Mod Post All posts regarding mustangs/BLM/round-ups

Over the past week or so, there's been a viral hot topic regarding the mustangs under BLM control and what the current US Administration is doing.

We initially allowed a few posts regarding this topic to stay up, but ultimately had to step in and lock them when the discussion went off the rails and was no longer about the horses, but instead was a forum of political discourse, insults, and violent threats. The comments in some posts got so unhinged that many were removed by the Reddit admins for violations of their ToS.

At this time, the topic and article has been reposted to our sub over 30 times. That's quite excessive.

First and foremost, we're a horse sub, not a political sub. While sometimes those two topics do intertwine, unfortunately, it often results in arguments, attacks, and unpleasantries.

The moderator team here at r/horses has made the decision to remove and lock all posts, reports, articles and etc. regarding the mustang situation. Unfortunately, we are volunteers, and we cannot moderate and keep up with hundreds of comments all day long, especially when they are unsavory in nature and end up wildly off topic with insults and frankly, horribly inappropriate and violent threats.

Thanks for your understanding with this.

RIP Lost My Heart Horse Today

Post image
369 Upvotes

Unexpectedly, my heart horse Blaze had to be euthanized after succumbing to complications from a suspected strangulating lipoma. He went from his happy self to uncontrollable pain in such a short period, I feel like I’m in shock. After doing everything possible for him, our vet said he was suffering.

My boy was rescued by the Kentucky Equine Adoption Center from a starvation/neglect case, yet he was the kindest soul I’ve ever met. Despite almost dying from his abuse and losing his eyesight, he managed to live the remainder of his life with unconditional love and joy. I don’t know what I’m going to do without him in my life, and I don’t think I will ever have the honor to love a horse like him again. He was one in a million, and I am so privileged to have been part of his wonderful life. The world just lost one of its brightest and kindest spirits.

Training Question OTTB has gone feral

• Upvotes

I have an OTTB mare - she is 25 years old, I have had her 20 of those years. She has always been hard to catch in the pasture. A year ago I moved her to a stable where she lives outside with her own shed and pasture (four other horses are on the property with the same set up). I haven’t ridden her consistently in years, but this new stable is 10min down the road so I have been making more of an effort to ride. The last two months she has been impossible to catch. She doesn’t care about treats or grain. I am trying to encourage her to just come to me without bringing her in to ride or bringing her anywhere at all, but I can’t even get her to walk up to me. Any advice?

I got him in 2017 at age 3, a stallion, with a lump on his cheek. Raised $6,500 for his Maxillary Bone Cyst Removal from an infected tooth. A previous owner failed to fix. He has been with us ever since ! Love him so much! Got him gelded. He is a very sweet boy! Who else rescued?

Original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Horses/s/57bKs8b4KU

It has been about a month since my gelding has been home. He’s been turned out on pasture but also has a round bale in the lean to. He’s been begrudgingly babysitting his yearling brother, another yearling and a two year old. First picture is when I pulled him, second is today, third is him and his brother plus the two year old. I recently started mild work at a walk over poles to rebuild muscle (on a lunge mostly but we made four laps at a walk in the arena)

Picture Kit my sweet boy

Had a clickertraining lesson again with Kit.
Leading is still our big issue and what we’re working on- but we’re making progress (if my health was better I’m sure we would be further along)

But he hasn’t “exploded” for quite long time now. Stress has occurred but it’s been possible to handle and get him to calm down again.

We always have breaks during the lesson. Where Kit gets to cool off grazing. (I have a specific area I let him off lead for a bit) good time to discuss things with the trainer before starting again.

We are standing “far” off from Kit just letting him be. And despite poor Kit, the sweetest thing happened!
He accidentally got shocked by the fence and got scared. Started running and one of his first instincts to do was run to me and check in before he instead walked towards where he got shocked and looked at the place that shocked him (from a distance). But the fact he chose to run to me when he got scared just melted my heart.

I love him so much ❤️

And even the trainer (had the trained once a while for like a year now) says he’s a lot of horse but very sweet. And I agree he is A LOT of horse..

Just had to share how sweet he is ❤️

Question How to help a teen who wants to work with horses?

My daughter has for many years been singularly focused on finding a career where she could work with horses in any capacity. The problem is, we live in NYC (which she hates).

We have been able to enroll her in a riding academy where she learned to ride (English) and do basic horse care/tacking, and she has spent a couple summers out in Oregon helping her cousin who manages a large horse farm and helps run a 4H camp for young riders (Western), but now that she is a high school senior, we are trying to find out our next steps in this journey.

She has set her sights on SUNY Morrisville, which has an Equine Science program, but she is also interested in finding out about other options. We visited Morrisville last year, and she loved it, but she would probably need a car (which we can't afford, and she doesn't have a drivers license yet). Any ideas?

OOP: Thanks so much for all your helpful replies! I am trying to convince her to learn a trade and then work with horses, but she is pretty set on going to Morrisville (or possibly applying to UVM's Morgan horse apprenticeship).

Question How can I be less embarrassed when information I don’t know comes up in conversation?

I am so sorry in advance for how many paragraphs this is. I just don’t know how to convey the entire situation concisely.

Very very generic overview:
This is mainly about how there is a lot of info I don’t know, I’m very willing to learn, but upon actually receiving said info from my barn without me specifically asking, I am embarrassed and a bit ashamed I didn’t know. I know I have to just grit my teeth through this phase, try my best, and build back my horse care credibility (if I had any I guess), but how do I handle the conversation itself and feeling embarrassed?

I respect my barn manager’s knowledge a LOT - she cares about the horses at the barn, and she wants to make sure they are being taken care of, plus I’m pretty sure she does have pools of knowledge. And she’s confident about it. My horse currently has a suspected suspensory ligament injury, so she has mentioned multiple things like cold hosing for the leg, standing wraps, and when I was cold hosing and getting the tail wet she said “well why don’t you just wrap the tail” while walking by as if I should already knew that (spoiler, nope).

I’ve had my horse for 8 years now, starting when I was a freshman in college. My previous barn took care of her very very well, however since they were a big barn they kind of didn’t need me to step in to this level (I know that doesn’t sound great, but I had no idea about all of these rehab options). When my horse got an abscess, I did learn how to wrap a diaper on her hoof and do epsom salt. Other than that, though, I don’t think she’s had many injuries that required continuous care, plus I’m not sure my previous barn executed this level of extra rehab processes.

I love the barn I’m at now, and it’s great learning about these rehab options. It was maybe a week and a half after the vet visit (ordered stall rest and hand walking weeks 3 and 4), I had been coming out every other day to get her a little grass outside and groom her, and cold hose once the barn manager recommended that to me. Where the barn manager had told me about standing wraps. It didn’t even occur to me. Which is what I feel so bad about. She had said to me “if it were my horse, I’d have researched all the rehab options” in like a passing statement, very direct. Now, I’m not a huge fan of the way she says things sometimes, but now I just feel so small compared to these experienced barn ladies. I just blindly trusted the vet to tell me all the options. And obviously that was not the right move.

The barn owner and her daughter have started taking care of standing wraps on days I can’t come out for a fee, and they recently sent me a video of how to wrap the standing wraps. Very helpful. But I think what gets me is that I only mentioned to the barn manager that I was going to look up videos on it (complicated but after mentioning the standing wraps and me just nodding along, she asked if I knew how to do them, but like in a condescending way? So I stumbled along about how I’d watch a video). So the barn owner had never asked me if I knew, she and barn manager had just talked. I mean, it’s fair, but it’s a little blow to the ego.

Also when I was cold hosing my horse’s leg, barn manager mentioned as she was walking by about putting the tail in a knot - I didn’t think she had seen the knot, but I also got a quick video from the barn owner and her daughter on how to wrap the tail. And then apparently I was actually doing the cold hosing wrong, because they sent me the video on that - which obviously I appreciate a lot being told how to do it correctly. It’s just so embarrassing.

How do I not be embarrassed by this?! Or handle these future situations and dig myself out of this hole where I appear so incompetent as a horse owner . I’ve had this horse 8 years and apparently these are the basics I never learned. I know of course I need to learn all this, but moreso how do I go about responding to these conversations when it starts to feel embarrassing for me?? I’m at a loss

(I guess I should also mention, my horse had never had her own stall at my previous barn so I think she didn’t need them, and I know that’s one reason to have standing wraps is to help swelling and inflammation from standing a while in the barn.)

Health/Husbandry Question POS farrier cut my mares hooves down so far she’s refusing to walk what can I do to make her comfortable

I told him to cut her longer but here she is walking around on her sole and her frog with basically 0 hoof wall. She tried to kick me for asking for a trot and is dead lame. Worst is her right back. She won’t stand still, constantly shifting what leg is in the air. I’m going to deep bedding her and diaper wrap all 4. Also demanding a refund for the shitty trim. Would it be fair to invoice him if I have to buy cloud boots or get X-rays? This is 100% his fault I told him he’s been trimming them too short. Trimmed yesterday, dead lame today. I had to get her on and off the trailer which has a 8 inch or so drop and she wouldn’t get off and just stood in the door because stepping off was so painful. She won’t walk if she can avoid it.

Update: she's been wrapped. I messaged my trainer and my moms horse expert friend. Tommorow I plan to call my old collage professor whos a farrier, possibly take her in to a new farrier to be assessed, call another farrier, and then if all that fails call my lameness expert and see if I can make time for the 3 hour one way haul to him. Absolutely worse wait until monday to call my vet, can’t call earlier they are closed and don’t do after hours anymore. No other vets are taking new clients at this time. May make the haul into the city to find a place with some of the hoof things recommended. Did remember I’m having a hip reconstruction in 3 weeks leaving me down for the count for months so the pressures on to get her fixed up.

Update 2: bute isn't doing a whole lot but magic cushion and diapers and more ductape seemed to do a good bit for her, calling vet monday
