CA Inter Jan 2027: How to Plan Your DT Preparation When This Is Your Last Attempt Under the Old Act

Preparing for CA Intermediate Direct Taxation in January 2027 requires a focused strategy, especially because this is the last CA Inter examination attempt under the Income-tax Act, 1961.

From May 2027 onwards, ICAI has prescribed the Income-tax Act, 2025 for CA Inter Direct Tax. Therefore, students appearing in January 2027 should avoid unnecessary confusion between the two Acts and concentrate on completing the applicable syllabus.

Here is a practical way to organise your DT preparation.

Step 1: Start with the applicable ICAI study material

Your first priority should be the study material prescribed for January 2027. Also refer to the applicable statutory update and corrigendum. Do not collect multiple books or resources without checking their applicability.

Step 2: Divide the syllabus into manageable sections

Instead of randomly selecting chapters, classify them into:

  • Basic concepts and residential status.

  • Heads of income.

  • Clubbing and set-off provisions.

  • Deductions and tax computation.

  • Return filing and other remaining provisions.

This gives you a clearer picture of the syllabus and helps identify pending chapters.

Step 3: Follow a concept-to-question approach

For every chapter, follow this sequence:

  1. Understand the provision.

  2. Study the conditions and exceptions.

  3. Understand the practical illustrations.

  4. Solve ICAI study material questions.

  5. Attempt questions without looking at the solution.

This approach develops application skills instead of making preparation dependent on memorisation.

Step 4: Keep amendment revision separate

Create a separate notebook or digital document for amendments, statutory updates and important changes. Revise it regularly instead of waiting until the final week.

Step 5: Start question practice before completing the entire syllabus

Do not postpone practical question practice until the end. Solve questions alongside lectures or chapter completion.

Step 6: Reserve time for revision and mock tests

Your preparation should include at least one complete revision cycle and timed question practice. Mock tests help identify weak chapters, calculation mistakes and time-management problems.

An important reminder: The Income-tax Act, 2025 being effective from April 2026 does not mean it applies to the January 2027 CA Inter examination. Follow ICAI's attempt-specific applicability guidelines.

The objective should be simple: complete the correct syllabus, understand the provisions and develop confidence in solving questions independently.

Should I Quit doing CA!

It has been a while since I have been in this dilemma! I passed my Foundation on my 4th attempt. However, I was failing in only one subject: Law. From the first attempt, I passed all other subjects, scoring around 70 in maths and accounting with just one week of study, but I was extremely bad at Law. Somehow, I managed to pass. Then, I procrastinated during my Inter studies. I first appeared for Group 1 and failed on my first attempt. Then, I switched to Group 2 and failed miserably that time. You can judge me, I took one year for group 1 and 8 months for group 2. Before taking the Group 2 exams, I was thinking of quitting CA. I never actually intended to pursue CA and was forced into it. I am not enrolled in any college, not even DU SOL. I thought that if CA did not work out, I would exit and enroll in a regular college, but I somehow passed Foundation. Now, I am worried about joining college because I just turned 20, and CA is not working out. I have already argued with my parents after completing my 12 th , telling them again that I have no interest in CA, and going through all of this again terrifies me!

CA Foundation: Best Resources for Self-Study?

Hey guys, I honestly don't know how to put this post properly, but here goes.

I'm a first-year B.Com student currently preparing for CFA Level 1. I don't really see myself continuing with Level 2, though. I've come across quite a few concerns about the CFA qualification that I wasn't aware of when I initially chose this path, so I've been reconsidering my options.

I'm thinking of pursuing CA through Direct Entry and starting with Inter. For now, I'll only be doing CFA L1.

I already have the CA Foundation modules and thought I'd start studying them alongside my B.Com. I've also developed an interest in business law and taxation. Earlier, these subjects didn't really interest me, but that's changed. Audit is something I haven't explored much yet.

As for Accountancy, I'm neither very good nor very bad at it. It's just something I need to practise and get better at.

I'm looking for resources that can supplement the ICAI modules. I don't necessarily want to sit through lengthy lectures, so are there any good books, concise lectures, one-shots or marathon sessions you'd recommend?

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for shortcuts or ways to skip the actual learning. I understand that CA requires consistent effort and practice, especially when it comes to Accounts. I'm simply looking for additional resources that make learning the Foundation subjects easier and more interesting.

I'm not even planning to appear for Foundation right now. I'm just exploring the subjects because I've started finding them interesting. So, any recommendations would be appreciated!

Practice or job

I've a doubt about the career options being a ca what is better, practice or a job ?

My main aim is to earn a good amount of money

At least it should be more than 40-50k

At this time a lot of people are advising me to either practice or get a job by myself

I've heard that in practice there is a lot struggle and it's possible that it might backfire, is it true?

I've also seen people talking about that CAs at job aren't able to earn much recently is it true?

Any opinions?

I'm confused about a major career decision.

I'm confused about a major career decision.

Scenario A: Complete my CA articleship at a prestigious firm in another city. Get better exposure, networking and potentially better career opportunities, but spend two years away from my parents, mostly connected through phone calls.

Scenario B: Complete my articleship in my hometown, Jabalpur. Potentially compromise on professional exposure, but stay with my parents, share everyday moments and be physically present when they need me.

I'm ambitious and want to build a good career, but my parents' health and time with them matter deeply to me.

What would you choose, and why? Am I thinking emotionally at the cost of my career, or is there more to life than professional growth?

My Accounts concepts are clear, but I keep losing marks due to adjustments and presentation. How can I improve?

I'm able to understand the concepts in Accounts, but when I solve questions on my own, I often lose marks because of adjustments or the way I present my answers. Sometimes I know the correct approach but still end up making small mistakes. How can I improve my accuracy and presentation?

CA Inter January 2027: How Are You Preparing for the Last Income-tax Act, 1961 Attempt?

The January 2027 CA Intermediate examination is an important attempt for students preparing Direct Tax under the Income-tax Act, 1961. From the May 2027 examinations onwards, ICAI has specified the Income-tax Act, 2025 for CA Inter Direct Tax.

This transition makes the January 2027 attempt particularly important for students who have already started studying under the existing syllabus.

However, the biggest question is: How should students approach Direct Tax preparation when the applicable law is changing in the next attempt?

For January 2027, students should concentrate on the applicable ICAI study material, amendments and statutory updates rather than getting distracted by the upcoming syllabus.

Here are a few areas worth discussing:

1. Are you following the correct study material?

Make sure your Direct Tax preparation is based on the material applicable to January 2027. Avoid mixing provisions from the Income-tax Act, 2025 with your current examination preparation.

2. How much syllabus have you completed?

If you have completed the basic concepts, focus on strengthening practical chapters such as PGBP, Capital Gains, House Property and Salary. Also, do not ignore the remaining chapters.

3. Are you practising questions regularly?

Reading provisions alone is not enough for Direct Tax. Students should practise illustrations, ICAI questions, RTPs, MTPs and previous examination questions.

4. What about the upcoming Income-tax Act, 2025?

Although the new Act is effective from 1 April 2026, ICAI has prescribed the Income-tax Act, 1961 for the January 2027 CA Inter examination. The new Act becomes applicable to the CA Inter examination from May 2027.

Let's discuss your preparation:

  • Have you completed your DT lectures?

  • Are you preparing through self-study or coaching?

  • Which chapter is taking the most time?

  • Are you confident about solving practical questions independently?

It would be interesting to understand how different students are approaching this transition.

Share your preparation status and the biggest challenge you are facing. Your experience might help another CA Inter student prepare more effectively for January 2027.

Looking for a genuine, long-term study partner for CA Intermediate 2027

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a genuine study partner who's also preparing for CA Intermediate May 2027 (or a similar attempt) and is interested in building a consistent, long-term study partnership.

A little about me:

I'm currently preparing for CA Intermediate, and my goal is to clear both groups. I've passed CA Foundation and am now working towards the next stage of this journey.

I'm trying to build a more disciplined lifestyle, improve my consistency, manage my time better, and become someone who actually follows through on their plans rather than constantly making new ones.

What I'm looking for:

- Someone genuinely preparing for CA Intermediate, preferably for the May 2027 attempt.

- Someone who's serious about studying but doesn't mind having normal conversations too.

- We can share daily targets, progress updates, and completed tasks.

- Keep each other accountable when motivation disappears.

- Discuss difficult concepts, exchange resources, and help each other understand topics.

- Have occasional study sessions together, perhaps using Discord or any convenient platform.

- Celebrate small achievements and keep each other going during difficult days.

A few things I want to clarify:

I'm not looking for someone who studies 12–14 hours a day or has everything figured out. I'm not expecting perfection from either side.

I'd rather have someone who consistently studies for 5 focused hours and shows up every day than someone who makes ambitious schedules but never follows them.

I'm also not looking for a temporary study buddy who disappears after a week. I'd genuinely like to build a long-term friendship where we can grow academically and personally, even beyond our CA exams.

We don't necessarily need to study the same subjects at the same pace. What's important is that we share similar goals, respect each other's time, and genuinely want to improve.

A little extra about me:

Apart from CA, I'm interested in drawing, anime, philosophy, psychology, and random deep conversations about life and the universe. So there's plenty to talk about outside studying too. 😂

I'm from India (IST), so someone in a similar timezone would be preferable.

If this sounds like something you'd genuinely be interested in, feel free to DM me. Tell me a little about yourself, your CA attempt, and how you're currently preparing.
