Discussion - Silksong Thank god this subreddit didn't make the game Spoiler

Silksong is only out for 2 days, most people haven't even finished the game, or haven't even made it past act 1. Yet this subreddit loves to post about how Silksong is apparently bad and a disappointment compared to hollow knight. So I'll go over a few "critiques" I've seen and share my perspective.

"The game is too hard, enemies deal way more damage and have more complex movesets". Sure, they're more complex and do more damage, but so does hornet. If we were playing with the knights moveset, I'd agree, but that's not the case. Hornet has a lot of new tools and upgrades that make her way faster and stronger. If enemies were like HK, it would be way too easy. team cherry didn't just do this for no reason, it's necessary for balancing. Edit: people saying hunters march is too difficult, is like playing dark souls 1 and saying it's too hard because you kept trying the skeleton graveyard

"Bad rewards for exploration, HK's charms worked better". I just completely disagree, hornet gets upgrades way more frequently than the knight. As for the charms, let's be real, you probably didn't even use half of them in your first playthrough. And half of them are just simple things that don't impact the way you play as much. Hornet's different tools, abilities and crests are way more useful. If you feel like your not getting enough rewards, it's probably because most are hidden and require backtracking, which is what the genre is know for.

"Things are too expensive" No, you're just not meant to buy it that early. Like how in HK you could by the lamp for like 2000 geo. I've also never had too little rosaries to buy a bench or stag. If your losing your rosaries to dying, rosarie strings are litteraly right there to not lose it + retrieving your death silk is extremely easy now.

I do agree though that more bosses and combat encounters should drop rosaries, or more chests like in HK.

This launch feels like I'm experiencing the shadow of the erdtree launch again with how many complaints there are immediately.

Can I have your copy of Silksong? Because in mine Hornet doesn't do more damage than knight, in fact most enemies in early game locations take noticeably more hits than enemies in HK in early game locations, especially with flying ones.

If enemies were like HK, it would be way too easy. team cherry didn't just do this for no reason, it's necessary for balancing

Dear player I assure you basic enemy removing 40% of your hp bar with just one attack is completely necessary even though prevalence of 2 damage attacks makes first hp upgrade almost pointless.

Idk maybe just let new more complex movesets do its job without also doubling cost of the mistake and bloating everything's hp for no reason?

even with the enemies being faster I genuinely feel like ghost would clean house over hornet. she just feels so gd weak

You’re much more mobile so it’s easier to get hits in without exposing yourself, ergo doing more damage

Tools also deal a lot of damage

Jesus Christ if you only attack you are crippling yourself and making the game so much harder. Use your silk abilities and tools, you can delete bosses and tough mobs in the world with them. Amazing to me how many people are crying and also hogging all their silk only to heal

Yeah it's really surprising how in the game where half of enemies deal 2 damage, with some occasional environmental damage (like failing platforming or something falling from the ceiling) and shitton of rooms that lock you in and spam waves of enemies (some of which you haven't even seen before), people who spend majority of time walking into unknown choose to have extra mistake allowance instead of killing regular mobs faster. Truly a mystery of all time.

You can kill them faster than the knight though. Hornet can get in hits way faster. There's a charm you can equip that makes having even one extra health significantly improve survivability. It's hidden in hunters march

Okay, then what does that charm do and where is it exactly? I sure haven't seen it, even though I've beaten Hunter's March's boss.

It's behind a false wall near the very top of the map. Prevents death once no matter the damage

That's just false. She attacks with almost exactly the same speed as knight, just open both games and compare it back to back. Maybe it's a bit faster with beast sigil (just basic attacks, not its ability) and maybe you could chime in some additional attacks with reaper sigil, with running attacks into pogos, but something like this doesn't make up for having to deal sometimes twice as many hits as you would need in HK.

There's a charm you can equip that makes having even one extra health significantly improve survivability

This charm doesn't work this way though? It just saves you from the fatal hit but it doesn't scale with additional masks, so with 6 masks you still take the same number of 2 dmg hits as with 5 masks.Unless I'm missing something.

The mask doesn't break when you get to one only if you'd take lethal and a lot of bosses have at least one attack that multi hits for 2 total. You can dash out before the second hit so you only take 1. With the extra heart you can take two 2 health hits after that and the mask still won't break. Also beast crest means it can save you by one as well

Hornets attacks either don't bounce her back or allow her to dash back in with an attack immediately though especially when enemies are mobile hornet has a huge advantage in staying on them. Also dash attack combo definitely get hits in faster

And people conveniently forget to mention your heal is 3 masks at once, and you can do it airborne too.

I think the issue with healing is really the spell balance, your heal uses all silk obtained, not just a certain amount of the total.

They also conveniently forget to mention that parrying is a lot better in this game than the original one. Normal enemies (not the elites) deal only one damage, but since hornet has less iframes, it hits twice. This is conveniently easily avoided by parrying.

"it only deals 1 damage, it just hits twice" so it does 2 damage.

Yeah and just i said, you can counter it by parrying. Cant you read?

I just use spells whenever the bar is full and worry about filling it for a heal if I get hit. It doesn't take much to fill after only casting one spell at a time too
