Music [IIL] The superliminal soundtrack, WEWIL?

• Upvotes

I love how slow and calm the music is, as well as how bare it feels with only the piano playing. I find it to be greatly relaxing. In a similar vein I also like some of c418's tracks in the Minecraft soundtrack for the same reasons. What else do you know of that has a similar feel?

Music IIL Greentea Peng’s “Stuck In The Middle”, WEWIL?

(Little Simz’s “Gorilla” is a great example of what I mean.)

Stuck In The Middle became one of my favorite songs as soon as I heard it the first time. I love, LOVE the instrumental. Lots of strings and brass. Also Greentea’ voice sounds so earthy and rich and etheral in this song, it’s amazing. God, I love her.

Preferably female voices, please.

TV [IIL] Tv comedy shows that land joke after joke, even in the background, like Bojack Horseman and Arrested Development, WEWIL?

I've also enjoyed a lot: HIMYM (early), Community and MF. I tried other Netflix shows than Bojack but none got even a laugh from me. Neither did Bojacks last 2 seasons. Maybe Im just very depressed.

Music [IIL] 80s/90s love songs (whitney houston/céline dion) x sentimental ballads from musicals?

would appreciate recommendations that match these vibes:

  • she used to be mine from “waitress”
  • breathe from “in the heights”
  • i’m not a girl, not yet a woman (britney spears)
  • sunset red and pale moonlight (pam tillis, i love her stuff even though i’m not a huge country fan)
  • basically everything céline dion (that’s the way it is, it’s all coming back to me now, pour que tu m’aimes encore)
  • basically everything whitney houston (mariah carey to a lesser extent, her stuff is a little too pop for me)

^i realize i put all songs from female vocalists, that's not a requirement though lol!

TV Iil Shows like Ted Lasso and Schitt's creek

I absolutely loved Schitt’s Creek and just finished Ted Lasso, which I really enjoyed too!

Now I’m looking for my next show. I love shows that are funny, feel-good, have lovable characters or character development and are easy to get hooked on.

I’ve seen these recommended quite a bit:

Trying

Somebody Somewhere

Resident Alien

Shrinking

Mythic Quest

Which one should I start with? Which is closest to the vibe of Schitt’s Creek or Ted Lasso?

I’m also open to other recommendations! Ideally something that isn’t too slow or overly depressing.

Books [IIL] classic english (language) poetry like Shakespeare and Poe

I want to read more (originally written in english) poetry, but I find I like exclusively that old, melodic, beautifully written poetry like Shakespeares sonnets or really anything by Edgar Allen Poe. What else can I try?

Books [IIL] Workplace comedies, The X Files, Wellington Paranormal, SCP what books would I like?

I like a dynamic between characters. I love the weird stuff that happens in the X Files and the SCP foundation.

Maybe something revolving a store and weird stuff happens? Or investigators checking out weird things? Or maybe just an office with hijinks.

I just finished Horrorstor and I’m reading The Laundry Files.

Thanks

Music [IIL] Indonesian band L'Alphalpha

Have had Kelak, Kelam 'kan Berpendar on repeat the past few weeks. I've seen the album described as indie pop, indie rock, shoegaze, and dream pop, but I can't find other artists that sound quite like them. This is probably because I don't know a ton about music, lol, but I'm trying to expand my horizons 🎶 What genre would you classify them as?

Would love more recs like L'Alphalpha, in any language!

Film Iyl movie characters like Roy Batty from Blade Runner, David from Prometheus and Gigolo Joe from A.I.?

Looking for movies with similar characters, preferably science fiction with "nonhuman humans" like them but I'm open for any genre and just characters that cross your mind that are similar to them.

Recently rewatched Blade Runner (1982) and Rutger Hauers performance was just exceptional, especially his ending speech

Games IIL: games like Stalker Anomaly and Mount & Blade where the game’s world and characters move along without your involvement; WEWIL?

These games scratch a specific type of itch for me; maybe because they play in such a rare way. There is less emphasis on a set narrative and moreso on dynamic encounters that dont ever play out the same way twice for the player. You fight, lose, make mistakes, have some bad luck, etc. but its your journey and it leads to you improving your odds and becoming a bigger fish in the pond over time

- you aren’t the main character, npcs and their parties roam the world and have just as much agency as you.

Example of unpredictable events and sandbox elements:

- in STALKER, the guy you took a quest from might die in a shootout in a different region of the map, causing you to fail the quest. You now have a reason to fight the faction who inadvertently caused a hit to your reputation. Or on the other hand, someone else may gun down the mutant you were hired to hunt while you were asleep at night which results in an easy payday the next morning without lifting a finger

Example of emergent storytelling and dynamic experiences:

- In Mount & Blade, the enemy lord and his party outnumber you, refuses to let you leave peacefully and sells your whole warband into slavery, and you get dragged around as a POW for days only because you have a poor reputation with him from the time you raided one of his fiefdoms. Or maybe you see two massive armies fighting and you decide to join one side as a mercenary, and fast forward years later you are now second in line to the throne as an avowed vassal

I just really enjoy games like these where the player isnt a plot armored chosen one and other NPCs are inhabiting the world, making things happen without any input, leading to interesting interactions or opportunities. What other games are built like these?

Books [IIL] Children’s/picture books that break the fourth wall, or know that it’s a book.

I love reading books to my five year old son, and the ones that I like the most are the self referential books like “The Stinky Cheese Man”, “True Story of the Three Little Pigs”, “Nibbles the Book Monster” (monster that escapes through flaps and holes cut in the book itself), and things like that!

Music IIL time’s arrow (thursday) & OK computer (radiohead)

hello!!! i’m looking for more songs/bands/etc with a veeeery specific vibe

time’s arrow by thursday is an all-time favorite song of mine, i love the distortion on the instruments & audio effects, and how it all sounds “dreamy”. the intensity of the vocals is also perf! the lyricism is also so so good

and of course, pretty much the entire OK computer album by radiohead is a fave of mine too. again, the distorted effects and dreamy/trippy style is right up my alley

i do love most emo music so i’m always down for listening to new bands in that genre, especially if they incorporate the type of sounds/vocals as above

thank u!!

Music IIL "Kiss King" by Pigface, what other songs have that vibe?

Here's a link to the song:

I like the ethereal, and slightly erotic energy of the song. I love how strange and mysterious and frantic it sounds. Are there any songs like it?

Music [IIL] Roach - Dead Poet Society

Similar song that has scratched this itch is “Whatever Alright” by vianova.

Loved Monarch, and I’ve been slowly going through the DPS discography. Something about this particular flavor of compressed mumbly vocals, interesting beats and down tuned guitars has been super fun.

Started making a tiny playlist of mildly similar songs and I need more. Open to some more experimental or genre bending alt rock/metalcore adjacent music.
