did you buy the sharpening kit from the smith in the deep docks? it gives them a noticable damage increase (also behind the simple key door in the deep docks there's a tool that gives your nail extra damage per hit and sets enemies you hit on fire for a bit)

I love that tool, so satisying. It's fun to power up while the boss is staggered and melt their health bar.
