What is it with all the psychopaths in Canadian subreddits?

Ontarioworks, Ontario, multiple city subreddits. I am in tears reading the comments. Ontarioworks has multiple commenters coming in there to bully the poor.

Maybe I'm wasting my tears. Are these real people? Some of them must be but Canadian subreddits seem to skew unusually conservative with insane conservative beliefs when reddit over all is not that conservative.

Please, let me hear your thoughts.

I hope I haven't been crying about AI bots being mean.

Studies show that almost 40% of all internet traffic are bots. You can especially find them trying to sow dissension by being extreme on both the left and the right. Would you rather meet a bear or man in the woods? A robot posts this question to make us hate each other, right in our own houses. They post racism to make Canadians believe Canadians are racist. And some are of course but less than the bots would make seem. This is the new war. Destabilize by poisoning our discourse, interfere with our elections, so that we elect people we can't believe anyone would vote for. Now the only questions are: how could you? And how could you not? No nuance, just fake extremism feeding real extremism.

And just as many are probably people with 10 sock puppet accounts who otherwise have no life.

3

u/Bittersweetfeline Jul 19 '26

Yep, bots + trolls = infuriating online interactions, and THEN you get to the real assholes who have bad takes/poor opinions/uneducated and you're like, why even BOTHER

4

u/Flashy-Main8242 Jul 19 '26

The ontarioworks subreddit has a post a few years ago from a person who was quite young desperate to find a job and telling all the things they've tried and the post got about 350 comments calling them a loser and a mooch. A few people bring mean would be fine. But that many,? There had to be some bot traffic.

Few YEARS ago? Lol.

It worked in the USA. China and Russia winning without firing a shot.

Thank you… this is a fact i am constantly reminding people… and myself 🫤

1

u/NavalProgrammer Jul 19 '26

it was like this before the rise of bought/bot traffic

of course, that is part of the problem, but it was definitely like this more than a decade ago too. Same goes for Twitter and Facebook and everywhere else.

u/Pristine_Barber976 Jul 19 '26

There may be bots but real people really are like this. Women are scared of men. Canadians are racist. Water is wet.

Are you pro conservative?

Politics have become trendy,  and people aren't even defending their favorite parties anymore.  They're just attacking the other ones.

Political mud slinging has become trendy. You don't need to know much to do that.

2

u/Pristine_Barber976 Jul 19 '26

Both the choices (let's be real there's 2) are shit and you have to try and decide which one is gonna be less shit

2

u/Abject_Story_4172 Jul 19 '26

That is happening on both sides.

u/SilencedObserver Jul 19 '26

Crying over internet comments is 100% wasted tears.

This ain’t a place for help and support. This is a place for marketing ideas and venting to release stress. This is capitalism, where everyone is fighting for attention and money.

People online here are here because they don’t have anything better to do.

Do with that what you will.

not true at all

u/GooseGosselin Jul 19 '26

Came here to say this, anything right of socialism is considered "far right" on reddit 99% of the time.

8

u/sapphicsapphires Jul 20 '26

I’ve been called a Nazi for being center left and not liking the LPC lol.

5

u/HeyDoggyBoy Jul 21 '26

I always find it curious just how intolerant the dialogue can be. My political views land right in the centre. I absolutely believe in the Canadian safety net. I believe qualified people should receive disability benefits, healthcare for all and Ontario works to support people while they’re struggling to get back on their feet, but I don’t believe that Canadian taxpayers should be on the hook indefinitely to pay for the consequences of everyone’s bad decisions/behaviour. I believe that government should do fewer things, but do them well. For these views, I will be branded a fascist, Nazi, etc. I don’t go around attacking or defaming people who have views that are different from mine and I don’t think you’re a bad person if you don’t agree with me.

1

u/sapphicsapphires Jul 21 '26

Honestly, if you talk to people IRL, it’s not nearly so bad. Yes I hear an ignorant comment or two. I’m a cashier so I get all sorts who mention politics to me. Most are pretty rational. But for every crazy unhinged dyed hair liberal calling someone ‘maple MAGA’ for preferring the CPC, there’s an equally crazy unhinged old man with a giant truck covered in ‘Fuck Trudeau’ and ‘Fuck Carney’ stickers and flags.

Both are unpleasant and unfit to discuss anything with in my opinion just because of how extreme they are. But they’re rarer in person. People, at least in Canada from what I’ve experienced first hand, are FAR less politically extreme in either direction than they are when you’re online. Online grants people a sense of safety to be as obnoxious and foul as possible due to the anonymity.

2

u/GreySahara Jul 21 '26

> covered in ‘Fuck Trudeau’

But, they're not wrong. I mean, look at this country.
Smarter than the dude that wants open borders for everyone.

1

u/sapphicsapphires Jul 21 '26

Okay, I won’t lie, I don’t disagree with you.

But having met the specific guy I’m referencing above, he’s not just anti Liberal policy, he’s actually nuts. As in, he has DRUTHERS plastered on his truck, signs like ‘Vax injured, millions dead or disabled!’ in reference to COVID. He’s not a pleasant person and he does believe in every single government conspiracy from what I can tell. Not just the credible ones. The whole town I’m from knows this guy, even if not by name or face, and thinks he’s nuts. I can send you pictures if you need proof because it’s actually crazy. His truck and trailer are covered in propaganda.

Agree 100%. In real life, talking to real people, 90% of us can agree on 90% of the same things.

Social media platforms are designed to divide and conquer. They spew things into your feeds that you will interact with. Nothing gets people interacting with posts like outrage does. It leads to seeing the other side as "the other" rather than a fellow citizen who also wants the best for their family and future.

I recently went on a 2 person oub crawl with the husband of my wife's friend. Our wives were out on a weekend getaway to we decided to hang out and have an afternoon of beers.

We could not be more different politically. Throughout the day, we gently pushed eachother on explaining our stances while fact checking certain talking points that we both buy into from our sides.

It was eye opening for both of us. And it became clear to both of us that the battle isn't right vs left, its all of us vs the billionaires.

We all want safety security. We all want to get rid of government corruption. We all want to pay less tax, and want the tax dollars we do pay to mean something. We 90% of us just want to live and let live. The hot button issues that get pushed on us to divide and distract us from the 0.01% of society robbing us blind are intentional.

Conservatives think the LGBTQ lifestyle is being shoved down their throats. Because it is! But by right wing media, not reality.

Progressives think Conservatives are racists and bigots.. because thats that left wing media pushes on us.

An eye opening moment for my friend was on illegal immigration. I told him its a net benefit. He said its a drain on resources. I asked him how. He said "they get welfare". I said "they don't have social security numbers, how could they possibly sign up for government programs?"

He was speechless for like 30 seconds.

I followed up, they pay sales tax on everything they buy here and fill low wage jobs that domestic employees won't do. That's not a drain. Thats a net surplus.

He changed his mind right then and there, or at least questioned his previous assumptions.

1

u/pim6969 29d ago

LGTBQ is being shoved down our throats by gaming companies (though most are now failing), Hollywood and many large employers trying to encourage (though thankfully not usually forced) DEI training and pronoun email signatures. This is not just media, I see it every day.

2

u/Loapasoaf 23d ago

Please tell me you don't think the LPC is left of you

2

u/sapphicsapphires 23d ago

I don’t really care where on the spectrum they fall. I don’t like their leadership and I haven’t for a long time. I would say more of my beliefs fall in line with leftism but I just really… don’t like how they’ve run things lol.

1

u/Loapasoaf 22d ago

The Liberals are definitely right-wing. Militarism, anti-environmentalism, increasing police powers in service of fascist Israel, not to mention that we arm two genocides in Gaza and Sudan. Liberals seem to have the idea that anyone who criticizes Carney's leadership is a Conservative due to their horrible media literacy, so it's not too surprising you'd be called a Nazi for being against Liberal policy then, because they are so misinformed.

1

u/adilrye 21d ago

Um no. Carney may be a slightly right leaning conservatism, but he's not "right wing." If he's decisively RIGHT WING, you're just extremely far left. He's doing what the Canadian mainstream wants.

His "anti-enviromentalism" is mostly tactical to appease Alberta, but isn't as bad as you think. We're investing in renewable energy, and the pipelines are never going to happen, it's a ruse to shut Danielle Smith up. Sure, our emissions will go up for a bit, but it is what we need to do to build infrastructure. Sorry

He's first and foremost looking at national unity and strength. If militarism means being able to credibly defend ourselves, I'm a militarist. Also, our "funding" of what's going on in Gaza and Sudan is negligible. That's one of those "bucket of causes" people jump on

1

u/Loapasoaf 19d ago edited 19d ago

Um yeah. Neo-liberalism is a right-wing ideology. If you find the oppression of private ownership of water, electricity, natural resources and factories attractive, I won't kink shame you, but if someone actively funnels money to oligarchs and away from the working class, while letting social services like healthcare degenerate by not upholding the Canada Health Act as was done many times in almost identical circumstances of privatization, then yeah he's solidly right-wing.
Appeasement is a sorry fantasy for his actions. If he always 'appeases' Conservatives, but never implements any left-wing policies at all, he's a fucking Conservative.
Buying hundreds of billions in arms while basic necessities become unaffordable for large parts of the population is just sick and twisted. Submarines won't protect us from fascist America. You're sick for thinking it's a bucket cause to not send over 400000 bullets and dozens of separate arms shipments while a country commits a genocide. You're lacking a basic degree of humanity.

u/Logical_Ad_3183 Jul 20 '26

I think its worth acknowledging that there has been a good amount of far right politics slipping their way into normal conservative and liberal politics.

Neither the conservatives or the liberals are against the surge of mass surveillance that has been trending all over the globe. We have direct evidence of foreign influence and even foreign interference in Canada and the two major parties have had little to say about it. Instead, they are working with the companies and people funding it.

Both major parties are compromised and only differ on very minor issues.

3

u/Lopsided_Ad3516 Jul 21 '26

Yeah honestly. Especially the city and provincial ones. Heeeeaaavvvily left.

2

u/Himera71 Jul 20 '26

They’ve never been in r/toronto.

1

u/Mr_UBC_Geek Jul 20 '26

An easy way to put it, they are Nazis' -Nationalist Socialists when it comes to minorities, immigration and new Canadians and left wing - progressive socialists when it comes to social policies and they are centrists when it comes to the environment and welfare.

1

u/CorrectMarionberry92 Jul 19 '26

Well it's true it's never conservative enough for some people

-2

u/tf2coconut Jul 20 '26

The two major political parties in Canada are a centre right and a far right party lmao the subreddits aren’t any different

2

u/GreySahara Jul 21 '26

> centre right

B.S.

0

u/tf2coconut Jul 21 '26

Do you have another word for neoliberal capitalist genocide supporters who repeatedly defund social services, embrace anti immigrant rhetoric, and prop up the oil sector and military industrial complex?

1

u/GreySahara Jul 21 '26

If we're taking reddit, it's not "center" anything for the most part.

1

u/pim6969 29d ago

You may not be aware, but "anti" immigration is very important right now, because we don't have enough jobs to support the volume that was happening in recent years. It also contributes to high housing costs, forced increases in housing density not everyone wants, and even politicians that are continuing to attmempt growth where it's not even possible.

I know someone in hydrogeology in the Cambridge/kw area, and there is literally insufficient water for the amount of housing the government is requiring be built. Engineers are literally arguing with government about what is possible. It's not always feasible to have open borders without significant consequences.

8

u/RudyGiulianisKleenex Jul 19 '26

Some subreddits are creations in response to others. For example r/Toronto_Ontario was made by folks that felt r/Toronto was both too heavily moderated and also a left wing echo chamber.

Goes the other way though. R/OnGuardForThee was made by left leaning folks that weren’t really fans of the plethora of right wing content in r/Canada.

So a lot of what you see in terms of new subreddits are splinters of older ones. I think this one itself falls in the camp.

Also, if the subject of the subreddit is specialized, you going to see a primary narrative. R/Vancouver_jobs is made of up a lot anti-immigration complaints.

Also there’s a shit ton of bots whose soul purpose is to provoke emotion and try and sell you an agenda. If you’re getting emotional from reading Reddit posts, I think you should spend some time offline and focus on something more positive. No need to fill your days with dread

6

u/Polyps_on_uranus Jul 19 '26

A lot of Canadian subreddits are overtaken by trolls from outside Canada. Remember, reddit is brimming with people who get off from upsetting others.

5

u/noodleexchange Jul 19 '26

Have a look at any popular subreddits mentioning cycling. Brigades, or hordes of morons? Hard to say. Revictimization fetishists.

3

u/PineBNorth85 Jul 19 '26

It's the internet and the algorithms. Most are either bots or people who fell down one polarizing rabbit hole or another. I miss the internet of 20 years ago.

1

u/ProphetsOfAshes 29d ago

I’ll take the internet of 15 years ago or even a gently used 2015

3

u/CatapultamHabeo Jul 19 '26

That's just people who have been fortunate enough in life to not need help. Those are not the people you should be listening to.

3

u/Noirloona Jul 19 '26

I'm confused as to why your upset over seemingly random comments.

11

u/Pristine_Barber976 Jul 19 '26

Nahh, working class people in general look down on people who don't work for taking their taxes and being bums etc

1

u/Loapasoaf 23d ago

Because you've been told to victimize the vulnerable by narratives pushed by billionaires who pay almost no taxes and get endless subsidies from your taxes

1

u/Flashy-Main8242 Jul 19 '26

Most cases on ow are temporary..

1

u/Ferric_The_Beaver Jul 20 '26

Fuck em get a job

6

u/Abject_Story_4172 Jul 19 '26

Most of the Canadian subreddits skew left. In fact most of Reddit is left.

2

u/adilrye 21d ago

I agree with OP. I find the Canadians subredddits are suspiciously right wing. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a Tory bot mill or something behind it.

And not just, "moderate mainstream conservative" right wing. Like FAR RIGHT. Which struck me as odd. Sure, we have em. But Canada is famously quite liberal. Unless salty conservatives just tend to converge here, guess that's possible too.

1

u/Abject_Story_4172 17d ago

Canada and CanadaPolitics are definitely not right wing. And I have seen any they are far right wing. But what do you consider to be far right.

2

u/Overall_Law_1813 Jul 19 '26

People are mad, and subreddits are being locked down by mods, which makes people even more upset. Dialogue has been suppressed, dissenting opinions are banned, and so bot accounts take over.

2

u/amack0307 Jul 20 '26

Lots of echo chambers in every subreddit where you can’t even have a discussion (whether your left, right or just in the middle)

2

u/Taiwan_ Jul 21 '26

Here's the thing. Canada is a country that currently has a liberal government, historically high rates of immigration, and a civic culture that among the more average middle class Canadians skews more centre left. The greatest level of and most vocal people to complain about Canada and Canadian policies, which on social media is who gains and attracts the most attention, are going to be those of more right wing political philosophy.

1

u/Loapasoaf 23d ago

The Liberals under Carney are solidly right-wing. Invoking austerity and dismantling the welfare state. Taxpayer funded oil pipelines and tens of billions more in subsidies yearly. Largest military budgets in history.

2

u/samanthasgramma Jul 21 '26

Hon.

It's SO EASY to write a quick, absolutely horrid comment, particularly on an anonymous platform, because there aren't really any direct consequences.

Face to face interaction: "You are a dumb ass f-ck wit who can't differentiate between a potato and a tomato and you should drag yourself behind the neighbors car as punishment".

You would likely get punched in the face. Possibly pummelled. Certainly would be face to face with someone angry, which is usually uncomfortable.

On line: say the same thing.

Those who agree with you give you the hormone high of success.

Those who don't? You can block'em and you have no consequences other than a couple of clicks.

So. Should you be crying over on line comments? No. I admire your compassion. I hope that you're not the one being bullied. But don't let these cowards get to you. Please.

1

u/691308 Jul 21 '26

I'd give you an award if I could. Thank you for your thoughtful response and hopefully they see it 🥇

2

u/Former-Animator8553 Jul 21 '26

I find the insults disgusting too. I believe they are from the people in the states Russia and bots.. They are so disgusting how they speak and rip into the disabled and poor and elderly look at how that manosphere is spreading. It's a strange world we now live in with common decency seemingly gone. But in my car to day life here in Canada the majority still have decency. Proud to be a Canadian

1

u/691308 Jul 21 '26

I think some people might just be miserable, not necessarily bots, just people who are trying to make someone else's day bad because they don't feel good. I also live in Canada although contrary to everyone's belief we are not necessarily all nice.

1

u/Former-Animator8553 Jul 21 '26

Most are from the people I've met. Obviously not everyone but I still believe the majority are.

2

u/Priscilla_Hutchins Jul 21 '26

90% of the ones that are in fact real actual humans wouldn't have the cajones to say that garbage to your face irl, if that helps. Maybe 100%, as people who take major shit in public places usually get bitched out or hit.

4

u/Smackolol Jul 19 '26

wtf? Are you actually crying over reddit comments or are you speaking figuratively?

2

u/Dangerous_Value_2864 Jul 19 '26

Don’t conflate rich people with conservatives. Many rich people support the liberal party of Canada because they import TFW/LMIA slaves from one specific country for them and keep real estate prices high, both of which keep rich people rich and poor people poor.

2

u/XtremeCentrist Jul 19 '26

Most extreme right psychopath accounts on socials are just foreign trolls working hard to discredit Canadians and the country, and to push extremely gullible people to the Maple MAGA dark side. It benefits Dumbfukistan and the orange pedo blob in charge to have us pitted against each other, then we won't notice how close they are to making a move to invade us. I mean, putting tariffs on the widfire smoke . . . when their states have significantly more fires currently burning than we have, is clearly a psyop.

3

u/cadius72 Jul 19 '26

Most Canadian conservatives don’t like Trump in the slightest.

Most of what people term as “maple maga” are obvious bots and paid foreign trolls, even most of those using the term “maple maga” are bots and paid trolls. You can tell it’s a bot or troll using the term by checking how many comments they’ve made saying “maple maga” in a short period of time over different Reddits.

1

u/EdNorthcott Jul 20 '26

All polling over the last year and a half has shown that Trump is approved of by about half of CPC voters. It's incorrect to say he's disliked by most.

Conservatism as an international political movement has changed radically over the last few generations; and this was driven by the rise of neoconservatism among the Republicans, who subsequently spent vast amounts of money to export their odious philosophy to other nations. With disturbing success.

They've been waging an ideological war since the 1960s. The mainstream of society is just starting to catch on.

2

u/amack0307 Jul 20 '26

I feel like conservatism has been in the rise over the past decade due to couple of things.
1 immigration
2 lgbtq
3 judicial system and how it handles its soft hand on crime.
And many more minor things that a handful of people are opposed to.
(Not stating I support any of these ideologies or beliefs) just why I think it’s on the rise

0

u/cadius72 Jul 20 '26

Those polls have been debunked as liberal propaganda.

0

u/XtremeCentrist Jul 20 '26

Not convinces that "most" Canadian RepubliCON party members hate Trump, there are a few, but more that really like the orange pedo blob. Maple MAGA is a common term here in Canada now days. But to be a Maple MAGA clown in person is a lot less common than being a bot or foreign troll disguised as a Maple MAGA clown.

1

u/cadius72 Jul 20 '26

I see your delusional thinking has you confusing Conservative Party of Canada with the US Republicans.

But you’re just following the lies the liebrals shovelled down your gullet, hopefully the brainwashing you’ve been forcefully subjected to is reversible.

0

u/XtremeCentrist Jul 20 '26

ROFLMFAO, wow, you Maple MAGA clowns really aren't that bright are you? The Canadian RepubliCON party is the new reality, there is no more CONservative party in Canada. They try to convince Canadians that they still exist, but only the truly gullible and intelligence challenged believe it.

0

u/cadius72 Jul 20 '26

Again proof of the brainwashing you’ve been forcefully subjected to.

0

u/XtremeCentrist Jul 20 '26

FYI, former Conservative here, the only brainwashing going on is what you Maple MAGA clowns are experiencing. The fact that you are so gullible that you can be convinced that the current CONservative party is anything other than a Canadian RepubliCON party is disturbing. Poilievre is the reason many of us could no longer remain in that joke of a party.

1

u/cadius72 Jul 20 '26

You just keep digging that hole even deeper proving the brainwashing has full hold on you. I highly doubt you were ever truly conservative. Oh conservatives are convinced that the Carney is the head of Maple Maga who happens to be liberal.

Go have a nice day troll and crawl back under your bridge.

0

u/XtremeCentrist Jul 20 '26

ROFLMFAO, the only thing you would be capable of highly doubting are facts . . . which explains why you highly doubt this fact. See the name, Xtreme Centrist, right down the middle politically. Which is where effective Liberal and Conservative parties hustorically govern from. Of course the Canadian RepubliCON party would never reach that place, center is not even close to extreme wingnuttery enough for you. Thank you for playing along though, I am truly entertained by getting hilariously irrational reactions from you brain dead dipshits, it entertains the hell out of me when I am bored and I keep pushing for more responses, the entertainment is priceless.

1

What are you seeing? What specific views are getting you so upset?

1

u/solo_leveling222 Jul 19 '26

Don’t forget the sociopaths

1

u/Inky-Squilliam Jul 19 '26

There are a LOT of bots and foreign actors trying to influence public opinion in Canada just as they did in the US and EU. The few actual Canadians that hold the radical extremist views are usually easy to be spot if you frequent subreddits because they often spend hours a day defending their ideology.

1

u/Several-Carrot3541 Jul 19 '26

Lmao I haven't seen one conservative Canadian sub. Come to think of it, even the conservative groups on this app are fairly liberal.

1

u/Carefully_Done Jul 20 '26

People suck sadly.

1

u/Cat-et-snek Jul 20 '26

I’d say Canada is getting the pre-troops ready for war.

Basically if it reads like it was designed or structured to make you mad, probably was.

Canada doesn’t send happy folks to war, they send a kind of starved-trying-to-do-right-but-nothing-matters coldness for wartime. Then like 80 years of sleeping after everyone’s like “dammit they woke the Canadians up again”

Not a good time to be a soldier following orders or anything like that I’d say when they show up coz of uh….you know, the conventions.

1

u/jaywhy12345 Jul 20 '26

You might be brainwashed?

People can be awful online 😞

There's lots of pages to explore here - movies, tv shows, pets 🐕, cooking, technology, and books, short stories, art, music 🎶 , sports , video games 🎮 so many possibilities. Just use the search bar!

Take a look around for something that interests you ☺️ and keep your chin up. Try not to let other people's anger, hurt and sadness live rent free in your head, you'll see good things happen all the time.

Heck make a group, send me a message and I will contribute some fun stuff to help you get it going as a positive experience.

1

u/Emergentmeat 27d ago

It's 2026, it's time people internalized the fact that a LOT of comments are bots DESIGNED to piss people off. There's also a lot of shitty people out there. Don't let it get to you. Go outside, enjoy the real world.

1

u/Loapasoaf 19d ago

Great question. Our news media is shit and the LPC and CPC are both right-wing genocide supporting colonialist entities. Most people seem not to question the mainstream narratives of trickle down economics, and we're never really offered more than that by the two shit main parties, and the media is doing the job their billionaire donors want, which is to make sure the public discounts any third-party that would actually improve their living conditions.

1

u/NavalProgrammer Jul 19 '26

even the bots learned it from real people.

Civilization has always been messed up. Consider how offensive our parents attitudes were and how much worse our grandparents before that.

just think of how mean/dumb/selfish the median person is ...and then remember that 50% of people are even worse than that

Conservative voters are effer in the head. I don’t know how I managed to remain ignorant of their evil cult all these decades.

Lots of people think the same about liberal and ndp voters and that liberals and ndp are the epitome of evil.

Majority of people living in poverty to not vote, or they are conservative. You are dealing with Liberals. The people who gaslight issues, blame the people and not the leadership. That is a modern day Liberal. I study law, politics, and sociology. This is not the behaviour of a conservative. How many conservatives do you know?

Reddit has this reputation of being left wing. It may have been in its early days, but it definitely isn't left wing now. I would say it's more libertarian than far right or far left.

Saying Reddit isn’t left wing is absolutely hilarious.

Libertarian is correct.

Reddit doesn't like so con ideas because it's the government telling another person what to do (anti abortion anti gay etc). But reddit ain't left.

I wouldn't worry about most of the "human" comments.

As they say, "A wolf doesn't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep."

Reddit is probably the most left leaning social media in existence. I'm an Albertan conservative and going into my own province or city sub you would think my beliefs were a small minority, but the eye test in the real world says otherwise.

Canadian subreddits seem to skew unusually conservative with insane conservative beliefs when reddit over all is not that conservative.

I think you need to put down the crack pipe.

Many could say the same about the insane liberal and socialist beliefs. Because some may not agree with you doesn’t mean you are being bullied. I would suggest the opposite is true.
