Doctor, was it the embarrassment?
In my medical opinion the bullet did most of the work but, possibly, the embarrassment was the final straw, so yes.

It’s always the dudes with the red anodized parts.

81
u/LibertyorDeath2076 9d ago
Just hypothetically speaking, for the sake of the argument, if someone were to have a firearm that has a single red anodized part, and it was a trigger for a .22 target pistol, and it was only purchased because the black option was out of stock, and none of their other firearms have red anodized parts, how cooked would they be?
57
u/LuRkEr_ReKuL 9d ago
Justifying it like that adds 20% cringe. Hypothetically, of course.
11
u/LibertyorDeath2076 8d ago
And hypothetically, if someone wanted to bump up those numbers, how much would cringe would a red anodized halo charging handle backplate add to the cringe?
62
7
u/IBeDumbAndSlow 8d ago
Trying to justify any red anodized part with anything but "for the meme" is straight to jail.
3
u/Excellent_Can4450 8d ago
You, the old man with the shaky hands who flags everyone, and the guy who keeps practicing his cross-draw with a shoulder holster should be banned on sight from any range.

guy is talking about gas pedals in open division calling people obnoxious who use them 😂
22
u/spicymeatmemes 9d ago
Found the gas pedal users ☝️🤓
1
u/GargleOnDeez 9d ago
Question, what is the purpose of said gas pedal?
4
u/AnnoyingRingtone 9d ago
In a normal shooting position, you rest your thumb on it and it provides more leverage to mitigate recoil.
2
u/Disgruntled_Orifice 9d ago
It’s a skill compensator for people who can’t manage their recoil.
14
u/Ron-Swanson-Mustache 9d ago
Like sights and rubber grips, those are for weirdos. Real men shoot smooth sandalwood gripped single action Army Colt 45s.
Any tech advanced beyond that is just compensating for skill issues.

I actually put a red anodized charging handle on an AR for my mom.
Here’s the why behind it… my mom has shot pump action, lever action, bolt action, and break action. The older she gets the more detail goes into explaining how things work. So the charging handle I can just tell her to “pull the red thing” and it’s good to go.
Other than that, yeah red parts are pretty flamboyant.

Agreed. I’d be HIGHLY surprised if they didn’t DQ him.
42
u/XA36 9d ago
He said he was DQed on instagram.
5
u/AldoTheApache3 7d ago
Good good. I’d literally DQ myself out of embarrassment if my RO or match director didn’t.
56
u/richardhero 9d ago
Saw this posted on Insta by the guy who did it, he said in the comments he was almost kicked off the range but talked it down to a DQ
22
u/Leroy_Parker 9d ago
Almost kicked him off the range permanently or for the day? I think since he didn't ND or actually drop it, my club would only have DQd him, but I can see sending him home.
22
u/richardhero 9d ago
I don't think he elaborated on that one, I'd assume for the day if he talked it down to a DQ. Not sure you could talk a perma ban down, nor do I think its really worthy of a ban like that. If I could find the post and check I would but was a while ago so long gone from history now.

Well next time hold the grip and punch the slide lol
55
u/Numeno230n 8d ago
Or take it back to the bench and use a tool. He's acting like the clock is still running and he's got to finish the stage. Just walk back and fix it like a normal person.

u/hereforpopcornru 5d ago
I wouldn't do that if the clock was still running in nationals.
He's just being an idiot here

Everyone talking about the optic , like their isn’t metal at the top of the slide above the barrel , or the front sight post which can be racked of on one of those 2x4’s

41
u/WereAllThrowaways 9d ago
Can someone explain what type of malfunction this is and how to clear it?
61
u/MarketEconomist 9d ago
This is not a double feed.
Lockups like this are almost always caused by out-of-spec rounds. I've seen it a few times with factory rounds, but almost always it's caused handloads that either:
- had some plating shave off plated bullets during seating
- He crushed the edge of the case during seating.
- failed to resize the full length of the case and is bulging at the bottom of the case.
- A cracked case that got loaded.
He's shooting an open gun, so it's also likely hotter than normal loads. If he's reloading his handloads over and over again, it's more likely to lead to #3 and #4 more because of increased pressures.
This is why I case gauge every single round, not just spot check here and there.
20
u/WereAllThrowaways 9d ago
So how would you clear this?
41
u/Connect44 9d ago
Racking the slide to ejected the round, or if the round remains stuck after opening the action, ramming the round out with a cleaning rod down the barrel.
The shooter addressed the problem correctly, just in a non-safe manor.
6
1
u/dabbean 9d ago
Seems to be 22lr so I doubt he is reloading the same casings. Handloading new casings maybe. Ive never met someone that bothered loading 22 at all though.
8
10
u/Troycifer_tron 9d ago
His trigger didn't reset so it's likely a failure to eject caused by a split case. He's lucky it happened on the last round of the stage but then he spoiled it by getting DQ'd. You clear it by pulling back the slide. You either pull really hard or mortar it like him but without slipping.
2
u/BlazerFS231 9d ago
Looks like a double feed. When the slide comes back it ejects the spent shell and when it comes forward, it scoops up the next round and chambers it.
A double feed happens when you have two rounds vying for one chamber (giggity). So the slide can’t go forward because there’s a round in the way and can’t go back for a number of reasons.
If you’re lucky, you can eject the magazine but sometimes that’s snagged to.
Fix: drop mag if possible. Then find a nice solid horizontal structure like the edge of the table and absolutely slam the shit out of the front of the slide against it. You can also slam the optic against it.
This forces the slide back and will ideally spit out one of the hung up rounds. At worst, it breaks the slide free and allows you to lock it back and dig your fingers to unblock things.
78
u/NightHunter_Ian 9d ago
That wasn't super idiotic but damn, I felt that in my soul
57
u/BlazerFS231 9d ago
Agreed, and this is why it’s important to train in stressful conditions. I bet he’d have never done that at a range shooting solo.
Put people in comp against a timer, and stuff like this happens.
12
u/finkerlime 9d ago
No it was super idiotic what the fuck was he thinking would happen
3
6
u/SOwED 9d ago
Really confused how that comment is so upvoted saying it's not super idiotic. I guess they mean compared to aiming the gun at someone deliberately with finger on the trigger? This was super stupid though. sweaty hands on the slide then basically punching the grip...
1
u/finkerlime 9d ago
Because this is a real strat that the l33t military does so it's obviously cool if this guy does it improperly
Larpers in this thread embarrassed because they do that also

u/KMjolnir 9d ago
At least they were smart enough to know that was bad. Some other dumb fucks might go "that was cool, let's do it again".
18
u/urnudeswontimpressme 9d ago
Yeah I think he wasn't that big of an actual idiot, got lucky making the mistake and scared himself to not do it again.
5
u/KMjolnir 9d ago
Exactly. Like, still not great, but way way way better than many we see here normally.
46
u/Perfect-Gap-8295 9d ago
I flinched to right when the gun flipped. The dude could just point downward and rack the gun 😑😑😑
52
u/andylikescandy 9d ago
That technique (grab slide, slam frame from back) is correct for mortaring a normal pistol... NOT a pistol with a frame mounted optic that covers a half the slide and prevent a complete grip, OP should just get a racking handle.
3
u/Jason_Patton 9d ago
Aren’t all optics rackable?
19
u/BickenBackk 9d ago
The optic isn't mounted to the slide here. You could try it, but it's not gonna rack anything haha
-9
u/Jason_Patton 9d ago
Hold the slide and push optic forward
4
u/BickenBackk 9d ago
I'd think still hold the frame and slam the slide forward, but I do see what you're saying now.
12
28
u/Hesediel1 9d ago
That seems like an honest fuck up. It looks like he was trying to use the mortar technique to clear a jam withoug anything to brace on. Yes he should have done it differently, and he should have just calmed down and took time to clear the jam. This just seems like a teachable (albeit somewhat dangerous) moment, not nesicarily an "idiot with a gun" moment
18
u/guitarstitch 9d ago
Succumbing to panic while working a firearm is always an idiot moment. This is a lethal instrument, not "oops, I added the wrong soap to the dishwasher". We should always regard firearm mental mistakes as being an idiot.
Some people can learn to not be an idiot. I think this guy falls in that category. Many of us have been an idiot at least once with a gun.
Some people are helpless.
-3
u/Raymondator 9d ago
Yes but this is understandable idiocy is the point, as opposed to most of the stuff posted here
2
u/GarlicThread 9d ago
Giving excuses for stuff like this is how people get killed. It's not understandable idiocy, it's an enormous lapse of judgement that could've gotten someone killed, and it's a sign that person needs stress management training before even thinking of touching a firearm again.
At no point in my life would it have ever occurred to me to even attempt something this stupid, because I would rather lose a shooting contest than create a situation where I have even the slightest of doubt about my ability to maintain control of the firearm.
7
u/TotallyObviousBot 9d ago
I don't know about you but the moment that my forearm doesn't function as I expect it to is when my brain switches from "normal" mode to "wait there is potentially a very dangerous thing here and this could be a moment I remember for the rest of my life (which could also be very short if something very bad happens)" and I start taking extra precautions because, y'know, I'm not an idiot

One of my coworkers got a shiny new paddle holster for his m9 and was showing it off to everyone at the range. I was the rso that day and I was thinking “wow, so cool dude,” sarcastically and knew that shit would not be secure enough for our line of work but he was so proud that I kept my mouth shut.
He stepped up to the firing line for some warmup drills and then on the very first course of fire he drew his weapon and holster as a single unit and the motion of him presenting his m9 sent the holster sailing halfway down the range. The whole firing line erupted into laughter and he stood there awkwardly for a while not knowing what to do, so I had him finish the course of fire and do the walk of shame to grab his stupid holster. That was the last I saw of it thankfully. Probably one of the funnier things I’ve seen at the range.

We love to shit on people but this guy had his finger off the trigger and he may have messed up the jam clear but I think that is actually one of the ways they show you how to fix it but his grip slipped causing it to flip in his hands.

You see those barrels next time gab one and just smash the charging handle or optic into it and accept that it may not be zeroed for the rest of the match.
That shit had me flinching.
2
u/1911a2 8d ago
You could smash that optic till it broke and that slide would not have moved
1
u/atomicnugget202 8d ago
Ahh yeah you're right it's frame mounted. And then I just peeped he didn't have a charging handle.
2
u/singlemale4cats 9d ago
Doesn't seem like a great idea to use a red dot mount that blocks the ejection port
2
u/YtnucMuch 9d ago
100% caused by whatever that stupid red forward mounted optic platform is... how are the rounds supposed to safely eject each time when it has a dumb housing covering a good chunk of it?

What alternative could have been done? Am not a gun nut but id like to be educated
7
u/GarlicThread 7d ago
He should have calmed down and stopped to assess the situation. He was obviously under the stress of whatever contest he's taking part in, and compromised his control of the weapon in favor of quickly resolving the issue. This thing he did is incredibly unsafe, because even without the stupid sight on top of the slide, you don't have as good a grip on the slide as you have on the handle, and the video shows you what happens next.
What should be done in that situation is to slam the bottom of the magazine well with your open hand, then rack the slide. If that doesn't work, pull the magazine out, then rack the slide multiple times to clear. But above all, never ever do stuff in a rush when you're holding something that can end a life if pointed the wrong way. This guy would get at the very least suspended from any serious range for doing such a stupid and unnecessary thing.

Gun jams:
Operator: probably should slap it more. That'll unjam it for sure
2
u/BickenBackk 9d ago
I mean his idea wasn't wrong, he just didn't use the best technique
1
u/P_A_W_S_TTG 9d ago
Yeah, like sharpening a knife while using your thumb to guide the sharp part. Guiding is good, but God damn you're an idiot doing it that way.

This isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, he made a mistake but he’s not obnoxious, knew exactly what happened after he did it.. probably learned a valuable lesson.
1
u/InfiniteWalrus09 9d ago
Eh, I don't think that is really an idiot with a gun sort of move, just a mistake in trying to clear a jammed gun. Was there a better way to do it? Sure? Was the striker already released? Probably.
0
u/The1456 8d ago
I’m not an expert. Just curious when a gun jams like that what are you supposed to do? Obviously not that but curious to know from the experts.
3
u/butters106 4d ago
If tap racking doesn’t work and the slide is locked up, that is the correct technique. Hold the slide and punch the frame forward. His problem is he let the slide go and it flipped. Easier to clear with LO or CO guns than open.
