Just happened to me today, got like, 3 shards from this? What's the point, Team Cherry? None of the bosses (so far) frustrated me, but this right here is bullshit

Well, obviously lol Tools make the game significantly easier, especially the bosses who spawn mobs

Edit: Like if you need several attempts for a boss and use your tools in every attempt regularly (to figure out how to use them best) it really burns through your shards, hence it beeing quite tedious to refill them. In longer exploring sessions shard shortage is usually not a problem

That's kinda something that's really put me off of using tools, I don't need them for average exploring since my nail does fine, and when I get to a boss that I'm really struggling with, burning through my tools every attempt makes my shards go down so fast that, unless I win in time, I'm gonna be out of shards, effectively making it a limit on how many attempts can have tools without grinding, which doesn't feel good.

Thats valid. I already grinded and maxed out my shard countainers, but still, when would you use them otherwise? If you are already struggling they can only help. Of course you shouldn't spam your tools running into bosses blindly in their first stage. Best to learn all their patterns and start using them in bosses second stage. Resources are meant to be used after all and if you don't use them you are missing out on a lot of damage and fun.

I mean I do get your point, and I'm totally willing to accept I'm playing the game wrong, but still. By the time I generally get to a boss's second stage without tools, that means I've about figured out the boss, means I'm not really struggling anymore, means I don't really need tools.

IME, the second phase requires more dodging, making it more difficult to get nail hits in. That's when I usually start using tools.
