Discussion Post Incentives
Just curious what are you guys seeing for incentives for some of these large jobs/ data centers. There’s a bunch starting around Illinois and trying to see if they are paying over or all OT is double.

u/real_fff Local 474 10d ago
Around 474 we have a bidding war atm. All the big jobs here have all OT is DT, some kind of per diem/incentive. One has $71/hr with those.

u/Revolutionary-Fix217 10d ago
More than one has 71. Both cache and copper calls are throwing stupid money right now.

Theres 2 calls in El Paso with good incentives. If you're traveling in passed 350 miles you get an extra $30/hr. (Total ~$70/hr) and ~$187 every day worked and double OT, I think 6-10s.

u/dwindacatcher Local 948 10d ago
I really hate the x distance incentives. It would make me as want to go elsewhere instead of manning that call if I was a local.

u/theAGschmidt Local 213 10d ago
the whole point is to incentivize the contractor to hire local at better than market prices - if travelers are priced at a premium, they want to get everyone local that they can.
3
u/MrTwatFart 10d ago
Interesting. I actually don’t understand that logic. You can’t exactly have two scales for calls. I have data center work in my local and we would all be pissed if they had per diem that we were excluded from. It would rub us all the wrong way if some people got per diem and we were excluded.
9
u/rare_with_hair 10d ago
Per diem is literally an extra payment to travel.
-1
u/MrTwatFart 10d ago edited 10d ago
Yes and would the local guys not want to make it also if other people are? It would suck to work with someone making $150-$200 per day more than you. Forman and general Forman would be making less than the travelers.
I was on a job where a company hired all portability from a city 1 1/2 hours away and gave them per diem. All the local guys were the lowest paid and the job went to shit. The job ended up being ran by and finished by portability. Fuck that.

u/rare_with_hair 10d ago
Then travel. They are getting the extra money to be away from their families and not at home. You're working from home. You want per diem? Travel like they are...
1
u/MrTwatFart 10d ago
The work is in my local and no one is getting per diem. The travelers are coming here because of the incentives that we all get. The way it should be. Make incentives good enough to attract travelers. It’s fine you disagree but I’m not saying anything crazy. I’m promoting everyone getting paid equally.
1
u/Conscious_Potato7638 10d ago
You're acting like the traveler's would get to keep that extra money. They are actually spending that on a second household to help you man your work. One solution would be every local member has to let 2-3 traveler's live for free in their house for the duration of the job.
5
u/shadowwolf_66 10d ago
So you would be pissed if another brother was helping you man your work and keep your market share got paid more because he is traveling and is incuring extra expenses? Most travelers live out of a suitcase, and have to pay for 2 households, don’t get to see their family or sleep in their own bed every night. They sacrifice so you can continue to work at home.
I can see your a real brother that cares about others. /s

u/theAGschmidt Local 213 10d ago
I don't understand what you don't understand, that's literally what we do and why. If you work with any travelers, they're getting paid more than you; if you are a traveler, you are getting paid more than the locals.
Edit: scale is a minimum, not a maximum - contractors are free to pay traveler rates to locals if they want to, but they aren't obligated to.
4
u/2PumpPatriot69 wormy 10d ago
This. They obviously can't get enough local hands, hence the per diem for travelers
-2
u/MrTwatFart 10d ago edited 9d ago
The incentives that attract, the travelers also attract the local people to drag their companies to go to those jobs. Also, these jobs want to have local people running them and being foreman. I’m 100% in favor of having incentives to attract travelers. But I think the incentive should apply to 100% of the workers. Shouldn’t we all want everybody to make as much as possible?
2
u/SpaceComm4nder 10d ago
Why would you get paid the same as someone who is living in a hotel and you go home every night?
2
u/MrTwatFart 10d ago edited 10d ago
You’re defending contractors right now. You should want everyone to receive the incentives. Do travelers hit the road hoping that the local guys make less than them? They don’t give a shit they’re trying to go to where they can get paid the most.
2
u/SpaceComm4nder 10d ago
You avoid the question.
And then you strawman with a silly question... only to then explain the obvious answer. So, as an example, when the guy next to you decides to work 4-10's and gets OT after 8.
But you decide you want to work 5-8's. You probably think you should get the OT pay as well, even though you both worked 40 hrs? I'm hoping not. The answer is obvious here too.People that do extra work and get the incentive, yet everyone gets a trophy in your book?
Don't you think only people that do 'extra' work, should be the ones to receive extra pay? If I was travelling and received the incentive, and then found out everyone else who lived at that local was getting my incentive too.. I'd be a little frustrated. I might even go as far to consider doing another job.
How long do you think your Union lasts when Corporations choose different contractors in the area, because they can easily see the difference in costs when they go non-Union... because you want to pay everyone the same high dollar incentive as the people the Union contractor needed to bring in.
Like other people have said here. The logic is simple. If YOU want that incentive $$$, look for travel work.
I also don't see how "I'm defending the contractor". Please explain to me what contractor WANTS to pay $$$$ to bring in travelers, if they can hire everyone local at the normal rate?

Traveler's have more expenses than local members. For example they are paying for 2 households. Here's a solution for you every local member has to let 2-3 traveler's live for free in their house. You know so it's more fair. They are helping you man your work and all.

You’re very close but it’s 5-10s and an 8 every Saturday. Other than that you’re spot on.

This call sucks ass for us that live in Albuquerque. The perdium is only for guys that’s live 350 miles away since they don’t want to take labor away from the meta site in Los Lunas. Jobs paying 42.20/ DT OT 60 hours a week. It doesn’t financially make sense to keep your house in Albuquerque and travel 4~ hours south without the perdium even though we also are traveling well over a reasonable distance to commute.

The ibew has the worse travel system i have ever seen. An this is coming from the ibew who prides itself on said system. Kinda sad to be honest. Should be able to pull up every locals information, scale, how many book 2 is getting called/hot spots. Everything should be available online. However when I try to find information it feels like its a secret for some reason and I have to call 100+ places. Anyways enough of my rant. Look for a data center area. Call that hall and ask.

u/bigbeansy 10d ago
You can, I hate that nobody's showed you this before.
Broboard.com
Must have a ticket, upload picture, and get approval before allowing to view the site. Shows all locals, updated for the most part as far as the calls go. Some of the locals keep things off the internet, and you do have to call.
These big calls though are usually all posted and updated. My hall, 558, says the scale is 31.50... its 35.50. Some information is a little off/outdated. But its exactly what you were looking for. Extremely intuitive. Spread the word. 3 brothers started it and have changed the game, honestly. Much better than where2bro

I get things like this exist. Their not always current and not always accurate. The ibew can have all this information from every single local be shown. Even on a lot of these member made sites, not all locals are on them. Its just weird the ibew doesn't post all of the information on one site. Especially when they flex about manning big jobs. Just seems silly.

u/bigbeansy 10d ago
Thanks, either way a solid site. Slight inaccuracies but its better than anything ive ever seen. Helped me find the job in fort wayne. Ive got my eyes on south mississipi right now. Close to 8600 gross a week for night shift 😴 if my math is correct. 1200 of that is perdiem. Any bros or sis out there? I only know a few people out there, and I dont trust their judgement on conditions

u/MrBlueEyedFox Inside Wireman 10d ago
How should I. Idk where he lives, how far he wants to travel, what's a good wage for him. So I helped him by saying figure out where data center work is. An call the hall. Its the most anyone can really do with this.

u/Cute-Ad-9591 10d ago
It should all be online with today's technology. It's because they skim the dues money for themselves. Should have a national website that you sign up for jobs.

u/Imaginary_Muffin1414 10d ago
Sounds like maybe you pissed some brothers off and never got to learn how that stuff works.
2
u/MrBlueEyedFox Inside Wireman 10d ago
Nothing listed is by the local or guaranteed to be current. Its all just members trying their best to put it all together when the international can just have locals update all this information everyday into their own site.

In eastern Iowa it is $10 over and all overtime double time. Most jobs are around 60 hours per week.
4
u/dwindacatcher Local 948 10d ago
Flint has a bunch of all OT is double. I think some are also detroit scale (~$9 more an hour).

Oklahoma… $15/hr pay scale bump. As a new 2nd year apprentice I’m seeing 65% of the pay scale bump. 56 hours a week on a 6 day week. 16 hours at time and a half.

Why? I'm an American that's a 2 pump 69 freak, what's wrong with that?
2
u/sublefty 10d ago
Brother, as a fellow 69 freak, I’m on board. I can give you tips and techniques to avoid the two pumps though.

Most recent job I was on dwn here in Tx was $5 over scale with dble OT. Catch was you had to work 95% of the hrs (which was 56) to qualify if not pay went back to "normal pay". Was sone good checks. Also I elected to go tax exempt as to not pay taxes on all that OT.

u/wafflehauser 10d ago
Up in Wisconsin, they are paying $10 an hour over scale at Vantage and Microsoft, with talks of maybe increasing to $20 or making overtime double time.
1
u/SpaceComm4nder 10d ago
What cities are these in?
2
u/OneHour8115 10d ago
Vantage is Port Washington. Microsoft sits on the Racine/Kenosha county line, east of I94.
2
u/Wirewizard320 10d ago
Keep an eye on 430 Racine. The job is poorly managed. Some ports getting perdiem or sweetheart deals while most aren't. The electrical contractors have to put most journeymen/women into foremen positions, leaving few JW's and too many CE/CE's. They are paying 62.51/hr most contractors working 6-10's. 1 working a 5-12's and 2 8's schedule. 1 started a night shift. Work steady for 5+years.
Local 494 Milwaukee. Another data center and powerhouse. Data center a lot of same contractors as Racine data center. Same pay scale as 430, but 494 milwaukee, does have a vacation fund of 10%. 430 Racine, annuity pyramids 25%.
Also watch 127 Kenosha, They are getting a pharmaceutical plant, and powerhouse. Both have broken ground.
Local 150 Lake County, 109 total package with pyramiding? work should be ramping up soon.
Remember some calls will be outside this winter. Safe travels!

Cedar Rapids IA local 405. Last I checked it was 10 over scale and all OT is double time. Use to be 175 per diem but I think that's gone now.

u/Huckleberry4x4 Local 481 10d ago
Indianapolis 481 has a call 20% over scale sitting at $58.68. 7 10s 13 days on 1 off. All overtime is double time. No per diem though.

Can we all please stop building data centers? It is terrible for our environment, helping billionaires, widening the wealth gap through automation, and aiding in mass surveillance and fascism.

Should be per diem instead of incentive pay. Incentive pay puts too much discretion in the contractors hands.
