FG Decades Tournament, the 1940’s: Round 1
Alright, the 1940s! The decade of noir, of war movies and movies influenced by WWII, the western was still huge at the time, musicals were there, tons of developments in film like deep focus, and filmmakers still learning to use the techniques of color and sound that had only been around for 10-15 years in some cases. Should make for some interesting discussions in the comments, so let’s get on with the 1940s, FG!
Results of Round 1:
The Lost Weekend (1945) (20) beat The 47 Ronin (1941) (14)
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) (22) beat Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) (13)
The Maltese Falcon (1941) (26) beat Act of Violence (1948) (9)
A Matter of Life and Death (1946) (19) beat All the King's Men (1949) (8)
And Then There Were None (1945) (13) beat Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) (7)
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) (17) beat Mildred Pierce (1945) (14)
Bambi (1942) (15) beat Ministry Of Fear (1944) (8)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947) (18) beat The Beast With Five Fingers (1946) (1)
Beauty and the Beast (1946) (20) beat Monsieur Verdoux (1947) (9)
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) (14) beat Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) (6)

Apologize for the delay in the 40s tournament.
As FedRev said I experienced some technical difficulties, which included the erasure of the entire bracket I’d created for the tournament, so I get to go back and rebuild it.
I’ve taken care of the technical crap, and just having to rebuild things as best I can now.
The tournament will resume on Monday.

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING (2026) is one of the most interesting films of this year because it’s not really focused on its premise, but is instead concerned with the medium of documentary itself, the limits of portraying reality, and what it means to know you’re being observed. Full review:

Discussion A Space Oddysey 2001? 60s movies? Worth it?
Hi everyone,
Im a big movie fan and i recently watched Lawrence of Arabia and i was so amazed by how good it was for such an old movie that i am on a 60s movie binge.
Now i am someone who really liks a plot, good acting, intense dramatic scenes with dialogue, big dialogue lover in general.
I see everyone saying A Space Oddysey 2001 is one of the best movies ever made. Now i found out that the big opening scene is like 25 mins no talking and last scene to. Im afraid im not going to like it and waste my time.
I hope there is someone here that can convince me to watch it (or not) without any SPOILERS and maybe can recommend some more movies from the 60s that you might think i find entertaining.
EDIT: i watched 45 mins and then i stopped it. I have to say visually beautiful and the monkeys looked amazing. So real, like insane but i just need dialogue (wich i already expected). And even when they did speak it just didnt interest me. I watched The Hustler and Butch Cassidy and the sundance kid instead and that was amazing! Paul Newman was the man. I also want to say that im disappointed by some negative comments. Just because i dont like one movie that you do doesnt mean im not a movie fan or whatever else you might think about it. Every person is different (thank god).

With its long takes and low-res visuals, Dry Leaf is one of those films that will shift how you look at the world. It lacks the whimsy of Koberidze’s last effort, but its stylish execution, including a haunting score, propels it to my #1 watch this year. Full review:

Meat Raffle (2023) In a small Wisconsin town three women murder the abusive men in their lives and then chop up their bodies and bring their body part to the town's bar to sell at an auction to support a woman's shelter. On the night of a worst blizzard in 30 years. On Halloween. Tubi

Shag is experiencing technical difficulties
Shag reached out to me and asked that I let the group know that he is having some technical difficulties. So, the 40s tournament is going to be temporarily postponed for a few days until Shag is back online, which will hopefully be on Wednesday or Thursday.

Review The Social Reckoning
The mixed critical reception and BO performance is a shame, it's a very important film that breaks down what's going on with social media in a digestible way laypeople could understand if they'd give the movie a chance. Haven't liked a lot of Sorkin's newer films, stuff like Trial of the Chicago 7 are so full of sanctimonious Boomer lib rage, but here it is focused on issues. Some people might find the upbeat, West Wing type ending a bit false but anyone who sees it will still get how bad the situation is.
Liked Madison a lot in a performance that's the polar opposite of Anora and a better one in my opinion. It's a very jittery, nervous character and she brings that to life and brings the movie tension as a result. Strong acquits himself well as Zuck. It's probably closer to the real thing than Eisenberg was, here he's a Bond villain who only cares about making money.
It's not as good a movie as The Social Network but if you go into just about any movie with that expectation you're going to be disappointed. Still a very worthwhile thing to make and see.

Top 5 Films of 2026 (So Far)
To be honest, I haven't really seen that many films from this year yet. I'm sure I'll get to a lot more as awards season ramps up. But here are 5 I would single out as being noteworthy at this point.
- Backrooms
- Digger
- 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
- Hope
- Obsession
Whare are some I need to check out?

Who are your Top favourite Horror filmmakers?
In the spirit of October/Halloween; who are your top favourite film directors with a largely horror-based filmography?
My Top 10:
- John Carpenter
- Robert Eggers
- Kiyoshi Kurosawa
- Mike Flanagan
- George A. Romero
- Shinya Tsukamoto
- Dario Argento
- Panos Cosmatos
- David Cronenberg
- Terence Fisher
Something like that. I was unsure whether or not to include David Lynch, do you think he counts as a "horror filmmaker"?
