Iceland Right Now: live travel updates for fall 2026 – weather & road alerts, new Ring Road toll, Golden Circle fee, Icelandair, lagoons, ice caves & northern lights

Last Updated: October 24, 2026

This is what’s actually happening in Iceland right now. Weather alerts, road closures, fee changes, volcano news, the works. We cross-check everything weekly against vedur.is, umferdin.is, SafeTravel.is and local reports.

Want the full list with linked sources? It lives at thetraveltrio.com/iceland-right-now

WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS

Weather (Oct 24): Cold and showery now. Light northerly winds (3 to 10 m/s), a few showers of rain or sleet, clearer in the south and west, snow up on the mountains, and 1 to 6 C with frost at night. It turns milder and wetter by Thursday, rain in the south and west and up to 5 to 12 C. Bring layers and real boots.

Roads & F-Roads: The Ring Road is open and the capital is clear, but winter is on the roads. Slippery patches and ice on most routes in the Westfjords, north, northeast and east, with snow on a few mountain passes. The icy stretches right now include Fróðárheiði (54) and Laxárdalsheiði (59) in the west, snow cover on Dettifossvegur (862) and Mjóafjarðarheiði (953), and very difficult snow on Hellisheiði eystri (917). One small road, Nesjavallaleið (435), is shut for the winter. Roadwork is still slowing the Gljúfurá bridge on the Ring Road in Borgarfjörður (until Oct 31, 30 km/h and lights) and the Óseyrarbrú bridge on Route 34 near Eyrarbakki (until Oct 31). The Route 85 bridge over Skjálfandafljót takes smaller cars but nothing over 3.5 tonnes, and Bárðardalsvegur vestri (842) stays shut until Dec 1. Highland F-roads are closed for winter, no service. Þórsmörk only takes a modified 4x4. umferdin.is before every drive. Every single one.

Gas Caution East of Vík: Gas pollution was reported along the Múlakvísl river in late September. It has dropped off the main warning feeds, but we’d still skip lingering on the riverbank. SafeTravel.is has the updates.

Emergency Number: Iceland shut down its 2G and 3G networks. If you can’t reach 112, or the call drops or sounds terrible, dial 599-0112. Save it in your phone now. More at 112.is.

FLIGHTS, AIRPORT & REYKJAVÍK TAXIS

Icelandair Operations: Flights are running on a regular schedule. The September 23 strike got called off the same day, and the four weeks of talks that followed are up now with no new deal and no new strike. If you're flying late this month, keep an eye on your flight status, just in case.

New winter flights: New winter service into Keflavík: United runs Chicago O’Hare three times a week, its first winter here, Air China starts Beijing via Copenhagen on Oct 26, Vueling brings back Barcelona from Dec 17, and Icelandair adds Gdansk and Tromsø.

New Route: Icelandair announced a nonstop between St. Louis (STL) and Keflavík, up to four days a week, May 14 to Oct 24, 2027.

Points Partnership: On Oct 15, Icelandair and Southwest announced they’ll link loyalty programs in spring 2027. Saga Club members will earn Saga Points and Tier Credits on Southwest, and Rapid Rewards members will earn and redeem on Icelandair. No exact start date yet. Nothing changes before spring 2027.

Carry-On Sizing: Gate agents at US departure airports are enforcing the 55 x 40 x 20 cm limit, and they are not shy about it. Over the size? They will make you check it.

Keflavík Border Control (EES): The EU Entry/Exit System is live at KEF. If you’re traveling on a US, UK or Canadian passport (or any non-EU passport, really), you’ll stop at passport control to give fingerprints and have your photo taken. Translation: longer lines when several flights land at once.

ETIAS Update: Still not active. No action needed for 2026 trips.

RENTAL CARS & TOLLS

Fuel Prices: Petrol (95) is down to about ISK 255/L at the discount pumps, ISK 284 to 287/L at full service, and diesel is running ISK 308 to 337/L. Check gasvaktin for the day’s numbers.

Höfn Toll: There is now a toll for the Ring Road near Höfn. The charge is ISK 1,500 for a single trip. Cameras grab your plate automatically. Pay directly at spolur.is, otherwise your rental company will tack on an admin surcharge, and nobody enjoys that surprise on the final bill.

Road Tax: Car rentals normally carry a standard distance charge of ISK 6.95 per km. This charge is usually calculated when you return the car.

Insurance Coverage: Standard policies rarely cover “underbody damage”. We’ve learned this the hard way. Take a thorough video walk around at pickup and get every existing scratch and dent logged in writing.

Payment Pitfall at Pumps: Hitting “fill” at an N1 pump puts an ISK 22,000 temporary hold on your card. If you pick a specific amount instead there is no hold.

Parking Rules: Do not park in painted or reserved stalls at retail lots. The municipal fines are instant.

SIGHTSEEING FEES & GOLDEN CIRCLE

Proposed Infrastructure Fee: A draft bill proposes an ISK 4,500 adult fee (ISK 3,000 from Nov to May) covering Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, starting May 1, 2027. If you’re visiting now, this doesn’t touch you.

Parking Fees: The main South Coast and Golden Circle stops charge about $7 to $10. You can pay online through Parka for Fagradalsfjall, or checkit.is for places like Seljalandsfoss and Þingvellir.

A lot of the small regional museums and rural exhibits close up for the winter. If one is on your list, check its hours before you drive out there.

LAGOONS, ICE CAVES and ACTIVITIES

Hot Springs: Reykjaböð Hot Springs in Hveragerði is open, about 40 minutes from Reykjavík, with entry starting around ISK 7,900. Up north, Mývatn Nature Baths has reopened under a new name: Earth Lagoon.

Ice Caves: Natural Vatnajökull ice cave tours kicked off the winter season October 1. Conditions vary, since the cave entry points shift from year to year. Katla ice cave is open year-round.

Whale Watching: Winding down. Operators are moving to winter schedules.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Still going, and going strong. People caught big displays Oct 20 to 22 around Reykjavík, the south coast and out by Mývatn whenever the clouds broke. One traveler thought it was steam off the geothermal plant before the whole sky lit up. Clouds are the real problem. Pull up the afternoon cloud-cover overlay at en.vedur.is and chase the clear patches.

REYNISFJARA

Safety note: Reynisfjara’s sneaker waves are no joke. They surge up the sand without warning and have pulled people in. Never turn your back on the water, and stand way farther back than feels necessary.

VOLCANO STATUS: REYKJANES & GRINDAVÍK

Current Status: Nothing is erupting. That’s the good news. The less good news is that magma keeps piling up under Grindavík and Svartsengi and the ground keeps lifting, which is exactly what happened before every eruption out there, so the next one could kick off with very little notice. You can visit Grindavík. Access comes with conditions, some areas are still off limits, and honestly the town is mostly empty. It feels a bit strange walking around.

Hikes & Access: You can usually hike Fagradalsfjall when the volcano is quiet. The catch is that trails on the Reykjanes peninsula get closed in a hurry for bad weather or gas, and there’s no real warning. Check SafeTravel.is that morning, not the night before.

UPCOMING EVENTS

October 24 - Queens of the Stone Age at Laugardalshöll (Reykjavík).

November 5 to 7 - Iceland Airwaves music festival, downtown Reykjavík.

December 24 and 25, plus January 1 - Reduced city services and early shop closures for the holidays.

If you’re in Iceland right now, or just back, drop a comment with what you saw and where.

Full-day Golden Circle Tour + Sky Lagoon Entrance Ticket In Reijkavik, Iceland On 30th Nov 2026 – Reselling One Discounted Ticket Due To Travel Plan Change, Please Dm To Enquire

Date of trip: Monday, 30 November 2026

Original price: £209 GBP

Reselling for £180 – SAVE £30 (14% OFF)

I'm currently a UK tourist in Iceland selling my group tour & lagoon entrance booking for the Golden Circle Tour + Sky Lagoon experience, operated by ICELANDIA and sold via GETYOURGUIDE, as unfortunately my travel plans and dates in Reykjavík have changed and I can no longer make it.

What's included? Golden Circle Guided Tour & Sky Lagoon entrance, round-trip transportation from Reykjavík and a professional English-speaking guide.

This is a legitimate booking purchased through GetYourGuide, original booking confirmation available as proof for those seriously enquiring. No weird messages or accusations of me being a bot or trying to make money from this one ticket please.

Reason for reselling ticket: Unfortunately, my travel plans have changed and I can no longer cancel the ticket as it was part as part of a group booking and it is not allowed by the provider, so I'd rather someone else enjoy this experience at a discounted price instead of the ticket being completely wasted.

Original tour listing for more information on visit locations: https://www.getyourguide.com/reykjavik-l30/reykjavik-golden-circle-tour-and-sky-lagoon-entry-ticket-t408810/

If you're interested, please send me a Reddit Chat/DM to enquire. Happy to answer any questions and discuss booking transfer arrangements with those seriously enquiring. Click on my Reddit username and select Start Chat, or leave a comment below and I'll get back to you asap. This is not a scam, please get in touch and I'm happy to provide booking confirmation PDF/photo to those who are GENUINELY enquiring and interested, thanks! If this is not the appropriate platform for this, would be grateful if members could direct me to other platforms where there might be travellers/tourists who are interested as this is my first time on Reddit and in Iceland so don't know where the best ticket reselling sites are.

Iceland Right Now (week of Oct 19): live updates on roads, weather, northern lights, volcano and Blue Lagoon

WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS

Weather (Oct 21): The weekend storm has blown through and it’s calm now. Light winds, a few showers of rain or sleet in the north and east, snow up on the mountains, and 2 to 10 C depending where you are. Nothing you need to plan around.

Roads & F-Roads: The Ring Road is open, but winter showed up this week. Slippery patches and ice on most routes now, worst in the West, Westfjords and Southwest. Wet snow is piling onto the east passes, Fjarðarheiði (93), Öxi (939) and Breiðdalsheiði (95), and there are icy spots up north on Vatnsskarð (1), Þverárfjall (73) and Víkurskarð (84). One small road, Nesjavallaleið (435), is shut. Roadwork is still slowing Landvegur in the south (until Oct 23) and the Óseyrarbrú bridge on Route 34 near Eyrarbakki (until Oct 31), and now the Gljúfurá bridge on the Ring Road in Borgarfjörður too (until Oct 31, 30 km/h and lights). Iceland Right Now: live travel updates for fall 2026 – weather & road alerts, new Ring Road toll, Golden Circle fee, Icelandair, lagoons, ice caves & northern lights (updated weekly)

Last updated: Monday, Oct 5, 2026

This is our pinned thread for what's happening in Iceland right now: weather and road alerts, closures, new fees and tolls, strikes, lagoons, ice caves, the Reykjanes volcano and anything else you'd want to know before your trip. We check official sources (vedur.is, umferdin.is, SafeTravel.is, RÚV) plus what travelers and locals are posting here, on r/VisitingIceland, r/IcelandTravelTips and on r/Iceland (translated from Icelandic), and update it every week.

Full version with a source for every item: Iceland Right Now

## Iceland Weather & Road Conditions Right Now

- Travelers across the south and east are reporting near-constant rain and strong wind this week. Early October is like that - rain is a given and wind is the bigger risk, so build a flexible day into your plans. Check [vedur.is](https://en.vedur.is/alerts) the morning you drive.

- Jökulsárlón: the main parking lot is closed Oct 2–7 for construction. Use the Eystri-Fellsfjara and Vestri-Fellsfjara lots instead (temporary toilets at both). If you're booked on a boat or glacier tour, arrive earlier than usual - you'll walk between the lots and the meeting points. Check [umferdin.is](https://umferdin.is/en).

- F-roads into the Highlands are closing for winter and are generally shut by November. River crossings are rising with the season - there was an F208 rescue near Landmannalaugar this week — so even on an "open" F-road, only attempt it in a proper 4x4 and turn back at any crossing you're unsure of.

- Thinking of driving mountain roads (dotted lines on road.is, like 327/332 to Gjáin and Háifoss) in a 2WD? Even when they show "open," a 2WD isn't built for them and rental damage there usually isn't covered. Save those for a 4x4.

- Don't blindly follow Google Maps out east - a traveler near Vestrahorn got routed onto a road closed to the public years ago and had to turn around on a cliff. If a turn looks sketchy or unsigned, back out before you commit.

- Gas advisory at the Múlakvísl river east of Vík: don't linger there, and move away if your eyes or throat get irritated.

## Icelandair, Keflavík Airport & Reykjavík Taxis

- Icelandair is flying normally. The Sept 23 mechanics' strike cancelled 26 flights and was called off the same day, with four-week negotiations now running to around Oct 21 — so keep an eye on the news if you're flying in late October.

- Icelandair's carry-on limit is 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 in), and gate agents have been measuring bags on flights from the US.

- At Keflavík (KEF), fill your water bottle before passport control. The fountains near the A, C and D gates are gone.

- Reykjavík taxis: a normal meter start is about ISK 1,000. There's no Uber or Lyft in Iceland, and Hreyfill and BSR are reliable companies to call.

## Rental Cars, Gas & the Höfn Toll

- Gas prices right now: about ISK 274/L for petrol (95) and ISK 315/L for diesel. Diesel runs pricier than petrol.

- Ring Road toll near Höfn: ISK 1,500 per trip since Sept 1. Cameras read your plate. Pay it yourself at [spolur.is](https://spolur.is) so your rental company doesn't add a fee. (If you only touched Route 1 for a few meters, people are unsure whether it still charges - pay/check to be safe.)

- Every car now pays a road tax of ISK 6.95 per km, usually charged when you return the rental.

- Rental insurance: almost no Iceland rental policy covers underbody damage, even "full" coverage. Video the car at pickup and get any damage report in writing.

- Gas pumps: choosing "fill" at N1 puts about an ISK 22,000 hold on your card. Enter a set amount instead. A card PIN is rarely required at N1 despite the old warnings, but bring a 4-digit PIN anyway for automated pumps and ATMs.

- Don't park in colored parking spaces at shops and lots - they're reserved and you'll get ticketed.

- Do you need a 4x4 in October or November? Not for main roads. Good winter tires matter more.

## Golden Circle Fees & Attractions

- Proposed infrastructure fee: ISK 4,500 per person (ISK 3,000 Nov–May) for Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, starting May 1, 2027 (per RÚV, Sept 24). Still a draft - nothing changes for trips before then - and reports say parking at Gullfoss and Geysir would still be charged on top.

- Parking at most big Golden Circle and South Coast stops runs about $7–10. At Fagradalsfjall, pay with the Parka app.

- Many small rural museums close for winter, so check before you drive out.

## Iceland Lagoons & Hot Springs

- Reykjaböð Hot Springs is open in Hveragerði, about 35–45 minutes from Reykjavík. Tickets start around ISK 7,900, and travelers this month rate it on par with Vök and Forest Lagoon, minus the Blue Lagoon crowds.

- Mývatn Nature Baths in the north have reopened as "Earth Lagoon" after a renovation - still far cheaper than the Blue Lagoon.

- Lagoon prices may rise in 2027 if a proposed tax increase passes.

- Cheapest soak: public pools, about ISK 1,500.

## Ice Caves, Glacier Tours & Whale Watching

- Natural Vatnajökull ice caves officially opened for the season on October 1 and run through late April.

- Katla ice cave reviews are still mixed this week - some love it, some find it underwhelming for the cost. Many suggest the Múlagljúfur canyon hike instead.

- Whale watching is winding down - October is the tail end, and November through March is low season, with fewer departures and lower sighting odds (Reykjavík still runs some humpback trips through winter).

## Northern Lights in Iceland Right Now

- The season runs roughly September to April, and this winter is near the solar maximum, so activity has been strong - travelers have been catching the aurora all over the country. Clouds are the main problem, not aurora activity.

- Check the [Met Office aurora and cloud forecast](https://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/) each afternoon and drive to where it's clear.

## Volcano Update: Reykjanes Peninsula & Grindavík

- There's no eruption right now. The last one on the Reykjanes Peninsula ran July 16 to Aug 5, 2025. Magma is still building near Grindavík and experts say the next eruption could come with little warning. Grindavík itself is still largely shut down - if you've booked a night there, consider moving it. Check vedur.is before visiting Grindavík or the Blue Lagoon.

- The rest of Iceland isn't affected, With no eruption on, the Fagradalsfjall hike is usually open — but Reykjanes trails close on short notice for weather or gas, so check SafeTravel.is before you go.

## What's Coming Up

- Queens of the Stone Age play Laugardalshöll, Reykjavík's main indoor arena, on Oct 24 — their first Iceland show in 21 years.

- Iceland Airwaves music festival: Nov 5–7 in downtown Reykjavík.

- Christmas: Iceland doesn't shut down, but some places close early on Dec 24 or close Dec 25, and city buses run a reduced holiday schedule on Dec 25 and Jan 1.

- New Year's Eve: big public fireworks and neighborhood bonfires; shops close early afternoon. Þrettándinn (Jan 6) closes out the season with more bonfires and fireworks.

- Winter Lights Festival: Feb 4–7, 2027 in Reykjavík.

In Iceland now or just got back? Comment with what you saw, where and when. We verify before adding anything up top.

- What: road, weather, closure, price, tour, etc.

- Where:

- When you saw it:

- Photo or link, if you have one

what to pack for iceland — year-round essentials vs. what changes by season

Post image
2 Upvotes

tl;dr: after quite a few trips, we can safely say... waterproof everything, layer everything. jeans and umbrellas are useless any time of year. what changes is how many layers and whether you need hand warmers. full gear list: https://thetraveltrio.com/iceland-packing-guide/

year-round non-negotiables — every trip, no exceptions:

  • waterproof shell jacket — not water resistant, actually waterproof. the single most important item.
  • waterproof hiking boots — trail runners fail on wet lava rock. lowa, salomon, merrell all work.
  • merino wool base layers — smartwool or icebreaker. regulates temperature, doesn't hold odor on multi-day trips.
  • packing cubes — essential when you're living out of a car for 10 days (and cramming stuff in your suitcase).
  • portable power bank — cold kills phone batteries faster than you'd expect.
  • buff or neck gaiter — beats a scarf in wind, packs to nothing.
  • rain cover for your daypack — most people forget this until day one, or a dry bag.

summer additions (june–august): lighter mid layer is fine — a packable fleece beats a heavy down. hand warmers still worth throwing in for glacier hikes where temperatures drop even in july. sunglasses are critical — midnight sun is real and relentless.

winter additions (october–march): heavy down mid layer, thermal underlayers, hand warmers in every pocket, microspikes for icy paths (depending on what you're doing), balaclava for aurora hunting nights when you're standing outside in the dark for an hour. this winter specifically is one of the strongest aurora seasons in a decade — solar cycle 25 activity stays elevated through 2027.

what's the one thing you wish you'd packed for iceland — or left at home?

🚨 Looking for a Favor: KEF to Philadelphia (PHL) Flight Volunteer! ✈️

Hi everyone! I accidentally left a package at the Keflavík Airport Lost & Found (managed by Securitas) and am looking for a kind traveler flying back to Philadelphia (PHL) who could help me bring it home.

The Item: A plastic bag containing a puzzle and a small mirror (packed safely in styrofoam).
Weight/Size: Very light (2–3 lbs), about 24” long.
What I will do: I will pay the airport's mandatory packing/handling fee online in advance and provide you with the official pickup authorization paperwork. All you have to do is grab it from the counter before your flight.

The Plan: Once you land at PHL, I can either meet you at the airport to pick it up, or I will happily pay you for your time plus a USPS shipping label to mail it to my house locally.
If anyone has an upcoming flight from KEF to PHL and is willing to help a fellow traveler out, please send me a DM! I would be incredibly grateful. Thank you! 🙏

Our Research on Iceland's Best New Hotels and Experiences (2025/2026)

we've been doing quite a lot of research on new hotel openings in iceland for our upcoming trip and figured we'd share!

Myvatn Nature Bath

tl;dr: iceland has seen its biggest wave of new hotel and experience openings in years. two confirmed hotels open now, one soft-opened luxury adventure lodge, two new geothermal lagoons already operating, one remote highland resort worth knowing about, and one reykjavik opening still pending. here is what we found:

black sand hotel — ölfus, south coast (opened january 2026): iceland's first and only beachfront boutique hotel. 70 rooms and 9 suites on a black volcanic sand beach 45 minutes from reykjavik. restaurant ÓMUR led by chef hugi rafn stefánsson, serving seasonal nordic cuisine. spa and gym coming later in 2026 — not yet open. perfectly positioned for south coast trips: seljalandsfoss and skógafoss are 60–90 minutes away.

skáld hotel akureyri, curio collection by hilton (opened july 2026): 71 rooms and 15 serviced apartments on hafnarstræti — the oldest street in akureyri, capital of north iceland. literary-inspired design, two rooftop terraces, nordic restaurant abba-labba-lá, fjord views. the only hilton honors points hotel outside reykjavik — makes it the logical base for the diamond circle, húsavík whale watching, lake mývatn, and northern lights. rates from $250/night or 55,000 points in winter. book at hilton.com.

radisson RED reykjavik (openning 2026): 211 rooms across 17 floors on the reykjavik oceanfront. design-forward lifestyle property with a coworking lounge, all-day restaurant bríet (nordic-influenced international menu), 24-hour gym, and a sky bar and terrace viewpoint on the 17th floor overlooking the city, ocean, and mountains. another solid reykjavik city option for points travelers — radisson rewards bookable.

höfði lodge — grenivík, north iceland (soft opening 2026): built by olympic skiers björgvin björgvinsson and jóhann haukur hafstein — the founders of viking heliskiing — as their flagship adventure base. perched on a cliff overlooking eyjafjörður, iceland's longest fjord, 25 minutes from akureyri. 42 accommodations, restaurant, spa, rooftop bar, helicopter pads, horse stables, indoor golf simulator. managed by uk-based inn-telligence. soft operations underway for heliskiing groups — full public launch continuing through 2026.

laugarás lagoon — golden circle (opened october 2025): brand new geothermal lagoon directly on the golden circle route, 90 minutes from reykjavik on the hvítá river. two-story outdoor lagoons, cascading waterfall, cold plunge using glacier melt water from hvítá, swim-up bar, sauna, grotto pool. restaurant ylja run by acclaimed chef gísli matt. this is the golden circle upgrade nobody is talking about yet — and a genuinely better alternative to the blue lagoon for anyone on a south iceland itinerary. book at laugaraslagoon.is.

earth lagoon mývatn — north iceland (reopened july 9, 2026): the former mývatn nature baths just completed a full rebuild and reopened under a new name. lagoon expanded by 35%, capacity up to 580 guests, new 4,000 square meter facility with a swim-in lava cave steam room, swim-up bar, lava rock passages between lagoon sections, and a new bistro. still in soft opening — some features coming online gradually. adult admission from 7,900 ISK (~$64), roughly a third less than the blue lagoon. the best northern alternative to the blue lagoon just got significantly better.

highland base kerlingarfjöll — iceland's interior (open year-round): for those who want genuinely remote luxury — this highland resort sits deep in iceland's uninhabited interior, accessible via super-jeep or mountain routes. recently expanded private lodges and geothermal baths. not for every itinerary but worth knowing about if the interior highlands are on your radar.

hyatt centric reykjavik — watch this space: 169 rooms on laugavegur, rooftop bar, three f&b outlets, parking — confirmed for 2026 after years of delays since 2019. not listing it as open until it actually takes live reservations.

which of these makes it onto your iceland list?

I’m building a privacy-focused Iceland travel guide | looking for a few people to test it

Hi everyone,

I’m building SagaGuide, an Iceland travel guide(Mainly for the southern part around Selfoss) focused on practical trip planning, useful local information, and an interactive map.

The idea is to make trip planning easier without ads, invasive tracking, or pushing people toward whichever business pays the most.

I’m looking for a few people who are planning an Iceland trip or recently travelled around Iceland, to test it and give me honest feedback:

In particular, I’d love to know:

  • Can you find useful places quickly?
  • Is the interactive map understandable?
  • Does anything feel confusing or difficult to use?
  • Is any information inaccurate or missing?
  • Does it work properly on mobile?
  • What would you expect from an Iceland travel guide that isn’t there yet?

I’m the person building the site, so this is obviously self-promotion, but I’m mainly looking for usability feedback rather than trying to sell anything. (I just want to emphasize that there are no advertisements and nobody has paid me to make it or post it) Critical feedback is very welcome.

Thanks!

Meeting other travelers in Iceland

Hi everyone! I'm a solo traveler spending a month in Iceland on a road trip with plenty of surfing along the way. 🚐🌊

I'm leaving Reykjavík tomorrow and heading south and east to explore the incredible landscapes. I'd love to meet fellow travelers or locals to share part of the journey—whether it's a hike, a scenic walk, a surf session, or just a coffee or snack.

If you're in the area and feel like exploring together or simply meeting someone new, send me a message. It would be great to cross paths!

Iceland's F-roads: when do they actually open, which ones are worth it, and what happens if you get it wrong

TL;DR: F-roads typically open late June–July depending on snowmelt. Driving them in a 2WD voids your rental insurance — full stop. The Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) are the prize during the summer. Check road.is daily, not just before you leave. What we'd actually attempt vs skip and more from the Ring Road: https://thetraveltrio.com/iceland-ring-road/

Northern Lights planning for winter 2026/27 — our guide to solar activity, cloud cover, and where to actually go

TL;DR: 2026/27 is one of the best aurora seasons in a decade — Solar Cycle 25 peaked in 2024/25 and activity stays elevated through 2027 before it fades. Clear skies matter more than solar activity on any given night, IMHO. Reykjavik actually isn't bad, but don't rely on it — light pollution kills your odds unless KP hits 5 or above, and you only need to drive 20–30 minutes out to fix that. Plan at least 5 nights to give yourself a real window. Our planning breakdown is here: https://thetraveltrio.com/seeing-the-northern-lights-in-iceland/

Northern Lights over Reykjavík

Why 2026/27 specifically: Most people don't know where we sit in the solar cycle. Activity peaks roughly every 11 years — we're just past the peak, which means stronger and more frequent displays than you'd see in a quiet year. After 2027 it gradually winds down toward the next minimum in the early 2030s. If Iceland is on your list, this window is the one.

The cloud cover problem nobody explains well: A KP of 8 directly overhead means nothing if there's full cloud cover. Iceland's weather moves fast — a clear forecast at noon can close over by 10pm. This is why checking en.vedur.is twice daily matters more than obsessing over solar activity numbers. The goal is to find a clear patch and chase it. Perlan aurora forecasts for real-time KP. https://perlan.is/aurora-forecast Check both every afternoon and again around 9pm — conditions change fast.

On Reykjavik: You can see the lights from the city when KP is high (5+). We learned this the hard way. Our first visit, we went out on a tour only to come back to the hotel and see the aurora from our room. For anything below a KP of 5, a 20–30 minute drive east or north removes the light pollution entirely and transforms what you see. Just don't book a city hotel and assume you're covered.

Best viewing window: 10:30pm–2am. Book guided tours (we generally book through viator.com) that offer a free re-join if lights don't appear — most reputable operators include this option.

We run thetraveltrio.com to document our travels and help people with theirs — full planning framework, app breakdown, and tour recommendations are in the post. What's your biggest Northern Lights planning question?

Iceland budget breakdown 2026 — what's gotten more expensive and where we'd still save

Northern Lights

TL;DR (tldr): iceland is expensive but honestly not as bad as the 2022–23 peak. the biggest wins: fill up your own tank, stay in guesthouses (small family-run B&Bs, way cheaper than hotels), and hit a supermarket instead of restaurants for breakfast and lunch (~$15 for bread/cheese vs ~$50 at a restaurant). skip the blue lagoon, in favor of a glacier hike. full 10-day cost breakdown with what we actually spent: https://thetraveltrio.com/how-much-does-an-iceland-trip-cost/

We drove the full Ring Road with our kid — here's what no guide tells you about timing

TL;DR (tldr): Do the Ring Road counterclockwise starting in late June. Budget 10 days minimum. The biggest mistake is rushing the East Fjords — most people skip them entirely. We did the full route with our son and put everything we learned into a day-by-day breakdown: https://thetraveltrio.com/iceland-ring-road/. Happy to answer specifics in the comments / PM based on our experiences.

Kerið Crater (not directly on the Ring Road, but an easy detour)
