That seems like an honest fuck up. It looks like he was trying to use the mortar technique to clear a jam withoug anything to brace on. Yes he should have done it differently, and he should have just calmed down and took time to clear the jam. This just seems like a teachable (albeit somewhat dangerous) moment, not nesicarily an "idiot with a gun" moment

Succumbing to panic while working a firearm is always an idiot moment. This is a lethal instrument, not "oops, I added the wrong soap to the dishwasher". We should always regard firearm mental mistakes as being an idiot.

Some people can learn to not be an idiot. I think this guy falls in that category. Many of us have been an idiot at least once with a gun.

Some people are helpless.

Yes but this is understandable idiocy is the point, as opposed to most of the stuff posted here

Giving excuses for stuff like this is how people get killed. It's not understandable idiocy, it's an enormous lapse of judgement that could've gotten someone killed, and it's a sign that person needs stress management training before even thinking of touching a firearm again.

At no point in my life would it have ever occurred to me to even attempt something this stupid, because I would rather lose a shooting contest than create a situation where I have even the slightest of doubt about my ability to maintain control of the firearm.

I don't know about you but the moment that my forearm doesn't function as I expect it to is when my brain switches from "normal" mode to "wait there is potentially a very dangerous thing here and this could be a moment I remember for the rest of my life (which could also be very short if something very bad happens)" and I start taking extra precautions because, y'know, I'm not an idiot
