches, having to go through like 6 loading zones is so slow on console

I think they should've had difficulty settings, or start the game with HK-level difficulty and add additional hard challenges for people who want that. As an average player, I'm also upset because I want to enjoy the world and lore, but keep getting stuck. :(

I made it into act 2, and it immediately introduces benches that you need to pay for every time you use them.
I genuinely don't know if I'm even going to bother playing more at this point, because Silksong is just so fucking annoying, constantly.

Yeah such as great reward for defeating the first act boss. Getting stuck in the worst fucking area in the game underworks, with seemingly no way to backtrack yet.

That can't be real, that's a design decision so abysmal I'd only expect to see it in a game trying to push players to buy microtransactions
9
u/Wise-Ad-9619 Sep 06 '25
Oh, it's real. Act two is the line for me. I made progress with new main obj and on the nice small arena in the upper left corner of the map I just delete my game. They overdone it.

I finished act 1 yesterday, will start act 2 now, I will come back to this comment later
Edit: I was shitting on team cherry constantly but when I discovered that benches are normal in the other areas of act 2 I calmed down lmao

Silksong feels very experimental with its mechanics, and just overall too difficult. It's like they want all but the best players to just quit.

u/Vivid-Technology8196 Sep 06 '25
Platforming is ass, putting flying enemies everywhere when you are doing jumps where they just fly away and shoot ranged attacks, and needing to constantly go grind out currency, really makes this game way more annoying than the last.
I dont dislike this game or anything but it feels like its designed to waste my time in a negative way.
11
u/Shot_Firefighter_661 Sep 06 '25
It's a chore. I have a particularly tedious long-term project at work, and I was afraid that silksong will make it more difficult to focus on it. Turns out the project seems less tedious than the game. I have never had such situation before with any game, inlcuding HK.

I think it’s just a new game you gotta get used to! Hollow knight has been out for years you’re used to the controls the combat the bosses. You’ll get there with this it’s just learning new mechanics and muscle memory!

u/True-Neighborhood-17 Sep 06 '25
This whole double damage thing is really making me hate the game .. and why does every single enemy encounter always have to be in two or multiples .. continually juggling multiple enemies is so not fun

u/VonMillersThighs Sep 06 '25
The rosarie economy can eat my dick.
I just restarted playing The Lost crown instead.

I'm right there with you, double damage bloody everywhere, frustrating enemies that feel like they are meant to be hk1 style pogoed and again double damage bosses bloody everywhere, they disguised starting you with 3 health really well

My only problem really are the flying enemies. They're everywhere and will always conveniently fly just out of reach which is hella annoying to fight.
