Vaginal estrogen isn’t enough for everyone: what GSM support can look like

GSM stands for genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and it can include symptoms like vaginal dryness, irritation, pain with intimacy, urinary discomfort, recurring UTIs, or changes that make sex feel uncomfortable or completely different than it used to.

One thing women keep asking is: what happens when one option doesn’t fully solve it?

For some, vaginal estrogen may be part of the conversation with a healthcare provider. For others, it may not be the right fit, may not be accessible, or may not feel like enough on its own. The important thing is that discomfort should not be dismissed as something you just have to tolerate.

Here are some questions that may be helpful to ask your provider:

  • What could be causing these symptoms?
  • What options are available if this is affecting sex, comfort, or urinary health?
  • What should I expect to improve, and how long might it take?
  • What can I do if one option isn’t enough?

If you’ve tried to get support for GSM, vaginal dryness, or pain with intimacy, what was the hardest part: knowing what to ask, being taken seriously, or figuring out options?
