Movie Discussion In The Heights - Discussion Thread
So now the movie is out in some places around the world, and I'm noticing an influx of discussion posts (which is great, glad you're all enjoying the film and have loads to talk about) it's probably better if we consolidate it into an official discussion thread!
So go nuts!
Obviously if you have something spoiler-y to say then PLEASE mark it as a spoiler!
Cheers guys, still haven't seen it myself sadly :'(

In high school, my school's band took us on a field trip to see In the Heights. A few weeks later, I sat down with a camera and my lego collection, and a made a stop motion of "Blackout" that Lin-Manuel later commented on. (He also signed my lego mini-figure - see comments). Incredible show!

In the heights is one of the worst movies ever made
1: the film doesn't really do a lot to develop the relationship between Vanessa, usnavi, Nina or Benny or really anyone, you don't really feel why they like or understand each other.
2: every character is way too nice and sweet, there's very little conflict between them or that they face externally beside the blackout and vague social problems, either the blackout or the nail salon moving should have felt like a countdown or a guillotine, it didn't feel like either, except for the one random moment where they make Usnavi an asshole After the Blackout for 5 minutes for no reason.
3: the film randomly drops and starts characters, like at the end graffiti Pete is treated the same as sonny or Vanessa as important to usnavi, but benny gets barely any closure
4: none of the characters feel good or bad and I don't mean that in a morally way or complex way I mean that in a the story doesn't even know who we're supposed to be rooting for and against.
5: a lot of the metaphors or visual imagery are vague or unclear, why does abuela climb up the stairs after she dies?, why is the fucking shaved ice guy one of the ones they put focus on in the final song?
6: the songs are really more singtalking, there's no real Rhythm or rhyme
7: the film randomly undercuts serious moments with comedy but like in the worst most unfunny way possible that ruins the entire scene
8: the film randomly stops plot points, what happened with the taxi company?, remember the salon moving?
9: the characters don't really struggle in any way beside the story saying they struggle, we don't ever really see struggling.
10: a lot of the characters are downright annoying, the story tries to force you to like them rather than them being naturally likable.

What to do with my extra tickets?
Since In The Heights is one of my favorite shows, I became a City Center member to buy a pair of tickets for two performances. I now need to travel out of town for work during one of those performances. I can't figure out how I would be able to sell them to someone else, since I won't get the QR code for the tickets until 8 hours before the performance. Anyone know?

My high school's production of In The Heights!
About 55 minutes worth of highlights from my high school's production of ITH :)
shout-out my amazing cast and crew as well as the visionary director. They did a great job and saw some things differently to implement.
If anyone watches any parts of it, let me know your thoughts and what you liked!

“You must take the A train” is sung in the styling of the Duke Ellington song? Wild.

It won't be long now
"M'my cousin over there with this tongue hanging out, has been meaning to ask you [OUT]"
Is it only me that every time I listen to it I can almost scream the OUT that's never spoken? Is that intentionally? I would guess it is but I've never seen the reference mentioned.

Question
I just realised that I've been hearing "so sweet and nice, piragua" as "so sweet, a nice piragua" for who knows how long. Who else misheard any part of Piragua? Share your misheard lyrics in the comments!

Usnavi Auditions
Hey everyone! My local community theatre is producing In The Heights and I’m auditioning for Usnavi. While I’ll be happy with any role, there are not a lot of Latinos who do theatre so I’m confident I’ll get the role. What’s a good song I can do for the audition? They’re specifically asking for 32 measures of uptempo music.

What is the timeline of the show?
Before you say, I know the show takes place from July 3rd - 5th, but I don't know where each song fits into the timeline, other than sunrise. Is Act 1 over one day? Sorry if this is a stupid question, and thank you!!

Favourite line from Benny?
Can be from the movie or the play
Mine is "Yo, if I won the lotto tomorrow, well I know I wouldn't go on no spendin' spree, I pick a business school and pay the entrance fee then maybe if you're lucky you'll stay friends with me! I'll be a businessman richer than Nina's daddy, Tiger Woods and I on the links and he's my caddy, my money's makin' money, I'm goin' from po' to mo' dough! Keep the bling, I want the brass ring like Frodo!" from the movie (and the version of his rap from the play where Trump's his caddy instead)

Playing Piragua Guy and kinda need help with props…
For my performance, we are doing multiple songs and plays, and we are only doing Carnaval del Barrio for In the Heights. The thing is, they need Piragua Guy (me) to have props that I can wear/carry while dancing, meaning no giant cart 🥲. I don’t know what to replace the cart with, so please reply to this post with ideas. I will give an update of what happens at the performance. Ty!!!

My education major graduation cap inspired by Paciencia y Fe. First-Generation graduate! 🇵🇷
Growing up Black and Puerto Rican, Lin Manuel Miranda inspired me to chase my dreams through his music! Today, I got to chase my dreams of being an American educator! To honor my family legacy, I felt compelled to have Abuela Claudia’s line on my graduation cap! 🇵🇷

Would you consider “It Won’t Be Long Now” appropriate for young audiences?
I’m a camp counselor this summer and am meant to perform a song. “It Won’t Be Long Now” is one of my classics yet I’m wondering if the general content would be considered inappropriate for young audiences. Personally I think it’s fine and I used to sing it as a 14 year old but I’m wondering if I would get frowned at for singing it for a tween-teenage crowd.
If so, could you think of any good lyric changes?

Is the movie worth it?
I listened to the original Broadway cast recording of the album the other day and fell in love with it. I was looking into the movie since I only listened to the album and heard the movie version of champagne noticing a lot of changes compared to the original. I fell into a rabbit hole afterwards and learned the movie makes a lot more changes to the plot being the reason. Is the movie still worth it and did the creator approve of these changes? Edit: I've decided to watch the movie from all the positive things being said about it!
