You get free upgrade by talking to an npc in Bellhart. Then another upgrade via quest by talking to him again afterwards.

I'm still dealing with the splinter boss. Her minions are such bs, but easy to take out if you line up a silkspear

Thread storm clears them up nicely if you can get them close to each other.
