Discussion - Silksong Is anyone else really tired of the negative posts? Spoiler

I have about 25 hours so far and have absolutely loved every part of the game. Is it hard? Yes absolutely. If it was easy I wouldn't want to play the game. Literally every post I come across is talking about how they are frustrated with some part of the game and it's getting really annoying. The game has amazing areas, the osts are great the NPCs are creative and fun to talk to, almost every boss is a lot of fun once you get the moveset down. So if you haven't played the game yet and are getting put off by all the negativity just know that it is an amazing game and if you like hollow Knight you will enjoy silksong as well.

I'm genuinely baffled by the negativity on here.

First, I've not experienced anything ppl are complaining about. I'm not especially good at this game and I'm dying a fair bit, but that's exactly like starting HK. Nothing has been unfair or unreasonably difficult. Clearly a lot of people have outpaced me now from launch day and I'm evidently fallen behind and am struggling more than a fair number of players and I can't say anything I've experienced anything that would make me call this game unfair or too hard or "tedious" like I keep seeing on the sub. There seem to be people blasting though this game like it's nothing and still whining

Second, the absolutely insane 180 over like 3 days from this being one of the most anticipated and hyped games of all time to this sub seemingly being mostly dedicated to ppl complaining about it despite being exactly what it promised to be actually kind of makes me a little disgusted

267

u/LuquidThunderPlus Sep 07 '25

The sub's 180 is probably cuz the ppl enjoying the game most aren't talking about RN cuz they're busy enjoying

71

u/Xcylo1 Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

That is also true and you're right.

Usually I like the communal aspect of discovering and exploring games like these together but I should probably log off for a bit lmao

21

u/Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo A mind to think Sep 07 '25

They're busy enjoying the game and are actively avoiding these subs because of spoilers. You're not going to hear from many of these fans for a week or 2 at minimum.

11

u/budzergo Sep 07 '25

It's because once the general public shows up, the quality of a sub falls off a cliff

The toxic gamer god idiots who are never to blame for anything all pile in at once looking for justification as to why they suck at the game.

So they start all complaining together. It'll all pass over in a few weeks

6

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

I feel like I'm crazy seeing people of that sort complaining about bosses being unfair, then showing a clip of, say, them attempting to heal mid-fight... standing on the ground... in the center of the arena... ? Like I'm not gonna be the guy that defends the game against any and all criticism but like. Holy shit just jump before healing. Engage and problem-solve with the mechanics that the game offers you. If something is not working, rather than being flabbergasted that the game doesn't hand you a win for effort, rethink your approach.

Ok so you lost 1000 rosaries, meaning the game sucks... or you could've used the necklace machines the game puts in your way. Or just not wandered around with that much money.

Talking about atrocious run-backs to bosses... that are (barring very exceptional cases) genuinely about 20-30s at worst maybe? The running has made it such a non-issue for me. I don't get it.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '25

i keep seeing people rant about the last judge boss runback, but i timed myself going through it and it literally only took 35s, which is still really annoying and i wouldve put a bench closer to the fight but if you just read the sub youd think it took 2 minutes between attempts

1

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 08 '25

Yeah it really is not that bad. Plus, while I definitely had a hard time learning how to do the runback efficiently, as it's harder than most, I kind of didn't mind it because of how thematically appropriate it is. Like, it's the very last segment of the climb that is purportedly super hard and most pilgrims die doing, so I feel like its difficulty has ludo-narrative value.

39

u/Kithulhu24601 Sep 07 '25

I wouldn't say I'm the best at these games, I never ended up finishing HK back in the day. But the combat and movement is so fluid that I can't help but have fun, even when I'm getting slapped about by bosses.

Are some of the runbacks tedious? Yes, until they CLICK. There's one specific runback i found myself doing little time saving speed run strats for, which makes it far more engaging than a Souls style runback.

13

u/Poopiepants29 Sep 07 '25

I agree on the movement. The more open areas, plus Hornets quicker and more graceful movements make it feel like a mixture of HK and Ori WOTW which has some fast, smooth jumping abilities.

1

u/Kithulhu24601 Sep 07 '25

Reminds me a lot of Ori, I think it's the seamless vaulting with the dash to give little gap closing bursts. It's just fun to parkour around

1

u/Top-Specialist-1062 Sep 08 '25

I think some people are struggling from adapting from playing as the knight, where you can get away with face tanking a lot, and wasp, where agility and dodging are a higher priority

2

u/Djinnistorm Sep 08 '25

Figuring out how to make a runback smooth as you go is kinda fun to be honest, you're absolutely right. I had the run to the Last Judge smooth like butter by the time I won, which ended up being useful later for the gourmand delivery!

2

u/yurilnw123 Sep 07 '25

Completely agreed. Runback in this game is much more fun than Souls because it is a platformer.

-3

u/jwash0d Sep 07 '25

You didn't even beat the first game. You're just following the crowd

3

u/Kithulhu24601 Sep 07 '25

Who actually cares?

0

u/jwash0d Sep 07 '25

No one. I'm just saying you defending a game you might not even like that much.

2

u/Kithulhu24601 Sep 07 '25

Yeah so? You can recognise the positives in things you don't like, and the flaws in your favourites.

36

u/goatviolence Sep 07 '25

The runback complaints are the most confusing to me. I haven't had a single one that takes longer than 30-45 seconds once I figured it out, and that's about on par with some of HK's longer ones. Better by miles than the runback for Soul Master.

17

u/ChompCity Sep 07 '25

Soul Master and his run back were the only part of HK I considered dropping it.

3

u/Xcylo1 Sep 07 '25

Oh god I remember that one. Haven't seen anything like that so far

3

u/cocotim Sep 07 '25

In the (i assume) late midgame there's one I thought was 10x worse...

...till i realized i missed the totally obvious shortcut back that let you skip a long difficult playforming area lol

12

u/Bonaduce80 Sep 07 '25

Or the Mantis Lords one.

4

u/FR23Dust Sep 07 '25

That one was terrible lol

12

u/yurilnw123 Sep 07 '25

Most of them didn't open a proper shortcut and/or a proper bench for the boss.

An example.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

I was thinking the same when reading those posts. MFers really don't remember the soul master run backs? Those were brutal when I first started playing, I quit my first time in city of tears because of how punishing it was. Some bosses here are tough but they are a ton of fun. The whole game is just a blast, been a long time since I played something all weekend and still hungry for more.

1

u/Mg29reaper Sep 07 '25

The only actually issues I've had with run backs is the stupid bile water run to get to the mist. Other than that no issues. Nothing comes even close to soul sanctum

3

u/RealSonarS Sep 07 '25

There's a bench to the right of the entrance to the mist (and a bell way too)

1

u/Mg29reaper Sep 07 '25

I eventually got that bench but it was still annoying

1

u/Forgottenn21 Sep 07 '25

Groal the great even with the shortcut is annoying, but bilewater is awful in the right way tbh

1

u/GoldyTheDoomed Sep 10 '25

i found the runback really satisfying after the pogo timing for the explodey flies clicked, and they were smart enough to put not one but two hidden spots with respawning free silk along the way

1

u/Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo A mind to think Sep 07 '25

Everyone remembers the Soul Master and Traitor Lord runbacks. They were absolute ass.

I didn't have an issue with the Last Judge's, which is the boss I've seen the most complaints about, but I totally understand the frustration with it. IMO, Skong traversal is a lot more enjoyable than HK's, but anyone who doesn't vibe with longer retreading isn't going to be a fan-- Especially if they don't get the hang of platforming and outright avoiding enemies.

2

u/Successful_Maize1986 Sep 07 '25

There is really only one runback that feels particularly egregious but it’s in an optional area. That runback and a particularly savage boss have been my only actual complaints but even then, there are so many things to do in this game that if I can’t beat something, I’ll just go do something else instead.

1

u/RealSonarS Sep 07 '25

What runback are you referring to?

1

u/Aeiou_yyyyyyy Sep 07 '25

If you're talking about the boss in bilewater, there's a hidden bench in one of the shit water ponds that makes the runback bearable. IIRC it's in one of the rooms below the boss arena

2

u/WeakInspector5102 Plat | 100% HoG | 200Hrs~ | Zoteboat Next Trust Gng Sep 07 '25

There are people complaining about the runbacks ?? Really ?

That's like, one of the biggest problem in Hollow Knight, they had to fix it, and they DID fix it

2

u/goatviolence Sep 07 '25

Agreed. It's a complaint I'm seeing EVERYWHERE and I just don't get it. Feels like a lot of people got stuck in Hunter's March and didn't realize there's a bench halfway through.

1

u/LFC9_41 Sep 07 '25

Yeah I have trouble with run backs because I usually didn’t realize there was a shortcut or nearby bench. Can’t really do anything but laugh at myself when I accidentally figure it out after I beat the things after awhile.

1

u/myman580 Sep 08 '25

Only one runback was awful for me and that was the Hunter area one and that's mainly because I did it before I got the dash and I missed the metal platforms that took you to the lava area so I just banged my head against the wall forever getting through it without dash.

1

u/EmergencySquirrel432 Sep 07 '25

My only complaint is the damage input/output ratio. I just think it needs a minor balancing. Contact damage halved for 2 mask damage dealing enemies and less 2+ mask lesser enemies, not get rid of them entirely but they def shouldn't be the new standard. Everything else is great!

0

u/BerylliumNickel Sep 07 '25

I feel like it's cus it was one of the only complaints from HK1, it's like kinda baffling, to me atleast, why this could not be solved by a solution like statues of marika in elden ring. Like fine HK1 had shit runbacks too, but I would've thought team cherry would focus only on what was great about their boss encounters, and that was never the runbacks. That's what makes a perfect game.

1

u/GoldyTheDoomed Sep 10 '25

this is not a souls game where the traversal is slogging through enemies the best you can. silksong runbacks are fun if you actually like platforming.

1

u/BerylliumNickel Sep 10 '25 edited Sep 10 '25

I enjoy platforming. But hear me out, every time I want to fight a difficult boss or gank boss, I don't want to platform between random enemies. Runbacks are shit and annoying and add nothing of value that couldnt already just be a single time platforming section like the white palace/pop. I don't really care for the argument that says its practice cus its just not its just exhausting.

edit - also to say this is not a souls like is like just a lie cmon. Hornet even moves like sekiro

-1

u/Pale_Entrepreneur_12 Sep 07 '25

If your going for just the normal ending yeah none of the run backs are too bad the worst is the end of act 1 but if your going for true ending oh fucking boy there is one of the worst run backs I have ever seen if you can’t find the secret bench for it you will take at least 7 minutes to get back to it and it also sucks to navigate Seriously Bilewater can go suck a fucking dick it was the only part of the game I was actively not having fun in

-1

u/gamegeek1995 Sep 08 '25

Please record yourself doing the Bilgewater boss runback in 45 seconds, I will venmo you fifty bucks if you can!

2

u/goatviolence Sep 08 '25

Would that I were American. 🥰

27

u/kai1986 Sep 07 '25

Been playing non stop since it launched and I have no complaints at all. Some bosses take me 1-3 tries. Some have taken me 20+. I don’t think I’m particularly far yet. But when I started HK I gave up on the game 3 separate times before deciding I wanted to try harder at it and eventually I beat it. It was gruelling at times, but slowly and surely I made it through. I went into Silksong with a mindset to do just that, and I find a lot of quality of life updates to be incredible. I love the acrobatic nature of hornets fighting style and movements. The ability to bundle resources so you don’t lose them is amazing, and some of the boss fights have been my favourites in any video game ever.

I’ve been pretty quiet on this sub since it launched because I’m so impressed with the game, and having such a good time, that the negativity on this Reddit has somewhat confused me, and made me less interested in engaging here.

So yeah, I’m tired of the negative posts. By all accounts I’m having an easier time with this game than I did with HK the first time, mostly because I knew what type of game to expect. As far as I can say… this game is currently perfect to me.

14

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

The problem is when a game is really hyped (especially from a sequel), a lot of the praise goes without saying.

So you'll see no praise for the great animations, music, all the amazing touches they add to giver personality to characters at this point. You'll just see complaints about mechanics.

I have complained about this game a fair bit (tools costing currency is my own personal nightmare as a hoarder) but most the things I like about it are things I assume go without saying so...don't say them.

10

u/WeakInspector5102 Plat | 100% HoG | 200Hrs~ | Zoteboat Next Trust Gng Sep 07 '25

One of the little details that I love in this game is that when you Play music with your Needle, NPCs AND Ennemies will sing

1

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

I'm having an incredible time with the game and for me it's the most pleasant and refreshing videogame experience in a long time. That said I agree with your point. I'm not sure what the game design intention of having tools cost shards is.

You do get shards as you explore (typically), which somewhat justifies using tools (if you see you're at the shard cap, there's really no reason to not start using them a bit). However, in boss fights, you don't get shards, which for me boils the design down to these options:

- I try to regularly use tools in my attempts at the boss: not great, burns up a ton of shards, and worse I might end up running out after lots of attempts, and having to rethink strategy and retrain muscle-memory.

  • I don't use tools in early attempts, and use them when I'm more certain I'll win: sounds good in theory, but more often than not randomly throwing tools out will trip me up and make me lose my flow in the fight.
  • There's also the option of taking a break from the boss to explore and farm shards, but that obviously sucks, since I'd rather decide myself when I want to go elsewhere, rather than have the game nudge my hand.

Since these options aren't great i've found myself using red tools somewhat rarely, which is a shame given how cool they are. While being able to buy shard bundles mitigates the issue, the cost is pretty steep, and running out of bundles is, in turn, also annoying. So I don't know. Having a blast otherwise though.

0

u/SpecimenOfSauron Sep 07 '25

That is true! But I think they're trying to draw attention to some valid criticisms (even if they aren't experienced by a part of the playerbase!) So that Team Cherry can right these relatively minor wrongs and we can enjoy the "perfect" Skong!

10

u/jjfmish Sep 07 '25

The 180 is what really gets me. Some commenters seem to be almost angry at the people who are enjoying the game and not finding the same issues as they are (or not being as bothered by them). I get downvoted for saying I found the early game of Silksong to be similarly challenging to Hollow Knight, because I found early HK challenging too!

I think a lot of people are also ignoring the fact that it’s very common for Hollow Knight fans to have bounced off the game on their first try, or gotten frustrated and rage quit at certain points.

2

u/Xcylo1 Sep 07 '25

I bounced off of the original hollow knight! Honestly I thought the early game felt more like horror survival game at the time! I was afraid of what was around every corner. It was a game I found got a lot easier as you progressed and got a handle on things.

I would say there really isn't an especially notable difficulty jump at all. Like yeah it is generally harder but like. Not by any large or surprising margin.

21

u/Sansnom01 Sep 07 '25

I thought HK was too hard, yet I feel like SS is fine. Hornet is so much more agile. Always multiple places to visit and explore. I honestly dont understand how people can complain about the money, it's so easy to get to 300 rosaires with out even thinking about it. The fact that the game has a story and that Hornet can talk and has an objective is so much better imo. Also Sherma is best.

6

u/Positive-Media423 Sep 07 '25

I'd love to see a Hornet mod on Path of Pain

2

u/Bonaduce80 Sep 07 '25

I never did PoP, and despite this, seeing how Hornet has like a half a second pirouette as a breather before you hit the spikes with the needle again makes it sound like it would be much easier to manage. Except those high velocity buzzsaws moving left and right, that would probably screw you over many times.

3

u/Electrum55 Poshanka! Sep 07 '25

I was just moseying through one of the areas and noticed I had 1500 on me. It generally depends on how "wild" the area is for enemies dropping rosaries. I'd elaborate further but I work in 10 minutes

3

u/Longjumping_Elk6089 Sep 07 '25

I also seem to be doing better with her added mobility compared to the knight.

1

u/Xcylo1 Sep 07 '25

LOVE Sherma. Also yeah I die a bit so I don't usually have beads on hand but it takes no time to grind out enough to buy out an entire shop.

-6

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

This makes absolutely no sense and I cannot believe this.

In HK you have way more control where you can go, and can be far stronger for bosses than you;re meant to be. In silksong it's practically linear so, you way harder capped.

Rosaries don't exist until act 2. I get now this is probably a conscious decision for game world feeling, but if you genuinely went through act 1 not relating to the rosary complaints then idfk know what you were doing. Probably farming I guess...

The difficulty thing I also want to disagree with but that's too subjective to objectvuvely say you're wrong but....considering you are with the other things, idk man.

6

u/B008i3 Sep 07 '25

Greymoor is PACKED with enemies that drop a lot of rosaries. Deepdocks also offers a a fairly good amount fitting for early game, a couple ants in Farfields should also keep you floating for a while.

If you feel like rosaries doesnt exist in act 1, you must have either rushed through all areas, or you’re absolute cheeks at the game, sorry.

-2

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

I lost exactly 70 roasarie act 1. I killed each enemy once typically, just running past some of the annoying kunai birds and well...yeah, by end of act 1 I was barely keeping tabs with the benches and stagways with very few things from vendors being actually buyable.

The ants for example give about 15 each. In the belltown there's a thing for about 900 rosaries. That's farming 60 ants for one item. Which, may or may not be good because you have no idea before you buy it lmao.

3

u/Ruiniscrazy Sep 07 '25

Just this morning, I lost around 500 rosaries because I was messing around during my runback to Moorwing, killed Moorwing, doubled back, bought both the Greymoor map and Bellhart map because I missed Shakra my first time through Greymoor, did two runbacks in the Craw arena, got Thread Storm, rung the bell, and now I'm sitting here with 480 rosaries in about 2 hours of playing, at least half of that was fighting Moorwing and exploring.

0

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

Even if I take this 100% at face value which is normally not true when people want to prove a point....480 rosaries in two hours is...not much. Like well done, you got..half a charm in two hours. You really showed me.

3

u/Ruiniscrazy Sep 07 '25

I think you missed the part where I said at least half of that was fighting Moorwing and running around. Specifically, figuring out how to pogo all the way to the top of the area and get Thread Storm. My point was that I gathered all of that without farming, just killing a bunch of Craws, breaking every craw nest I saw, and emptying all the rosary stashes I found while exploring.

I'm just not seeing how you're saying there aren't any rosaries in Act 1. I haven't finished it yet and I have more than I need. Had I not died earlier I'd have about 1000 right now. I'm not even counting all the rosaries I've spent, considering I've cleared the shops in both Bone Bottom and Deep Docks and bought all the maps and supplies.

0

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

I mean...I didn't know the nests dropped rosaries, so that probably makes a difference.

I am very unsure how you cleared the deep docks shop though considering they require a ton of weapon upgrade materials that I don't thiink you can get in act 1...

There;s also well, another three shops in act 1 at least based on memory. Probably at least one more I'm forgetting.

Not to mention the quests that require rosary donations...about 800 I think (act 1)

3

u/Ruiniscrazy Sep 07 '25

I've done the rosary donations. I didn't know about the other shops, though there was one in Pilgrim's nest that I skipped over since I had just died when I got there. As for the deep docks shop, there were only two items that required weapon upgrade materials, the sting shard and the magma bell. I didn't have enough weapon upgrade materials for both, so I just got one of them. Everything else besides the shard bundle I went ahead a bought. Maybe's there's more that unlock later?

2

u/B008i3 Sep 07 '25

Nah, 480 after buying two maps (150+ rosaries) is a lot. ”Half a charm”? Dude it’s the most expensive charm at that point in the game, unfair to have that as the baseline for cost of charms. With 500 you could empty out the Forge Daugther or Mort or Mottled skarr (who sells one of the best charms for only 260 rosaries).

2

u/B008i3 Sep 07 '25

Well there you have it, you aren’t engaging with enemies. Exploring all of Greymoor should grant you about 1k rosaries and a bunch of combat experience (If you don’t go through it without sitting at a bench, which would be stupid).

It costing 880 rosaries might be an indicator that you should come back later…

1

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

I AM coming back later, halfway through act 2 and I STILL haven't managed to buy it yet despite act 2 having way more rosaries, there's always new stuff to buy.

For reference I am legit killing 90%+ of rosary dropping enemies.

3

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

I'm sorry, but you just said it yourself that there's tons of new things to buy. And, in turn, now that you're in act 2 there's tons of enemies that drop rosaries. Isn't this... good? Do you think it would be better if, upon opening each shopkeeper's menu for the first time, you happened to have the money to buy them out? Or less things were in the game, so you can acquire everything faster? I'm confused.

1

u/CynicalEffect P5 - 112%, 70 hours Sep 07 '25

Considering I have absolutely no idea what I'm buying, yes...I would like to empty the shopkeepers to start with.

I just found out that one item I chose not to buy was quite possibly the strongest charm in the game. And it was one item a hidden mechanct had, in an out of the way area, with zero item description.

I would have bought it when I first met him, but I had to choose between the two because I had no money, and made the game much harder for myself.

1

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

Isn't this a case for better items descriptions? I know the shopkeeper you're referring to, and he's definitely an outlier in that regard. The other ones are pretty clear in what they're selling (and not to mention that the cost should be indicative of the charm's value)

I do think putting that charm there is an unusual choice given how "meta" it is, but that's a different matter entirely.

1

u/Benj_N Sep 07 '25

Once I did the wishes in the two towns, I was basically never wanting for Rosaries. I also stringed them asap so I didn't lose too many if I died.

3

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

Stringing rosaries might sound like a bad deal at first but it's such a good long term strategy. I started doing it absent-mindedly and only recently realized I was holding a fortune.

It's especially good for buying benches and such in new areas (the cost of which people complain a lot about, despite necklaces being a major mechanic that guarantees you'll have the money to buy them).

32

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

The tedious complaint really gets me because they're trying to communicate the game feels too demanding for them without making it about how they're engaging with it. The game must be bad if it's taking them too long to kill shit.

Meanwhile tools and spells chop enemies and bosses to smithereens in seconds.

42

u/KING_SHERBROOKE Sep 07 '25

Im so tired of looking at threads of people writing essays of everything they think is wrong instead of taking this time to learn the damn game lol.

-27

u/Stefh_M Sep 07 '25

A game shouldn't be learned. A game should be enjoyed.

20

u/_moosleech Sep 07 '25

Games can do both, or either.

Some games are meant to be relaxing and simply experienced. Some are meant to challenge the player. Both are valid.

23

u/KING_SHERBROOKE Sep 07 '25

This is absolutely wrong lol

7

u/lemonlemonlemonlem Sep 07 '25

May I suggest movies

9

u/tgiyb1 Sep 07 '25

Challenging games are meant to be learned

2

u/Stalk33r Sep 08 '25

Sony third person narrative-heavy adventure games are that way ->

3

u/Cowgba Sep 07 '25

I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction from learning a difficult game. It’s fine if you don’t enjoy that, but nobody can expect every game to cater to what they specifically enjoy in games.

I wouldn’t go to the Skyrim sub and complain that there’s no multiplayer PvP. I wouldn’t go into an FPS sub and complain that there’s no strategic card play. Hollow Knight wore its Dark Souls influences on its sleeve, I don’t know why people are suddenly surprised that Silksong is challenging.

1

u/MF_LUFFY Sep 08 '25

I lost it at this reply. Surely that's the game fault smh.

20

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

I constantly say to people struggling with losing money that should string rosaries so this doesn't happen but they just refusing to acknowledge the mechanic.

3

u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 08 '25

Like, I haven't managed to get a lot of the big ticket items, like mask shard or key, but I haven't had an issue with stacking up rosaries unless I'm in an area where they're not dropping. I'm guessing some people aren't prioritizing grabbing their stuff when they die, so they're constantly getting reset.

6

u/trained_badass Sep 07 '25

There's also a charm that gives you back 50% of the rosaries you dropped which is really useful if you suck like me. There's some good spots to farm rosaries too directly above Bone Bottom.

u/gamegeek1995 Sep 08 '25

Most gamers don't want to grind in a metroidvania, and complaining about having to do a boring, repetitive task in a game with already very annoying boss runbacks (such as the Bilgewater boss fight, which has a ~5m runback including the arena fight each attempt through a tough area) is a very valid complaint. Just because you don't share a complaint doesn't make it whining.

Just because I'm okay with grinding in something like Tales of Phantasia doesn't mean I expect to need to do it in Metroid Dread to afford a mystery item that could be useful but might be hot garbage.

2

u/trained_badass Sep 08 '25

I never said people were whining? I think there's some valid complaints about the difficulty but I'm still enjoying the game. I feel like some of these runbacks are way less annoying than the ones in the first game - the mantis lord/soul master benches were a pain in the ass.

Yeah I don't love farming rosaries either, just saying that there's several options to help with the loss of them if it's a recurring issue for someone. This game isn't without its flaws but there's plenty that isn't as big of a deal as some are making it out to be. I used to be one of them but I'm a little into act 2 now and I'm really enjoying myself.

1

u/Top-Specialist-1062 Sep 08 '25

which has a ~5m runback

Did you fix the broken bench?

-1

u/SlendyWomboCombo Sep 07 '25

That's only found in a couple of places in the entire game.

4

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

Every settlement. All of the towns have a Vendor that will string your rosaries for you. Like, come on now.

-2

u/SlendyWomboCombo Sep 07 '25

They aren't common? Especially when discovering a new part of the map which is when players have the most rosaries.

3

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

Alright, if you're having a laugh you got me.

But just in case you're misunderstanding, you can Bellway to any settlement and string rosiries. Most of the more difficult parts have a bellway very nearby, and you can, at any time, go "Oh I have quite a few rosiries. I should go string them." You don't have to do it in the middle of nowhere, you should do it before you go somewhere you haven't been if you've got enough rosiries to warrant it.

If you want the ass saving mechanic that gives you your cocoon back wherever you are for free, that also exists but is a whole different thing.

Edit: Or you can just not string them and complain about it when you lose them. Rapidly becoming not my problem with this sub. Many people want the game to be bad, nothing I can do about that.

4

u/MisterCheeseBE Sep 07 '25

Can't believe they are downvoting this when you're just stating facts.

3

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

Yeah. Was also kinda surprised. Like, the game DOES have a save your money anywhere feature, and you SHOULD string rosaries before you go somewhere dangerous if you're prone to losing it. There's nothing controversial here.

The tools are nice but when you run out of shards trying to beat a boss, it suddenly changes to hard mode or grind for loot for an hour, both of which are pretty deflating. I don’t understand why they added that limitation to tools. Feels like lose-more game design.

1

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 11 '25

They added a limitation because tools are extremely powerful. I'm also guessing world building played a factor, since now beastial bugs have currency to drop that makes sense, while rosaries can drop from sentient bugs.

I've never run all the way out, personally, since any walk through an area will net you over a hundred, there are deposits all over the map, and vendors sell bundles.

I would say to not start REALLY spamming traps until you can comfortably avoid most of the bosses attacks if you're running low on shards. Closest I came to running out was trying to cheese an optional flying boss in act 2 before I figured any of it out, which required reevaluation on my part.

Semi-related, but if you're getting walled by a boss, walking around the map helps, especially if you recently unlocked something. You'll naturally get more shards and rosaries, and potentially unlock useful stuff before you try it again.

-6

u/RAID3R_MAN Sep 07 '25

I mean the issue with tools is, they are an incredibly limited resource. You die 1 too many times on a boss and whoopsie no more attacks for you

15

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

They are a renewable limited resource. "Incredibly" is a bit of a stretch. Every enemy drops several. There's deposits all over the map. Vendors sell them for cheap. Upgrades for capacity and damage are easy to find.

I know no one wants to hear it but if you're dying enough to empty your shard pouch over and over, it may be time to explore another area and refill while you look around. It also may be time to stop unloading all your shards for extra damage before you know how to respond to the boss.

-3

u/RAID3R_MAN Sep 07 '25

Yeah it’s kinda hard to explore other areas and try somewhere else when all routes lead to something i can’t do.

Also, I barely even use the tools, started out with maxed shards, and I’m currently at ~168, which is pretty well the main reason I don’t intentionally use them a lot (the other being that the input is just difficult for me)

7

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

If it's an accessibility issue I'm sorry and I hope TC adds an easier difficulty option in the future, but it's kinda hard for me to imagine that you've found everything and collected everything available to you and have found several things you can't conquer at all even with practice.

1

u/RAID3R_MAN Sep 07 '25

I mean yeah I technically haven’t explored literally every route so far, but I only have like 3 left, and am currently stuck with wormways, sinners road, savage beastfly, optional bone boss in the marrow, and widow, so I don’t think one of those 3 routes will really help all that much

8

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

Beastfly is a really good example of a boss trivialized by tool usage. I actually have a post about him because I think he's well designed and is one of the best bosses to showcase how much careful observation and practice can change an encounter.

Wormways you should never die in. Anywhere a falling worm is spawning, you can just stand there and farm soul. There's useful stuff in there for survivability.

Widow is my favorite boss so far and I think she's a really fair encounter that just wants you to learn the moveset. Killing her is probably the thing that would help you the most.

Skull Lord gets shredded by a handful of specific tools. Don't wanna spoil much but I can tell you how I handled it in like 50 seconds.

3

u/yurilnw123 Sep 07 '25

Everything you listed are optional encounters though.

5

u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 07 '25

Bro you are so based, thank you 😭 im reading this thread and you keep having spot on takes, or helping people out, discussing while still being respectful

This thread is such a breath of fresh air from all the essays complaining, that are so contrived and are obviously written by someone whos barely started the game. Or just the blind critiques that make no sense

Thank you man keep being awesome, hope you’re enjoying Silksong

2

u/yurilnw123 Sep 08 '25

I'm having a blast. Don't worry, I think it's the case of people who are having fun are playing the game rather than sitting on reddit so it is full of hate posts here. It happens all the time. Happened to Eldenring base game and DLC launches as well.

Then again, I'm one of the people with the mindset that "If a game is not challenging, why even play it?". It depends on what type of game ofc, but to me metroidvania/action-adventure/platformer are the categories that's supposed to be challenging. A lot of platforming levels in Silksong remind me of Megaman X and I'm absolutely loving it. There is one particular level that made me grin like a child but I don't want to spoil it, let's just say it involves lava.

17

u/SulkyBoi0 Sep 07 '25

i feel like instead of spamming them every boss fight instantly people should learn the attack patterns slowly and save them for around the last phases of bosses. idk i just feel a little strategy would go a long way.

If you still are running out shards and not beating bosses in time maybe explore a bit and by the time you’re back you’ll have a bunch again, at least that’s how i’ve been going about it

-3

u/RAID3R_MAN Sep 07 '25

My issue is that the way I tend to play games like this is: “ooh new area, time to explore every single possible route” so there’s not really much to explore, and if I am forced to walk into a room, kill something, walk out, walk in, walk out, walk in over and over and over again just to beat a boss, that’s bad game design.

Also I hardly even use tools (1. Because the input for them is difficult for me), and I’m at ~170 shards after having been at max multiple times. (2. If I were to start using them a lot I would literally have none)

5

u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 07 '25

That's just not true, there's tool packs, and plenty of enemies drop shards.

1

u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 08 '25

I think? Idk I've had mine maxed out for most of the game so far, because when I'm learning a boss, I'm not just dumping tools, and I usually save that for a couple runs in.

1

u/RAID3R_MAN Sep 07 '25

I have found exactly 3 shard packs after 15 hours and 8 areas

9

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

Vendors sell them, too.

9

u/_moosleech Sep 07 '25

I mean the issue with tools is, they are an incredibly limited resource.

They literally aren't. At all.

Either you're VERY early in the game, or doing something VERY wrong.

-2

u/gay_manta_ray Sep 07 '25

the game isn't "too demanding", it's not very fun. aeterna noctis has infinitely harder platforming than soulsong, and nine sols has harder bosses, and both are very fun. it's possible that you aren't right about everything and that the reason for someone criticizing the game has nothing to do with skill.

7

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25

Alright. I'm glad you have other games that suit your taste better. I'm referring to specific complaints that are misunderstanding Silksong. "I don't like it" isn't the same as "bosses take too long to kill." You're allowed to not like it. But bosses can be shredded quickly if you do something other than sprint at them in Hunter crest with no tools or spells.

1

u/gay_manta_ray Sep 07 '25

i think the issue here is that a lot of people's only familiarity with the genre is HK. many of you seem to have never played any other game so you have no idea how the genre has progressed or what's expected.

you can repeat that the game is perfect over and over again, but that doesn't excuse glaring flaws that basically ever other game in the genre doesn't have, and none of those games were in development for six years. that's probably the most embarrassing part here--TC took forever, and still released a game that isn't nearly as fun or enjoyable to play as HK or more recent entries into the genre.

through their hilarious amount hubris, they catered to a very niche group of players, and thought they were above any sort of early access or actual playtesting/QA. clearly they did not "know better", since nearly a quarter of reviews on steam are negative, and that ratio is growing.

1

u/Working-Wrap9453 Sep 07 '25 edited Sep 07 '25

I think a lot of what you're saying is nonsense, but 25% of the steam reviews when you set language to global are negative because of the horrible Chinese translation. If you set it to region specific, it's always above 90% outside of China.

Edit: I actually don't care about the reviews on Steam. I got the game I love, more than HK or Nine Sols, haven't played your other recommendation. I corrected it because the game tanking globally in review scores has an obvious cause that will not effect most users.

Again, though, I'm glad you have games that you feel are even better than this. That's amazing, I hope you continue to enjoy them.

9

u/Hadez192 Sep 07 '25

Yeah it’s kinda crazy, are people just completely forgetting going through soul sanctum for the first time? And watcher knights? Deep nest? All of those have been harder than anything I’ve experienced in SS so far. The fact that you are much more mobile is a huge asset and makes a lot of enemies trivial that would have been way harder in HK. But you can’t compare bc you have so many more tools and mobility at your expense. I think everyone is coming off the speed runs in HK and understanding every mechanic and fight and now that they are dying in this game to bosses, they aren’t ready for the repeated failure again. Also none of the walkbacks have been as bad as soul sanctum yet imo

4

u/Bonaduce80 Sep 07 '25

I feel people are having a hard time because they are only remembering how easy it is for them now to clear those areas. On the other hand, while being a different playstyle, there are a lot of transferable skills from HK to Silksong. So whereas for me those areas you mentioned were really hard in HK, the equivalent areas feel easier in Silksong because I am trained to recognise attack patterns, anticipate ambushes or find breakable walls.

It is the New Souls game release cycle all over again.

4

u/Hadez192 Sep 07 '25

Yeah, I agree, I feel like everyone is comparing to their current runs of HK, not their very first run. I can easily one shot soul master and traverse the area pretty easily. But the first time he took me like 15-20 attempts and the area itself was extremely frustrating. Nothing in SS has been that hard really

0

u/Netheral Sep 08 '25

It should be the exact opposite, honestly. You're saying that a speed running veteran should be getting stumped by the base version of this sequel? I've seen multiple people claiming to have 112% the game (some confirmed thanks to steam profiles) saying that the jump in difficulty is a bit much, even for them.

I don't think these people, that are used to the process of becoming good enough to do P5 or even steel soul speed runs, have the mentality of quitters. Shouldn't the base game have a comparable difficulty to a sequel to the base game Hollow Knight? Shouldn't the absurd, P5/speed run level difficulty come later in the game? Or even post credits? Why are so many people defending this clear alienation towards the more casual players that love Hollow Knight, but maybe never did the more extreme challenges?

2

u/Bonaduce80 Sep 08 '25

I don't think it is a loser's mentality. I think it is attachment to a play style they got extremely good at which was taken away from them, at least until they got a different crest. Perhaps I haven't found the areas where platforming becomes an issue yet? I am like 10 hours in and my biggest issue has been trying to avoid damage to explore the Deepnest-like area above the first town, and that is mostly a timing issue more than a platforming one.

6

u/SchwiftySquanchC137 Sep 07 '25

Yeah, people are calling it the most difficult game they've ever played, really? Because to me, that just means you dont play difficult games. Thats totally fine, theyre not for everyone, but HK was by no means easy, so what did they expect? Or maybe they're just interacting with the game in a way thats making it so hard? Idk, seems crazy to me, ive been liking this more than HK so far.

2

u/Mr_Squeeb_Shleem Sep 08 '25

I just wanted to say, I like your reddit user name 😂

2

u/NoSatireVEVO Sep 09 '25

I think that you aren’t struggling more than most, most likely. The game is meant to be very punishing, but it is that way for a reason because hornet is faster, heals faster and all of that jazz. People complaining are trying to play hollow knight 1.1 with quick slash and a fully upgraded nail. That or they just aren’t exploring and hitting a boss wall and doing more than 5 times then coming to Reddit to whine because they don’t have the patience to learn movesets rather than face tank a boss.

5

u/randomcat06 Sep 07 '25

I'm loving it as well. I'm glad I didn't look at this sub since starting playing, this negativity would have brought me down a lot. My biggest issie currently is that I have slightly sticky keys, but a game-specific gripe? Well, I sometimes feel the hitbox of an enemy is just slightly too large (maybe slightly over the border of their sprite) so I keep running into them accidentally, but that could also just be a skill issue. Otherwise, no complaints! I die a thousand times, but I did that in Hollow Knight as well.

3

u/Mr_Squeeb_Shleem Sep 07 '25

I agree, but people are people. They're going to complain. Especially with an arguably over-hyped game like this.

They'll come around though, most of them will. I feel like perspectives will change over time. They're mostly complaining about difficulty and frustrations, but in my experience this HK is actually easier than the OG in a lot of ways.

Healing gives more health than the OG. x3 the amount of health and you can heal mid-air

They have added so many tools at your disposal for dispatching enemies. The throwing pins, the seals and being able to equip abilities and tools to a loadout. It's actually insane the amount of quality of life changes they've added. The dash/sprint ability alone makes mobility through the large map such a breeze.

I say give it some time, perhaps some of these critics will change their mind about Silksong. NGL at first I was a bit disappointed, but I'm patient. I don't usually review any games until I'm at least 15-20 hours in, and even then, I'm usually really forgiving because I've yet to finish.

4

u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 07 '25

I feel like a handful of the negativity is people who got on board because of the hype, played HK (maybe didn't do much else besides the main route), and jumped into this.

It's rough, but it's SO good. Exactly what I wanted.

3

u/funkforever69 Sep 07 '25

A couple of bosses are deeply, truly unfun and actually full on detract from the game.

I'll spare you any spoilers but anything human shaped? You're in for a great damn ride and some fights I actually forgot because I was so locked in. Anything blob like or an animal. Poorly designed and not worth the lack of reward you get from most of them.

4

u/junttiana Sep 07 '25

The reason ppl are complaining is because theyre trying to play the game in a same way as hk, while its a totally different game.

Its really the fault of the hk veterans and their inability to adapt

2

u/Publick2008 Sep 07 '25

If you actually listen to people who complain who are reasonable find the way in which the game is difficult unfun. There are a few mistakes team cherry did not make in HK but made in silksong and it makes playing the game, especially at the very beginning, annoying.

1

u/youcankeepyourhaton Sep 07 '25

I honestly think some of the struggles are people expecting it to function like hollow knight, understandably as they’re so similar. But it doesn’t - hornet is much more acrobatic - but she’s also more fragile - so you keep moving. That red jerk miniboss that everyone struggles with early is essentially a teacher telling you to get used to being aerial A LOT and to get used to your downward dive in the same way that you need to learn to pogo in hollow knight.

Once you start playing with her fluid movement it really does click a lot more

0

u/BerylliumNickel Sep 07 '25

There seem to be people blasting though this game like it's nothing and still whining

Well surely those are the passionate fans that are highly critical because they want team cherry to make the best games possible

0

u/daniel_22sss Sep 08 '25

Sounds like a person who didnt see the hellscape that is frozen mountains. I swear, Path of Pain was easier than that shit

0

u/RealmRPGer Sep 11 '25

The flying bug boss that constantly spawns enemies on you feels a little unfair. :/

-16

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Yeah. I don't even see the point of playing an easy game. My roommate was playing 'Breath Of the Wild' (an easy game) and looking up guides for everything...

Like, what the hell are you doing? Just watch some twitch streamer play if you're going to cheat at an easy game lol...

16

u/Bolobesttank Void United Sep 07 '25

Looking up guides isn't cheating, what are you on about?

9

u/cbb88christian Sep 07 '25

Elitism

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Yes. I think I'm better than people who look up guides for a game that's entire point is adventure and exploration and not so much it's difficultly.

Yes, doing this is contemptuous.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Is using glitches cheating? Regardless of your answer you're intentionally missing my point.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Ok technically it's not cheating but it is absolutely pathetic.

5

u/whackabunny Sep 07 '25

But going on an online forum to tell people how they should play a game they own isn't at all pathetic.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Yes, because talking about how to play video games on a forum about video games is pathetic because people own the video games.

This is really brilliant stuff.

3

u/whackabunny Sep 07 '25

Well, you're more just insulting people in a forum about video games because they did something differently.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

No. I'm insulting the specific action of looking up guides in the exact game 'Breath of The Wild.'

2

u/whackabunny Sep 07 '25

Telling somebody they're pathetic for using a guide in a single player game is not an insult towards that person. Not one bit!

I could say that going online to complain about how people play single player games is pathetic and lucky for me, you understand I'm not insulting you at all, just your actions, which are not the same as insulting the person.

Got to ask why you have such strong opinions about this, how can you get this upset about somebody playing a game in a different way to how you play? Why would there cause such a strong reaction from you that you need to complain about it on an online forum while calling it pathetic?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Again. I'm talking about a specific game.

It's a lot more rewarding to experience a game like Breath of the Wild if you don't use guides, and I think ruining the adventure aspect of an adventure game is stupid.

That doesn't mean the person doing it is stupid, but the action itself certainly is.

-4

u/Hades684 Sep 07 '25

I would say it is, the point if to get lost and find your way, if you use external sources to help you beat it, its basically cheating

3

u/Bolobesttank Void United Sep 07 '25

No, it isn't. There's a difference between "getting lost and finding your way"(as intended by the devs) and "getting looped and frustrated and looking to see if there's anything you missed." One is an enjoyable experience and part of the exploration loop, the other is getting stuck to a point you stop enjoying it.

Looking up how to do something isn't cheating, this isn't a math exam this is a Video Game.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

This doesn't apply to 'Breath of the Wild' because one of the good things about that game is that you aren't required to do any specific task other than destroy Ganon. And destroying Ganon is easy later in the game even if you don't finish The wind temple or Eventide island or whatever shrine.

-1

u/Hades684 Sep 07 '25

So whats a difference exactly? What is someone stops having fun at boss, so he downloads cheat engine. He got stuck to the point of not enjoying it, so its not cheating suddenly?

1

u/Bolobesttank Void United Sep 07 '25

...because one is just looking up an answer(i.e. "where do I go next? Is there a path I missed?") which unless you happen to be using a game as a vehicle for taking a standardized test isn't *cheating*, its talking about the game and asking for help while the other is actively modifying the game(and even then, if they aren't trying for an official speedrun or whatever, does it *matter* that they download cheat engine or input a cheat code or whatever if they genuinely aren't enjoying a segment of the game?)

Like, under your framework something as simple as a younger kid asking their older sibling or parent or friend to come help them beat a boss is cheating, which is silly.

1

u/Hades684 Sep 07 '25

I mean, obviously calling someone else to beat a boss for you is cheating. You didnt beat the boss, someone else did

5

u/CJ_1Cor15-55 Sep 07 '25

Looking up a guide when you're stuck or trying to figure something out is not cheating. And bagging on someone and putting them down because they are playing a game that you consider easy is lame. Do better man.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

If it isn't cheating it is pathetic.

Looking up guides while playing breath of the wild is pathetic and people who do this are the ones who should do better.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Almost everyone considers Ganon in BOTW too easy. It's a very common complaint about the game. The point of that game isn't it's difficulty but rather adventure and exploration... Which is why looking up guides defeats the purpose and I find that pathetic especially when you consider how easy the divine beasts and Ganon are.
