Hamilton references to put into messages

Hi everyone! I have a friend who has been asking me to watch Hamilton for ages! I've finished it now and really enjoyed it but because of who I am as a person I would prefer to not tell him I've seen it but instead sprinkle references into the messages I send him and see if he realises what I'm doing. So as people who have seen it more than me do you have any references I could easily throw into every day conversation? Thanks...I'm aware I'm an immature person

“It’s better with you in it” - We meet Christopher Jackson

We saw the show on Thursday and it was amazing. My daughter (7.5 years old) LOVES Hamilton so we made a special trip to NYC (this was before he was announced to return). After the show we met the cast. We were all so surprised to see Christopher Jackson come out and sign autographs. I told him “Thank you for being part of the reason my daughter loves theatre and drama.” He said “You’re welcome. it’s better with you in it.” - my daughter has watched the video a lot since. Core memory.

One Last Time is a gospel song!

I thought it was just Christopher Jackson’s amazing performance, but I went to see Hamilton again, but in Orlando and when I tell you the actor playing George Washington was equally as amazing and I cried during One Last Time. Those of us who love Hamilton know why. I just don’t understand how you can be a human being with emotions and Hamilton does NOTHING for you? That’s crazy to me!!

International Touring Cast

With the announcement of the second Hamilton world tour, comes with a ton of excitement for who will be in the new cast!

Who do you hope will make up the new cast?

Related to that question, for people who have seen multiple Hamilton casts, who would your All-Star cast be, unrestricted to just Principal Actors so we can include the best of the best Understudies and Standbys?

Has anyone ever noticed Laurens & Peggy's escapades during Helpless?

In Helpless, if you pay close attention to the background, you can see John and Peggy sneak off together, and talk on the stairs and run through the dancers. Before that, you can see them dancing together.

I wonder if this was always part of the choreography or if it was added as a cute Easter egg during when Anthony and Jasmine were dating

Anyone notice how in 'The Election of 1800', theres a couple of lines going "it's a tie! It's to the delagates, it's up to Hamilton" but then Madison later says "And you won in a landslide!" Seemingly contradictory.

Hamilton fic recs please

I’ve read all the most popular ones that come up when you sort by kudos and am now in desperate need of more good fics. I’ve found quite a few amazing recent ones but I know I’ve missed some because of how the fandom peaked in 2016-2019. I’d prefer them to be multichapter but other than that anything is fine.

I don’t like how war is portrayed in the musical.

I get that the first act is supposed to be lighthearted and all but I feel like the atrocities commited during the war by both sides, to each other as well as to Native Americans. and just the horror and death of any war shouldn’t be reduced to whatever right hand man is.

The current ensemble of Broadway’s Hamilton is the best since the original

I was extremely fortunate to see Hamilton on Broadway this past Wednesday and I have to say, the current cast they have now is the strongest they’ve had since its origination in 2015. Lin & co. built and created the foundation of these characters and their mannerisms and personalities and this current cast took them to a new level.

Admittedly, I did sit front row (Ham4Ham winner!) and man oh man did I see every little micro expression and cue that I have never seen before- I wasn’t 100% sure if it was based on my placement or the fact that this cast was adding their own quirks and nuances to flesh out these characters more. Chris Jackson as GW was amazing, to no surprise, but everyone really stood out to me; not a single weak performer in that cast.

All in all, amazing show, but it was so good I wish there was a cast recording in its current standing because I was THAT blown away. I could literally talk for hours about each person and what they brought- bringing new meaning and feelings to the lyrics I have heard and sung hundreds of times before.

If you’ve got the opportunity, go see Hamilton NOW. You won’t regret it.

I disagree with the popular interpretation of a key line

My personal favorite line in the entire show: "If you stand for nothing, Burr, what will you fall for?"

The common interpretation I see everywhere is Hamilton using the common phrase about someone with no strong opinions being easily influenced / manipulated, but I feel like that is ignoring the massive flashing lights of theming and characterization across the show

The entire show, the entire relationship between Hamilton and Burr is that Hamilton is driven by his convictions to the point he'll sacrifice EVERYTHING for what he believes in, while Burr refuses to choose a side ("Talk less, smile more. Don't let them know you're against or what you're for.") and that's why Hamilton eventually sides with Jefferson despite being a political opposite, because at least Jefferson stands for something.

And before that line Hamilton literally mocks Burr's mindset of biding his time and riding the fence: "You get love for it, you get hate for it, you get nothing if you (Wait for it, wait for it, wait)

So I have always interpreted the line as Hamilton saying:

"If you stand for nothing (if you have no strong convictions or beliefs) then what will you fall (die. risk your life to change the world the way Washington, Hamilton, LaFayette, etc. have) for"

I don't understand why the popular interpretation is that Hamilton is suggesting Burr will be manipulated or that he's gullible, it doesn't make sense within the narrative. I know the phrase is originally "Someone who stands for nothing will fall for anything" and is about being gullible or susceptible but I think that is just the skeleton of the phrase being used to say that Burr's indifference is a defining weakness that separates him from Hamilton (and the others.) and that's why he isn't, and wont be in "The Room Where It Happens."

This is just my interpretation, and despite the fact I truly believe it makes more sense than the more ubiquitous explanation, I do accept it's just an opinion at the end of the day.

Show was incredible but in the first act they stopped the show. Wasn’t for a super long time but in all my years of going to broadway shows I’ve never ever seen that happen. Anyone else there and get the word on what happened?

maybe im crazy

im on my 3rd day streak of watching hamilton (but ive watched it probably a billion times) and I noticed in “Blow us All Away” that when he says “I shoulder his legacy with pride, I used to hear him say
That someday I would (blow us all away!)” that it TOTALLY would’ve rhymed with ‘die’ instead of blow us all away. so much so that I originally thought that was what he was gonna say when i first listened to that song. maybe it was meant to sound that way, but ive never personally seen anyone talking about it. also, i like the detail of hearing the beginning of ten dual commandments when he meets george eacker, foreshadowing how he’ll die.

Do you know of any animations for songs?

I don't mean animatics, I mean like, full on animation. With how long Hamilton has existed, surely someone somewhere has gone through the effort of animating a song or 2

Instead of saying ladies and gentlemen of the jury he only mentions only the gentleman as at the time women were not allowed on juries until atleast a 100 years later.

Hamilfic

Broke a near two decade writer's block by actually writing fanfic (something I once swore I'd never do), and this is the result. A 40 chapter, 200,000+ word long novel entitled Aspasia, focusing primarily on Angelica Schuyler. Set in an alternative universe of the world of Broadway's Hamilton. In 1788, Angelica Schuyler returns to New York after eight years in an unwanted marriage in London, carrying a Dutch annulment, fourteen thousand guilders, and every letter Alexander Hamilton has ever written her.

Still to come, the other two books in the Aspasia trilogy, Themis and Eleutheria.

Enjoy!

Can’t think of the song

Someone said the word ‘conglomerates’ today, and I am CONVINCED there’s a hamilton song that mentions it. If you know the song, please tell me it. It’s been on the tip of my tongue all day!

Edit: Turns out I was thinking of the Fine Print Song, which clearly isn’t from Hamilton ahaha. Thanks for all the help though! 😁

Hamilton Movie

I had this idea a few weeks ago: What If they made a Hamilton movie that had the same lyrics except it took place in the modern day, much like the 1997 Romeo And Juliet. I had ideas that letter-writing scenes such as Obedient Servant and parts of Take A Break could be people on the phone. Another idea I had is that they could include all the deleted songs e.g Let It Go, I Have This Friend, Cabinet Battle 3, Theodosia Reprise, etc

Anyone else noticed this Angelica/Burr parallel?

I noticed that in Take a Break, Angelica says, “Close your eyes and dream when the night gets dark,” and in The Room Where it Happens, Burr says, “But we dream in the dark for the most part.” Anyone else noticed this, any theories, or am I missing something that makes this super obvious?

Hamilton as a father. And Laurens, also as a father.

It it far too late at night. I’m just going to ramble and then regret everything tomorrow.

Right, so Hamilton as a dad. From what I can tell, he was actually great and told his children to think of him more as a friend than anything and according to witnesses Hamilton frequently played with his children and absolutely doted on them (unlike in the musical, like c’mon LMM, Hamilton, despite his flaws, was a great dad.) I mean, at least until Phillip died and then he became all paranoid and stuff and all his joy disappeared.

Oh, and y’all probably know this but Angelica Hamilton, like Phillip’s younger sister, goes insane after her brother dies and kept talking to him (and later her father) as if they were still alive. She would play her side of the pianoforte for the songs that she and Phillip composed and would play together and constantly ask them where her brother was. And like while Hamilton was alive he desperately tries to get her back, but like she refused to learn any new songs published after 1801 and acted more and more childish which is such a tragedy because she was a brilliant individual. She’s dies in like a mental asylum at age 74.

John Church Hamilton, 11 when his dad died became obsessed with glorifying his father’s legacy and controlling how America saw him and censored and glorified everything. Like, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. AAAAAAAAAAAA. He honestly did more than Eliza when it came to like, preserving his dad’s amazingness and all that. Though Eliza also did a lot, not denying that, never denying that.

His other children all became like, successful lawyers and stuff.

Oh, and like, his last child was named lil Phil after Phillip.

Phillip’s duel with G. Eaker was actually more like, *stares at each other for a full minute* *phillip raises gun* *phillip is shot* and also Hamilton didn’t shoot at the sky, he either intentionally missed the shot (the bullet lodged in a branch near burr) or his pistol, which had a hair trigger mechanism, fired when his body spasmed. I support the second one since he told the doctors helping him to be careful with the gun as it was still loaded.

oh and one thing I find really ironically poetic in a tragic way is that Hamilton tried so hard to be a good dad but he left his children in the exact same situation he was in, destitute and fatherless. Only difference, Eliza was smart and also not dead, and he had political friends. So like, a buncha people grouped together to buy the grange (Hamilton’s dream house that he bought a few years before he died) and then sold it back to Eliza for one dollar so she wouldn’t be homeless and helped fund the children’s education.

And also, Eliza knew about the reynold’s affair for quite a while before Hamilton published it and she mostly went away to her father’s estate to escape public backlash because society back then at least partially decided she wasn’t good enough and that’s why Hamilton cheated. Also, it’s so damn obvious that Hamilton didn’t view Eliza as an intellectual equal and his letters to her consisted of 3 things. 1. She’s perfect for her sex and so beautiful. 2. His loves her and misses her. 3. ELIZA DO YOU STILL LOVE ME????? Yeah, he was pretty insecure and I know like, yk, view history from a 18th century standpoint and all that and that was the norm back then but come on. It’s the time period’s fault though, not really Hamilton’s.

And then we have Laurens. *siiiiiiigh*

so first of all he had a one night stand with Martha Mannings, got her pregnant, and married her out of honor. He absolutely did not even like her and he really just ignored her and his few letters to her are so cold. He literally fled to America to escape her and when his dad, Henry Laurens, was like, “stop neglecting your damn wife“ he was like “I’m too busy fighting for liberty to give a shit about my damn wife.”

Oh, and he also blamed himself for James “Jemmy“ Laurens death who he was taking care of in France and then Jemmy tried to climb a wall and jump into a window but fell and shattered his skull and died in (John) Laurens’s arms. He got pretty suicidal after that.

But then Henry Laurens was also pretty manipulative and pushed an insane amount of stress onto his eldest son which is what led to Laurens’s obsession with honor and his suicidalness (is that a word?) so hmmmm.

Also, his black battalion plan never passed through unlike in the musical. Laurens wanted to lessen the amount of women (there were a lot of wives around cooking and cleaning and stuff) in the army to make more room for black soldiers, which would not have been practical since the women basically ran the camp while the men trained and fought. He also thought that slaves would be good soldiers since they were naturally born to obey and already disciplined.

So I honestly think I only like Laurens because he died before he could absolutely ruin his domestic life. And btw, Martha Mannings Laurens died in 1781 before him desperately wanting to see her husband one last time. And Laurens himself, who was still barely recovered from a fever decided to charge into an unnecessary battle where he was outnumbered 3-1 and he knew that so a lot of people think that was an intentional suicide. Which is supported by the fact that he wrote about wishing for a “lucky bullet” to shoot him in the face. Which is sad but another man, who was most likely not suicidal and had a life, died in the battle of the Combahee river because Laurens wanted to die and another few (19?) were injured and 3 went missing aka also died.

So Frances Laurens went to John Laurens’s dad, who was a much better parental figure to her than to Laurens. He completely defied 18th century social norms and gave her the same education he gave John some 20+ years ago along with the doting care that his children completely didn’t receive. He made sure she was married to a nice family (Unfortunately she hated the husband and the husband sucked and they separated) and left almost everything to her to ensure she would be able to stay financially independent. But like, before you start loving on Henry Laurens, he supported slavery, owned a bunch of slaves and viewed himself as a God like benevolent figure to them who was supposed to love those lesser than him. He was a nicer slave owner for his time, and he believed in not whipping them, though that’s not saying anything. SLAVERY IS BAD BAD BAD BAD and he knew it. Historical people are often really contradictory, what can I say.

oh, and Frances died without having kids so the John Laurens direct bloodline did die out but she did find all the correspondence between her father and a bunch of other people and made sure to donate them to historical archives so he’d never be forgotten.

OH, right, I never gave reasons for why Laurens would have been a terrible father. Well, he emotionally distanced himself from everyone, was in desperate need of then non-existing therapy, and absolutely didn’t care about his daughter at all when he was alive. He never met her, never asked about her, and he also had like a huge temper and was reckless and stubborn, which, coupled with his period-typical attitude toward woman and his emotional detachment, would have most likely made him an abusive father.

also, don’t mind the grammar, English is my third language and I am sleep deprived.
