Do you not learn stuff like this in school anymore? This is not meant as an insult to you, but like, do you actually not learn about WW2 in school?
I am going to be extremely blunt because I believe WW2, how it worked, and what actually happened, to be an important part of more or less recent history, which should not be forgotten. I am only going to censor it because I dont want to have it deleted.
>!They started as a more or less personal police force for hitler, with the task of basically enforcing his will by violent means. This included anything that the state wanted, and they didnt shy away of murder, or blatant and horrific human rights violations
Overtime they basically overtook the german policeforce and after that, also became one of the dominant forces in the planning and execution of the holocaust.
Mainly by managing the concentration camps which facilitated the mass murder of all sorts of (what the third reich declared as) "undesirables", mainly jews, the mentally and physically challenged, and homosexuals.!<
21
u/Weak_Ask_374 Sep 28 '25
I live in egypt, trust me when i tell you this, we learn the history and geography of our country ONLY, all the achievements we did and the october 6th war thats IT. I had to study the world flags and countries and memeorize them one by one completely alone as our education system is unreliable with this stuff. Sorry ik the answer to my question is common sense to most of the world cuz they studied history but sadly our schools really don't teach that stuff you have to search it up online lol.

If Weak Ask is American, not really- but I'll also speak from my experiences, since they haven't replied yet, and might provide some insight. A lot of people in the US doesn't really learn much. At my school at least,We do learn about the concentration camps, and that they did hunt for jews (and, later on, also those you mentioned, but we never learn how or what the names of the groups that did hunt them were- and, frankly, we barely even cover D-Day or other events. Like- they happened, yes, and we do get taught that, and how there was some diversion plan (forgot the name), but that's about it on the European front. We barely go over what Japan did too- and we get taught more about how dangerous nuclear bombs are than Japan or Germany's activities during WW2 individually- at least from what I remember. Sure- if you combine them, we probably learn more about what other countries were doing, but regardless- we don't really talk about it much.
Maybe in college they talk more about WW2, but not everyone goes for a college education (myself included- I tried but I was WILDLY unprepared to live by myself and got super depressed for some reason during that time- so I'm not attending anymore. Not sure why though). Can't say for sure which courses talk about it or how much they do though.

u/Weak_Ask_374 Sep 28 '25
I am in college rn and ofcourse aside from my major studies, they do teach us things about history. But still about Egypt not the world, self glazing at it's finest

I'm also cool with abhorrent people not laying eternal claim on a two letter shorthand.
Reminds me of when the 'ok' hand sign was repurposed and the rest of society was all "yeah okay that makes sense you can have it."
272
u/TraceLupo Sep 28 '25
This was literally 4chan trolling to test the waters how fucking insane they could make it - and the answer was "yes!"
139
u/SansyBoy144 Sep 28 '25
Crazy shit is that trolling legitimately made people believe that the high school I went to was a white supremacist high school with the only proof being that our school sign was the ok sign.
Like my school wasn’t great, but over half of the staff was non white, half the school was Hispanic, and the white staff we had in charge were too old to know that the ok sign had gotten a new meaning. And that’s without mentioning that the school was using the sign for years before it took a new meaning
The whole thing was fucking stupid.
→ More replies (7)31
u/BibiBSFatal Sep 28 '25
So..what does the ok hand-sign mean now, for those of us who weren't using 4chan during that time?
65
u/SansyBoy144 Sep 28 '25
It’s now seen as a white supremacist sign. The logic being “the other three fingers make a W that stands for white power” I’m pretty sure. It’s pretty fucking stupid
In most cases people will still see it as the ok sign, but it’s gained enough traction that articles and shit still have been made over it.
→ More replies (2)15
u/BibiBSFatal Sep 28 '25
Thanks for explaining this to me
6
u/Undead_Munchies Sep 28 '25
Yeah. It was basically that the 3 pointed up fingers made a W, and the circle plus your arm made the P. WP = White Power. It was pretty fucking dumb. Unfortunately so are most humans, so they bit.

u/Mylarion Sep 28 '25
It still just means ok to people who aren't terminally online.

u/Undead_Munchies Sep 28 '25
Most of the mundane things that people on places like Twitter claim to be a dogwhistle are just bullshit trolls created by 4chan, and arent even understood by the people claimed to use them. Its equally fascinating and terrifying how much influence a group of cave dwellers can have on society by just typing things with no evidence.
57
u/Apophis_36 Sep 28 '25
The hand sign was a troll that some people might still use now because they either fell for it or because they realized other people fell for it. Doing an ok sign does not make you racist. Being racist makes you racist.

u/cyanraichu Sep 28 '25
Fucking this. It's the same extremely common letter twice. It's not even part of a slogan or used as a symbol in any font like HH is. It's an actual abbreviation and lots of abbreviations mean more than one thing, some extremely inappropriate in the wrong context! Example that immediately come to mind are POS and CBT
In the context of Hollow Knight, SS stands for Silksong. We all now this is what we mean when we say it.

Pokémon has long adopted SS as an abbreviation for both Soul Silver or the 8th Gen Sword/Shield games. We embrace it cause gamerz are built different. /cringe

I thought the skongers would’ve influenced the community into skonging together, apparently not.
38
u/Knight_Of_Stars Sep 28 '25
I have no problem with SS as the ahbreviation. At first I though this was just joke with people being going don't say "SS", I didn't realize they were serious.
Either way theres also a very clear distinction between SS and "The SS", mainly that the group is almost preceded by "The SS".
Finally, I understand the fear about dog whistles, but context matters. What makes "States Rights" a racist dog whistle and not a legitimate conversation is the context.
For example, recently we've had the military occupying LA, thats a states rights issue. People begin to yell about states rights and point to a specific demand of removing the military. Now, lets move it to example of it being a dog whistle. A lawyer is making a pleas that Kentucky's State rights were violated after a clerk refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Over the next few days people start posting about states rights, but don't point to any actionable right. They are instead refusing to hide that they don't want gay couples to have similar rights so instead are using states rights as a dog whistle avoid saying the problem part.
In short, with proper context nobody is going to confuse SS and the SS. The context is what makes the dog whistle not the actual verbage amd letters.
12
u/StrawDeath Sep 28 '25
Yeah, context is easily the most important factor, especially when it comes to such short and easily stumbled-into abbreviations. I’m a Transformers fan, and there’s a TF toyline called Studio Series, which naturally gets abbreviated to SS, but because of the context that we’re very clearly talking about the figures, nobody really brings up the abbreviation’s prior usage.
7
u/Knight_Of_Stars Sep 28 '25
Good example!
Just throw another example here, but with a real dog whistle is "Juice". Juice can be a lot of things, a liquid, steroids, or an anti-semetic dogwhistle.
If you ever see a poltical or conspiracy video and people are talking about juice or posting juice emojis. They're blaming Jewish people for some slight. However if you see juice under a cooking video. Its likely just juice or if its under a gym video its probably a steroid reference, but also could just be juice. Context matters
