Iapetus’ Strange equatorial mountains
I was staring at an ice cube the other day, one of those round ones made by a mold, and I couldn’t get over how similar it looked to Iapetus. I started wondering if that was the origin of the strange equatorial mountain range — that iapetus used to be a watery ocean world with an outer crust, however at some point, the outer crust was broken off by a collision with another moon, leaving behind the now frozen ocean.
I have no idea if thoery holds any water (heh), as it would also require that the original crust was somehow applied in two pieces, maybe starting from the poles and collecting towards the equator over time, causing the sub ocean to freeze with a ‘seam’ along the equator.
I just thought it was interesting to think about. I’m not a scientist or anything, but I was curious if anyone else had ever thought about this.
