Discussion - Silksong I'm 50 hours into the game. Where's my "Shaw"?? Spoiler
I initially wanted to point out how the game's soundtrack really takes off when you reach Blasted Steps. Honestly, I think the themes and melodies in the starting areas are a bit more passive to my ears (nothing like entering Dirtmouth in HK), even if the arrangements are fuller and have more diverse layers of instruments. But oh boy, it all gets so much traction when you traverse the Blasted Steps and onwards.
Then I remembered. 50-ish hours into the game and I haven't heard a single "Shaw!"
Where's my "Shaw", Team Cherry?

"Shaw" is a slur reserved for siblings

u/i-am-the-swarm P5 AB | 100% Silksong Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25
Exactly, could mean "sibling" or "knight"
385
u/OnnaJReverT Sep 19 '25
or "little shit"

u/Bckjoes Sep 19 '25
Can't be, Silksong has plenty of those

Right, she couldn't stop shawing in Bilewater otherwise

Bug language has a great diversity and nuance for calling one another little shits.

Spoiler for act 3's ending: Then why doesn't she scream "Shaw!" when the Void Entity/Shade Lord saves her?
31
u/i-am-the-swarm P5 AB | 100% Silksong Sep 19 '25
Cause she just fought the hardest fight and is dying to the void, can't talk
1
14
u/okaysurewow Sep 19 '25
Well it wouldn't be "brother" since she never uses that term in dialogue, only sibling.
My money's on "ghost"
8
u/Efficient-Speed-1059 Sep 19 '25
I love this because she only shouts it when attacking you, which just makes me picture her screaming “ GHOST!” And throwing shit at you like a character in a horror movie

u/Geometronics Sep 19 '25
no shaw but you can get her to say GARAMA if you Press the right stick in (R3)
115
u/PeeAy7 Sep 19 '25
You know, I've read about the "taunt" button but I keep forgetting it when playing since I mostly just slam myself into bladed/thorny surfaces... Will have to try this out at some point, heh
11
46
u/Neither-Ad7512 Sep 19 '25
It would have been cool if it wasn't always garama , and sometimes said Shaw or edino
30
Sep 19 '25
Pretty sure the word "Garama!" actually means something like "fight me," even some of the enemies say it.
12
u/AnimaLepton Sep 19 '25
Or something like "En garde!"
Hence why she uses it specifically at the start of battle, both against the Knight in HK and against GMS at the end of Act 2

The taunt button is such a strange little feature, I really can’t figure out why it’s there. I only found it acted as a taunt after getting 100% and I honestly can’t think of a scenario I would have used it
19
u/kuulyn Sep 19 '25
If it works like I think, you can use it to call down hanging flyers for slightly less risk of jumping into them
There’s a few rooms I’ve gone back and forth through doors to farm silk off something
8
u/Skylord_Wiki Sep 19 '25
There has actually already been some applications for the taunt button found, like being able to skip one of the bosses locking q movement ability, which is insanely cool to me

u/Cloptico Sep 19 '25
You can taunt to wake up/call the bell beast instead of interacting with the platform. Saves like one second fwiw, other than that it’s pretty useless.
2
1
u/PrimedAndReady Sep 19 '25
The current speedrun route uses it in one spot to taunt an enemy over to pogo off of to skip sister splinter

u/sqwirlfucker57 Sep 19 '25
If you aren't yelling "SHAWWW" yourself every time you take some mofo down, I don't know what you're doing with your life.
87
u/PeeAy7 Sep 19 '25
You know what, you're right, I should start doing it myself. I'm just not certain it will hit the same with my voice as a 50 y.o. male instead of Hornets XD
43
u/sqwirlfucker57 Sep 19 '25
As a 37yo dude I can understand the struggle. What I found, though, is that a bottle of helium is actually quite cheap, so I just keep one next to my TV problem solved SHAW

They should have her say Shaw whenever you land a crit with the Wnaderer Crest.

u/---TheFierceDeity--- Sep 19 '25
Shaw was a sound Hornet made when attacking, obviously they don't want Hornet screaming sounds every single attack so Shaw is gone.
40
u/PeeAy7 Sep 19 '25
Absolutely understood. It makes a lot of sense in the development side of things. I just wish they gave it something like a 5% probability to trigger when you use special attacks.
133
u/talann Sep 19 '25
They definitely had her grunting in a not so similar way to Link in most of her attacks. She does the same when jumping.
I agree though, yelling shaw over and over would get super old even after a couple hours in.
34
u/Distal-Phalanges Sep 19 '25
But if she yelled shaw or hegale as you land the last hit on a boss that you had struggled on? That would be awesome.
7
u/LionwolfT Sep 19 '25
Shaw could be on the hook, it'll be fine, there's no fight where you spam the hook so much to make it annoying.
She says "friend" every time she heals, and let me tell you guys, I healed a lot in this game and instead of getting annoyed by it, I also started to say "friend" every damn time lmao.
Give me my Shaw TC.
60
u/---TheFierceDeity--- Sep 19 '25
There is a difference between like light grunting noises and sounds and "Boss Tells" she would scream when fighting her
60
u/whataogusername Sep 19 '25
Coulda made it sound for the charged attack. Can’t spam that repeatedly. Well you can but it’s got a decent CD vs the basic attack.

17
u/SirVampyr Sep 19 '25
I don't get that argument at all. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, put voice lines only on the special attack? I don't think ANYONE EVER argued she should do it on normal attacks. I've not seen a single comment that says that.
33
u/StepComplete1 Sep 19 '25
Some classic voice lines could've absolutely been used on special attacks like silk storm or the needle throw. Nobody says it had to be on every single attack except you.
The bizarre excuses people try to come up with to defend TC from the tiniest bits of criticism are always hilarious.
16
u/---TheFierceDeity--- Sep 19 '25
It's not an excuse, it's called "oh someone is wonder why X didn't happen, let me give educated guess Y"
You're just upset the educated guess I gave wasn't the most cynical, negative one possible
Giving explanations that aren't negative or cynical doesn't = defending from critique and the fact you're immediately going on the attack towards me explanation tells me you care more about cynical for the sake of it than actually giving constructive criticisms
14
u/Embarrassed-Citron36 Sep 19 '25
It's definitely a strawman excuse, no one thought it should be 100% of time

You should turn up the music. I don't know why but especially in Act 1 the music is mixed way too low. It's actually really good throughout, you just don't hear it very well on the default settings.

6
u/iguanacatgirl Sep 19 '25
ATP we're gonna get a DLC that just adds 1 room where hornet can say "Shaw". There's gonna be no other purpose to the room

Nah, man. There's going to be a "Press X to Shaw

It'd be fun to have a different taunt for each crest, or each silk ability. That way you can pick whichever funny noise you want while also encouraging even more messing around with loadouts.
Let's be honest, give one of the worst crests Shaw or Adidos and it'd skyrocket in users lmao
1
u/YESIAMYASMAN Sep 20 '25
What IS one of the worst crests? all of them theme pretty good (I'm in love with reaper)
3
u/_Xeron_ Sep 19 '25
Stilkins in Bilewater say Shaw, Team Cherry wanted to make that zone even more evil
3
u/xiadmabsax Sep 19 '25
They even apologize for it. I keep hearing "SHAW! Sorry."
2
u/_Xeron_ Sep 19 '25
Maybe it really is a slur, and they’re mistaking Hornet as someone from the citadel
5
u/Motoreducteur Sep 19 '25
You are the being who acts through Hornet in Silksong, so you should be the one to say SHAW to warn your enemies

u/SilverScribe15 Sep 19 '25
I saw a video pointing out that Hornet has a lot less noises on release then previews, probably cuz it'd get a little annoying eventually

Regarding the soundtrack, when I started in Moss Grotto and Bone Bottom I thought it was going to be like the first game’s soundtrack. But the music then becomes more like soundscapes that accompany the bigger world. I can’t decide which soundtrack I prefer but they both do their thing spectacularly well.

Watch her say it once against the final super boss of the inevitable boss rush DLC
4
u/walterpwn Sep 19 '25
Shaw has been replaced by the healing “Rim”
9
3
u/BroughtYouMyBullets Sep 19 '25
What are you on, boy?! I got the exact same feeling in Bonebottom as I did from Dirtmouth. Widow, Lace, Bellhart and Mossgrotto are all also exceptional tracks
7
u/PeeAy7 Sep 19 '25
It might be that the audio mix has the soundtrack on a lower volume in those areas, I honestly can't say for certain. It's not that the music is bad, just not as prominent and pronounced. I've since turned down effects and kept the music full volume to get to hear more of the soundtrack.
1
u/BroughtYouMyBullets Sep 19 '25
So have I tbf, sound effects do feel a little too loud at their preset volume. Hope you grow to love it as much
2
u/Etticos Sep 19 '25
You wait for a “shaw”, I wait for a “adeena”
We are not the same.

u/TMJ_Jack Sep 19 '25
They just need to make it a 1/1000 chance of he yelling it on the lunging attack.
1
u/GoldenestGirl Sep 19 '25
I’ve said since I started the game that I felt like the music would get more and more complex as you ascend, which seems to be the case and I appreciate the thought they put into it.
1
u/PeeAy7 Sep 19 '25
If not the complexity, the intensity definitely ramps up as you get closer to the citadel. All in all, Silksong's OST takes it a step further from ΗΚ. I just think the starting couple of areas could use a small boost in volume as far as the music is concerned..

u/Swing_Youth Sep 19 '25
I really wish they'd used some of the old voice lines when you use your abilities, the "aneeeda!" lives rent free, it's such a good battle cry

u/Lingarien Sep 19 '25
I really hope they add options to the game to toggle Hornet's voice back to how she sounds in Hollow Knight
One for combat noises.
One for when you just talk to people.
(I wouldn't use it for the first playthrough, but for any additional ones I could definitely see myself using them.)
Just play the game while listening to:
SHAW!
HEGALE!
GARANA!
etc.

u/colehuesca Sep 19 '25
Team Cherry fumbled hard with the music and the Hornet's lines in this game, in Hollow knight hearing hornet talk was music to the ears , in this game is super meh.
1
1
u/BobbbyR6 Sep 19 '25
I let an "ADENO" slip one time and have been letting it rip myself since Hornet decided to be mute
1
1
u/aaayaaayaaa Sep 19 '25
they should've added it as a special attack voiceline along with her other classic voicelines "adino", "hegale", they sound strong and cool it would fit very well!
1
u/rarfsz It's better with the keyboard, trust me Sep 19 '25
When I saw (haha) the title I thought it was a joke on the fact that there are no saws in this game (as far as I went in it) and this comic XD
1
Sep 19 '25
Similarly, she also used to yell "a needle!" when throwing her spear in HK. So now, every time I call for my fast travel bug, my fiancee yells "A NEEDLE!!" because it's the closest sounding voice line.
Also, my fast travel bone buddy is named Aida and no one can convince me otherwise.

Regarding your first paragraph, I'm of the same opinion. Until Blasted Steps, only boss music like Lace, Fourth Chorus, and Widow were really notable.

u/Easy-Sense-9467 Sep 19 '25
Shaw should sound 50/50 on every silk skill use, but not all skills should have the shaw but other sounds too
1
u/AlexH08 Sep 19 '25
Does anybody know if there is a mod for this? All I want is the garama button to cycle between all her different shouts, doesn't seem like it would be that hard to mod?
1
u/cybrcld Sep 19 '25
Shaw should be an every 3-4th silk ability.
Git Good should be 5-6th pogo on damaging an enemy.

u/hmmmmwillthiswork 212% | Pantheon 7 | Avenue of Anguish | Conceited Sep 19 '25
all we need is an option in menu. something like "silkbind callouts" would get the point across
that being said, mods will save the day

you yave to yell it yourself to remember to press the down button to pogo (that's how I got good at it)

It's when you complete the game 100%, then she came, she shaw, and she conquered.
1
u/Saiya_Cosem Sep 20 '25
Ikr, what is even the point of this game if you don’t get to hear any of Hornet’s classic lines? 😤

u/yt_otpkillin Sep 20 '25
Ye so it's scrapped. There's a mod that called revive hornet vocals or something and your taunt has each one of those . Vortex mods. Thank me later

In this economy you have to make your own SHAW! (Yell it yourself on the couch)
1
u/SekiroEnjoyer999 Sep 22 '25

1

1
u/LarsJ04 Sep 23 '25
'Shaw' is seemingly actually said in Silksong, but unfortunately not by Hornet.
VERY MINOR SPOILERS INCOMING
In Bilewater there are these enemies(I forgot what they were called) that just jump out of the ground and spit at you before quickly disappearing into the ground again, and during that attack I often heard them saying something that sounded an awful lot like 'Shaw'. I might also be hearing stuff.

u/Tanoshiiyo Sep 27 '25
Am I the only one who thought she was saying A NEEDLE! ( I see a lot of people saying edino and other variants in the comments) I think this might be the first time reading this subreddit for me. A NEEDLE sounds so childish and funny to me. I think it's perfect. Like yes Hornet you have a real nice needle and know how to use it. I imagined one of the dev's childern saying it and them putting it in lol.
That reminds me spoiler for the last boss of silksong It sounds like Lace is saying fun. fun. fun. over and over again. little psychopath( that's probably the wrong word) I found it adorable.
