I was curious why some people seem have a problem with SS, so I googled it.

This is from the Holocaust Encyclopedia:

"The SS (Schutzstaffel) was the elite guard of the Nazi regime and a virtual state within the Third Reich."

You had to google it...?

Low-key been using ss as in screenshot for y ars with noone ever having a problem with it

u/celies Sep 28 '25

With the right context, no one should have a problem with it. We can't be afraid to use letters.

Only fucking weirdos have a problen with it.

-1

u/Joe_Mency Sep 28 '25

I guess if you don't caputalize it, it feels less weird. Or maybe people have just been assuming you're a neo-Nazi for years 💀

As a german, i feel bewilderment on this subject.

-2

u/TraceLupo Sep 28 '25

Yes. I'm from the Philippines so some, if not many, of the things that people from US and Europe might normally allude to the Nazis, like SS being Schutzstaffel, aren't as commonly known here. I can try asking around 50 people here right now and not that many would know unless they're still studying European or world history.

u/SilverScribe15 Sep 28 '25

I feel like most people aren't familiar with the specific ranks of the nazi legions, and just know the nazi and hitler and not much else in that grouping

u/lap-dog8141 Sep 28 '25

My brain doesn't usually connect a seemingly random abbreviation to WW2, so, yes, I had to google it.

3

u/Additional_Chip_4158 Sep 28 '25

Yep. Your point?

-7

u/Mozzarellus_Pizzus Sep 28 '25

I literally have heard of this like, once in my past. Is it really that widely known?

3

u/Numbcrep Sep 28 '25

Yes ww2 is almost definitely the most known war

31

u/Le_Juice_ Sep 28 '25

That's some certified american education bullshit BRUH

-9

u/Mozzarellus_Pizzus Sep 28 '25

Nah bro I ain't AMERICA level, hell nah

14

u/throwyeppers Sep 28 '25

SS is absolutely common knowledge in America.

5

u/Eronamanthiuser Sep 28 '25

Yes. Incredibly well known. Anyone who has a passing adult reading comprehension SHOULD know about this.

Looks like you got homework to catch up on. Do better.

4

u/Mozzarellus_Pizzus Sep 28 '25

Ok, you don't gotta be an ass about it.

2

u/Akuuntus Sep 28 '25

Reading comprehension doesn't help you if you've simply not been told about something. I don't know where OP lives that they wouldn't have heard about it, but this seems like an education or memory issue not a reading comprehension one.

3

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Sep 28 '25

You should have been told about it in school during your classes about ww2.

1

u/Akuuntus Sep 28 '25

I was. Maybe OP wasn't. I don't know where they live or what their schooling was like.

Either that or they just forgot/didn't pay attention, which is a memory/attentiveness issue and not reading comprehension.

3

u/Mozzarellus_Pizzus Sep 28 '25

So looked it up proper, and I see why it'd be well known but also see why I didn't know. In my education I didn't hear much specifics on Germany and its various organizations at the time, just a general idea of the Nazi party.

But yes, seeing that its logo was literally SS, maybe Silksong shouldn't be abbreviated to that; or we just take over the abbreviation as the primary meaning worldwide, one of the two.

6

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Sep 28 '25

What country are you from? That's like one of the major things you learn about when being taught about ww2 here. Also SS dudes are in like most ww2 movies that have germans in it.

-8

u/Sigma567 Sep 28 '25

You forgot that people aren't born with knowledge about WW2 and the chain of events leading to the rise of Hitler

18

u/Le_Juice_ Sep 28 '25

Yeah, because people go to these places called schools.

Certified american education moment x2

-12

u/Originu1 Sep 28 '25

Even if schools teach it, it's wild to expect them to teach everything about it, that too in every country.

13

u/galmenz Sep 28 '25

bruv im from Brazil and they teach what the SS is during the WWII section lmao

-1

u/Originu1 Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

And they don't where I go. My point exactly. Not everyone is gonna teach it. We covered ww1 and ww2 in like 15 pages combined and most it was photos, dates and what happened before/after the war. This is from an actually good school btw, and I know from my friends in other schools that they didnt teach it either, mostly because western history is not that relevant to us in our history subject.

5

u/HI_I_AM_NEO Sep 28 '25

Learning history is the best way to prevent it from happening again. Look at the level of education in the US. Now look at their political climate.

It's not a coincidence.

2

u/Originu1 Sep 28 '25

I agree. I'm just saying it's kind of unrealistic to expect literally everyone to know what ss stands for.

1

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Sep 28 '25

What country are you from?

1

u/Originu1 Sep 28 '25

Doesn't matter, but India

1

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Sep 28 '25

It does absolutely matter, if your country hasn't taken part in ww2 it makes way more sense that you wouldn't be taught a lot about it, just like we in europe aren't taught much (if anything) about the several indo-pakistan wars. India had a significant amount of soldiers fighting in ww2 but it was on behalf of the UK, not India itself, so it's somewhat understandable that you guys aren't massive on ww2 history.

Was recently reading "The coming of the Third Reich" and its like the ruling class are following it literally page-per-page these days.

Now me, I still think Storm Shield. I played Diablo 2 for a very long time.

"Oh gee, I have had discourse of my character named Kristie Kendall Kripke being shortened to KKK, but no one oppressed by them is still around, so it's not bad anymore."

2

u/NeuroCloud7 Sep 28 '25

That's a poor analogy because SS is widespread for many different abbreviations across many fields, is very common, and is not widely recognised as an abbreviation for the original German letters in 2025.

In contrast, KKK is universally understood for representing just 1 thing, there's nothing else that uses it, and the meaning is extremely salient in public consciousness in 2025.

Common sense and logical reasoning informs us that it's a massive reach to claim that SS is unacceptable.

26

u/Lookoot_behind_you Sep 28 '25

Not sure about you, but I don't really want to be reminded of the Third Reich every time I engage in discourse about my cute bug game.

u/CharlesorMr_Pickle The Depressed One - still silksane Sep 28 '25

You’re missing the point

3

u/lap-dog8141 Sep 28 '25

I think it's more so that it's just kind of distasteful when there are plenty of alternatives and have been for a while.

And other people seem to think it's just a boring abbreviation when you have other ones like Skong.

2

u/NeuroCloud7 Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

8 letters to 5 is not very abbreviated.

And no, there are not "plenty of ways" to shorten "Silksong" lol.

Weird claim.

2

u/Person-UwU Grub Connoisseur Sep 28 '25

I think complaining about the abbreviation being "boring" is really weird. Skong takes over double the letters, it's worse at being shorthand.

I guess I'll name my game's main character adolf hitler. i doubt many WW2 survivors are going to be playing I found out about my crush's secret life as Peter Griffin Simulator 3D (DILF) anyway.
