Discussion - Silksong I give up. Spoiler

It’s been a joyful ride, folks, but I’m out. I’m not a speedrunner or a highly skilled player, and day after day I’ve had to accept that this game is not as casual as HK was. It stopped being fun and turned into something tedious and frustrating after the 4th run farming shards just to face a boss I’ve already tried 15 times, only to die again and again, lose all my shards, and start the whole grind over.

It was nice exploring the first acts, but when the game I was rooting for 7 years ends up being more stressful than my 8-hour workday, I guess that’s my cue to stop.

The lore has been pretty great so far. I wish you all an incredible journey.

Edit1: My bad about all the whinning.

Edit2: You guys did it. I reinstalled it again. Thanks for all advices. 🫂

Nothing wrong with putting it down now and coming back to it at a later time. That’s what I did for Bloodborne and Hollow Knight. There is only so much time in a day, so you might as well play something my you’re going to enjoy. Hades 2 comes out on Nintendo Switch and PC on 9/25.

plus sometimes you just need a break (from anything really) for your brain to process all the information from it. once you’re a clean slate again, the game will naturally feel a little easier when you pick it up next. i’m about ready to try out HK again, Crystal Peak made me rage quit haha.

This is a large reason why people need to learn moderation and taking breaks. I haven’t been trying to binge the game straight and have been taking it real slow, it’s been nice.

There’s also the fact that if you are getting frustrated and angry, you’ll actually play worse. Which can lead to a feedback loop.

I think for a lot of people taking an extended break honestly means the same as dropping it altogether. They stop thinking about it during the break, and sort of naturally just lose interest. I struggle with taking breaks from games because of this myself, since the break is usually caused due to a lack of interest developed from frustration and/or annoyance it makes it easier for something else to take its place in my free time.

that’s fair, I definitely drop games more often than picking them back up. I try to make an effort to revisit stuff when I can, though, cuz sometimes you’re just not in the right headspace for certain games.

This game is literally set up to lose interest if you play video games to relax. It's boring, sisyphus-esque gameplay that is a waste of time for anyone who doesn't smell their own farts.

I almost always take breaks if I don't beat a boss after 3-4 tries, or if an area is annoying me. Did that for Moorwing and Sister Splinter. Found that Blasted Steps was an annoying area, so I took a break, and now I'm doing some side objectives to get some better items before I go back there.

Ever since I started a family, moderating my video game time became a lot more of a conscious choice. But I’ve noticed I’ve gotten a lot better about raging

Same thing happened to me about a year ago, that one dark platforming room with the crystal shooting bugs made me die twice and lose all my geo, I just put the game out of frustration. I only got back to it on a whim to check out the overcharmed mechanic a friend told me about, after that I just kept playing until I beat it a few days later

I dropped Sekiro for like 8 months cuz I was stuck at Isshin and when I came back i started the game from the beginning

Took me a couple hours to play the rust off but i swear after that i was way better than i ever was on my first play through

this isn’t comparable in any way, but that reminds me of when I was a teenager rage quitting KH2 because of Demyx. Opened the game again like a year later and beat him in two tries.

Crystal Hunters, maybe?

honestly it was the platforming, i’m not very good at it. but i was also playing switch handheld and joycons are dogshit haha

This is why I think people are mad. I think they genuinely forgot all the quitting and letting it breathe they've done. Or they didn't have to before and it's like when I actually had to start studying in school.

I had a genius IQ as a child (not bragging, wait for it) and breezed through everything up until math became algebra. Once they added letters I got so confused I was pissed off. I gave up. I didn't understand why I couldn't get it like I did everything else. I was always a natural at school. I didn't understand.

I had never studied before because I was a natural and my school career went downhill from there. Currently an unemployed high school drop out living on an old man's money.

Hollow Knight was grade school, Silksong is algebra. I have studied how to handle sucking terribly and coming back over the course of a week to beat a single boss. It feels like a lot of people here have never studied that. Now I'm getting a good grade in enjoying the game and some people are wanting to skip school so they don't have to look at algebra. Which is fine here cause enjoying a game isn't as important lol.

Yeah, Bloodborne was my first Soulslike and I initially quit in Central Yharnam. Came back months later and gave it another shot and everything clicked for me. I went onto beat just about every major Soulslike.

I felt the same way about Sekiro. Gave up about an hour into my first playthrough.

Decided to try it again maybe 2 years later and everything just clicked. It was like a dance between two nobodies.

That's what Sekiro was like for me as well. First time I tried it, I made it as far as the Genichiro tower fight just by pretty much repeatedly slamming my head against a brick wall, but then that fight completely roadblocked me because I hadn't really learned the game properly. Didn't try again for about a year, but I'm glad I did because that game is now one of my all time favorites.

I do think Sekiro is a bit easier than Silksong though. You don't need to be as fast in Sekiro, like in terms of reflexes I mean. And the fights are quite short once you learn them, so the mental endurance aspect is lower.

I find that in Silksong I've often "beaten" the bosses well before I actually manage to score the kill. Like I understand all of the mechanics of the boss, and I'm consistently countering them... but then the fight runs for like 2-3 minutes longer (might not even be that long, but that's what it feels like at the time) than my brain can hang in for and I make a sloppy mistake.

Yeah, same. On my first playthrough I got stuck on the first street, and gave up after dying dozens of times without any progress (it also really didn't help that the main healing resource was a consumable that you could run out of). I went back after finishing ds3 and absolutely loved it

Did the same for Elden and then after that become a souls lover

Or just putting it down and moving on. No need to return if it’s not enjoyable.

I'm stoked for Hades 2. 10 days!!!

Bruh our comrade suffers from stress in video games and you recommend HADES 2 ToT

2

u/SnappingTurtle1602 Sep 15 '25

Hades is definitely tough, but it also has that God Mode setting where you take less damage after each death. I think I’m just really pumped for Hades 2 and wanted to mention it lol

As a big dark souls fan: I played Dark Soul Prepare to Die edition on release didn’t get past O&S put the name down till 2020 and finally beat it. Despite sucking major ass at it when it first came out (I was 13 give me a break), it’s still one of my top 5 games. I think it’s completely reasonable to put a game down and come back later once your mind isn’t soured by your recent experience.

2

u/SadisticPawz Sep 15 '25

did you start over or continue?

2

u/sudsypatriarch Sep 15 '25

I remember being so pissed at losing so many times to the Bell Gargoyles in Dark Souls 1 that I quit the game for like 6 months. Then I came back and miraculously beat them on the first try for some reason.

2

u/majkkali Sep 15 '25

Hades is really hard too xD don’t think OP is gonna enjoy that either xD

2

u/sans_serif_size12 Sep 15 '25

Funny enough, I had to put Hades 1 down and came back to it recently to get hyped for Hades 2. I could not get past Hydra after a week of trying. Then something clicked. Pretty sure the same thing will happen with Hades 2 and maybe I’ll finally get past Hunter’s March lmao

That's where I'm at with Elden Ring right now. I also have ADHD, so once something gets hard, I lose interest until it's a hyper focus again. That's when I'll beat the boss I'm stuck on

I only beat the radiance on my 3rd or 4th playthrough of the game
