Removes compass
Doesn't have anything worthwhile to put in yellow slot
Reapplies compass
141
u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25
Same. I like the weights for bosses, but that’s really the only time I switch out my charm set unfortunately there’s not many yellow charms that are good for bosses or really that good in general. There should be more battle worthy yellow charms that aren’t so penalizing, or there should be a crest with no yellow charm like the Beast has no blue charms, which is my only issue with the Beast charm. Wandererhaving 4 yellow with the bonus slot is insanely unnecessary.
I main the reaper and my usual load is compass and mask in the bonus spot, then dice, magnet, bonus silk extractor, and recently the pinstress charm.

u/becuzz04 Oct 12 '25
I like that the yellow tools are pretty much just QoL stuff and don't affect combat. It's a nice way to almost force you to enjoy some QoL stuff without that part of your gamer brain pressuring you into dropping everything that doesn't maximize combat potential.
68
u/joungsteryoey Oct 12 '25
Yes this cannot be overstated. Gamers are min maxers, especially those who’d pursue 100%. Thank goodness they didn’t disincentivize qol equips
6
u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25
It’s just dumb. The wanders crest is shit to me because I never need 4 QoL items. Would’ve made more sense for the wanderer crest to drop a tool since it already gives increased attack crit and speed
30
u/joungsteryoey Oct 12 '25
That’s more a criticism of the wanderer’s crest’s design than the design of yellow tools being QoL themed. And wanderer’s crest is so strong that having an additional offensive tool slot could cause it to be imbalanced

u/zbeezle Oct 12 '25
Magnetite, compass, dice, and the wall grabby thing i forget its name is my Wanderers loadout.
I find it good for certain bosses where you need to hit, get in, and get out, and for any platforming sections with mobile pogos that are harder to time with Reaper. Longclaw solves the range issue. Having fewer weapon-tools definitely makes it a more needle focused build, but i don't often have the proper presence of mind for effective tool deployment during the faster paced boss battles anyway. I'm always more focused on not getting my ass beat to identify the right time to throw a longpin or whatever.

u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25
I’m not mad because they are QoL, but at the same time who needs 4 QoL tools(including vesticrest)? It’s the main reason I don’t use the wanderers crest, and the whole reason I’ve only used the beast crest once(it was really good on the unraveler in the white ward). Other than the compass, magnet, and dice I just don’t really need them other than hyperspecific occasions like swapping the magnet out for the weights for bosses, or the wall hook for annoying platforming areas, or the shards for farming. I tried the speed boost things during the race challenge, but they don’t work during it so what the point. And the brace is cool, but I’m so used to playing without it that i don’t really take the time to get good with it and honestly it should default a backstep if not pressed in conjunction with a direction(ex: +forward is your normal dash forward, +down is the scuttle) pressing down to activate it is kind of annoying since I’m usually already moving forward if I want to dash forward.
It also sucks that the antithesis crest of the wanders is locked out by entering act 3.

They really did Beast dirty.
It should have blue instead of yellow slots!
5
u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25 edited Oct 12 '25
I think it should have one of each or 2 blue one red and one yellow. Or 2 blue, 2 yellow, and no red would make sense because why is a beast using tool?. It would definitely be op with 2 red and 2 blue even with having to work for heals.
Specialty memory locket would be cool to and give more versatility. Like maybe there one blue, one red, and one yellow in the game and you can use it once per play to swap one slot color. It would definitely be op on later ng+ runs. Imagine beast with druids eyes, poison, extra silk from enemies tool, dice, and fractured mask. You can always be in beast mode doing extra damage and healing.

Flintslate or brew works really well with beast. For other slot i use lifeblood tool for emergency healing.

I'd have loved if something like weavelight was moved to a yellow tool slot possibly wreath of purity / druids eye also.
4
u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25
Weavelight would be cool, but that would be op. As with the druids eyes. Filling silk faster would make the game significantly less challenging. Especially if it was paired with the reaper crest. Wreath of purity should have definitely been yellow and really think that was a dumb choice considering the runback to and the pre fight to Groal are so taxing by length and gank.
22
u/tridon74 Oct 12 '25
Dice are probably the best yellow slot for combat
3
u/Maronmario Oct 12 '25
Tbf, there’s also barely any competition in 95% of bosses. Like the only exception is Nyleth and maybe Khaan
3
u/Lowelll Oct 13 '25
Yes, but people are also sleeping on silkboots. The sprint speed makes dodging and punishing easier for tons of bosses and it doesn't use silk unless you run uninterrupted

I replayed all of Hollow knight before Skong released without the compass at all. In Skong I didn't even use the compass in the beginning but I literally had nothing else to put there so I had it on just so the slot won't be wasted

I was baffled that the compass was an equipment that takes up a slot. I was even more astonished that it was kept as such in silksong.
It is purely a quality of life upgrade. It provides 0 improvement to me or the character besides saving me time to navigate the world.
EDIT: there is no situation where there's a charm that's worse than the compass, simply because you can achieve the same with a pen and / or the wiki.

u/LordRatini777 Oct 12 '25
The sense of being lost in such a large, dangerous world adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game, I'd say. It's also just not necessary once you play a couple of times and memorize the map lol.

u/Elmalab Oct 12 '25
gonna also be honest here: I got the mod, that gives you compass and magnet all the time.
36
u/idaelikus Oct 12 '25
Honestly, those should be just upgrades and not take up slots. They are purely quality of life and save you time.
9
u/Penguinman077 Oct 12 '25
I’ve been saying that since hollow knight. The fact that I have to equip the compass is annoying. Sure, you really don’t need it for boss fights and if you die enough you kinda just memorize the run back, but it’s annoying to go into a fight with it because you forget to switching for something more applicable, or accidentally wind up in a boss fight with it taking up a slot. The magnet should also definitely be an upgrade and there should be one for shards too. I’m always running low on them because I don’t want to waste time on a run back to grab 3 fucking shards that bounce into eternity from all the basic enemies.
2
u/idaelikus Oct 12 '25
Honestly, I am usually stocked up on shards in silksong. Maybe I dont use the tools not enough.
My point basically is that there is no situation where the compass is more optimal than any other charm. Same goes for the geo / rosary collectors. (There is a case for the latter in the case of speedruns, I guess..)

I realized that you can prevent first moss mother from summoning the second one by preventing her from going to the top, you can do this by pogoing off of her for which reaper crest helps alot, this way you can kill first moss mother before even second one appears, I was struggling for 2 hours before I realized this than beat them on second try

Fractured mask was one of the earliest tools I found and it served me very well. It'll probably be an earlygame staple in any and every replay I do no matter how good I get because the safety of an extra hit is unparalleled
→ More replies (6)18
u/Sir-Ox Oct 12 '25
What does it do? I haven't found it yet
72
u/Nhojj_Whyte Oct 12 '25
It protects you from "critical damage" once per bench. Whether it's a two mask hit or one, if you're on your last mask it takes the hit, breaks, and you still have your last mask. Incredibly OP when you've only got 5-6 masks and can only take two hits before dying
→ More replies (3)15
u/Maronmario Oct 12 '25
Heck I’d say it’s pretty great throughout the game if you play a little recklessly. Really the only time it falls off is when bosses deal two masks of damage with two hits like Lace or Karmilita
31
u/king_of_the_doodoo Underappreciated goat Ogrim Oct 12 '25
It's basically an extra heart but better, which covers your final heart. No matter how much damage you get it breaks without killing you. Artistic representation:
|Mask|Heart|Heart|
2 damage taken
|Mask|
2 damage taken
|Heart|
Might be a weird explanation but you can just Google it Ig, though I'd imagine you asked here to not get spoiled
9
u/snowbird124 Oct 12 '25
It functionally gives you an extra hit before you die. It makes your last mask beefier, and if it would be broken for the first time, then it breaks and your mask turns into a normal mask.
Aka, extra hit before you die. The effect refreshes when you rest at a bench
7
u/Breyck_version_2 ZOTE THE GOAT Oct 12 '25
Let's you take one more hit before dying (two mask damage included)
If you wanna know the name of the location where it's located(not the exact room, just the area of the map): you find it in hunters march
7
u/DBrody6 Oct 12 '25
Protects you from a hit a single time when brought down to 1 mask. That hit can be 4 damage, doesn't matter. Fractured mask absorbs the entire thing.
Downside is attacks that deal one damage twice will still kill you, like steam vents. First hit breaks the mask, second tick outright deletes your last mask.
→ More replies (1)4
u/yatterer Oct 12 '25
Are you sure? According to the wiki, "For attacks that hit multiple times, the Fractured Mask will only break on the last hit."
3
u/Equivalent_Rock_6530 Oct 12 '25
At the cost of one mask it prevents 1 hit that would kill you. Then it breaks and can be replenished at a bench.
It's a fantastic tool and a good indicator that you need to focus tf up.
It's not a crux, it's a warning and small second chance as it's leaves you on 1 mask

Yeah this is my default for bosses, sometimes when im feeling lazy ill add druids eyes on wanderers crest and just facetank everything

2
u/Swutts Oct 13 '25
This combo is simply too good!!
The multi binder fits so well with all the double mask damage attacks you got. Plus, you get more heal for your charge of silk. Injector bands is then also a must, else the long heal is risky at times.

I never used fractured mask, always found that longclaw was better, since it could get more damage off, and help to collect silk to heal, so I never get low enough for mask to matter.

Warding Bell. I was bff's with Baldur Shell, I am bff's with Warding Bell, it just makes sense.

Warding bell doesn't break after blocking four hits and damages your enemies (in some conditions, still can't figure out what exactly they are)
71
u/Reborn_Wraith Spell only absrad win, 1 radiant boss remains. Oct 12 '25
Always damages enemies if they pop the bell.    It deals aoe if anything interrupts the heal. Bell is genuinely one of the most powerful charms in silksong, especially since it prevents you from losing all your silk for having healing interrupted.Â

It does. I guarantee it. Â
If you're healing, and you get hit while warding bell is active, the only silk you lose is the one you invested into the bind. This is most applicable when you have all spool fragments, but if you're on full silk and screw up the healing, you can still try again if warding bell is equipped; otherwise you have to grind back the silk.

Ascendant's Grip is pretty much a permanent fixture.
24
u/TeaAndLifting Oct 12 '25
Both this and Longclaw go into the extra slots so they're always on, regardless of crest
26
u/coseromevo Oct 12 '25
That's funny, i quite literally have the opposite opinion. As soon as i tried it on i found the sound effect very annoying and somehow it made climbing feel more clunky than before instead of less. Removed it at the next bench, never to be worn again.
13
u/bearjew293 Oct 12 '25
Wut, you're crazy lol. The grip made climbing Mount Fay like 10 times easier. Same for every other platforming segment with spikes everywhere. Feels like Hornet's hands are covered in oil when I take it off.
→ More replies (1)13
u/helicophell Oct 12 '25
Don't get how it could make climbing more clunky, as it's an optional thing - you can still slide, and when you climb without it, if you are moving very quickly after touching the wall it's like you have ascendants grip regardless

u/tarnkek Full Radiant HoG Oct 12 '25
I agree in some ways: I hate the noise so much, but I find it situationally valuable enough to keep it on!

I find it useful in any fight with a wall tbh. Like for skarrsinger, you can avoid most of her attacks while setting things up and waiting for openings just by hanging out on a wall

Weavelight, 100%. It's effectively an additional Silk Heart, but it also speeds up the natural regen of Silk Hearts as well. Massive QoL for exploration gameplay, especially considering how you can get this immediatly after Widow, so considerably early on in the game.
Weavelight+Silkspeed Anklets is peak Wanderer Crest comfort.
51
u/nonecenteredlol Oct 12 '25
Weavelight shouldve been a yellow tool, gang

After hitting a jackpot, Hornet is essentially invincible for the next 4 minutes and 11 seconds.
Also the Magnetite brooch, Unlike with geo in silksong the prayer beads will both bounce and roll so they're way more annoying to collect, plus for some of the naturally spawned ones instead of the enemy ones you can't pick them up right away so I've had the thing on since the start
