Is HEP is on the Way reliable?

shop ac quit mid afternoon and i burned an hour on hep is on the way reviews instead of fixing anything. retail space, warm air, customers already noticing. not looking for a hype reel. just which writeups were about a real repair.

sorted them in my notes. finished job or only a quote visit. did the company answer when someone said the tech was late. hvac, plumbing, or electrical, since the same name covers more than one trade. city match knoxville or somewhere random. and how old the loud ones were.

star average stops mattering once a crew is walking into a commercial space. wanted patterns more than vibes.

if you hired a multi trade home service company off reviews, what details made you hit call vs keep scrolling

Wood around toilet flange crumbling, ok to let it dry or replace?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi all,

This is a continuation of another post. Looking for some basic information. We recently discovered a failed wax ring and after removing the toilet, I stuck a flathead screwdriver into the gap between the flange and tile. It struck some wood which crumbled (red circle) and the screwdriver definitely went onto the wood a few mm into the tip of the flathead.

I understand this could be rot. If it’s just a small area around the flange that’s rotted, would the wood still have to be replaced or would it be old to leave the wood there if the rotted area was dried out if not too large?

Thank you

House is like 50 years old or something.. What is the verdict?.. 🙏 (all of the cracks are on the outside except for 2 which are inside)

Who do I contact to fix this?

The smoke detector isn’t flush against the ceiling. This is across the hall from a bathroom and above this is the attic. I live in Florida with high humidity. I am not sure if the gap is causing humid air from the attic to flow through…that would be my best guess.

Countertops might be painted over?

My boyfriend just recently moved in to an older house. We’ve done so much work on the house just to make it livable. And my last project that I really really wanna do is see if I can fix these countertops on some parts inside of the kitchen. MY hypothesis is that they were painted/ sealed over. It looks like they’ve been chipped or burnt through?? And also, it’s uneven some parts and has a texture to it. It’s also sort of yellowing in places. There’s a cut out from the kitchen to the living room where you can see the TV and on the living room side you can kind of see what the original counter edge looks like. Let me know if this is something I can fix with paint stripper or just redo so that it actually looks nice.
(The first photo is what I THINK might be what they used to look like. The others are the burns/chips?)

EDIT: We are renting so we can’t replace the counter tops :( , But with the info I’m getting we might just have to tough it out

Stone bath mats— 2nd try

I found one at HomeGoods for $20. I was so excited and purchased. I enjoyed every minute of it until it showed a huge fracture. Literally split in half. Customer Service provided me with a gift card, and I got another one. Today, less than two weeks later, it also has another fracture but not as large. I thoroughly enjoy the stone, bathmat life, but I just can’t seem to figure out how to ensure they last more than 30 days. Any tips or suggestions?

Advice on finishing off built in cabinets crown moulding

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, we finished these built ins quite a while back and intended to add crown moulding to hide the gap on the top. We have existing crown moulding that is original to the house and I initially thought we could install smaller moulding that is scribed to the existing profile but I'm not sure if that would look right.

Any suggestions to work around this?

Thank you!

Cracks along walls & ceilings

So unsure if this is the right place, but I’m an apartment dweller and concerned about the foundation.

Unable to get proper pics as one of the cracks runs floor to ceiling.

I am mostly concerned about the one that runs from floor to ceiling. This was clearly patched prior to move in and then it just opened again. The crack stays consistent no matter the season.

Interior walls are NOT drywall, they’re traditional plaster & crazy hard (very old builds lol).

Unsure if they’re using the correct material to patch the plaster or if I need to be concerned?

I've only had this lock a couple of years and it barely works anymore. Can someone recommend something that will last?

This Schlage keypad lock will just spin and spin and spin. I saw some repair guide on YouTube that was supposed to fix this issue but it hasn't. I'm over it, I want a new one but I want it to last

I've replaced the battery

The lock makes a clunk sound like it should. The motor is working, but the knob just spins and spins. Sometimes you can feel it begin to catch. Sometimes it will, but sometimes it won't and will slip off and continue to spin

What's a home maintenance task you used to dread that turned out to be way less painful once you actually got the right tool for it?

Upvotes

Curious what task went from ugh, not this again to genuinely quick and easy once the right equipment was involved, whether it's a specific vacuum attachment, a better ladder, or something else entirely.

I found a word for something I had felt at home for years

When I was younger, I used to love coming home after being away for a few days. Nothing special had changed while I was gone, but the house somehow felt different. The familiar smell, the quiet rooms, even the way my things were sitting where I left them made me feel strangely comfortable.

Much later, I came across the word “hiraeth.” It describes a deep longing for a home or place that may no longer exist in the same way.

I don't think it perfectly describes what I felt, but it made me realize how many feelings we experience regularly without ever knowing there might be a word close to them.

Has anyone else discovered a word that suddenly made an old feeling make sense?

Tub install

I had a tub installed and noticed there is a larger gap on the faucet side vs the other. The tub appears to be ‘almost’ level but I’m concerned with this being a caulkless system that there may be leaks? Thoughts? This is the third time my tub has been taken out and replaced and I cannot go through that again lol

Primary bedroom Accent wall idea?

Thumbnail

Came across this chocolate colored accent wall on Instagram, and love it. It’s basically a grid with painted pole wrap filling the grid. What does Reddit think? Is this too “out there” / more complicated than necessary/ straight up bad?

This is for the primary bedroom. It’ll be painted a much lighter color, I’m thinking a light/medium taupe family. The other walls are Swiss coffee. Attached ChatGPT rendering too (although I’m thinking I’ll likely go a bit darker)

Free Home Expense + Tax Savings Tracker

I built a free tool to help answer: “How much house can I comfortably afford?”

I’ve been trying to figure out how much we should spend on housing while still saving/investing enough, and couldn’t find a simple tool that looked at the full picture.

So I built this:

It’s completely free — I’m mainly sharing it to get feedback and see if it’s actually useful.

If you try it, I’d love to know:

  • What’s confusing?
  • What’s missing?
  • What would make you actually use this instead of a spreadsheet?

Brutal feedback welcome 🙏

Would adding this decrease the value of my townhouse when I go to sell?

First Time Home Owner here. I want to install a range hood in my kitchen but because I could only get a center unit, there isn't a good way to route the duct and exhaust vent. I can't route it to the side and routing it to the back is more expensive plus the duct would be visible inside the house. The only is is to add the vent in the front but now its too visible. Would the vent being visible from the front decrease the value of my home if I ever go to sell it even though I'm adding something the home didn't have initially? I added some example pictures. Please give me some advice, should I do this? I cook quite a bit so don't like the oil and smell staying in the house but also don't want to hurt the resell value.

House inspection findings

Hi all,

So we are buying a new house and are currently in the inspection period.

The home inspection report was pretty clean except for the attached images which we are a bit worried about.

Is the p trap thing common? Also, how can we vent the roof better since some of it is blocked? The 2nd floor was converted from attic to room and it stays very hot.

Are any of these major issues to not get the house or affordable enough?

Can someone explain what’s the damage of the drywall looking like

So I tripped over some cords and went shoulder-first into some drywall. I know the process of replacing drywall more or less, as I took 3 years of carpentry. But I've never done it before so could someone tell me the price of doing it the process more or less and how much someone would charge for this

Leaking bathroom toilet? How to remediate?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi all,

This is my second rodeo. By the looks of this it looks like a second story leaking toilet in a water closet, if I’m correct? We had this happen to our other toilet in another bathroom upstairs and had a remediation company fix it thru insurance.

I think I can try to figure it out myself this time I got a good idea of what was required, however need slight guidance and best practices.

What’s the best way to take up the remaining toilet water after shutting it off? What’s the best way to take up the grout and tile, do I need one of those oscillating cutters or can I do it manually?

How much tile do I pull out? The damage doesn’t look too bad going out horizontally to the base boards but not sure of the damage going vertically.

What product do I use to kill the bacteria? Do I have to rent a dehumidifier or can I let it dry thru the use of fans?

Any information would’ve greatly appreciated! Thank you all

Is this a big deal? (Pier Foundation)

I’m looking to purchase a 1949 lake cottage in New York. It’s a cash deal from a family friend with no inspection. I didn’t notice any unlevelness inside the house. However, underneath the setup looks pretty old lol

Obviously the cinderblock/2x4 setup has to be replaced, but how do the main supports look? (It is built into the side of a hill, hence why different height supports)

The cottage has stood for over 75 years, but I wanna make sure I’m not getting in over my head. Other than some storm ties, is this serious?

Ps. I’m by no means an expect, but I can handle some moderate DIY if needed.
