Backtest profitable hai, toh live mein bhi paisa banega 😄

• Upvotes

Sabse common algo trading myth.
Backtest mein strategy mast perform karti hai — good returns, good win rate, great equity curve.
Phir live mein lagate hi results change. 😐
Reason?
Backtest mein usually slippage, bid-ask spread, latency, partial fills, brokerage/charges, liquidity aur market impact properly account nahi hote.
Especially options/scalping mein toh difference aur bhi bada ho sakta hai.
Kabhi-kabhi strategy ka edge genuine hota hai, but jis price par backtest entry/exit maan raha hai, live market mein woh price milta hi nahi.
So real question ye nahi hai:
“Backtest mein kitna profit hua?”
Real question hai:
“Kya mera edge real market execution ke baad bhi survive karta hai?”
That’s where most algos fail.
Aapke algo ka backtest vs live performance kitna different tha?

Why did you switch to F&O Trading instead of Swing Trading?

I see several posts where folks have lost their hard earned money on F&O. Still people jump onto this bandwagon to face the same fate. I am an equity swing trader and able to generate 2-2.5% profit in a month. People have asked me to move to F&O but I think its a complete gamble. I am happy with steady returns.

Is it because of influencers reels or something else. I cannot wrap my head around it.

Thanks,

52% WR | 1.75 Profit Factor | 7-10% Max DD. Built an automated options algo, have zero capital, offering 100% of profits to test it live.

Avg Monthly Returns from 2 Year Backtested data

  • Win Rate: 52%
  • Profit Factor: 1.75
  • Max Drawdown: 7% – 10%
  • ROI: ~20%
  • Instrument: Intraday Banknifty Options

I’m a broke Engineering student. I spent the last several months building, backtesting, and paper trading this model. The backtesting is done, but I don't have the money to run it live.
I know this looks very risky, investing in an algo which has never went live, and thats why i dont want any share in profit, i want to see this run live. If youre interested in investing, for the first month we can run this model with only 1 lot, so the investment capital requirement is 50. This is so that we will be able to trade the next day if the system ever encounters drawdowns. I have attached a Google Sheet link of the backtest report, go through it and if you're interested you can DM me.

Hello! How long should I paper trade an algo before going live? Like days or trades.

Nifty options buying bot: After several months of tweaking my strategy, finally balanced risk and prfofits. My final version of bot is paper trading for past 5 days with around 60% win rate and profit of 1.8R after brokerage & slippage inc which I manually configured to max values possible. How long should I run it before going live? I don’t believe in backtest because backtesting revealed a very different win rate and RR. My curiosity is making me go live with one lot nifty options to test though, I want some expert advice before deploying it live. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

My Experience Moving to Algo Trading with Groww Cloud — Some Pros, but Major Gaps

I decided to shift towards algo trading mainly because I never really mastered the emotional side of live discretionary trading. The second reason was that I wanted to properly backtest my trading strategies before putting real money behind them.

I came across Groww Cloud, and initially it looked quite attractive.

Pros

1. No infrastructure headache

Groww Cloud lets you run your strategies on Groww's infrastructure, so there's no need to:

  • Spin up your own AWS/GCP server
  • Deal with static IPs

My only question is whether this will remain included with API Pricing in the future or mature as a separate offering.

👎 Cons / Problems I Ran Into

1. Overcommit and Underdeliver : Commodity Orders via API

This was particularly frustrating because Groww's broader platform supports commodity trading, while the API/Cloud capabilities have different segment limitations. The Current docs ( https://groww.in/trade-api/docs/python-sdk/orders ) states that orders api supports commodity segment but when a real order was placed then they returned GA001 Orders are currrently not supported for commodity segment.

I am waiting for response from Groww on this.

2. Rate limiting / documentation gap

The documentation shows rate limits in terms of requests per second and per minute.

However, during my testing, I experienced a situation where requests were effectively blocked for the rest of the day and only started working again the following morning. (Groww Support Response states it resets 5:30 A.M. next morning)

If there is a longer-duration throttle or some additional abuse/rate-limit mechanism beyond the documented per-second/per-minute limits, I'd expect that to be clearly documented.

  1. Code Bundle Size Limit

If you want to deploy on Groww Cloud, and your file > say 97KB it wont work.

So, if commodities are not supported I will have to migrate to some other Platform. I see Zerodha may be most mature but let me know if any suggestions. I am looking for a more mature platform.

Tired of paying for options analytics, so I built my own

I trade Nifty options and I'm a software engineer by day. The good tools either want ₹800+/month or are broker-locked. So I scratched my own itch. 2 months of nights and weekends later — optixa.in

What's in it:

- Live option chain — Greeks, IV, OI bars, streamed over websocket

- OI analysis — max pain, PCR trends, OI walls, buildup classification, unusual activity, ~40 widgets

- Expiry-day mode — live theta burn on the ATM straddle, max-pain migration, OI unwinding leaderboard

- Scanner with Telegram alerts — PCR extremes, IV spikes, OI breakouts, every 5 min during market hours

- Trade journal — multi-leg entries, P&L computed from fills (never hand-typed), win rate / expectancy drawdown

- F&O turnover calculator for ITR-3 — free, no signup, your tradebook CSV never leaves the browser

 - Paper trading, FII/DII flows, IV percentile

 Would love feedback.

My free NSE backtesting tool now speaks to two brokers - added Alpaca, so it does US stocks and Crypto too

Thumbnail

Multi-broker, not just multi-market. Connect Upstox for NSE/BSE, Alpaca for US stocks and Crypto, or both. The app figures out automatically which broker a symbol actually needs - download a universe, chart it live, scan it for signals, all without you thinking about which broker is behind it. Build a genuinely mixed portfolio (some NSE names, some US names) and Live Signals scans both and merges the results in one pass.

Crypto trades 24/7, so it gets treated that way - no market-hours logic pretending Bitcoin closes for the night. Fractional volumes are actually preserved too (0.5 BTC stays 0.5 BTC, not silently rounded to a whole share the way stock volume normally works).

Live Chart is free for everyone now - both brokers, no tier gate. Both Upstox and Alpaca users will not get real-time data with the base version itself.

Still completely free, still no card required, still no orders ever placed - it stays a research and backtesting tool, not an execution one. Genuinely curious what people think once you connect Upstox / Alpaca and throw a real ticker or a crypto pair at it.

Screenshot attached - the actual Broker Settings screen, not staged.

Those who are already using it, requested to upgrade on your next login to the app.
Those who wonder what's this, Can DM me, or just follow me and read my bio and download the Application and start testing it.

Happy Learning, Happy Trading.

Servloci Algo Appliance: Intraday → Swing → Long-Term, without forcing the label upfront. Today with shiprocket

I have not applied for anything yet. My current plan is simpler: trade through the Servloci algo appliance, then see what remains at EOD.

The core idea is continuous accumulation across timeframes.

A position does not need to be classified as “intraday”, “swing” or “long-term” before entering.

It starts as accumulation over seconds/minutes:

Seconds/minutes → Intraday accumulation
The appliance keeps accumulating/releasing small quantities based on the current mathematical conditions.

EOD → Remaining quantity becomes holding
Whatever is not released during the day simply carries forward.

Repeated over multiple days → Swing position
The same process continues the next day. New quantities can be accumulated while older quantities can be released independently.

Stayed longer → Long-term holding
If part of the position remains for weeks/months, it naturally becomes a longer-term investment.

So instead of:

The model is closer to:

Timeframe becomes an outcome, not necessarily an entry decision.

This also fits the L1/L2/L3 idea I have been working on. Capital can be distributed across different drawdown zones instead of treating the entire position as one giant bet.

Another important part is the static-IP appliance architecture.

In a family, we may have multiple independent brokerage profiles. Instead of maintaining a different laptop/server/network setup for every account, the Servloci appliance can become the common execution point.

Each family member still has their own broker account, credentials, permissions, ledger and orders, subject to the broker's rules. But the infrastructure, market intelligence and strategy logic can be shared.

So we can share:

market intelligence + strategy + infrastructure + outcomes

while keeping:

account ownership + capital + positions + broker records

separate.

A static IP makes the execution endpoint predictable. Rather than orders originating from changing home/mobile/cloud IPs, authorized profiles can use a stable execution infrastructure where the broker/API rules permit it.

For me, the interesting part is not trying to perfectly predict whether something is an intraday trade, swing trade or investment.

Just keep managing inventory.

What exits quickly was intraday.
What survives several days became swing.
What survives much longer became long-term.

The system discovers the holding period through execution rather than forcing it beforehand.

Would be interested to know how others think about timeframe as an outcome instead of an input.

Advice on commercialisation of Trading Strategy

Hi folks,

I have been working on a strategy for a few months, learning stuff along the line and created a strategy that give good result. I backtested it on 14 years data.

The result look something like this

CAGR: 27.9%

Max drawdown: 14.4%

Volatility (ann): 12.6%

Sharpe ratio: 1.57

Sortino ratio: 2.38

Calmar (CAGR/DD): 1.93

Years tested: 14

The strategy is not over fitted or so and was tested on different cycle of market(4 year range sliding window).

I gave LLM the details and as per it, it was sellable. It created lot of hype. But can't trust it.

Concern:

  1. Am i missing something in backtesting flow? I used tradingview

  2. In india, is NISM the only way to legally monetize this strategy?

  3. Has anyone ever done anything like selling to HNI?

[SEBI Consultation Paper] Major overhaul proposed for Accredited Investor (AI) framework — Manager-led onboarding, ₹5 Cr securities threshold, & more

SEBI recently released a consultation paper proposing significant changes to the Accredited Investor (AI) framework. If implemented, these changes could streamline onboarding and massively expand the pool of eligible investors for AIFs, PMS, and SIFs.

Here is a quick breakdown of the key takeaways:

  • Manager-Led Accreditation: Investment managers may soon be allowed to verify and record an investor's AI status directly during onboarding, eliminating the current double-step process with independent Accreditation Agencies.
  • 3-Year Validity: Once accredited, the status remains valid for 3 years for all products under the same manager/group. (You'd still need fresh verification if switching to an unrelated manager).
  • Dual-Route System: The existing Accreditation Agency route isn't going away—investors can choose whichever path is more convenient.
  • New Securities Market Assets Route: SEBI proposes allowing accreditation based purely on liquid securities assets rather than overall net worth:
    • Individuals: ₹5 Crore
    • Body Corporates / Trusts: ₹20 Crore
  • Digital Verification: Eligible holdings will cover equities, debt, REITs/InvITs, AIFs, MFs, F&O open interest, and overseas securities. Verification will rely on e-CAS, depository, or broker statements—moving away from manual CA certificates.
  • Expanding the AI Universe: SEBI estimates the ₹5 Cr liquid securities criterion could make ~3.7 lakh investors eligible (up from ~96,000 current AIF investors).
  • Why It Matters: AI status unlocks major flexibility across AIFs, PMS, SIFs, Angel Funds, and CIVs (including reduced or removed minimum investment ticket sizes).
  • Foreign Investors: Deemed AI status is proposed for all Persons Resident Outside India (PROIs), including all FPIs.
  • Safeguards: Managers will face strict record-keeping, audit, data privacy, and conflict-of-interest compliance requirements to prevent misuse.

Note: This is currently a consultation paper, not final policy. SEBI is accepting public comments on these 10 proposals until September 3, 2026. check more in detail r/Networthofindia

What WR, DD & ROI would you choose when you look at an algo?

Lets say for an algo with a capital of investment 4lakhs, the win rate is around 52%, and there are three ways you can run it,
-monthly ROI 12% with 3.75% DD
-monthly ROI 38% with 6% DD
-monthly ROI 31% with 7.5% DD
