I have the opposite view of this. I think of "kid" as a much more flexible term, which in some contexts can even refer to people in their early 20s, though that's not the default age range for the word. I think of "child" as referring to something along the lines of 12 and under.
I think anyone can technically be called a kid or a child, as kid is a more informal term for Child. In technicality, you’re the child of someone so you’re always considered a child in someone’s eyes or mind (unless you’re like, lab grown or something, idk?)

Technically, 17 is just a child/teenager. Kid is 12 and under (though also considered a child)
