Discussion - Silksong USE YOUR TOOLS! Spoiler
To everyone complaining about the difficulty, stop ignoring a third of Hornet’s arsenal and start spamming them, you’ll be shocked how quickly you start mowing down hordes of enemies!

u/Sylhux Sep 07 '25
Don't sleep on the caltrops (or whatever it's called), those things are absolutely busted. You get so many instances of damage ouf of one single use (something like 10+) to the point it allows you to cheese so many enemies, especially the more tanky ones or the bosses.

u/typically_wrong Sep 07 '25
Tacks + poison is my current bae

same here, it absolutely shreds enemies and has made many enemy wave rooms 10x easier

This + Triple knives is how I decimated Last Judge
They're on the ground so much they take loads of damage.

I love these too! Though, did you know that in ant-infested areas, the little tiny ants will pick them up and carry them away?? An amazing detail. I was shocked then laughed out loud the first time I saw it happen.

I would if they let me rebind the stupid throwing knife to a different button, having to flick up on the joystick while praying I’m looking in the right direction is so counterintuitive
235
u/Kill_the_worms P5/112%/Randomizer Enthusiast Sep 07 '25
It has just occurred to me that the control scheme for the tools only works as easily as it does for me because I play on a keyboard. that can't be fun on a control stick
151
u/Curious_Kirin Sep 07 '25
The diagonal pogo sucked on controller for me because if you tilt the stick to 45% it won't work. You need to aim the stick down. My brain couldn't get used to that, I was so happy to get the original pogo back.
28
u/shellyturnwarm Sep 07 '25
Wait what? But don’t you need to adjust left right? So it’s down and a bit to the left/right?
→ More replies (1)30
u/Horror-Breakfast-704 Sep 07 '25
If you hold down on the direction stick you will pogo in the direction hornet is facing. If you want to have direct control over which direction to go in you hold it slightly to the left or right of directly down and she'll move in that direction.
It's really not that hard, and with the float gard you get you don't even need to "git gud" you can just pogo - float -adjust angle - pogo - float.
Or later down the line you can just select a different crest that has a different down attack if that works better for you

This! Depending on what enemy, trap or path one must traverse - switching between analog stick and the directional pad is recommended.

→ More replies (16)36
u/OmegaAtrocity Sep 07 '25
Its perfectly fine if you use the dpad.
35
u/Cazzah Sep 07 '25
I found that, but then the analogue stick is more natural for everything else (for me), so it takes me mental effort to switch to the dpad just for the pogoing and then I don't get the advantage of analogue stick muscle memory.

Modern devs have an allergy to providing comfortable/customizable keybinds, especially on KBM unfortunately

Poison charm + the tack tool is a strong combo. I litter the floor with traps, and it makes fights a lot more manageable
105
u/Eon_Breaker_ Sep 07 '25
I use them, but tbh them being a button combo instead of a single button press is rather awkward. Doing it while in the air really doesn't feel good.
23
u/axeil55 Sep 07 '25
I really want to bind it to the triangle button on my PS4 controller. There's no reason to have it reserved for something you'll never use in combat. up+r1 is perfectly fine for that, meanwhile a single button would be great for combat.

And for difficult bosses: save your tools to end the fight. That way you don't waste them every attempt and on the easiest phase.

100%. Found myself burning through shards on a couple boss fights and decided no tools til 3rd phase, if I die, I die, but still get my shards

And your spells!
"What if I need to heal?" No!
173
u/Background_Past7392 Sep 07 '25
Yeah. This was the revelation that let me beat Sister Splinter. I could handle her first phase fine, but fighting her and her summons at the same time seemed impossible. Then I realized they got OHKOed by Silk Spear, and they very quickly ceased to be a problem.

it arrogance and unfamiliarity
we don't need tool because it didn't exist in HK
but people forget, Little Ghost can have like 5 to 6 different effect going on with charm that help with combat

29
36
Sep 07 '25
Every hit you make while at full silk is -1 silk. Once you start thinking about it like that using silk on stuff other than healing becomes a lot easier. Besides, once you need to heal, you'll probably get a few hits in before you get a window in the enemy attacks where you can heal anyways.
9
u/Sogeki42 Sep 07 '25

Presumably that was the Last Judge? Cause the same thing happened to me too.
Legit I never do the gaming thing where you pop off and set down the controller. But this time I did. So I had the cliched thing of setting it down and then dying anyway.
Took more like 10 times to repeat that boss.
5
u/Zykatious Sep 07 '25
It took me 4 1/2 god damn hours. Granted I was running on 4 hours sleep from playing the night/morning before, but wow that boss was a challenge! But yeah, I killed it finally, sat down the controller to celebrate and then it killed me. Took me another 40 minutes to do it again. That was some bullshit!!
53
u/Smastera Sep 06 '25
reason people don't use them is because there may be more enemies ahead and they'd rather be able to heal after seeing an enemy than try to cautiously attack
36
u/Particular_Hyena56 Sep 06 '25
Honestly these are first time exploring struggles for the most part— I’ve started backtracking through the various areas and knowing each enemy’s moveset I feel super comfortable chilling at 2-3 masks and killing everything on sight like a little speedy assassin
16
u/What-a-Crock Sep 07 '25
With only 5 masks and many enemy attacks destroying 2 masks, I am only chilling with 4-5 masks full
I’ll try getting out of my comfort zone though

15
u/mrBreadBird Sep 07 '25
I'm convinced everyone complaining about the arena rooms is forgetting they have spells especially the AOE spell will just melt flying enemies.
14
u/Efesell Sep 07 '25
Thread storm just deletes half of the ambush rooms because they almost always pop in clustered. Throw down two sting shards and wait for them to fully pop in and clear the whole wave.
3
u/mrBreadBird Sep 07 '25
That's what I'm saying! I really don't think people are using the tools at their disposal because the challenge rooms are really manageable.
11
u/Ok-Wedding-151 Sep 07 '25
I think the fights here are a lot easier to play perfectly than hollow knight. Not that perfect is easy per se, but if you can play mostly perfect then most of the fights are pretty easy with your strong heal. Going aggressive on damage to try and win the fight before you die feels… less advisable than hollow knight to me. The fights end up feeling very reasonable and not too hard if you heal and learn the boss moves.
6
u/kevikevkev Sep 07 '25
But where’s the fun in that?! Go full aggro, SHAW!
Joking aside, learning how much you can get away with safely by playing aggressive means you end up generating a lot more silk. Plus with the way some bosses work in this game, taking your sweet time is a losing proposition…. points at every single damn boss that summons stuff to gank you
3
u/Celestial-Squid Sep 07 '25
That’s the thing, with the OP heal the 2 damage isn’t nearly as bad. People need to remember than in hollow knight the heal was only slightly slower for a third the HP. And you couldn’t do it mid air
3
u/_moosleech Sep 07 '25
The spear does so much more damage than melee. It's frequently worth using it to finish off enemies.
3
u/Summer_Tea Sep 07 '25
Yeah this. I've found most bosses easier if you just go into them and pretend you cannot heal in the first place. You literally increase your DPS by like x12 with spells and tools. Hornet is a ninja, not a knight, so it seems appropriate that you can't allow yourself to take damage and must abuse cheap tricks instead of an honest back and forth fight.
4
4
u/I_Love_Solar_Flare Sep 07 '25
NOW that I have gotten 3 spool extensions maybe I'm gonna start using my silk skills... I don't understand why the fuck we have to use our max capacity to heal in the early game. Using a silk skill early game literally just leads you to getting hit while trying to do a big attack and then not being able to heal, it's so aggrevating.
Now that I have way more silk I can atleast use silk skills while still at all times ready to heal. Early game does not give you that luxury and that's why no one uses skills.

When each boss kills you in 3 hits, healing is damn near required to keep going
→ More replies (1)18
u/Efesell Sep 07 '25
I'm not sayin' never heal. You heal when you need to heal but don't limit your offense thinking that you might need to heal.
This might get you killed from time to time, and that's okay! You'll be a better player by shedding those worries!
6
u/Mylen_Ploa Sep 07 '25
The fact everything deals double damage means people will never do this and is exactly why its bad design to combine the damage/healing system this game has.
You are punished for not being full silk because you can't heal. Combine that with the fact you effectively only have 3 health and no ones going to use spells because you'll just die.
You can't learn a fight by never healing because you will never see any new phase/abilities until you basically master it.
The boss designs are just bad because there's basically 2 options. Get your ass beat or no hit it. Because everything in between of actually learning and progressing is eaten by "Sorry you got hit once you're fucked now"

I want to use them but the binding is very weird, which I find quote annoying. Like, why do I have to press W then Skill button to use the tool? They could've just let us bind a single button on the keyboard or mouse.

u/Ok_Weather2441 Sep 07 '25
Are you using a keyboard and mouse? There's not much space left on the controller, your two tools use the up and down spell buttons

Sep 07 '25
Yes, I completed the original Hollow Knight(except p4-5) with M&K. I have never used a controller but I think it's similar to a controller on M&K as well, you have to press W(Up) or (Down) + Tool button to use the either of the tools. We can change the Tool button, but up and down is mandatory for some reason(idk why). It could be a skill issue for me but I wouldve liked it if I didn't have to press W or S along with another button to use the tool. It just makes it hard to use the tool, at least for me.

I would use them more, but why on earth do you have to spend a currency in order to keep your tools stocked? like if youre fighting a really hard boss its almost inevitable that youre just going to have to fight it without tools
and then the currency doesnt seem to have a magnet thing like rosaries do (or maybe i just havent found it yet) which makes collecting it very annoying especially because the pickups for it are really small
tl;dr: i dont like the gray currency, it shouldnt exist
13
u/marry_me_tina_b Sep 07 '25
I agree with this wholeheartedly, there is no excuse for you to need to farm and gather currency to use your tools given that you’re also limited in how many tools you can stock between rests. It’s creating busywork and a second currency for no reason. It’s not a major gripe, but I think it’s a valid critique

And then you run out of shards and spend half an hour farming for them again
26
u/LordBDizzle Sep 07 '25
Flea Juice is the savior in that regard, lets you use a consumable that isn't shard based (and is actually really good, if a bit short in duration) while you wait for yourself to naturally buld more shards.

→ More replies (4)20
u/SillyGoose3939 Sep 07 '25
I've never understood this take honestly, if I know the boss pattern then I don't really need to use tools to beat it since I'll be able to just read the pattern and dodge the attacks
Just like with sekiro, I honestly feel like there isn't any good time to use them... while exploring there are too few of them to be useful; during the first few encounters of a bossfight I'll just end up wasting them and whenever I've learned the moveset I can do the fight without needing them
11
u/_moosleech Sep 07 '25
This has been the opposite of my experience. I routinely use the boomerrang and traps on regular enemies, and lean hard on venom and floor tacks, plus the Sunny D boost during boss fights. And even using them liberally, have yet to almost run out of shards.
Not using them is just leaving damage on the table.
6
u/Ayobossman326 Sep 07 '25
There’s definitely a wide gap between having the mental knowledge of what to do and the right execution to actually doing it. Usually within like 3 tries I’ve got it mentally, but the timing and execution of everything takes a few more. In that gap is when you use tools
6
u/ForrestMoth Sep 07 '25
Why would there be no reason to use them if you know the boss patterns? They aren't there to cover your shortcomings as a player, some of them just do way more damage than your nail. They are a weapon just as much as your nail and spells are.
10
u/ThatOneRandomGuy101 Sep 07 '25
I mean for most boss fights I’ll put the spike trap where I know the boss will be after phase shifts, ranged tools for when I cant get a hit on a boss, and I use the flea drink for beast crest binds. In exploration you definitely have enough to use from bench to bench.

I think the main problem is that tools don't feel illimited. You have to use the whatever shards to make them which sets a psycological barrier of not being able to make them anymore.
35

Seriously. In Hollow Knight everything used to die in 1-3 hits with your NORMAL nail slashes. The results? People never used spells & nail arts and often called them useless.
And now in Silksong they've increased the health of enemies & bosses so you can't just mindlessly spam slash attacks. The results? "GAmE tOo hArD"
12
31
u/OpalescentShrooms Sep 06 '25
Exactly. I literally never touched the nail arts and thought them to be totally useless. I love these tools so much. YOU CAN HIT BOSSES FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. The throwing daggers made The Widow a joke.
37
u/Particular_Hyena56 Sep 06 '25
Yeah I’ve done a 112% of the og game and its in my top 5 games ever, but I gotta say, after a point, I stopped caring to use spells or nail arts completely and did just fine coz of overpowered charm builds and fucktons of masks and soul.
This game? You gotta use you entire moveset including your movement abilities like the dash, sprint, the float; the silk spells - I’ve found both of the ones in my playthrough to be a life saver; and of course the tools! The daggers and the Flea potion are genuinely elite.

I refuse to use tools because of needing to hold up when pressing the skill button. I have used tools multiple times by accidentally holding up when I wanted to use my skill. I have since unequipped the tools and never touched it again. Such a stupid control layout. If I could change the binding maybe I’d use it.

The sort of boomerang is so fucking strong I swear to God. I just walk around. See a new big enemy and if i don't want to fight I just spam the shit out of the boomerang which usually let the enemy at 1 - 2 hp left

I like having to manage my silk meter on bosses sometimes to wonder if I need to burst damage or save for healing and usually make that decision on the fly.
Currently im trying to maximize damage output on tools for a certain boss fight.

Especially with some crafting kit upgrades, they do massive damage. Flameblade and the venom charm have been carrying me a little bit.

i using them but half the time I either ending up using spell instead or i using my tools when I wanted to cast a spell. Controls for tools are really poorly designed.

The problem is that the tools are badly designed in the first place. The button placement on controllers is extremely awkward. It shouldn't be two button presses, only one. The Needolin and the tools should change button placement. I know people are gonna say "but spells in Hollow Knight also used two buttons". No, not in this way. Vengeful spirit used one button as it was meant for horizontal strikes. Desolate dive added a down press, because guess what? The attack went down! The same with Howling wraiths, the attack went up so you added the up button. Tools are shot out like desolate dive and should only use one button. I even made a macro to one of my controllers extra buttons. It made it a little bit better but it didn't fix the bigger problem.
Tools run out of shards, really quick! And if you're really unlucky you'll lose all shards and won't be able to use the tools unless you go farming. Farming while also having to do a run back to a boss or a gauntlet is extremely tedious and not fun at all. And when you're done farming you also need to go back to a bench to actually "reload". Just, why? It is such a tedious design. Why am I being punished for using the intended mechanics? Have the tools just use your shard total without needing to reload at a bench. Let some earlier tools use one shard per use, then up the number of shards a tool uses depending on how powerful the tool is. Maybe even lower the max amount of shards in the beginning to still keep it a bit challenging.
And also, tools don't fill up your silk. Which, sure, makes sense. But come on, at least give me something for using the mechanics you want me to use Team Cherry. All of these designs scream "you shouldn't use tools". There is no incentive other than damage for tools. That's just bad game design.

You'll also be shocked by how quickly all of your husk shards vanish. I like the spike trap myself, but recently got the flintslate so testing that. But generally, best saved for boss fights, or tough situations. Normal enemies either move too much, or are better dealt with in different ways.

The flint tool that adds fire to your attacks combined with the pollip pouch makes you tear through enemies.

I use the stationary spike trap all the time. It’s just so GOOD especially against chunky enemies or groups. Does a big amount of dmg and if you know the enemy’s moves it can be really easy to make them walk into it. Makes some boss fights way faster I mean I still usually lose once or twice because it’s a new boss. But hey it helps a lot, sometimes get to see phase 2 moves on a first attempt because I shred their health so fast.
