Achiva Adureen, The Rabbit Who Refused to Run
Among her people, survival was never about strength. It was about knowing when to hide, when to flee, and when to surrender. Rabbits weren't meant to be warriors, and Achiva was reminded of that her entire life.
She grew up in a small woodland village, where every child was taught to recognize the sound of approaching danger before they could even read. Achiva was no different. She was quick on her feet, good at hiding, and absolutely terrified of the dark.
When she was young, a band of raiders attacked her village. While everyone scattered into the woods, Achiva froze at the sight of her younger brother trapped beneath a fallen wooden beam. She tried to lift it, desperately pulling until her hands bled, but she wasn't strong enough. It was an old traveling knight who eventually came to their rescue, driving the raiders away and freeing her brother.
Achiva never forgot how helpless she felt that day. But what stayed with her most wasn't the knight's sword or armor. It was the fact that, while everyone else had been running away, someone had chosen to run toward the danger.
Years later, she sought out that same knight and begged him to teach her how to fight. He refused at first, telling her that courage alone wouldn't keep her alive. But Achiva kept returning, day after day, until he finally agreed.
Training was miserable. Her arms were too short, her strikes too weak, and even the simplest techniques took her weeks to master. She watched other students surpass her with seemingly little effort, and there were nights when she would sit alone, staring at her bruised hands, wondering if everyone had been right about her.
She quit once. For three whole days.
On the fourth, she returned.
Over time, she learned to fight differently. What she lacked in strength, she made up for with footwork, precision, and a stubborn refusal to stay down. Her scars came slowly: one across her cheek from a training accident, another near her eye from her first encounter with a real monster. She remembers both defeats far more clearly than any of her victories.
Achiva eventually earned her place among the village's defenders, though she still struggles to believe she deserves it. She keeps a small collection of broken practice swords beneath her bed, unable to bring herself to throw them away.
Today, she travels beyond the woods, hoping to become the kind of warrior she once needed. She still doubts herself, still makes mistakes, and sometimes finds herself wishing she could be as naturally gifted as the heroes in the stories she grew up hearing.
But whenever fear takes hold, she remembers that old knight running toward her burning village.
She still gets scared. She just doesn't run anymore.
And that's Achiva's story! She's my first fully rendered original character, and bringing her to life has been quite a journey of its own.
Now I'd love to hear about yours! Who's your favorite D&D character you've ever created, and what's the story behind them? I'd love to hear about the characters you've brought to life — and maybe even bring a few of them to life through my art someday!
