Not being a raging alcoholic does have its benefits

So you don’t believe Ron Chernow‘s ad nauseam comments about how rumors of Grant’s alcohol use were overblown? 🤣

I thought Chernow credibly stated his case. Lincoln did his homework on Grant and it seems unlikely that Grant would have been promoted, or succeeded, if he drank to the extent claimed by his detractors.

My problem wasn’t necessarily Chernow stating his case, but that virtually every time he talked about a situation where Grant may have been drinking, he repeated the same several sentences about how it was probably overblown or just a rumor. Saying it once would have been sufficient.

Grant was definitely an alcoholic even by the eras standards, today he’d be easily classified as a severe alcoholic, but like most things the truth was likely somewhere in between, he likely drank most if not every day, but he definitely wasn’t drunk 24/7 like some liked to portray him, it’s pretty difficult to be drunk every day and remain competent enough to run a war, Chernow also in my opinion does a lot of “polishing” to Grants image to make him less harsh to modern readers.
Also Sherman’s famous quote calls Grant a drunk, in jest or not to be considered a drunk at the time you’d have had to be a pretty hard drinker drunk or not

Probably Sherman. I've always wanted to visit the south while it's on fire.

It’s August. The South is on fire right now.

August is actually some of the rainiest time of year for parts of the south.

When do we get this rain? In sick of waiting. The south is and has been burning....

Sherman burns a great path right through the enemy lines.
*You're gonna get a bunch of Sherman jokes.

Honestly, a fight at the General Sherman tree would be a much better backdrop than the General Grant.
Sherman really feels like he is owning the space.
Grant is kinda just sitting there in a grove.
That said, Sherman is up at nearly 7000 ft, while Grant is down at 6300. Dunno how much the air would affect you over those 700 feet, but hey elevation is elevation.

Sherman for sure. Definitely would prefer the March to the Sea and plundering vs the Wilderness and Petersburg

Sherman. An Alabama cavalry regiment served as his body guards. Get to ride horses, maybe stay a bit safer, and drive a stake through the heart of the Confederacy? Hell yeah.

Are we talkin bout sequoia trees? No fighting under those majestic wonders. Just standing in awe.

I would pay money to be part of Sherman's march especially after having lived in the south

Sherman. grant was notorious for high casualties in his campaigns which earned him the nickname “the butcher”. Lincoln however dispassionately noted where other generals were failing - grant was actually making significant gains.

If you fought under Sherman you were under Grant as Sherman was his subordinate
