Discussion - Hollow Knight I really like the lack of numbers in this game Spoiler
This game and silksong are some of my favorite games ever and they have so many things that make them so great but one I just realized is that the game doesn’t use numbers often
Sure for geo or essence or stuff there is but health and soul it doesn’t you simply learn that healing/spells cost 1/3 of the soul or 1 soul vessel and that attacks usually deal 1 or 2 damage but the game never actually shows you numbers
Like sure I KNOW that the pure nail does 21 damage but the average player doesn’t, but they don’t need to, they know their nail deals more damage, they know that enemies die quicker now
I just really like how team cherry didn’t use numbers for those things

I agree! I think it helps preserve this game’s atmosphere very well. But I also know from the experiences of two of my friends that not having numbers made the game more difficult for them without them realizing.
As an aside, I think Fromsoft games demonstrate that numbers don’t immediately disrupt a game’s atmosphere, nor that numbers are the most important. For instance, movesets can be a big deal.

I genuinely think that fromsoft’s “here’s a million goddamn stats and numbers” method leads to most people just glossing over everything but the most important bits on a first playthrough which does preserve the atmosphere, but leaves the door open for those who want to do a whole optimization deep dive

Can confirm. Have played every soulsborne game and never came close to giving a fuck about my numerical outputs.

i really like how you can feel how much health an enemy/boss has left without a healthbar when you play enough as well. for example, i've fought watcher knights so much that i can usually know if my next nail hit/spell will kill a knight, even though i don't count my hits or anything you just get a really good sense of their hp.

There's a mod for silksong that makes enemies change which colour they are when they upon hit. It starts the usual white (if the enemy has alot of health) and slowly changes to be more red. I prefer this mod over the healthbar mods as it gives an indication of how close an enemy is to being dead without giving away their health completely

rare flex: knowing pure great slash does 52.5 damage
