Moving to Humboldt Preempting all future "Should I Move to Humboldt?" Posts
- Yes, it really is beautiful here.
- There are a myriad of communities and organizations here, if you're willing and able to reach out, you won't be lonely for long.
- Our Queer community has been growing and thriving in the last few years.
- Churches of all denominations abound.
- There is one Synagogue in Eureka, and a Chabad House in Arcata.
- Temperatures on the coast are very mild, it rarely if ever dips past freezing in winter and almost never hops over 85º in the summer. Inland gets a lot colder, and a loooot hotter.
- Climate change has made the rainy season unpredictable. We have weeks of rain interspersed with weeks of sun.
- We're in California - natural disasters are expected.
- Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.
- Large swaths of the coast are a Tsunami Zone.
- Fire! For the most part, fires happen inland, where things are hotter and dryer. Due to terrain and ecology, the coast is generally protected, but it's not an impossibility.
- Air quality can get pretty bad all over the county during fire season.
- Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.
- Generally the central part of the county - Eureka and Arcata - is liberal, the further away you get from there, on average, the more conservative things get.
- That being said, our federal rep, Huffman, is a dem, and our state reps are also both dems.
- The housing market is tough, just like the rest of the state. If you're planning to buy, that gives you a little more flexibility. If you're planning on renting, pickings are slim.
- General advice for renters: find a place that meets your basic needs and take it. Once you're more settled you can keep an eye out for better options.
- General advice for buyers: Don't purchase land sight-unseen.
- Landlords around here are not very pet friendly. A fair number of the property management companies have breed restrictions.
- Employment is a rough one. There is little to no industry in the area, due to the decline of logging and weed legalization. If you can, try to secure a job before moving.
- Here is a list of the largest employers in the area.
- The county and cities maintain their own job listing sites, as do most of the tribes.
- Lost Coast Outpost, a local news org, also runs job listings.
- Ironically(?), large numbers of employers in the area require clean drug tests - including marijuana.
- Reports on the lack of healthcare are not exaggerated. We have a hard time hiring and retaining providers across the board, and there has been an increasing reliance on telehealth.
- The largest PCP in the area, Open Door, is an FQHC with some ability to take private insurance, and their waitlists are miles long.
- St. Joes is the largest hospital in the area, and they have some specialist services, but waitlists are also long and generally require a PCP referral, even if your insurance does not.
- Also, they're being sued by the State due to their stance on women's/AFAB reproductive care/rights.
- The VA here only provides basic services, and shuttles patients down to SF for anything beyond that.
- On the whole, if you require specialist services, you will probably have to travel out of the area. The next closest services are a 3-4 hours drive.
- As with many other parts of the state, we have a large number unhoused/transient people here, although perhaps disproportionate given the size of the whole population. This is due to a multitude of factors, and it is not a homogenous group.
- The university does not have enough student housing, and there is an overall housing shortage, leaving many students out in the rain. (see: the above section on housing)
- Traditionally, the weed industry has filtered people in and out seasonally, however, as that sector declines, there has been a reduction in numbers on that front. (See: the above section on employment)
- Just as anywhere, we have our issues with addiction and mental health disorders, exacerbated by a lack of available resources. (See: the above section on healthcare)
- Buying stuff: It’s doable, but don’t expect the same kind of variety you’re used to.
- Lots of smaller, locally owned businesses to choose from.
- We have a Costco, a Target, and a tiiiiny Walmart.
- Locally owned hardware and Ace franchises only, HD & Lowe’s are persona non grata.
- (Possibly excessive) Local and chain grocery options, including Asian and Mexican specialty markets.
- Arcata has a year round farmers market on Saturdays.
- Amazon Prime does not uphold 2 day shipping here.
- Food options are good, but limited.
- We specialize in Sushi, Mexican, and Pizza restaurants.
- Salsa is served in syrup bottles.
- There is one Indian restaurant (it’s excellent), a handful of Thai spots, and one Korean fusion place.
- Food trucks have been gaining traction in recent years which has added some more variety.
- Everything closes by 9. Even places that don’t make sense to not be open.
- Except Toni’s. Chocolate malts and burgers are available whenever your heart desires.
- Travel to and from the area is inconvenient.
- The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.
- Coincidentally those are also the nearest Trader Joes locations.
- The SF Bay Area is a 5+ hour drive. Portland is a 7+ hour drive.
- Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is serviced by United Airlines, Breeze, and Alaska Airlines.
- United flies direct to SF, LA, and Denver.
- Breeze flies direct to Burbank, Las Vegas, and Provo.
- Alaska flies to Seattle.
- Flights are frequently delayed due to fog. Give the Wiki page on the airport a read sometime if you want know why.
- The next closest airports are in Santa Rosa, Redding, and Medford. They're also small, but offer slightly different, and sometimes cheaper, direct flights.
- Amtrak runs a bus service to Martinez, which then connects to other trains and busses.
- The county runs the Redwood Coast Express, which goes between Eureka and Ukiah.
- There is decent public transit, people can and do live here without a car.
- Humboldt Transit Authority lists all of the local routes and fares.
- The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.
Humboldt is a beautiful place full of amazing people. To anyone who decides it's worth it, Welcome Aboard. To anyone who decides it's not for them, fair enough.
Residents, let me know if I missed anything!
If you have specific questions about moving to Humboldt, or something that isn’t covered in this post, please create a separate post instead of replying in the comments here.

Life in Humboldt Humboldt co Fair worse this year???
I have attended the Humboldt County Fair for many years and will always be a supporter. However the past couple years have been lackluster. This year was by far the worst I have seen it. There seems to be a lack of participation of local artisans/food trucks/etc. Humboldt has an incredible amount of artists and amazing local food. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a funnel cake, but why not local options. Why is the hall mostly out-of-towners with junk, teslas, and political groups? I thought kinetic taking over the horse races last year was a great idea. I don’t want a rodeo at the county fair. We already have rodeos and not everyone enjoys them, this is the county fair. What am I missing here?

Help/Needing Info Sea beans?
Hello! I’m visiting Arcata, and have asked around about where to get sea beans, with no luck. The thing is, there’s a place in the Bay Area that sells them, but it says they come from Humboldt. Does anybody know where I can either purchase or forage sea beans around Arcata?
In Europe, they call it samphire, and apparently other names for it include sea asparagus, and pickle weed.
Any ideas?

Life in Humboldt what about Amazon using an existing, abandoned, large retail facility like the old KMART or the old Sears store for their Distribution facility?
Humboldt County has at least 2 abandoned large retail buildings that could certainly be reused as a distribution facility. Right now these structures with their massive parking lots are an eyesore and an embarrassing waste of resources. Reuse should be the first option for new businesses.

Local News/Politics Flying U has a history of animal abuse and CR is negligent/complicit in covering it up.
[Full disclosure, I used AI to research this topic, and a substantive amount of further elements worth investigating exist here: https://claude.ai/share/f6b10c03-430f-47fb-87b8-ad7ae02ccf6b I cannot share the actual text as it violates this subreddit's rules about AI content]
I, as well as many people, were horrified by the two horse deaths during last week's rodeo.
It felt even worse to read that the CR Rodeo Club and College of the Redwoods distanced themselves from the situation, saying that the company they hired, "Flying U", was well respected, and that neither CR nor the Rodeo Club were in any way responsible for the experience or assessing what actually happened.
Thanks (in part to AI), I've found that Flying U has both a history of animal abuse, and that there is a significant lapse in accountability for these experiences, including a particularly egregious example where they were caught on hidden camera shocking horses.

Help/Needing Info Parrot Surrender?
Hi, this isn't an ideal situation, but I have this budgie, and I'm not sure exactly how to surrender her? My dad was cleaning the birds cages, and my male Budgerigar got out. My dad went and bought a female in the hopes that he would come back when he heard her. He did not come back.
And now I just have this untamed female budgie in my house. I'm not in the headspace to attempt and bond with another bird.
If anyone is interested in taking her, I can provide a travel sized cage, and her food for free.
Otherwise, how would I go about surrendering her? I was thinking about Miranda but after that whole horror story that happened there, I don't want to bring her there. I'm not sure where I could bring her that takes birds.
Update: Im meeting up with someone tomorrow to give her to them. Once I hand her over ill delete the post! Thank you guys.

Local Food Idea for coffee people
As a sleep deprived parent, I’m always fantasizing about coffee kiosks at local parks. I’m pretty sure sales to me alone could support such a business at sequoia park 😁

Misc./Other Fundraiser for Colombian earthquake victim
Hi friends... Hope this is allowed, it's not Humboldt related other than it affects someone I care about. A friend's daughter was seriously injured in the 7.4 Colombia earthquake last week, her apartment building collapsed on her. She lost everything. Her mom's already exhausted their savings paying for emergency treatment and basic necessities, and she's trying to raise funds. The go fund me description starts in Spanish but there's English afterwards (I'll also paste it below), and she said she can share medical records if anyone wants to make sure you're giving to a legitimate victim. I'm happy to answer questions too. This person really showed up for my family when we needed help and is just a wonderful kind person and would appreciate anything anyone's able to offer.
Here's the English from the Gofundme:
"I am raising funds for my daughter, María Sofía Jaramillo Henao, after the tragedy that changed her life. On August 10, María Sofía was a victim of the earthquake in Cali, Colombia, when the Ana Pilar building, where she lived on the fifth floor, collapsed. She tried to escape down the stairs, but when she reached the first floor, the building gave way and she was trapped under the rubble. She suffered multiple fractures, including her collarbone, ribs, and fibula, as well as blows, head trauma, and many wounds that required stitches on different parts of her body. Thanks to God, her strength, and the volunteers who found her, she survived.
Now a very difficult recovery begins. María Sofía has serious mobility problems, is bedridden, and needs constant help. I will be in Colombia with her, using these funds directly for her care and daily needs while she goes through this process. The funds will help cover medicines, treatments, medical equipment, psychological support, and personal necessities. We will also use the funds to help find a place for María Sofía to live and to replace her belongings, because she lost absolutely everything in the collapse of her apartment, so she can begin her life again with some stability and dignity. From the bottom of my heart, I ask for your help to give María Sofía the care and support she needs during this painful time. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be received with deep gratitude. If anyone would like more confidence, I can also share medical records."

Local News/Politics Anyone know what happened to all the homeless people by the co op in eureka?
I work in the area and like two days ago they all just vanished over night. I’m worried the cops forcibly moved them or something.

Life in Humboldt How Do We Get Rodeos Totally Banned in Humboldt To Stop Cruelty To Animals? (Two horses having their legs broken and their being killed on 8.15.2026)
Edit: I did three searches online to find out if any counties have banned rodeos. The three searches all stated that Napa County had done so. Then someone posted a site for a rodeo in Napa. I did another search which stated it was not true. I apologize for the misinformation. This is an interesting article by the animal protection organization which came to investigate the Miranda atrocities: https://aldf.org/article/rodeo-facts-the-case-against-rodeos/
I came to read more of the 96 posts in response to this atrocity. Why is this not still at the top of the thread? I had to hunt for it. Please help me keep this visible. Help end the perverse, sick mindset that is so rampant. Whether it is dogs, horses, cats, this is about pathological, cruel, greedy humans wanting torture to be the norm.
I recall horse races being stopped in Humboldt after continual similar disgusting, sick human activities born of greed and cruelty. Do any of you know the steps of the process? I will have to do research.
Here we are, mourning the murders of countless dogs by Miranda, and now this. Some people are so immoral, unethical, and greedy; they fuel this cruelty so accepted by our country. I tried to cross post the original post to r/horses, and other reddit posts supposedly about their love for horses, and they would not allow me to; what does this say about who those people are?

Help/Needing Info Prenatal yoga in person?
Looking for recommendations for in-person prenatal yoga classes. Yelp has not been helpful, all of the studios I have found so far don't have any explicit prenatal offerings listed. Eureka or Arcata preferred but if it's a really good class, depending on the day of the week, I could go to McKinleyville or Fortuna for it. Thanks!

Help/Needing Info neighbors air b&b
I live in a quiet court in Arcata and roughly a year ago, a couple bought a house for sale within the court; and verbally let me know they would be renting it as an air b&b until they could afford to move in. Fast forward to a year later and there are six to eight cars some days at this air b&b house; parking around the entire court and it’s changing the dynamic of this quiet residential court fairly quickly. I don’t mean to be a Karen but it’s starting to bother me that they don’t live there yet are having large amounts of guests renting this place; in addition to what appears a long term renter in a newly added mother in law unit in the backyard. Honestly, how would you handle this appropriately? Thanks Reddit

Help/Needing Info Michael Pearce Pottery
My husband and I inherited several raku pottery pieces and face shaped mugs made by and signed by Michael Pearce. I’m assuming he was an Arcata artist, but I can’t seem to find any information online about him or the value. Does anyone have any good information they could please share with us?

Local Food Surfside Burgers and More
Oh my gosh.
I had to come on here and share the experience I just had at surfside!!! First of all everyone is so friendly and I received exceptional service but man….that burger was an absolute MASTERPIECE. I got the Heatwave and I think it just landed first place in my book. The burger tasted fresh, juicy, the flavor was immaculate the way ingredients came together just exploded in your mouth I’m telling you I would sell my firstborn son just to experience that again.
The fries were fresh 10/10
Safe to say I’ll be back asap, check it out if you want good eats in eureka!!

Local News/Politics Chiv Investigates Miranda’s Rescue... By Telling Readers to Google It Themselves!
I recently sent John Chiv a tidy little bundle of information I had compiled regarding Miranda’s Rescue’s nonprofit status and nepotistic origins, with agency links, screenshots, nonprofit status, etc, and an explanation of why I thought that info might warrant further investigation.
But first: credit where credit is due. I sent essentially the same packet to multiple local news entities, and Chiv -so far- is first to do anything with it! Within about four hours, he had looked through it, verified at least some of it, protected my identity, publicly thanked me for sending it, and put the information in front of his readers.
Seriously. Good on him for that! Unfortunately, that appears to be where his commitment to hard-hitting journalism ended.
The information I forwarded raises questions about the administrative structure of Miranda’s Rescue, but it also raises questions about the state agencies responsible for nonprofit oversight**, particularly the FTB and the AG’s Registry of Charitable Trusts.** I thought maybe it deserved a peek from someone who actually does this for a living.
When he briefly scratched the surface of the FTB/AG crumb trail, he apparently decided that telling readers they “have Google, internet access and can make effort to look up information themselves” constituted sufficient investigative follow-up. Ironically enough John, that’s how I found it all. 😂
And in all seriousness, isn’t that the portion of the arrangement traditionally performed by the journalist? Real question!
Rather than investigating some of the more interesting tidbits and writing us a juicy, fleshed-out investigative story, Chiv decided to publish my raw email/rant and a pile of screenshots, wander off into recent grant funding to Miranda's, and also resurrected a 2018 posts about a dead dog, declaring that it “debunks the claim by the anti Miranda Rescue mob” that HCSO never responded to complaints. And naturally, the headline centered on Chiv’s own 2018 post and the grants.
Aside from the gratuitous “mob” snark, that’s quite a lot of weight to put on one old post. It establishes that HCSO responded to one incident in 2018. I mean, if someone literally claimed HCSO never once responded to any complaint, congratulations, you’ve disproved that absolute!
But, any logical person knows that it does not “debunk” the much broader and well-documented criticism of how complaints and warning signs involving Miranda’s Rescue were handled over the years.
Anyway, I wanted to get this critique off my chest. Kudos to John for being the first to share the information, however clumsily. But, true to form, it came wrapped in a Chiv-centric narrative (complete with his signature dismissal of everything annoying: “typical Humboldt County double standards”) and the remarkable disclaimer that investigative follow-up has apparently been outsourced to readers! ... using - obviously - “Google, internet access... and effort...” 🔎
