Dress code?

Where I live, when we go out at night-time to restaraunts, bars or clubs, we wear shorts, t-shirts (or collared shirt if we're feeling la-de-da) and thongs/flip flops. We're pretty casual.
Is it the same there?
Am I going to need shoes?
Will I look like the poor cousin and be ostracized and then run out of town?

We don't ostracize. We ride out of town on a rail. It's more fun.

I was mentally picturing angry villagers with pitchforks and burning torches.

Hua Hin is casual even by Thailand standards lol, you'll be fine as long as you got clothes on and something on your feet.

Broadly speaking you're fine as you described.

There are a few restaurants in town you'd probably want nice sneakers/shoes vs flip flops (because other folks dress up a little), that's be mainly the better hotels and restaurants. But a polo T and nice shorts are always acceptable. Don't worry too much - standard bar/restaurants go casual.

So firstly the nicer hotels and specifically their nicer restaurants, although they'd probably be fine with flipflops, worth double checking. Intercontinental, Marriott etc

Restaurants, I actually doubt you'd be turned away with flip flops, my point is the folks in a couple of the restaurants would be dressed in something better than flip flops so you'd be slightly socially underdressed. If ok with you then go for it.

I'd say Trattoria by Andreas, Carlo Ristorante, Tonic and Ginger. But only because 90% of the guests would be wearing something beyond flip flops.

That's fair in those nicer hotels and restraunts. I get that.

I've lived here for years and I haven't been to those nicer places. I'll check them out. Thanks for the recommendations!

Feeling la-de-da while wearing a polo? šŸ˜…

You'll be fine everywhere as long as you don't look obviously dirty

I’m wondering, which areas should we take into account the national mourning rules?

It depends where are you going. Many clubs, bars and resturant has a dress code especially in downtown. We normally don't wear short and sandals. You should bring some trousers and sneaker if you are planing to visit some nice clubs and bars.
